Glam spring styles in plus sizes: Jason Wu’s new Eloquii line is here
Tumblr media

Jason Wu and Eloquii just dropped the most covet-worthy, spring plus-size collection of the season.
The collection is Wu’s second for Eloquii, which builds upon the strengths of his last. It’s centered on form-fitting clothing that hugs your curves and is ultra flattering and undeniably fashionable. After all, Wu is one of the most revered American designers in the field. He’s dressed everyone from Meghan Markle to Michelle Obama and Priyanka Chopra.
No matter who Wu is dressing, one element remains clear — his designs are effortlessly beautiful and feminine. For this spring collection, the effort Wu puts into his designs remains the same. “I designed this collection no differently than [how] I design my other collections…it’s the same design philosophy. I want to provide the same kind of elevation and glamour and beauty,” Wu shares with Yahoo Lifestyle. “It sounds really simple, but there isn’t really that much out there in the market.”
For Wu, designing fashion-forward clothing that is beautiful and elevated — no matter what size a woman is — is an “obvious choice.”

It’s refreshing that the entire Jason Wu x Eloquii line retails for under $200 and caters exclusively to plus-size women — a market that has long been ignored. A typical Jason Wu dress can retail for $1,000 or more. Here, you can snag a gorgeous floral maxi dress for only $150 and in sizes 14 to 28. However, just because the price point is more accessible doesn’t mean quality is being sacrificed.
“We wanted to make sure it looked as good and elevated as anything else I do,” Wu tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “We don’t take shortcuts and want to make sure that everything you get here is, ‘I can’t believe I’m getting it for this price.'”
Looking through the collection, you’ll find wardrobe pieces you can wear to work, on dates and special occasions like weddings. A few of our personal favorites include a sleek and refined trench dress and a stunning floral sheath dress that is perfect for wedding season, as well as chic blouses, suits and skirts that perfectly epitomize what fashionable spring dressing is all about.
Wu is one of a handful of designers pushing size-inclusivity in America, while designers in Europe have been slow to adapt. When asked why that is, Wu responded: “I suppose in America we’re much less tied down by tradition,” he explains. “And I feel like right now there’s a real moment in America, not just about plus, but about really representing people of all shapes, size, color, gender. And I think in that sense, just given how crazy the world is right now, I think there’s a real concerted effort that people want to be authentic and represented.”
The Jason Wu x Eloquii collection caters to plus-size women everywhere, offering stylish wardrobe pieces that are not only perfect for spring, but can also be worn for years to come. Shop our favorite picks below and afterwards, head to eloquii.com for the full assortment.
The editors at Yahoo Lifestyle are committed to finding you the best products at the best prices. At times, we may receive a share from purchases made via links on this page.

A history of tennis fashion and skirts: Why are they still such a must?
Tumblr media

On the first night of the U.S. Open, Serena Williams took the high road and responded to her catsuit ban by wearing a fabulous black tutu.
The French Tennis Federation president, Bernard Giudicelli, recently said Williams’s Wakanda-inspired catsuit (her words) “will no longer be accepted,” during an interview with Tennis magazine. “One must respect the game and the place.”
Discussion soon erupted on what type of tennis attire is considered appropriate or not. Tennis legend Billie Jean King chimed in on the conversation, slamming French Open officials for the ban. “The policing of women’s bodies must end,” she wrote in a Twitter post. “The ‘respect’ that’s needed is for the exceptional talent ⁦@serenawilliams⁩ brings to the game. Criticizing what she wears to work is where the true disrespect lies.”
Williams didn’t let the controversy deter her from winning her first U.S. Open match against Magda Linette on Monday. For the occasion, she paired her black tutu with an edgy leather moto jacket, asymmetrical leotard, and white sneakers. The look is part of the new “Queen” collection inspired by the tennis star and made in a collaboration between Virgil Abloh, the acclaimed Off-White designer, and Nike.
With this look, the 23-time Grand Slam winner continues her stride as a statement-making fashion star on the tennis court, and, as history shows — she’s not alone. Anne White was the first player to wear a catsuit on the court, which caused quite a stir at Wimbledon in 1985. Unconventional tennis fashions have been worn by male players too. A notable example is Andre Agassi, who wore denim shorts to the U.S. Open in 1988. Serena Williams longtime rival, Maria Sharapova, explored creative fashion as well, wearing a tuxedo-style blouse at Wimbledon in 2008.
Despite these fashion-making moments, the iconic tennis skirt continues to be the key sartorial piece in the game. Above, a look at how tennis fashion has changed over the years and why the skirt endures.

During the 1900s, long-sleeved blouses and long maxi skirts were the style of choice for tennis players. “Tennis started out in the Victorian era in England as a lawn sport for the aristocracy,” said Ben Rothenberg, author of The Stylish Life: Tennis, on CNN.
Modest tennis fashion dominated the era, as seen below on a tennis player who wears a pussy-bow blouse with ballooned sleeves, long white skirt, and white sneakers, all covering up nearly every inch of skin.
Tumblr media

The 1920s saw a loosening of dress codes with the introduction of sleeveless blouses and higher hemlines. Pleats also became a popular stylistic choice.
Here, Olympic and Wimbledon champion Suzanne Lenglen wears a knee-length pleated skirt. She accessorizes the look with a soft head wrap.

In the 1930s, skirts and hemlines continued to hit the knee, but pantyhose was no longer required in the dress code. Women began to wear polo shorts or another alternative: drop waist dresses or those cinched at the waist.

By the 1940s, women embraced shorts for greater mobility on the court, but they still kept them classy (of course). Here, American tennis player Pauline Betz wears a short-sleeve blouse tucked into her high-waisted, soft pleated shorts and a belt to tie it all together.

In the 1950s, when Marilyn Monroe’s famous windy skirt photograph became an iconic moment in film history, tennis players like Lea Percioli bent the rules of traditional tennis fashion.
Her style on the court was often featured in the press, where Percioli embraced short skirts and dresses, even if that meant showing more than she planned on.

By the 1960s, mod fashion was front and center. Women took a more playful approach, embracing sleeveless tops and shirts with stripes, gingham, and other graphic prints like those seen here on  Virginia Wade and Lorna Greveille-Collins of England and Marlys Burel of France.

The 1970s was all about psychedelia. Colorful prints and patterns dominated the fashion scene, and this influenced tennis fashions, too, as exhibited here in a look worn by Martina Navratilova.

The 1980s witnessed a controversial look by American player Anne White, who wore a white spandex catsuit by designer Ted Tinling during her first match at Wimbledon. Little did she know that Serena Williams would sport a similar catsuit at the French Open more than 30 years later.

The 1990s were all about bright colors, loud prints, and plenty of scrunchies on the tennis court. German champ Steffi Graf wears a colorful floral skirt with a matching polo shirt and white scrunchie in her hair at the French Open in 1995.

By the 2000s, brands like Adidas and Nike were emblazoned on tennis outfits of the top athletes. Here, Russian player Anna Kournikova wears head-to-toe Adidas.

In 2008, tennis champions Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova pushed the envelope of traditional tennis attire at Wimbledon, a bastion of traditionalism. Williams opted for a white trench coat, while Sharapova wore a tuxedo-style pleated blouse tucked into white shorts — and both looks were designed by Nike.
Unfortunately, Sharapova wasn’t able to wear her new look for too long, as she was eliminated in the second round. Her winning opponent, Alla Kudryavtseva, had this to say of Sharapova’s look, “I was pleased to beat her: I didn’t like her outfit.”

In 2010, tennis fashion took a more scandalous approach when Venus Williams wore a lingerie-like, sheer black-lace dress with red piping, designed by Williams for her fashion label, EleVen.

In 2011, Venus Williams continued her fashion stride, sporting atypical tennis attire.
At the Australian Open, Williams sported a yellow woven, cut-out tank with a splash of color.

In 2015, Maria Sharapova traded in her 2008 tuxedo shirt for a classic stripe shirt over what would become known as the “Nike Maria Paris dress,” an adjoining white racerback tank top connected to a pleated navy mini.

In 2016, Serena Williams sported a classic all-white look in deference to Wimbledon’s all-white policy.

In 2017, 24-year-old Sloane Stephens won the U.S. Open women’s singles competition wearing a sherbet-orange tank dress and matching visor and shoes by Under Armour.

In 2018, Serena Williams debuts her Wakanda-inspired black catsuit at the French Open, which was designed to help prevent blood clots, a health issue she has been prone to.
The catsuit came under scrutiny by French Tennis Federation president Bernard Giudicelli, who recently said the style would “no longer be accepted.”

In the wake of this controversy, Williams debuted a brand-new look for the U.S. Open on August 27: a black tutu skirt, made by Off-White and Nike.

Curvy shoppers grill retail execs: 'Plus-size' applies to body shapes other than 'hourglass'
Tumblr media
Nicolette Mason, Malissa Akay, Nadia Boujarwah, Lynne J. Coleman, Griselangel Paula, and Sara Westbrook at theCURVYcon on Sept. 8, 2018, in New York City.
Plus-size shoppers want clothing that fits their diverse figures, athletic wear that actually performs, and better styles for men.
Those were just a few of the issues that came up at theCURVYcon on Sept. 8 when five of the biggest retailers in the plus-size fashion industry joined together for a lively discussion on the state of plus-size retail, current style solutions for their customers, and challenges that lay ahead. Representatives from Lane Bryant, J.C. Penney, Rebdolls, Old Navy, and Dia&Co were all present for the panel, moderated by plus-size model and designer Nicolette Mason.
yahoo
There’s a common misconception that the term plus-size applies to only one group of people; however, it’s quite the opposite.
“For a lot of companies looking at our community from the outside, it feels often like plus is kind of envisioned as this one monolithic group of women and everything within plus is the same,” said Nadia Boujarwah, CEO and co-founder of Dia&Co. “And the truth is, there are a hundred million women in this community, and so you should expect every possible uniqueness to be true within the community that we serve.”
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
The “Dear Retailer” panelists discuss issues for plus-size retailers and consumers. (Photo: Getty Images)
This misconception is echoed by the consumer standpoint as well. During the question-and-answer period, one audience member voiced her exasperation with this issue. “As a plus-size customer, I find it incredibly frustrating that clothes are designed for hourglass figures most of the time — hugging, hugging, hugging,” she said. “I couldn’t wear jeans in high school because I didn’t find a pair that could fit me. … I’m wondering if there’s anything being done regarding … doing something for apple shapes, or different shapes in particular, not just the mostly represented hourglass figure?”
To address this, Lane Bryant’s senior vice president and general merchandising manager, Malissa Akay, said, “We do a ton of work with real customers. We have hundreds of thousands of women in our database [who] engage with us weekly and monthly on different fits.” In one example that Akay cited, the popular Allie pant was actually crowdsourced. The pants feature special fit technology, and the line includes four stretch levels as well as a no-gap waistband.
Tumblr media

The audience asked questions about plus-size men too. According to Sara Westbrook, head of plus merchandising at Old Navy, men “face the same challenges as plus-size women.” She noted that plus-size males may feel a sense of disenfranchisement that’s similar to the way many females feel. “That’s a really important part of our men’s business at Old Navy,” Westbrook says, “and we have a really broad size range as well as lengths, so he can definitely find himself within our collection.”
yahoo
When it comes to activewear, there are misconceptions about what plus-size women actually need or want from it, the panelists said. “We don’t have to be a ‘before’ photo,” said Nicolette Mason. “We don’t have to be active just because we’re trying to lose weight. We can love our bodies exactly as we are and still want to participate in fitness and activities.” On this topic, an audience member asked the panelists, “What are your feelings on activewear in the plus-size community, because it’s something I think everyone’s attempted and everyone really wants, but … we still want plus-size to function at the right support that we need.”
Dia&Co’s CEO and co-founder, Nadia Boujarwah, addressed the question, saying: “I think there’s a big misconception that the plus-size woman is looking for athleisure and not performance wear, and that’s just not true.” In fact, Dia&Co launched activewear for the first time earlier this year, and it’s now the largest retailer in the world to sell plus-size activewear.
Tennis champion and designer Venus Williams, who spoke at theCURVYcon on Friday night, recently revealed that she’s expanding her activewear line, EleVen, into plus sizes (exclusively with Dia&Co) to cater to curvy women who care about both fit and performance.
The panelists embarked on a wide range of discussions on issues ranging from diversity to representation, both internally and externally. Interestingly, Mason brought up a valid point that the blame shouldn’t rest solely on the brands. “As much criticism as brands get for not casting diversely, there are so few [modeling] agencies that are actually representing women above a size 14,” she said.
It’s refreshing to know that representation is being taken seriously from these brands from an internal standpoint, including people who are behind design decisions and creation. At Lane Bryant, 95 percent of its workforce are women. At Dia&Co, more than half of its staff are women of color. At J.C. Penney, “It’s just a part of our culture,” said Lynne J. Coleman, senior divisional brand management director. “It’s just the backbone of collaborative innovation, getting different opinions from all different types of people.”
Yes, there are still challenges for plus-size retailers, but there are many strides to applaud as well. Events like theCURVYcon that bring together a diverse group of women — including models, celebrities, influencers, and retailers — continue to push the envelope on plus-size fashion.

Snoop Dogg feels like a 'superhero' in Levi's: Hailey Bieber, EmRata and more party at Levi's Coachella bash
Tumblr media

Levi’s threw an epic pool party bash in the desert during Coachella, drawing celebrities like Snoop Dogg, Hailey Bieber, Emily Ratajkowski, Joan Smalls and more.
Want daily pop culture news delivered to your inbox? Sign up here for Yahoo’s newsletter.
Yahoo Lifestyle caught up with Snoop Dogg, who performed a DJ set at the party, to recall the very first time he slipped on a pair of Levi’s jeans. “My first pair of Levi’s was in the ‘70s. Early ‘70s. Probably 1977 to 1978,” the rapper told Yahoo Lifestyle. “I got some hand-me-downs from one of my cousins. I ironed them all night and made sure they were creased up so when I put them on they had a different style.”
Tumblr media

His favorite pair of jeans? None other than Levi’s classic 501s. “501s! I mean you know that’s Snoop Dogg, that’s my style. You just throw these mother f***ers on and they just feel automatically ... like a superhero. It’s like my cape. You know what I’m saying? Superman has a cape with an S on his chest. Snoop Dogg has 501s on his legs at all times.”
Tumblr media

Hailey Bieber shares Snoop’s fondness for 501s, telling Yahoo Lifestyle, “I stole my first pair of Levi’ 501s from my dad,” referencing actor Stephen Baldwin.
“I think the 501 is ageless and timeless,” she added. “I imagine that my style might change slightly over the years but my jeans will stay the same.”
Bieber is the new face of Levi’s 501 campaign and showed her support at the brand’s Coachella party by wearing a full Canadian tuxedo look by Levi’s, accessorizing with gold bling and a dazzling “Bieber” necklace around her neck.
Tumblr media

Joan Smalls also reminisced about her first pair of Levi’s, a “high-waisted” number. “It was the classic jean,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle. “It was actual real denim. You know, it didn’t have the stretch or anything.”
Tumblr media
Emily Ratajkowski at Levi's in the Desert 2019 Coachella party in Indian Wells, Calif. (Photo: Levi's) (Photo: Levi's)
Emily Ratajkowski shared, “My earliest memory was my dad wearing Levi’s and how inspired I was by him.” Nowadays, the model said, “I love the high-waisted jeans, all different types, older vintage versions.” For Ratajkowski, Levi’s “has that rock n roll feel. I think of Bruce Springsteen and these music icons who have all worn Levi’s. They have a vintage look which I love.” The best part? They get better with age.
Jaden Smith, Wiz Khalifa, Candice Huffine and more partied in the desert as Snoop Dogg DJed.
In between tunes, Snoop Dogg told Yahoo Lifestyle how Levi’s ability to surpass generations and age groups over the years has made him a longtime supporter.
“Levi’s is original and unique,” he said. “It feels good. It fits good. It’s been the same. It’s something that you’re accustomed to. It’s the quality. There’s concern. There’s care.
“Not only do they make good clothes, but they do great things in the community and they give back,” he added. “That’s one thing that I can say why I stand by Levi’s. They also put their money where their mouth is as far as giving back to communities, to the people that actually buy their clothes. So that’s a beautiful thing.”

“I LOVE these pants! Not only do they feel like you're wearing pajamas, but they are so flattering!” wrote one 5-star reviewer. “They hug your curves in all the right places, and fit loose where you want them too! I'm 5'5 with an athletic build, so finding pants that look good without making my legs look like tree trunks, but these make my shape look feminine and they are very forgiving on your waist! They are great for just about any occasion, I will be ordering another pair for sure! They wash very well, and don’t wrinkle easily!”

“I have been eying the tie-waisted business pant trend the past year or so, and decided it was finally time to hop on the train when I landed myself a new job,” shared one happy customer. “I wish I hadn't waited so long! I bought these in khaki and maroon, and I love them. The material is stretchy and oh-so-comfy, the fit is perfect (flattering for my curves but not too tight as to draw attention), the pockets are so handy, and I love how many colors I had to choose from. Every time I wear them I just ring in compliments, it's fantastic. Perfect for any networking occasion, fancy-but-not-too-fancy meeting, or just a cute and classy night out on the town. I might purchase in even more colors.”

“I purchased the long sleeve pants due to the versatility,” wrote one satisfied shopper. “These could both be dressed up to the office, or casual with flats on the weekend. Let me say this. MOST COMFORTABLE PANTS EVER. They are a bit of a stretch material so lots of room to work with. They are true to size. I am 145lbs and 5 3' and purchased a size small. I have gotten so many compliments from people on my pants. I now have both the black and khaki. I plan on purchasing a couple more. Great quality and a staple for any closet.”

Meghan Markle wore a stunning white trench dress for royal baby Archie’s debut: Shop the look
Tumblr media

For the official introduction of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s royal baby, Meghan wore a classic sleeveless trench dress by Grace Wales Bonner. The white dress is tailored and features two pockets, double breasted buttons and cinched at the waist with a belt. Meghan styled the dress with her favorite Manolo Blahnik BB heels and a $750 turquoise necklace by Jennifer Meyer (but Nordstrom has a similar 18-karat gold plated version for $70 if you’re looking to buy).

Over the years, the duchess has sported trench dresses on numerous occasions, making it a natural choice for Meghan to wear on this important day. During Meghan’s first official royal engagement with Prince William and Kate Middleton, she wore a navy silk Jason Wu trench dress.

During the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s royal tour to New Zealand, Meghan sported a similar white tuxedo dress by Maggie Marilyn. Other notable trench dress moments include her striped Altuzarra dress at the the Commonwealth Youth Forum and then there was her pretty pastel pink Nonie dress at the Nelson Mandela Centenary Exhibition.

However, the Grace Wales Bonner dress might be her most meaningful, specifically that it is white. In one interpretation, psychologist Carole Kanchier wrote for the HuffPost explaining that, “white symbolizes purity, cleanliness, safety, completion, strength and neutrality.” Adding, someone might wear white “to feel peaceful, convey a well-balanced, optimistic personality.” In other ways, one could interpret white as a reference to Meghan’s feminist beliefs, which allude to Suffragette white.
In any case, it’s clear that both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were beaming with pride in sharing their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
If you love Meghan’s trench dress look, you can shop 10 versions below. It’s a modern take on a classic outerwear staple, but elegantly refined for a multitude of spring/summer occasions—work, dinners, dates, picnics, barbecues, you name it. You can swiftly elevate your dress with a pair of heels like Meghan’s or keep things low key and casual with summer slides. The options are truly endless; get your own today for as low as $35.

Summer's next 'it' bag is here, and it's under $100
Tumblr media
Fivestory Wicker Bubble Bag (Photo: Fivestory New York)
Every year, there’s a new “it” bag that is everywhere. This summer (we’re calling it now), it’s going to be the Fivestory New York Wicker Bubble Bag.
This bubble-shaped wonder of a bag features a round silhouette, wicker production and fabric lining. It surprisingly fits a lot, too. The bag expands when you undo the leather snap button so you can easily pack your wallet, phone, sunglasses, planner and even a small book inside the seemingly small space.
The wicker bag trend has captivated the fashion world ever since Jane Birkin sported her little basket bag everywhere she went throughout the ’60s and ’70s. More recently, wicker basket bags have trickled back onto the high-fashion catwalk, earning cameos at Chanel and Miu Miu.
Tumblr media

However, it’s hard to justify spending hundreds of dollars, let alone thousands of dollars on a wicker bag. This is why the Fivestory New York Wicker Bubble Bag ($78) lies in the perfect sweet spot. It’s on trend and affordable — at under $100. Available in three shades, green, white and red, there’s a color to suit your taste and style.
As the temperature heats up, consider this adorable bag to be your summertime sidekick. You can easily dress it up with your warm-weather wardrobe essentials like a floral maxi dress, midi skirt and breezy blouse, or blue jeans and T-shirt. No matter what you wear, you’ll look superstylish toting this bag around. To sweeten the appeal, the bag is picture-perfect for wedding season too. Whether you’re rocking a dramatic gown, off-the-shoulder dress or boatneck frock — just throw your wallet, keys and phone into the bag and wait for the compliments to flood in.

Gabrielle Union on her new fashion collection: 'I wanted to create a line that my own family could wear'
Tumblr media

Gabrielle Union is championing fashionable women everywhere in her new inclusive pre-fall collection and #AllTogetherNow ad campaign for New York & Company.
Her latest collaboration with the brand marks the one-year anniversary of the Gabrielle Union Collection, which seeks to empower women through Union’s line of statement sweaters, off-the-shoulder dresses, plaid jumpsuits, wide-leg trousers, and suiting.
Union has been a proponent of inclusivity since her line’s inception, and the big reason why comes down to her family. “When I was approached about doing a line with New York & Company, my biggest thing was I wanted to create a line that my own family could wear,” she tells Yahoo Lifestyle. Union says she recognizes that the world isn’t made up of “prepubescent models”; instead, people are “all shapes and sizes.” With that, Union has also learned throughout the design and manufacturing process how much materials cost to create specific designs that accommodate a wider market, but accessibility was important to her, even if that meant “tweaking to make sure that [the clothes] stayed affordable.”
Tumblr media

Inclusivity in the fashion industry is still a work in progress. Many European brands, in particular, are trailing behind New York designers. “It’s astounding that some people seem to think that exclusion creates … more demand,” she said. Although Union recognizes that inclusivity is a large issue affecting many industries, not just fashion, she doesn’t know why. “I think it’s an interesting business choice. I think it’s an interesting human choice, and by interesting — I mean terrible,” she said. For her collection, it was a no-brainer to create clothing for every woman.
The inspiration for the new Gabrielle Union Collection stems from her own personal style, her moods, and her travels with her husband, Dwyane Wade, which are famously tagged on Instagram as #wadeworldtour. “All of these #wadeworldtours have sort of influenced each collection in their own sort of way, whether it’s someone I saw on the streets of Shenzhen or, you know, a really fly woman in the south of France.” Union admits that even her husband’s style has influenced items for the collection. For example, Wade’s “denim kimono” will be iterated on in an upcoming collection. Still, the line has plenty of denim-inspired looks for fans to choose from — from chambray jumpsuits and blazers to wide-leg trousers and rompers.
One particular cropped sweater is Union’s favorite from the line. The back of the sweater reads “Rule the World” when you spread your arms out, which was part of the design intent. The sweater was “inspired by no sense of limits. The more free you are, the more open you are, the more inclined you are to sort of spread your wings,” Union says. “I just love that sweatshirt. It encourages women to feel empowered, dream big, and push their limits.”
This sense of female empowerment is also instilled in the ad campaign, for which Union enlisted a mix of her friends, colleagues, and, more largely, her “family.” Ajiona Alexus, Essence Uhura Atkins (who officiated Union and Wade’s wedding), and Valarie Pettiford star alongside Union in the campaign. “You know there’s the family that you’re born into and then the family that you create,” Union says in describing the women.
The new Gabrielle Union Collection is available in sizes XXS-XXL, or 00-20, and retails for $34.95-$129.95. Below are a few of our favorites; these and more are available on New York & Company.

From Bambi to Dumbo: Disney’s most beloved characters take a dark turn at Coach NYFW show
Tumblr media

A few of Disney‘s most-beloved characters have taken a dark, grungy turn in Coach’s Spring 2019 show during New York Fashion Week on Tuesday afternoon.
As the upper echelon of the fashion industry filtered into a large tented venue at Pier 94 along the Hudson river, guests were greeted with an enormous T-rex sculpture made of old metal scraps (a windmill, doors, and discarded metal bars). Rusty swings dangled from the sculpture. The set production resembled an abandoned, makeshift playground.
Selena Gomez sat front row wearing a metallic-gold, Western-inspired fringe dress layered with a black floral sheer blouse. She sat next to artist and photographer, Petra Collins, plus-size model Paloma Elesser, and stylist Kate Young. Whoopi Goldberg and Vogue editor Anna Wintour sat just a few seats away.

The show opened with heavy metal rock music blaring in the background as models stomped through the sandy set. Kaia Gerber strutted past Gomez wearing a baby-blue, oversized intarsia sweater with an image of Disney’s Captain Hook, except here he is reimagined as a crocodile. (He’s still got his pirate hat and hook, of course.) Gerber wore the sweater over a ruffle skirt and had on suede fringe moccasin boots.

Similarly, other Disney characters like Bambi and the Aristocats were printed on hoodies, and Dumbo showed up embroidered on both men’s and women’s knits. They were styled with fashionable items like black sunglasses, jacquard skirts, leather trousers, and fringe sneakers.
Overall, the collection possessed a ’90s grunge feel seen in its plethora of maxi prairie dresses, leather jackets, and oversized hoodies. They were intermixed with a Western flair, too, as seen in the frequent use of fringe and patchwork.

This special collaboration marks the fourth one between Coach and Disney. The brand used 1960s illustrations of Disney characters by Bonnie Cashin for its designs. During the show, the label also debuted their brand-new “barrel bag,” which has a cylindrical shape, similar to a duffle bag, except miniature sized. The playful bags still possess Coach’s aesthetic, but are reimagined with classic Disney characters on the hangtags and on the bags themselves.

Fortunately, if you’re looking to snag one of these Disney-inspired bags featuring Bambi, Dumbo, and the Dalmatians, they’re available now online at coach.com for $450.

Fashion designer casts all Asian models for historic NYFW runway show
yahoo
In a historic moment at New York Fashion Week, Claudia Li featured an all Asian model cast in showing her Spring 2019 collection. It was a monumental step forward in fashion’s diversity movement.
As an Asian designer, Li felt it was the right time. “People are starting to realize that there is diversity within the Asian group … not just a single … perspective [or] kind of beauty,” Li told Yahoo Lifestyle. Li grew up in New Zealand, where, she says, she was “surrounded by the mountains, fields of flowers, and low-lying clouds.” But she was a minority, and she didn’t reflect the Asian stereotype.
Tumblr media

“I had maybe three Asian girls in my high school, and so people always thought, you’re good at math, you’re good at science, you’re smart, you don’t go out at night,” Li says. “Well, guess what, I drove without a license. … I played field hockey. … I sang in a metal band.” At one point, Li said, she ran away with a “cute surfer for a month” and her dad had to drag her home.
Clearly, she’s far from what people might expect from her as an Asian woman. “We all have different personalities,” Li said. “There are Asian girls [who] listen to punk; Asian girls who listen to hip-hop.” Li wanted to represent this diversity in her show.
Tumblr media

This moment was also huge for Li because, though she has presented eight collections at NYFW in the past, this was her first runway show. Memories of growing up in New Zealand and her mother’s lush garden inspired this very personal collection. When the designer was a child, her room had a sliding door that opened straight into her mother’s flowers. “When I was a toddler … I would walk around in my mom’s garden, and all the flowers just seemed gigantic to me.” The flowers in Li’s collection were inspired by New Zealand’s Mount Cook lily. The soft, buttercup-yellow flower was reimagined as embroidery and 3D lace floral appliqués on dresses, blouses, and coats.

The collection felt excitingly fresh and modern, but still displayed Li’s signature touches: exaggerated sleeves, wide-legged trousers, and exquisite layering. The palette veered between rich and vibrant colors like magenta and cobalt to soft shades like pale yellow, nude, and classic white. Colorful ropes were the connective tissue tying the looks together. They were used around tops, and to cinch up blouses and belt dresses; they dangled like tassels from clutched handbags.

Claudia Li has long been known for her clothing “sets”: two- or three-piece items that pair seamlessly. Li — a busy New York City woman herself — offered these sets to help make dressing easier, with no time wasted in trying to determine what goes with what. In this collection the idea has evolved. “This season we broke it up and it’s a wardrobe,” Li said.
The push for racial diversity in fashion has made strides, but few and far between. In 2017, Kenzo’s Humberto Leon and Carol Lim cast 83 Asian models to show their Spring 2018 collection. It’s the only other example of large Asian representation compared with how many shows featuring all-white model casts? Probably too many to count.
Tumblr media

Awkwafina, star of Crazy Rich Asians, sat front row for this historic show, which was symbolic for many reasons. The film, released this summer, is a major advance for Asian representation in Hollywood. It has since shattered box-office records, becoming the most successful romantic comedy in nine years and grossing over $160 million worldwide so far.
Claudia Li is now part of a group of forward-thinkers pushing the envelope in fashion, film, and the other arts.  Hopefully, her show is only the first of many more diverse moments to come.

Olympic athletes, an MMA Champ, plus size models, and more stun in Khloé Kardashian’s new fitness line
Tumblr media

According to Khloe Kardashian’s Good American co-founder Emma Grede, the denim company’s foray into activewear is going to be game-changer. “The fashion industry is notorious for catering to a specific shape and size,” Grede tells Yahoo Lifestyle. However, thanks to thoughtful designs and a diverse group of women, which the brand is calling the #GoodSquad, Grede and her business partner hope to make a real difference when it comes to inclusivity, diversity, body positivity and female empowerment.
Olympic figure skater Tara Lipinski, MMA Champion Mackenzie Dern, plus-size models Candice Huffine and Precious Lee, fitness trainer and influencer Emily Skye, Olympic swimmer Stephanie Rice, and many more all appear in the company’s latest campaign to promote Good American’s latest endeavor.
And while the women promoting the clothing are cool, the actual items are pretty great too. The fitness-focused collection not only comes in a wide range of sizes, but it’s also affordable, available in sizes XS-3XL and priced from $59-$149. “Good American is designed for a curvier, sexier, stronger shape. From day one, size inclusivity has been baked into our business strategy. We approach product development with our customer’s needs in mind with a fit-first philosophy,” Grede says.

Denim might be Good American’s bread and butter (when it launched in 2016, the company made $1 million in sales on its very first day), but the label has been planning its expansion into other categories for more than a year. “When we think about categories, our goal is always to provide women with wardrobe staples, pieces we know they are wearing in their busy daily lives and ones that make them look and feel their best.  We want women to know that when you come to Good American for anything — denim or activewear — you don’t need to worry about it fitting,” says Grede.

The sportswear collection was designed for the stylish woman who leads a busy day-to-night life and values health and fitness. The color scheme is just black and white for an all-around sleek workout look with sport bras featuring small zippers, cut-outs, or mesh details and leggings featuring color block patterns,  mesh paneling, or skinny white piping. If you’re a fan of the biker shorts look, as popularized by Khloe’s sister Kim Kardashian, you can snag a pair of your own from this collection. Other key pieces include a track jacket, windbreaker and most surprisingly, a wrap top.
At first glance, the collection is undoubtedly fashionable — but will it last? Is it functional and how will its technical performance hold up? All of these questions were top of mind for Grede and her team during the design process. “Each piece was really intentionally designed. For example, we always knew that we wanted the rise of the leggings to be extra high. This was something that was important to the both [co-founder Khloe Kardashian and I] because we know for even our own bodies, that’s way more flattering. We’ve experienced fabric rippling at the top and flipping forward in workouts and that was something we knew we had to get just right and something a lot of women experience,” explains Grede.

Paris Jackson drama might have been the center of attention outside of the Tom Ford show on Wednesday night in New York, but inside was a different story.

Many celebrities convened to watch the debut of the designer’s Spring 2019 ready-to-wear collection, including Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Henry Golding, and Cardi B. Everyone was clad in sleek cocktail party attire, which embodied Ford’s signature old Hollywood style.

They all sat front row alongside Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour and watched as the industry’s top models strutted by on the catwalk in Ford’s new designs. Gigi Hadid, Kaia Gerber, and Joan Smalls were among the A-list models to walk in the show at New York’s Park Avenue Armory Wednesday evening.

Ford’s Spring 2019 collection showcased a series of brocade blazers, metallic sheen suiting, tuxedos, velvet corsets, exotic leather jackets, lace skirts, and leopard print moto jackets. The color palette drifted between harsh blacks and soft nudes, lavender, and blush pinks. Models, both male and female, wore head scarves that complemented each of their looks. Ford’s signature oversize eyewear was incorporated throughout the collection. Forget tiny sunglasses, next season is all about oversize, ’80s-style eyewear. Hadid closed out the show in a whimsical black sheer cape dress.

Curvy model Hunter McGrady believes 'women are to be respected whether they're naked or if they're fully clothed'
Tumblr media

Upon meeting model Hunter McGrady, you instantly feel her warm, kind spirit and infectious smile. It’s no wonder she has been able to champion so many women around the globe to embrace their curves, stretch marks, and cellulite. At just 25 years old, she is already a seasoned Sports Illustrated model and fashion designer, and she’s also a newly engaged woman. McGrady is on a mission to change perceptions of what it means to be beautiful.
McGrady is part of a growing number of curvy models who are making a big splash in the swimwear space, alongside household names like Ashley Graham and Tabria Majors. Recently, McGrady joined Christie Brinkley and Kate Upton in Miami to help with Sports Illustrated‘s model casting call during Miami Swim Week at the Paraiso Fashion Fair. The casting resulted in a spectacular, diverse runway show featuring women of all body types, including Paralympian Brenna Huckaby and a model who breastfed her baby on the catwalk.
These moments are monumental for the body-positive movement, and McGrady says they allow women to think, “‘OK, I am beautiful as I am, and I am worthy, and I am enough,’ and I think that’s so powerful.”
Tumblr media
But as a plus-size model, it’s equally important to work with the right partners who champion diversity and inclusion, like Paraiso Fashion Fair and Sports Illustrated. “Paraiso and its partners are committed to empowering people to feel good about themselves no matter what color, shape, size, background, height, sexual orientation they are,” Sam Ben-Avraham, Paraiso Fashion Fair’s founder, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “We used our stage to make the statement about who we are, how we see the world, and to scream to the world that we are living in times of inclusivity.”

A post shared by Sports Illustrated Swimsuit (@si_swimsuit) on Jul 15, 2018 at 8:07pm PDT
“This year’s representation of models in the Paraiso fashion show was a continuation of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit [issue] messaging that diversity in beauty is very real and very important to represent,” MJ Day, editor in chief of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “It’s something that we believe in passionately, and where better to celebrate that than on the runway in swimwear, where it makes so much sense to our brand!”
But beyond a few supportive brands and partners, there needs to be more significant changes in the societal mindset of what constitutes beauty, McGrady says. “I think that we need to continue growing still. … You know, we’ve always been told as plus-size women that we can’t wear certain things or we can’t show our skin, [but] I’m the first person on the beach in a little tiny string bikini,” she says.
McGrady’s level of body-confidence and positivity appears to be second-nature at this point, but her road to self-love didn’t happen overnight. She began her career modeling at 16 years old as a “straight size model,” she says, a size 2 and 6 feet tall. One day, her whole world changed. “I got turned away from one of my jobs for being too big. And so I … took four years off to really just  grow into my body, eat healthy, [and] nourish myself because I was so unhappy before. And during that time, I really learned to honestly and truthfully tell myself positive affirmations because our mind is so important and it’s so powerful.”

These positive affirmations were central to McGrady’s success in achieving self-love. She says she would look in the mirror and say, “‘Hunter, you are loved. You are worthy. You are powerful. You are beautiful. You are heard’”
But not every day is easy. “I still wake up … when I don’t want to go get out of bed. I don’t want to do anything.” According to McGrady, on those days, the most important thing you can do is “renew your mind and really make it part of your thought process.”

After taking a few years off, McGrady returned to modeling at 19 years old as a plus-size model, signing with the agency Wilhelmina Models on the spot. Since then, McGrady has landed covers for Sports Illustrated and a campaign for Icelandic Glacial, and even launched her own plus-size bathing suit line. McGrady is proud of her body and all of its “flaws.” “The thighs that I once was so nervous about and that touched, they’ve traveled me around the world,” she tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “The stretch marks that I have signifies growth.”
When I was graciously given the opportunity to share my truth and voice with the world through this shoot, I chose my words deliberately, thoughtfully, consciously and responsibly. I know and understand from experience the power of words to hurt or to heal, to hold back or to inspire, to criticize or to embolden, to deliver or to bind. As spoken and written thousands of years ago, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” I wrote an Essay about this incredible project “In Her Own Words” the link is In my bio!

Earlier this year, McGrady posed nude for Sports Illustrated, covered in positive words of affirmation like “worthy,” “confidence,” and “fearless.” Some were critical of the photo shoot in light of the recent #MeToo movement, but for McGrady, the story signified something much bigger. “Women are to be respected whether they’re naked or if they’re fully clothed. … And that is, I think, the most feminist thing you can say.” She adds, “I never posed nude because I wanted anything more than to make women feel good about themselves and feel empowered because I felt empowered. And I felt sexy. I feel more comfortable naked than I do with clothes on. And I deserve the same respect … as anyone else.”

Meet the Mormon sibling models who are taking on the Hadids
yahoo
Move aside Gigi and Bella Hadid — Lucky Blue and Pyper America Smith are about to steal your fashion spotlight. Known for their ice cold, piercing blue eyes and platinum blond hair, the Smiths are models, Mormons, and musicians who star together in Express‘s new denim campaign.
At just 20 and 21, respectively, Lucky and Pyper already possess an impressive resumé that spans much more than just fashion. Lucky boasts over 3 million Instagram followers and has been in campaigns for Tom Ford and Calvin Klein. He’s walked runways across the globe for Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Balmain, Moschino, Jeremy Scott, and more.

Pyper signed with IMG Models in 2017 and has booked jobs for Moncler, Tiffany & Co., and H&M, and walked runways for Giorgio Armani and Moschino. When Pyper is not modeling, she plays bass in her band with Lucky and their two other siblings, Daisy Clementine and Starlie in the Atomics. With the help of Simon Cowell, the band has already booked major gigs, including Coachella.
As for Lucky, aside from traveling the globe and being photographed by Annie Leibovitz, he is a father too. He welcomed his first child, Gravity Blue Smith, in 2017 with his 27-year-old girlfriend and former Miss Teen USA, Stormi Bree. Lucky shares how fatherhood is going with Yahoo Lifestyle, “It’s honestly really rewarding. You’re taking care of another version of you. It’s so fun to watch her learn new things and she grows so fast. It’s crazy. To me there really isn’t a hard part.”

Lucky and Pyper come from a tight-knit Mormon family, originally from Spanish Fork, Utah. It is thanks to their older sister, Daisy, that Pyper and Blue had their big modeling breaks. “Daisy first got scouted and signed. We were living in Utah at that time, and NEXT, our agency in L.A. was like, “You should come out here Daisy, to meet the agency and all the other agents.” So they turned it into a family vacation. My family and my parents were like, “OK, you can meet Lucky as well. I’ll just bring everyone so you can meet them,” Lucky tells V.
Starlie and Daisy have both modeled in the past, but their careers have not skyrocketed to the same level as Lucky and Pyper’s (yet). It’s worth noting that the week after Lucky signed with NEXT, at just 16-years-old, Hedi Slimane (currently creative director at Céline, formerly Saint Laurent) requested to shoot him for Vogue Hommes Japan. The rest is history.

Moving to Los Angeles from their close-knit community in Utah wasn’t easy. “Coming to L.A. and modeling was a complete shock. I never imagined I’d be a part of this industry or what that ever meant. Spanish Fork and Los Angeles are opposite in a lot of ways. I love the yin and yang it’s created inside me,” says Pyper to Yahoo Lifestyle.
But her faith has made Pyper stronger in many ways. “Growing up in the [Mormon] Church and community in Utah has built me up into this person who can [deal with a place like] L.A., which is so busy and crazy,” she says to Marie Claire UK. ‘If I need time to reflect, I have this huge part of me that I just hold on to. It’s kind of like my rock.’

Fortunately for Pyper and Blue, it helps to work together on projects like Express to feel connected to their roots. “I really love being on set with my family. … It’s so easy and comforting to work with my brother,” Pyper tells Yahoo Lifestyle.” Blue adds, “Our family is very close and we’re fortunate that we get to work together so often. I was excited to work with Pyper on the Express denim campaign because I knew we would have a lot of fun doing it together.”
Blue and Pyper model in Express’s new “You + Express Jeans. It’s a Fit” campaign that highlights the brand’s new “denim perfect” collection that features soft, stretchy fabric that helps lift, shape, smooth, and slim the body. The new denim styles are available now on express.com,  starting at just $69.90.

Aside from modeling and playing in a band together, both Pyper and Blue have their sights set on bigger things: acting and film. “I want to continue to do cool projects with awesome designers and stylists and still collaborate with people in this industry. I’d also love to be in movies. My main goal is to get an Oscar, so that’s [going to] happen,” says Blue. Pyper adds, “In the next 20 years, I hope to be writing and directing and performing in TV and film. That world really inspires me. I have a lot to do.”
