Book 42 of 2024
Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman
★★★
Tumblr media
Find the author here. Find the book here.
Thank you to @wella333 and @stripedroseandsketchpads for bringing this to my attention. As of October 2024, Mr. Gaiman is involved in a series of allegations of sexual assault and harassment going back to the 1980s that we know of. There is a very blunt Rolling Stones article about it here. A "Master" podcast by tortoise media here. And a gentler podcast here. I read this book and one other before the allegations came to light in the summer of 2024. If you have to read a book by this author, I'd suggest utilizing your local library or buying secondhand to ensure that the money doesn't go back to the author. And if you or someone you know have been a victim of sexual assault please call the hotline at 800 656 4673.
Pages: 301
Genre: Myth/Legend
Review:
It was a book of super cool takes on the myths from Norse legends. It was easy to digest and read, and very entertaining. I already loved Loki because of Marvel, but these made me love him even more because he is literal chaos.

New Blog Alert!
I made a new sideblog to catalogue and review all the books I read. Right now I've only gotten through my January backlog, but I'm hoping to catch it up to date with my current reads by the end of the month. It's @labyrinths-library if anyone is interested.

"We'll follow the path," she said. "The brightness on the floor."
"The brightness that led us straight into a trap?" Annabeth asked.
"Lay off her, Annabeth," I said. "She's doing the best she can."
Annabeth stood. "The fire's getting low. I'll go look for some more scraps while you guys talk strategy." And she marched off into the shadows.
Rachel drew another figure with her stick--an ashy Antaeus dangling from his chains
"Annabeth's usually not like this," I told her. "I don't know what her problem is."
Rachel raised her eyebrows. "Are you sure you don't know?"
"What do you mean?"
"Boys," she murmured. "Totally blind."

Book 100 of 2024
Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
★★★★
Tumblr media
Learn about the author here. Find the book here.
Pages: 302
Genre: Children's/Fantasy
Review:
So, yes, technically it is about a moving castle owned by a wizard named Howl, but it is moreso the story of a woman named Sophie who is so determined to be unhappy and unsuccessful and instead finds herself being the opposite of that. She gets cursed into becoming an old woman well before her time by The Witch of the Waste, so she leaves her family's hat shop and ends up living in the titular moving castle after making a deal with the house's fire demon, Calcifer. She ends up cleaning house and taking care of the wizard Howl and his apprentice, Michael. The castle has a fancy door that can open up to different locations depending on which color you turn the knob to. Howl has an issue with romancing people and then ghosting them. Sophie has to deal with trying to look after her family while also not letting them know she's been cursed. Chaos ensues. There's a scarecrow that follows her around because she was kind ti him. The ending is completely different from the book, and that is mostly due to a difference in how war is viewed.
This wasn't my first time reading this book, but its been at least ten years since I read it last. The last time I read it was on my Nook Color in either late middle school/early high school. One of my favorite Studio Ghibli movies is based on this book. This is still as magical as when I first read it. I love how ridiculous and dramatic Howl is. Like, he's dramatic in the movie, but book Howl is that times ten. He wants attention or he may actually die. The romance in this is so incredibly subtle when compared to the film, and the film erases a bit of the fact that Howl has some not magical origins. I picked up my copy from Fairy Loot so its this gorgeous hardcover with a reversible dust jacket and sprayed edges.

Well, I timed myself reading Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth By Rick Riordan.
The book is a first edition, 361 pages long and I hit the lap time every 100 pages.
Unfortunately, I do have ADHD and got distracted but I can read 361 pages in about 3 hours and 4 minutes, after a full 8 hour workday. Google says the word count for the book is 85,079 words. About 462 words per minute and 27,743 words per hour. See the screenshots below for reference.

The likely family!! yay!! ive been meaning to get down my scam design as well as making one for mark & the library tbh so this was a good opportunity, and i never pass up a reason to draw hermie
ive been working on family design sheets like this one w/ the main families and was planning on also doing the likelys too anyway so this just gave me the excuse of making it sooner, i also already have the close family down, so i'll be posting that at some point...jodie is featured on that one!

Time is not linear for me.
Imagine your brain is storing all your memories like making a scrapbook. Most people have one giant book that's like a linear timeline of events, each memory gets added one after the other, maybe with footnotes that link events and things together so you can flip to relevant pages to see more memories attached to any given moment. But it's like a linear timeline you can say, this came before this, and then this happened, and so on.
My brain is like, "Oh birthdays? We have a whole book for that?" and as my brain adds the new birthday memory to the birthday scrapbook it looks at some thing in there and goes oh, you don't belong here, and rips a page out, and then turns around and goes into the labyrinthian library to find another book to shove that page into, and it's just like the Hogwarts library, books reshuffling themselves on shelves, pages floating around free, a restricted section that is too easily broken into, and sometimes books in there will just start randomly screaming.
