ALIEN (1979)
In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream? More Like Everyone's Still Quoting This Movie!
Movie: Alien (1979)
Genre: Sci-Fi/Horror, with a generous helping of "Oh Dear God, That's Horrible"
Runtime: 117 minutes (but feels like you're running for your life the whole time)
Made in: England, USA (a truly international screamfest)
The Plot: Space truckers on the Nostromo pick up a distress signal from a seemingly uncharted planetoid. What they find instead is a derelict alien spacecraft and a single, fossilized egg. Big mistake. The egg, of course, hatches a Facehugger (which looks exactly like what its name suggests), and it promptly attaches itself to crew member Kane's face. Cue the chestburster, the goo, the screams, and the iconic line, "Get it off of me!"
From there, it's a race against time as the Xenomorph, a biomechanical killing machine born from Kane's chest, stalks and picks off the crew one by one. Ripley, the ship's Warrant Officer, emerges as the unlikely hero, using her wits, resourcefulness, and a healthy dose of badassery to try and survive.
Cinematography: Ridley Scott, master of suspense, crafts a visual masterpiece that's both hauntingly beautiful and terrifyingly claustrophobic. The dimly lit, industrial corridors of the Nostromo become a labyrinth of shadows where danger lurks around every corner. Scott's use of slow zooms, Dutch angles, and flickering lights heightens the tension and keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Memorable Scenes: There are so many to choose from, but here are a few that stay with you long after the credits roll:
The dinner scene: This one's etched into cinematic history. Kane's chest erupts in a shower of gore, and the Xenomorph bursts forth, all teeth and claws. It's a primal scream of a scene that's as shocking as it is iconic.
Ripley's final showdown with the Xenomorph: Armed with a flamethrower and a steely resolve, Ripley takes on the creature in a heart-pounding battle for survival. It's a testament to Sigourney Weaver's badassery that she makes you believe she can actually win.
The final shot: Ripley escapes the Nostromo in a life pod, the lone survivor. As she drifts away, the Xenomorph watches from the ruined ship, a silent threat in the vast emptiness of space. It's an ending that's both bleak and hopeful, leaving you pondering the fragility of life and the ever-present danger of the unknown.
Personal Rating: 5/5 Xenomorph Bursts.
Alien isn't just a horror masterpiece, it's a masterclass in storytelling. The plot, simple on the surface, unravels with chilling precision, each new discovery tightening the noose of fear around your throat. Ridley Scott's masterful cinematography builds a universe of oppressive shadows and echoing corridors, making space feel impossibly vast and terrifyingly claustrophobic. You're trapped with the crew, every creak and groan sending shivers down your spine.
But Alien isn't just about atmosphere and scares. The acting is phenomenal, with Sigourney Weaver anchoring the film as Ripley, the ultimate everywoman turned reluctant hero. You believe in her fear, her desperation, and ultimately, her triumph. It's a testament to the film's power that this 40-year-old gem still feels fresh and terrifying. It's not just a great alien movie, it's a great movie, period. A timeless reminder that some nightmares haunt even in the vacuum of space.

A look at the anime adaption of "Reign of the Seven Spellblades"
The anime adaption of Sakae Esuno's ongoing manga, Reign of the Seven Spellblades, is currently airing. These 13 episodes will hopefully serve as the first season of many to come... but time will have to tell on that front.
Although this is an adaption Sakae Esuno's manga, the sad truth is that the RotSS manga is not an original story by my fav mangaka. Instead, his manga is itself an adaption of an already-successful series of light novels written by a totally different author — Bokuto Uno, who previously wrote the series Alderamin on the Sky. The point is that although this anime is an adaption of Sakae Esuno's adaption, Esuno ultimately has a limited influence on the storytelling. He basically provides a system of organization for the episodic storytelling and an overall storyboard for the visual presentation. He also was the first to portray some of the side characters in any artwork, so he likely is behind their visual design.
But that's about where his influence ends! It's not like we can expect a series of insane cliffhangers, shocking betrayals, and characters who're playing psychological games like we find in his self-written works.
......................OR CAN WE??
Yeah okay maybe CAN expect some of that, but we'll get into it.
A quick overview: Reign of the Seven Spellblades takes place at Kimberly Academy, an English* magical school for would-be mages. Students begin at age 15 and generally attend for seven years. Most students get in by virtue of their family's magical lineage, but there are also those who get scouted for their aptitude as well as those who come from families with no magical background, meaning that they have to pass a difficult test to attend. Classes include alchemic potions, magical combat, magical creatures, herbology... if you were to assume this all sounds rather like "Anime Harry Potter," you'd be PRECISELY right. At first, that is.
We follow a group of friends who are quickly pulled together by an incident that occurs during the year's opening ceremony. Our two primary leads are:
Oliver Horn, a dark-haired nice guy who's studied magic before coming here and has some mild skill as a result. He's eager to help his fellow first-years, but he's followed around by a mysterious bodyguard for reasons that are initially unknown.
Nanao Hibiya, an Asian* student who is very much a "fish out of water" in this environment. Nanao was scouted by a member of the school's faculty while she was fighting as a samurai on the battlefields of Muromachi-era Japan*; she doesn't know much beyond war, or even much outside of her home nation.
Our semi-likely heroes.
*RotSS takes place in a world that mirrors our Earth's map and borders despite not sharing our country and continent names. So in actuality, the series doesn't call England "England" or refer to Japan as "Japan." Still, these fake-named countries share the history, culture, and geography of the real ones they're based on, so I'm using the real-world names for simplicity's sake. They're the same in every way EXCEPT their names.
This is all merely the tip of the iceberg, because I'm not going to get into issues like the struggle for demi-human rights or the fact/concern that 20% of the academy's students historically die before they can graduate. There's even a labyrinth beneath the school that contains some cool beasts as well as a very disturbing, are-we-really-doing-this one that I'd rather not talk about, THANK-YOU-VERY-MUCH.
But I digress; the first six episodes of the anime primarily focus on getting to know more about the world, the complicated politics within it, how some of the magic works, and — of course — the personalities of our characters. This includes explaining what exactly a "Spellblade" is. (For the record, it's not a magic sword.)
It's not until the end of the sixth episode— much later than the standard "three-episode rule" will carry any skeptical viewers — that we get the reveal that changes what we thought this show was about. And that reveal provides the story with the cynical edge I've come to expect from Sakae Esuno. (Naturally, in the light novels this is a reveal that drops at the end of the very first book.)
SPOILERS FOR Reign of the Seven Spellblades BELOW THE CUT
In an amazingly left-field twist, we learn that Oliver Horn is actually the son of a woman who championed equality among mages and wanted to stop the encroachment of magical beings from other realities who were entering our world and taking over communities. She was trying to change the landscape of the culture — especially in regards to how it was causing suffering in Europe's most oppressed and impoverished communities. But when Oliver was just a child, his mother was betrayed by seven former comrades. They tortured her and murdered her, with the final strike being executed by her best friend... who is now the headmistress of Kimberly Academy.
In fact, all seven of those former allies of Oliver's mother are now on the faculty of the academy. And Oliver is attending this academy solely to kill them all. To that end, he's manipulating said faculty through his actions, carefully maneuvering their attention to serve his interests. I won't get into exactly how he can successfully kill these mages who're at a far higher level than him, but suffice to say that the answer is QUITE satisfying.
Oliver's not even his mother's last relative, as he also has cousins and other allies embedded within the student body who are here to support his quest. Once he kills his first quarry, he's declared the leader of their group. But even as OIliver continues on his mission, the lessons of Nanao's samurai code has gotten him wondering whether the path of vengeance will truly satisfy him.
Frankly, I hope it continues to satisfy him, because it sure as hell satisfies ME. The way Oliver takes out his first victim is such a left-field twist and utterly goddamn awesome. This show went from "anime Harry Potter" to "HOLY FUCK this is unbelievably badass" in less than 10 minutes. And the flashbacks to his mother's horrific betrayal aligned very well with Sakae Esuno's established cynicism regarding human nature.
Now that we have a mission of revenge and murderous justice to follow, the whole setup is instantly much more than what it first appeared to be. And it's impressive how they managed to keep the biggest reveals completely hidden until it was time to spring them on the audience while simultaneously still laying groundwork, obscurely hinting at the twist to come without ever tipping their hand.
So yeah, I'm a fan of this. I imagine I'd like it even more if it was totally Esuno's baby, because that's just how much of a mark I am for his work, but this is still great stuff with a really nice cast of characters at its center.

'Just another remake? No! In a time of over-stimulating “brain rot”, Ripley mercifully redefines pace through intimate thought, glorious black-and-white imagery and a dash of brutal murder. Directed by Steven Zaillian, this suspense thriller Netflix series (Netflix – I know!) is a neo-noir Hitchcock classic brought to 2024. As the second remake of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, Zaillian’s show vitally turns the famous story’s attention to tone, presentation and immaculately crafted details. From Venice to Sicily, Ripley tours Italy’s rich cultural history through paint, sculpture, and gothic Italian architecture, where twisting stairways and caverned corners echo the story’s complex psychological labyrinth.
Ripley is Outstanding
Robert Elswit’s cinematography is nothing short of outstanding. With wide frames and a fixation on space, each achromic shot becomes a voyeuristic painting of light, shadow and depth haunting Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) at every turn. Abstaining from overly emotional music, Zaillian provides Ripley’s intensely ominous sound design with full audial focus and cunningly manipulates it to personify objects as characters haphazardly conducting the narrative.
In a world where we’ve become desensitised to murder on screen, Ripley redefines what it means and takes to kill. The show’s presentation of systematic murder focuses on the more laborious, mundane and isolating angles of the act. Zaillian proceeds each death with nearly 30-minute-long silent clean-up scenes in excruciating “real-time” detail (which I insist do not once lose your attention). Often glorified by the cool action of violence in cinema, Ripley feels like a long-awaited reminder that murder is, surprise surprise, inhumane, awful, cruel, and (judging by Scott’s phenomenal performance), just plain-right exhausting.
Is he relatable?
Despite being directly exposed to Ripley’s psychopathy, you cannot help but empathise with his struggle, his trial-and-error methodology, and ultimately his mistakes. Although not a new approach to antagonistic characters, the show’s periods of patient silence allow full transparency into Tom’s mind. Instead of being spoon-fed the ins and outs of the protagonist’s choices, the viewer is forced to conclude Tom’s next action independently. Here, your synchronising thoughts immerse you in the killer’s mind. Becoming one and the same, you are forced to sit, guilty, in the complicity of the crime.
But dont let that stop you! Besides your sweaty palms, Ripley’s relentless tale of deception, duality and desire is guaranteed to obsess you. A remake to be treasured, the show is a visual, audial and narrative triumph that takes a fresh dark psychological spin on the adored crime classic and I cannot applaud it enough.'

Understanding Ovarian Cancer: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Introduction
Ovarian cancer, a significant yet often insidious disease, affects thousands of women worldwide. Its subtle symptoms and lack of early detection methods contribute to its reputation as the “silent killer.” This article aims to shed light on the various aspects of ovarian cancer, from its development and risk factors to diagnosis, treatment options, and survivorship. By understanding the complexities of this disease, we can empower individuals to recognize potential signs, advocate for regular screenings, and stay informed about the latest advances in research and treatment. Together, we can break the silence surrounding ovarian cancer and make strides toward improved awareness, prevention, and ultimately, better outcomes for those affected.
1. Understanding Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer, a formidable healthcare challenge, is a complex disease demanding attention. Comprehending its intricacies, from risk factors like genetics and age to its elusive symptoms, is crucial. This article navigates through the labyrinth of ovarian cancer, enlightening readers about its nuances, diagnostic methods, treatment options, and emerging healthcare strategies. By fostering understanding, we empower individuals to actively participate in their healthcare journey, promoting timely diagnosis and informed decisions. As medical research evolves, a collective effort to grasp the intricacies of ovarian cancer can drive advancements in healthcare practices, bridging gaps in early detection, treatment, and patient well-being.
2. Risk Factors
Ovarian cancer risk factors encompass a spectrum of influences that range from genetic predispositions to lifestyle choices. Inherited mutations in genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 substantially elevate susceptibility, while a family history of ovarian or breast cancer amplifies risk. Age, with the majority of cases occurring after menopause, and hormonal factors like never having been pregnant or starting menstruation early are pivotal. Obesity and certain hormone therapies also play roles. Awareness of these risk factors empowers individuals and healthcare providers to implement proactive measures. Regular screenings, genetic counseling, and lifestyle adjustments can collectively contribute to early detection and a heightened potential for effective intervention.
3. Symptoms and Early Detection
Ovarian cancer’s symptoms are often subtle, making early detection a healthcare management challenge. Bloating, abdominal pain, and urinary urgency, while common, are easily overlooked. This article delves into recognizing these indicators and the importance of healthcare management for timely diagnosis. Educating individuals about persistent symptoms can bridge the gap between inconspicuous discomfort and proactive medical attention. Enhanced healthcare management involves advocating for comprehensive check-ups, discussing symptoms openly with healthcare providers, and considering risk factors. By raising awareness about the subtle signs of ovarian cancer, we promote a proactive approach to healthcare that aids in swift diagnosis and improved outcomes.
4. Diagnosis
Ovarian cancer diagnosis is a multifaceted process involving diverse medical techniques. Physical examinations, medical history assessment, and imaging tests like ultrasounds aid in identifying abnormalities. Biomarker tests such as CA-125, while not definitive, provide additional insight. Laparoscopy often confirms the diagnosis through direct visualization. Accurate staging determines the extent of cancer spread, impacting treatment decisions. The complexity of diagnosis necessitates a collaborative effort between patients and healthcare professionals. Early intervention relies on recognizing symptoms, engaging in regular screenings, and promptly discussing concerns with healthcare providers. This comprehensive diagnostic approach empowers individuals with information, fostering proactive decision-making and ultimately improving the chances of successful treatment.
5. Stages of Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer stages, ranging from I (localized) to IV (advanced), critically influence healthcare strategies. Staging determines the extent of cancer’s reach, guiding treatment planning and prognosis assessment. In early stages, cancer is confined to ovaries, allowing for targeted healthcare interventions. Advanced stages pose complex challenges, often requiring a comprehensive healthcare approach involving surgery, chemotherapy, and personalized therapies. Healthcare providers consider staging alongside patient health to tailor effective treatments. Regular healthcare check-ups and adherence to recommended screenings are pivotal in detecting ovarian cancer at earlier, more manageable stages. This collective healthcare effort not only enhances treatment outcomes but also empowers patients to actively participate in their well-being, promoting a holistic approach to ovarian cancer management.
6. Treatment Options
Ovarian cancer treatment options are diverse, reflecting the multidimensional healthcare approach necessary for effective management. Surgery is a cornerstone, aiming to remove cancerous tissue and determine the extent of disease spread. Healthcare professionals often employ debulking surgery to reduce tumor burden before chemotherapy. Chemotherapy, a systemic treatment, targets cancer cells throughout the body, underscoring the collaborative role of healthcare in eradicating residual cancer. Emerging therapies like targeted treatments and immunotherapy personalize interventions, highlighting the importance of healthcare tailored to individual genetic profiles. Healthcare management doesn’t end with treatment; survivorship care ensures ongoing monitoring and support. A comprehensive healthcare strategy, encompassing surgery, medical treatments, and post-treatment care, optimizes patient outcomes, fostering a continuum of care that addresses the holistic needs of those battling ovarian cancer.
7. Emerging Treatments and Research
Emerging treatments and research in ovarian cancer offer promising horizons in healthcare. PARP inhibitors, a breakthrough class of drugs, target specific genetic mutations, improving treatment precision. Immunotherapy harnesses the immune system to recognize and combat cancer cells, presenting a novel approach. Clinical trials explore these innovations, pushing the boundaries of healthcare possibilities. Research delves into identifying biomarkers for early detection and predicting treatment responses, facilitating personalized care. These advancements underscore healthcare’s dynamic nature, adapting to incorporate cutting-edge therapies. The synergy between researchers, healthcare providers, and patients fuels the evolution of ovarian cancer management. As science evolves, the horizon of possibilities expands, offering renewed hope and improved outcomes for individuals battling this challenging disease.
8. Survivorship and Quality of Life
Ovarian cancer survivorship intertwines with healthcare’s commitment to enhancing quality of life. Beyond treatment, survivors navigate physical and emotional challenges, underscoring the holistic nature of healthcare. Post-treatment follow-up, monitoring, and support networks ensure ongoing well-being. Addressing survivors’ unique needs, healthcare providers offer counseling, rehabilitation, and strategies to manage long-term effects. Quality of life is central, encompassing physical vitality, emotional resilience, and social connectedness. Survivorship care empowers individuals to regain their sense of normalcy, fostering a renewed appreciation for life. By valuing survivor experiences and promoting their overall well-being, healthcare transforms into a holistic journey that acknowledges the past, embraces the present, and paves the way for a brighter, healthier future.
9. Prevention and Awareness
Prevention and awareness form a crucial partnership in combating ovarian cancer within the realm of healthcare. Lifestyle choices, including maintaining a healthy weight and adopting regular exercise, play a pivotal role in reducing risk. Advocating for routine medical check-ups and screenings, healthcare providers empower early detection. Heightened awareness about risk factors and symptoms equips individuals to recognize potential warning signs and seek timely medical attention. Public education campaigns and support networks amplify awareness, underscoring the collective responsibility in advocating for women’s health. By fostering a culture of prevention and awareness, healthcare transforms from reactive interventions to proactive empowerment, ultimately contributing to a future where ovarian cancer’s impact is minimized.
10. Conclusion
In conclusion, the battle against ovarian cancer showcases the indispensable role of a comprehensive healthcare approach. From early detection to survivorship, healthcare professionals, patients, and support networks collaborate to navigate this complex journey. As exemplified by QMe Hospital Management and Information System, cutting-edge technologies enhance healthcare delivery, streamlining diagnostics, treatment, and post-treatment care. With continued research advancements and heightened awareness, we envision a future where ovarian cancer’s impact is significantly diminished. By embracing proactive measures, personalized care, and innovative systems, healthcare evolves into a force that not only fights disease but empowers individuals, fostering a landscape where hope, resilience, and well-being prevail.

High in the Lowlands: Fly Fishing For Snook, Tarpon, and Redfish in the Everglades from World Angling on Vimeo.
worldangling.com In the past, Dave and I tried hard to get people excited about fly fishing. Our goal was to make the audience feel what we feel every time we head out on the flats. The final result was a high action, high intensity, visual montage with hard hitting music to convey the emotion. Needless to say, it got lots of anglers out there fired up, and it was a blast to create! But then there were the nay-sayers, the grumps that didn't like what we were doing to their sport, didn't like the attitude, and called our films porn. Great! Everybody has to start somewhere and lots of folks in Hollywood began in the porn industry. Dave and I didn't go to school for film, we barely knew how to run a camera when we started, but we were tired of the same old crap that failed to communicate what fishing was really about to us. So, we tried harder than we've ever tried at anything to make films that showed how much fun you can have with a fly rod living the life of a saltwater fish bum. After a while though, we knew we'd have to grow up. If we wanted to be part of the Fly Fishing Film Tour and call ourselves film makers, we'd have to create an actual film with an actual story. So, I began reading Peter Matthiessen's Shadow Country... the ultimate story about the Everglades to find inspiration. Dave and I wanted to make a story about something meaningful, something bold and powerful, something that really drove to the core of what fly fishing is for us. We wanted to tell a rich and complex story about the Everglades history, the Indians, the animals that live there, especially the fish, and why we were there. We wanted to talk about Robber Barons, drug smugglers and fisher folk, the birth of saltwater angling in the Everglades... and we really wanted to make the connection, to equate ourselves and fly fishing with them. We wanted to use words like narrow creek system, jagged branches, nooks and crannies, hidden shadows, gator filled swamps, mosquito infested lagoons, and labyrinth mangrove mazes. We would paint our picture with every detail and ultimately transcend the human drama and reveal the Zen of flyfishing. The Discovery Channel would be envious, and National Geographic would weep, and our critics would be silenced. At the end, we would close with a glorious aerial shot and a narrative that summarized 1,000 years of history, the deepest meaning of fishing and the symbolism behind our adventure deep into the soul of the Shadow Country.
Problem was, we were two dudes and a laptop, and neither one of us could even come close to saying all that, much less shoot it, edit it and deliver it in one month. I wasn't Peter Matthiessen, and Dave wasn't Spielburg. We didn't have Pixar or Industrial Light and Magic to digitally enhance our snook. Really, all we had was 2 broken cameras, a skiff that hellsbayboatworks.com lent to us, a couple of looptackle.com fly rods, and a bunch of our best friends that were always down for an adventure. But, off we went... a procession of flats boats headed south into the Everglades to camp and fish for a week, and with any luck, make movie magic on the sands of Turkey Key.
Fast forward two weeks, Dave and I are in the editing Studio we call the Rathole, hanging with Nate Augustus and the Gladezmen (facebook.com/gladezmen) watching them create the soundtrack and looking over our masterpiece...Every film maker has at one point had to come to terms with seeing themselves on camera for the first time and it is a very, very painful process. So there we were, realizing for the first time, that we completely and utterly sucked! Everything we said was basically garbage! But... therein lies the truth, and once you come to realize it, it's hysterical. You've never laughed so hard, cried at yourself with the understanding that nothing that you want to say is good, and that nobody cares. Really, the only thing that is of real importance is that we like to fish, that fishing is exciting, and that we just want to do more!
Suddenly we had it. There is was right in front of us. What we were trying to get at is that we love to fish, we get our stoke from fishing and that everyone else has there own reason . That's the story. Fishing is what gives us that rush, that high, if you will, and for whatever reason, it's what we've devoted our lives to doing. Now, maybe the critics won't agree, but, I bet, for those that fish, they'll get it. With that...WorldANGLING gives you High In The Lowlands!
