How am I just now realizing how hot everyone in Labyrinth of Lies is??

(long post so I'm putting it under a cut)

Buckle up, because I am hoping that I had the right idea when thought I was wrong for a long time.

This sequence was all a nice bit of exposition, but I couldn't help but wonder, along with our main P'Cir, what the hap was fuckening. Our Cirrus had believed this 'parallel worlds' thing was something he made up for himself - a coping mechanism to escape the environment of abuse and control. Sure, it felt real when he dreamt about it, but dreams can feel that way for some people, right?

That's a whole lot of things at once. I have WAY more questions now. The way this other Cirrus was acting before made it seem like he was a dark version our main P'Cir and reveling in his torment. And he possibly is, but it turns out that it's also because he has spent some time in torment.

I wanna take us back to @negrowhat's post, because there was definitely some weird stuff going on, with the dream world and the real world feeling a little blurred together. I'm not sure how the dreams connect with reality, only that they do to some extent.

They're all taking turns in this time-space pocket dimension where one half is a padded cell and the other looks like the clock section of a monochromatic home furnishing store. Literal cycle of violence. Hell even.

So, if Cirrus didn't make this, then who did? Why?

HMMMMMM

Cirrus and Phukan have an indelible connection. And we have seen that either one will pursue the other in any given timeline. But it's Cirrus who experiences this torment.

As for my theory, I mentioned it briefly as far back as episode 3. Just gonna recap it here:

DARK!PHUKAN TELL ME YOU'RE OUT THERE!!!!!!

It would just tickle me greatly to see everything be inverted. The lies, the confusion, the betrayal, and the way Phukan seems to be a perfect angel created to make every single Cirrus in the mulitverse melt. All of that flipped on its head to reveal that dark!Cir is merely the current secretary of this realm, passing on what little knowledge he has to the nth P'Cir, having spent his time in that blinding white hell after meeting the boy of his dreams and itching to go home. That in some timeline, the original one even, Cirrus left Phukan and the nature of it was so devastating that it twisted him up inside. And somehow, he's made this sort of time-space labryinth, and will toy with every iteration he can find of his P'Cir until he gets the right ending.

I still have huge doubts that there is anything like that actually going on, but now that we have parallel world business back on the menu, I will take a big ass bite out of that plate! And I need to see Noeul be a villain. For reasons.

Sitting upon his throne, the king slumped with boredom. Watching his goblin henchmen run around, guffawing at the mischief they caused.

Thinning his lips, he summoned a crystal ball from thin air. The visage in the crystal turned to an image of you, happy, joyous and—in the arms of—someone—that's not him!

He smirked with a cocky bravado. "So, the swaine has decided his sweet paramour."

He scoffed. "My, how tragically quaint."

"How is it, you, dear y/n, could choose a doltish commoner over a ruling king? Such a baffling exasperation."

The king decided enough was enough and declared you shall be his whether you liked it or lumped it.

You chuckled lightly speaking to your partner. The winds picked up as you walked alone with them along the sidewalk. You weren't the fanciest of folk. You didn't believe in showing your grandest gestures all over the internet.

All that made you happy was a cup of tea, in front of the TV with them in your arms.

As you got back home, locked up for the night preparing to get ready for bed. You heard a whisper, a little voice in the wind. "Y/n".

You turned around. Your eyes widened, your lips parted.

Nothing. Your mind was playing tricks on you again.

"If there's a ghost, I swear." You muttered.

You made it to your bedroom. Your partner was brushing their teeth in the bathroom.

You wandered over to the window, opening it wide, letting the air come in.

A blur flew in through the window. You ducked confused.

You looked up, seeing a barn owl perched on your shelf. It turned its head to look at you.

You blinked twice, reaching out to the owl when you heard. "Y/n, y/n, the ever so prudent creature. Have you any idea of how you turned my world upside down."

The owl, in a flash, transformed into a man before you. Your lips unfurled, as if seeing a rabbit being pulled from a hat. He had sharp features with glam make up, donning a flowing jacket.

Confused you backed up. "What? How?"

"When? Where?" He sardonically smiled. "Really y/n, and I thought you'd be joyous to see my return."

"What do you want." You asked.

He snickered "must I spell it out for you."

"Oh, fine, I'll humour you, I've grown dreary watching you. I've come to take you away from your droll life." He leaned against the wall.

"Uh, how about no and leave, I don't want T/N to see you." Your eyebrows furrowed.

"Oh, them, that thing, come now y/n even your above, that."

"They have a name actually, they are finely suited for me, and I love them."

"How my world is shattered, your breaking my world y/n" he grinned sarcastically.

You crossed your arms. "I know where my heart lies thank you."

"Is that so? Very well, would be awfully dreadful if one were to—oh—ruin your evening." In thin air he summoned a crystal ball.

The ball showed your partner in another dimension, trapped in a prison.

"What, that's an illusion!."

"See for yourself."

You rushed to the bathroom to see if they were there. Low and behold, he wasn't.

"What? Why would you do that!"

"I did warn you y/n, you can't deny the circumstance you placed yourself effortlessly into."

"Give him back!" You pushed to grab the ball only for your world to swirl around you, he disappeared into a puff of glitter.

"I'll give you three hours y/n to find where your swaine lies in my labyrinth or become trapped here with him forever."

This is in part a response to the 3/10 reviewer.

Adaptations obviously cannot have every single thing perfect to the book, just time wise it's impossible. But I think this series was made with a lot of love by everyone involved and it shows. Every interview I've seen and the show itself make it clear it's also important to them, and they want to make a good version.

A lot of issues that I read I think can be solved with having more of the story. Like, his mom has given him blue candy, explanation might come later, like in the talks the trio has during the quest. Or the council of the cloven elders doesn't even appear in the books until the Battle of the Labryinth. We don't need an explanation yet. Without knowledge of the books I would assume oh the visually important nature ppl are the ppl in charge of the satyrs. Which like.. yeah good enough for now. And it gives Grover more depth from the start. And there are hints of Luke's bitterness, such as "They like the smell of begging" when they go for offerings. We also haven't even left camp yet, there's time to develop that.

Luke's emphasis on glory was more about from other campers, I took it as a hint of Luke's desire to feel powerful. Luke also clearly values glory in the books as well - he failed to attain glory by completing his quest and it eats at him. Two, the addition makes sense if you're familiar with the Iliad, glory is heavily emphasized and a complex theme throughout, but I will not be digging out any college essays lol. I think it's definitely something that is going to be developed as a theme throughout.

Luke is a supportive counselor in the book. He's literally the head counselor in charge of shepherding the kids once they get there and likely spend their first night in the Hermes cabin. Plus in Ch. 7, he talks to Percy about being new and warns Percy not to take the offerings lightly, in Ch. 8 trains him on the sword, saying "No laughing at Percy" during the demo, and is thrilled when Percy disarms him.

A word about Gabe, we see Gabe for 9 pages in the beginning of the book. He harasses Percy, demands food from Sally, and is grumpy about them using the car. I was at first bothered by Gabe looking just kinda like a couch potato, but it was pointed out to me that abusers don't just all wear wife beaters and are streaked with grime. In the show he answers, Sally's phone, a controlling behavior. He harasses Percy when he gets in the door, and is almost pleased that Percy got kicked out for assault, a violent behavior. I'm still interested with how they are going to bring in the "Smelly Gabe" covering Percy's scent (which I always was a bit confused how that worked really well if Percy was at boarding school 90% of the time.) And I'm wondering how they are going to make him be deemed worthy of being murdered with Medusa's head by the audience. He appears on the news telling lies about Percy throughout the book and Percy doesn't realize that Sally has been hit before by Gabe until the end of the book. So, those are more ways to bring that in.

While I watched it, it didn't feel very rushed, but that might be because I had context from the books. Looking back it's a fast, but I'd rather have a longer time questing, and that's a trade-off. It's just unfortunate that even an established property can't get a longer run time.

One of my biggest worries was that the fighting would be cringe but I think they pulled it off Really well. It's visually great, and while I have my personal vision of CHB that didn't stop me from loving the show's version. It's also funny! I laughed out loud multiple times. There's tons of little details you get to hunt for from the book. The actors make you believe they are the characters. I've been living with versions in my head for over 15 years and I fully accept these guys as the trio. An open mind and ability to allow multiple versions to live in your head are definitely key to enjoying it as a long time fan.

I'm doing my best to avoid ppls garbage opinions, especially people new to the fandom, but I've seen enough lousy opinions from people who have been in the fandom forever to think it's a problem only in new ppl. Twitter has just been a lot of great edits and memes which is super fun.

Sorry for the length, that I got the book out, and that this was way too in depth for what you originally asked.

sorry for getting to this a little late! personally, i feel like i can't comment on the show yet, since i haven't watched it, but everyone's entitled to their own opinion as long as we're all being respectful here, as you're being. i hope 3/10 anon sees your version of things, and i'm glad you enjoyed the show!
