Conditioning occurs all the time in society.
Today, I was just doing Duolingo Irish, and they have this matching words exercise. The English word was NURSE. I couldn't find BANALTRA, which is what I learned from a very young age as the word for NURSE. There was, however, the world ALTRA, which I matched. Never in my many years of education in the Irish school system was the world ALTRA used for NURSE. It was always BANALTRA. We were being conditioned from a young age that NURSES ARE WOMEN! For those that are not familiar with the Irish language, when the word BAN is in front of a profession, it is a woman in that profession. My tiny, just about 4 year old brain only comprehended the word BANALTRA that I was shown as the name for NURSE, and I kept it for all time until today. By the way, Google Translate still has BANALTRA.... so nurses are only women ......Mad.

Níl a lán Gaeilge agam anois. Tá sé imithe as mo cheann fiche bhliain ó shin, nuair a d’fhág mé an scoil. Ach tá cúpla focail agam, ar an lá labhair do theanga.

dia duit seb! seo roinnt ceisteanna do lá labhair do theanga, ✌ agus ☮ ?!?
✌ - favourite proverb/saying from your language
an seanfhocal "is fearr Gaeilge briste ná Béarla cliste" mar tá sé an-ábhartha dom. ach is é "go tobann" an frása is fearr liom ní féidir liom stopadh á rá seo
☮ - translate the first lines of your favourite song in your language
is trua sin nach bhfuil sí ann, peaca nach bhfuil sé cam, is í an t-aon cailín amháin a raibh grá agam, Andrew i draig
- Andrew in Drag le the Magnetic Fields

Ceapaim gurb rud brónach é nach labhraítear Gaeilge chomh minic is mar a bheadh. Chomh maith le sin, an chaoi go gcaitheann daltaí as gaelscoileanna í ar leath-taobh nuair a chríochnaíonn siad an bhunscoil.
Ní tharlaíonn an dara rud sin an t-am ar fad, mé féin, mar shampla. Creidim go dtarlaíonn an dara rud mar gheall ar an gcéad rud. Mar gheall nach gcreideann daoine go mbeidh an Ghaeilge ag teastáil uathu ina gcuid saol. Ní bhíonn muid ag labhairt as Gaeilge, agus mar sin de ní labhraíonn na daoine óga sin í, agus déanann siad dearmad fútha.
An cheist ná "Céard a ndéafaidh muid faoi?" Agus tá freagra simplí ann. An teanga a labhairt. Má tá 's 'ad go bhfuil Gaeilge acu, labhair leo i nGaeilge. Agus muna bhfuil, úsáid í ar aon nós! D'freagróidís i nGaeilge má tá Gaeilge acu, nó déarfaidís nach bhfuil Gaeilge acu. Nó b'fhéidir go ndearfaidís rud éigin gránna faoin teanga, ach sin daoine óga don chuid is mó, agus is grúpa fíorbheag iad

i didn’t know i needed this until now but i Need it so here’s some irish dorcas hcs from an irish speaker/gaeilgeoir:
• literally has been dancing since she could walk. her feis dresses are always the most stunning thing
• strong strong believer in “labhair cibé gaeilge atá agat” and “is fearr gaeilge bhriste ná béarla cliste”
• she’s constantly surrounded by english people. she’s gonna speak and write as gaeilge as often as possible out of spite
• has a claddagh ring that’s been passed down in her family for generations. she uses it to propose to her gf (marlene in my opinion but i love you dorlily shippers)
• plays the tin whistle. it’s mandatory if you’re irish actually. never met an irish person that can’t play
• i’d also love to see dorcas playing the harp
• camogie player dorcas?? would threaten to beat someone with her hurl
• goes to mass a lot for someone who is not a practicing catholic. probably even wears a cross necklace
i think it’s time that we as a fandom collectively decide to have dorcas’ fancast be ayo edebiri and also make dorcas irish. it’s just the right thing to do.

Random vocab as Gaeilge
Dia daoibh! I haven’t been active here lately, so here’s a small everyday vocab list I made while watching this vlog as Gaeilge. I recommend focloir.ie to check pronunciation.
cathair - city sráid - street siopa - shop siopa leabhar - bookshop leabhar - book árasán - apartment milseog - dessert Baile Átha Cliath - Dublin city i lár na cathrach - in the city centre
nua - new difriúil - difficult neirbhíseach - nervous ciúin - quiet aisteach - strange teolaí - cozy gleoite - cute tuirseach - tired
oibrigh - to work ceannaigh - to buy labhair - to speak glan - to clean
Tá brón orm - I’m sorry Ní chreidim é - I don’t believe it Tá tuirse orm or Tá me tuirseach - I’m tired Tá mé ar ais sa bhaile anois - I’m back home now Tá mo árasán bunoscionn - my apartment is upside down, my apartment is messy
Note on the verb labhair
Labhraíonn sí Gaeilge agus Béarla gach re seal - she speaks Irish and English alternately (she switches between two languages as she speaks at the moment)
but Tá Gaeilge ghlan aici - she speaks flawless Irish (she has excellent command of Irish, she’s proficient Irish speaker)
Bascially, if you want to say that someone has a good command of language, you use verb tá and a prepositional pronoun (I made a post abt this a while ago). Labhair is used to describe the act of speaking.
