Getting my RPG on! I now have all three volumes of Nis Classics Collection. These are Nintendo switch ports of some late 90's, older 2000's rpgs. They've been previously on ps1, ps2, psp and wii.
Volume 1 has Soul Nomad and Phantom Brave.
Volume 2 has Makai Kindom and ZHP
Volume 3 has La Pucelle and Rhapsody
These games are a great bang for your buck as their original versions now command a premium. If you're a fan of funny, quirky RPG games, either one of these is a solid choice.

Finally playing La Pucelle. I tried this game way back when I was like in middle school I think, but I really couldn’t get anywhere due to not understanding the mechanics at all back then. Shot plenty of rope over Prier though .
Really fun so far. The enemy capture mechanic feels a lot more necessary and well integrated then it ever was in Disgaea.

La Pucelle: Ragnarok Review
youtube
that demon killed my son crouton
yeah i mean its a pretty good game. early on i didn't really understand the portals and the miracle shit and i thought it was stupid, i mostly kind of dismissed it because when i found out the chapters had different endings i wanted to make sure i was getting the good endings but the guide was like So what you're gonna wanna do here is level Prier for like an hour or 2 by running the 3rd map in the game until shes over leveled and she one shots everything because she has crazy strong items and i was like well i'm not fucking doing that. but anyways when i finally got the hang of doing mass miracles i realized how fun it was to line up my little guys so the portal energy bounces all around the map a bunch of times. other than the fact this game is a little too trailspilled with their age gaped straight people the story and characters are fun to be around. its my job to complain about this so i will, fucking Homard or Homare Simpson whatever his fucking name is needs to leave eclair alone. Culotte can have his stupid fucking crush on Alouette nobody cares hes a stupid little kid and sucks ass and is pretty much your worst human unit until Papillion joins the party at level 1 with 8 health hes literally just along for the ride whatever say whatever you want lil bro your an ant. and all i can really say about Prier and Croix is a mid ass couple. this game is not long enough nor do they have enough chemistry for me to care about them as a couple. honestly its basically just a formality and a legal mandate because obviously "wanting to be the maiden of light to make her dead parents proud and prove herself and protect her brother and whatever other things you want to lump into this or explain her behavior" is not good enough for a character motivation but "fell for this dude who she just met who's kind of just chilling to be honest and doesn't even really do or say anything to initiate or indicate romantic feelings " is the only motivation a woman can have these days. sad! anyways like i was saying homare homard needs to leave eclair alone there's literally no excuse shes like 12 dude youre sick kururu should've had you killed
anyways sorry for the negative rant this is a cute little game prier is cool i had fun. not going back to special endings sorry its cool she gets to do that shit though
the truth is i wrote all that in the middle of chapter 11 then went and played chapter 12 its so fucking fun doing mass miracle chains in the cave of ordeals or whatever its called that shit tastes so fucking good. im still not going to do the postgame overlord Prier mode i'm good to move on. the ending fucking sucked tbh i already said i thought Prier and Croix had mid chemistry and then it got even fucking worse because Prier was like i'm gonna watch over you the rest of your life and the SECOND he gets his live back hes like i'm just gonna go fuck off for a while and i have no idea when i'll be back. oh and Homar is marrying a child. Cool guys i'm really glad i invited you all to my birthday party

Stop the freaking presses! Going through my vids I found out that a glorious thing has happened. Nippon Ichi has Remastered AND TRANSLATED Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure's two sequels in a game collection! I did read the translation FAQs for both games back in the day during my first La Pucelle kick (for those of you who don't know...La Pucelle is actually set in the same world and the protagonist of Rhapsody's first sequel and her love interest are Homard's parents...the Ragnarok version's DLC encounter with Cornet has him react to seeing a younger version of his grandmother).
#you do not know how important this is to me#I need to get these at some point#If not from the store I'm Amazon ordering it when I have less on my credit card

Love this dude.
Judging by his look, especially the goofy ass cross-gun, I was expecting him to be a either a textbook jrpg coolguy, or an over the top Nis parody of one. But nah, he's actually just a pretty fun, down to earth guy. His english voice helps with the image I think.

La Pucelle Part Six is up, finally
fun fact: the reason it took so long is because the audio drowned me out, so I had to add subtitles. Near as I can tell, the subtitle feature crapped out on me AND won't let me resubmit the file, so I typed up 14 pages for no damn reason THANKS YOUTUBE 🙃
(i really hope it fixes itself, please Lord...)

I have played a handful of them. This includes a number of Fire Emblem Games plus Silent Storm, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Warhammer 40k: Mechanicus, a little bit of Jagged Alliance 2, some Disgaea games, La Pucelle: Ragnarok, and some others.
However, I think my preference trends towards RPGs that have tactical combat but are not "pure" tactical RPGs, like UnderRail, Temple of Elemental Evil, or Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. These games also include things like exploration, significant dialogue options, and other mechanics.
The "How" of it depends on the specific game. For example, in UnderRail I played a stealthy character who relies on scouting the field ahead of time and avoiding detection to lay down traps and then ambush enemies with a crossbow loaded with all kinds of enhanced bolts and tons of perks that boost critical hits. My girlfriend instead played a more typical sniper with a giant gun.
The "Why" is more complicated. Often there's multiple factors that go into a game that attract me to it rather than one single thing. For some of these games, I really like the character building options and gameplay variety. In others I really like the sum of their mechanics on the net (for example, Silent Storm having destructible environments lends itself to a lot of fun and creativity when you get big guns or explosives).
It's hard for me to choose favorites, so even picking one single game to talk about would be difficult. Still, I have written about how UnderRail uses its cool bestiary to make combat varied and interesting before.
I also like this video on WotR.
youtube
As for how to get good at them... that also depends on the game (Fire Emblem is very different from XCOM, obviously) but the good news is that a lot of them generally have easy modes and/or the option to go somewhere else if an area is too much. Wrath of the Righteous in particular has extremely customizable difficulty settings.
Experimenting on easy mode might be a decent way to figure out the appeal of these games and how they work without feeling too bad in the process? For some of these it may also be a good idea to read the manual.
who here plays tactical RPGs? I have three questions
first one, how?
second one, why?
third, can you convince me to play your favorite one
