Nel "Fermo e Lucia", Manzoni aveva fatto della Monaca un'eroina da romanzo gotico, lontana parente del "Monaco" di Lewis. Ma la vita del personaggio storico è ancora più fosca.

Second art livestream: la Monaca di Monza (the nun of Monza), a very well known character in Italian literature and pop culture!

Sister Virginia Maria (born Marianna de Leyva y Marino; December 4, 1575 – January 17, 1650) was an Italian nun. She gave birth to two children fathered by a local aristocrat, and had connived in the murder of another nun in order to cover up the affair. This took place in Monza, in northern Italy, at the beginning of the 17th century. Following this scandal she became widely known as The Nun of Monza. Her life inspired one of the characters in Alessandro Manzoni's novel The Betrothed, which has also been dramatized several times.

Based on historical medieval story, this Italian Nunsploitation movie (la monaca di Monza) from 1969 directed by Eriprando Visconti narrates the story of a nun (Ann Heywood) raped in her convent by a fugitive priest (Antonio Sabato) and then condemned to death by being walled alive !!! by the local clerical head (Hardy Kruger) 

The Italian locandina (insert-sized) poster (most likely used in neighboring Austria as the German title snipe shows) is a superb painting by Renato Casaro.
