The day my husband and I were leaving for DC, a YouTuber I like dropped a video about how the L’Enfant Plaza shopping mall is basically a dead mall, but the thing that struck me were all of the shots of the gorgeous Metro station itself. I took a walk down to see it for myself and wandered through the quasi-dead mall to get there, but it didn’t strike me as dead so much as it was mostly being a giant food court during the week most days.
The nice thing is that they have a staircase that will take you directly back to the Hilton’s lobby, which is a lovely convenience during bad weather and the like.

Sometimes You write Serious Stuff
“It’s all about framing,
it's all about existing bias.”
Humans are bias creatures. To make the must-have general sweeping statement - We are Judge-y people, and We believe we are at the top of the animal chain of smartest creatures ever. You are dead certain though, that the housecat staring at you with is tail tick-tock-ing an idyllic pace thinks otherwise. It's probably going “heh humans and their unrealistic dreams. Now comb my fur and give me a rub before I plonk myself on your keyboard”. You pick up your phone, take a picture of said cat and continue to type.
Of late, you have been radiating motivation, perhaps the way the UV radiation is that much stronger in Australia. It has led you to enrol into a Coursera Brand Management course by the London Business School. Part of its Module 1 included an interesting experiment by Washington Post. Not exactly an unknown experiment of taking the known-artist and sticking them on the streets to busk. But the related reading you are tasked with has - as you exaggerate - its epiphanies.
It is clear to you that the article was meant to showcase the importance of branding. You can have the best product but without the successful branding behind it, you’ll be lost in the other millions of competitors or in this case, famous violinist Joshua Bell was relegated to background unnoticeable noise outside L’Enfant Plaza metro, Washington D.C. A BGM that was only worth $30 bucks. How could that happen? How could the Shark in Tank be better than this virtuoso? (Yes, you add that snarky comment cos you can).
Picture from dailyartmagazine.com (who took it of Hirst’s website)
As the professor on recording confirms for you, it's all about branding – “without context” appreciating anything becomes harder. This gets you recalling all those knowledgeable facts stuffed into you during your schooling days; priming bias, that’s what this is all about. The pricey concert ticket makes you perceive it is going to be amazing. It’s the label you see, the nice price tag that reeks luxury. Then you go, don’t forget selection bias! A concert hall = music appreciators. But a metro station at peak morning hour traffic? You aren’t going to have good business mate, maybe try again in the evening.
So, you get it, to be successful at branding, you need to create the right consumer experience. Layman terms – time, place, occasion. Business terms – value creation, experience, effectiveness, brand purpose etc.
The article itself is more “artsy”, it brings in the views of philosophers. Gist of it, framing matters for us to appreciate beauty. Without the right frame, we would struggle to appreciate it. You can appreciate this idea; without the right framing of ‘needing to prevent thieves from entering your house’, you would not be very appreciative of that locked door when you left your keys behind said locked door. At those times, instead of swearing, you think “it’s time I change that lock into a fingerprint one, pretty hard to forget my fingers”.
Anyhow, here is the thing, humans are biased people. Our brain is biased and that affects our perception of things - our ability to appreciate. So the article may have focussed on whether beauty needs to be framed, your professor is focussed on branding and you…you were simply enjoying the author’s writing. There was no framing of who the author is – you find out at the end he is a Pulitzer winner. But all the same you could admire the writing style and the whole ‘think branding’ was not in the forefront of your mind one teeny bit.
You acknowledge of course, it's all about the framing. You are attempting to do some blogging, writing becomes important. You appreciate it just as those few people stopped to listen to Joshua Bell because they appreciate music, perhaps more than heading to work ╮(╯▽╰)╭ Now, where does this leave you? A very guilty feeling of preferring to blog than study ʅ(´◔౪◔)ʃ
You wrap up this self-reflective piece with a stingy but very “you” opinion. Without the right frame and the right branding, the best of products can still flop. BUT as a consumer, you like your ‘best kept secrets’ restaurants to well stay secret, because when they get branded with a Michelin star, you won’t be able to afford it ┐(‘~`;)┌
Click for the original article because you are dead sure you would have missed out on the main point of the article. (ノ≧ڡ≦)
À bientôt!

Metrorail
The region’s premiere transit system, Metro is of the most recognizable architectures in the nation.
The DC Metro is without a doubt the most recognizable Brutalist structure in the DC region. With over six hundred thousand riders every day, it plays no small part in everything that goes on in the Capitol Area. It also made the list of top 150 architecture in the U.S., the only Brutalist structure to do so. With so much love and notoriety, it’s no small feat the Metro has maintained its signature look through the years. Some stations in particular are worth nothing including L’Enfant plaza, Chinatown, and Dupont Circle.
The original vaulting was developed by Harry Weese, and though variations were made to be more cost-effective, they remain in the spirit of that originally developed. The advantage is using concrete for the majority of the structure has become clear throughout the years: it ages well even if the environment of Metro with infinite sources of dirt and grime, even with the washing, some stains cannot be removed, but concrete is very forgiving when it comes to these, looking good no matter what you throw at it. In spite of this, Metro experimented with painting the concrete in some stations white. The backlash was rapid and merciless, even the critics of Brutalism thought the move was a step backwards. Through the years the original look laid down has been carried through to the present day. Even the most recent addition on the Silver Line have a visual similarity to the original vaulting despite not explicitly including it. The metal awnings and girders do enough to convey an industrial aesthetic that hearkens back to the original Metro stations they riff on.

NaNo Day 03
Michael was lucky enough to find a seat, actually enjoying his time on the metro as he made his transit to the Smithsonian. He’d been to Washington once before, and appreciated the convenience of using the metro to travel throughout the crowded city. The train finally reached L’Enfant Plaza Station, and Michael blended in with the crowds of tourists and families. It was mid afternoon, and anyone at work was still there, but a ripe and nice time for visitors to sightsee. The sun was still high, and the day humid, and just like the last time he had been in the city, wondered why the hell anyone would want to build a city on a former swamp.
The soldier made his way to the Air and Space Museum, and made his way inside the crowded first level. Even before he joined the Air Force he had loved aircraft, and would have loved to spend time walking around the institution and admiring their collection. He checked a small map, waiting for a group of school-aged children to move away from the poster, to find out where exactly the meeting point was. Second level, he learned, and joined the crowd on the escalator up.
His alert blue eyes watched over the balcony above him, and quickly tagged a government bodyguard type. A man in a neutral colored suit leaning on the railing and watching both the lower level around the Spirit of St. Louis and those on the escalator. He probably had seen Michael, but the soldier wasn’t sure. When he reached the summit, he easily saw the massive rocket engines, and pressed towards the exhibit. He wasn’t particularly worried about tradecraft or concealing his position or intentions. If this was a trap, it was a poor place for one with all the onlookers and potential collateral damage.
Michael spotted his contact fairly easily. A black suit flanked by two more black suits, in a city of black suits. Eying the two bodyguards carefully, they let the man pass within their perimeter to talk to their principal.
“Impressive, aren’t they?” the Archivist said, a head full of white hair as he looked up at the towering booster. “The Agency was worried that the Soviets would put a man on the moon before we did, to the point we had plans to sabotage Baikonur Cosmodrome, where the Soviets were launching from.”
“Be a ballsy plan, easy to blow back on the Agency,” Michael stated, leaning on the railing near the exhibit.
“We were going to stir up some problems in what now is Chechnya,” the Archivist smiled slyly. “Couple of years before it actually happened. We never ended up going through with it, but isn’t it fun to think about?” he asked.
“Kind of like things like Northwoods, invading Cuba,” Michael observed.
“That would have gone nuclear,” the Archivist stated definitively. “Let’s test your knowledge, Mister Haghn,” he said, coming off the railing and walking away from the exhibit. Michael, and the three he’d pegged for guards, followed him. “Do you remember the USS Michael Murphy incident?”
Michael thought for a couple of seconds, “horn of Africa, right? Pirates took over a small ship and tried to use a bunch of small boats packed with explosives to blow up the Murphy. We were close to spinning up for it, but we never got the call,” he remembered, “how’d I do?”
“Good enough. Here’s what you don’t know,” the Archivist said, “after the attack, we tracked the pirate mothership back to their camp. We inserted a SEAL team, and they set up surveillance on the camp. Pretty large setup, hundred pirates or so, chances of pulling off a land assault slim,” the man said, pulling a phone from his coat pocket. He offered it to Michael, the screen showing pictures of the camp.
“Very hard target,” Michael agreed, swiping through the pictures. A mix of images from the surface level, and overheads from drone overflights. “Women and children here, too,” he noted as he looked over the pictures.
“After a bit of surveillance, we determined that the women and children left town for but an hour window, but always varied. Because of this, we could not get authorization to roll in aircraft to glass the place,” the doctor said as they walked to the Planetarium. “When was the last time you flew commercial?” he asked the soldier.
He had to think deeply about that one, an odd deflection from the flow of conversation, “deploying to Sweden,” he remarked. “Break up a plot to attack one of their nuclear reactors.”
“Imagine, if you will, an aircraft with the fuel economy of a commercial airliner, and the hauling capacity of a B-52,” the Archivist offered. “That can loiter on station and unleash a bomber’s worth of payload and return unmolested.”
“Sounds too good to be true,” Michael stated simply. “But an asset like that would be a game changer,” he responded.
“It is,” the CIA man promised. “We call the flagship Prometheus. It’s a heavily modified 747, the cargo area cleared out, sensor suite installed in the nose. She can loiter for an ungodly amount of time with aerial refueling, and nobody looks twice at it. We’ve flown her out of commercial airports and not a person has sensed anything off about it. We deployed it to the Indian Ocean, and it loitered on station for a little over forty-eight hours. When the SEALs reported that the women and children had left to gather water and food, they started marking targets for the aircraft. If you swipe a bit further, you’ll see before and after images.”
Michael found a spot on a wall and came to a stop, cycling through the images. They turned from surveillance, to images of destruction. The entire village and docks flattened, almost to the hut.
“We later confirmed eighty-nine EKIA, twenty plus missing. Pulled tons of weapons from the wreckage, and an arms dealer showed up while the SEALs were extracting. Rolled him up, and he outed the pirates which gave the strike further credibility.”
Michael nodded, passing the phone back to the man. “So, when you got fancy toys like that, what do you need a black operator like me for?” he asked curiously.
“Because two days ago, the aircraft was shot down over Georgia in Eurasia,” the Archivist said darkly. “We’ve made sure nobody goes looking for it, but there’s still quite a bit of sensitive gear onboard that survived the crash. We can’t exactly send in special forces, or have a drone flatten the site. We’re right on Russia’s doorstep, you know.”
Michael put the pieces together fairly quickly, “do I at least get supplies and a location?” he asked.
“Mister Haghn, you get a choice,” the Archivist promised, “you don’t have to do this. If you do, I can promise that your name will be cleared. But I cannot stress how dangerous this mission will be. If you are captured or killed, nobody is coming for you.”
“Sir, do you know who my last posting was with?” Michael asked with a raised eyebrow.
The Archivist shook his head and sighed, he reached into his jacket again and produced a manilla folder. “This has everything you need, keep the phone too,” he told the soldier. “There’s a number built in, send it a text with equipment that you need. We’ll have someone procure what you need to the best of our ability and stash it in a dead drop for you.”
Michael Haghn stared at the manilla envelope for a moment, before he took it. “Guess I’m operational again,” he said to himself.
“You’ve got a red eye booked for tonight out of Dulles,” the Archivist told him. “Good luck,” he said finally, before he pulled away from the Planetarium and took his three guards with him.
