9, 19, 29 and 39 from the fifty rook questions if you’re takin em!
9) What is Rook like on the battlefield?
Rio is a whirlwind, crackling with lightning and fire and exhilarated laughter (most of the time). Candy is the opposite -- silent, swift, and deadly. Korbl is slower, but not slow. His sword is as tall as he is, wielded with surprising precision. Irri always has the high ground, keeping track of positioning and threats to his allies, calling directions to someone if someone else is in trouble. Whit is a sword-and-board soldier, taking hits and dealing them right back. Sticks close to an ally -- usually Korbl -- and guards their back. Kyr tends to deal damage from a distance. She prefers her staff, but if someone gets close, she knows damn well how to stab through a barrier, and she's very familiar with all the best places to stab someone. Keeps an eye on exits and hiding spots -- if a migraine hits mid-battle, she needs somewhere to duck away and take her quick-cure (which she'll pay for later, but it's better than getting dead because she couldn't see straight).
19) (i got beef with gary chapman so i'll modify this one to) How does Rook love? What kind of love do they respond best to?
Rio seeks out time and conversation with the people they like. They'll make smallish gestures (such as, in Lucanis's case, brewing a pot of coffee (and learning from him how to brew it better) or calming Spite to get him some rest) once they learn what the other person likes and needs. They really like it when someone notices these things and offers physical affection in return. (Lucanis getting them up against a wall had them... Well. It had them.) Candy just...hangs around. Usually in sight. Usually. Catlike in her preference for, for lack of a better term, parallel play. Or just parallel chilling. She likes it best when the person she loves occasionally asks for her input or assistance, but not too much. (Loves watching Davrin train Assan; loves giving her advice when he asks.) Korbl listens. He pays attention. He learns about people. He extrapolates from what he learns. And he acts on what he extrapolates. (This is, incidentally, also how Korbl hates, but that's not what was asked.) Someone he likes will never be aware that they revealed to him their favorite food, and then they'll find it waiting for them, freshly prepared, after a long, hard day. Or they'll find him waiting for them somewhere they frequent, and his small smile will tell them that he was expecting them. (He likes it when people learn about him in return. Neve's deductive mind was perfect for this. He also likes when people notice his strengths and ask for his help. Neve's cases were perfect for this.) Irri brings you along, and he goes along with you. Always up for a jaunt or even a journey with people he loves, from grocery shopping to a hunt for an enemy to a long hike to a weeks- or months-long trip. He'll invite his loved ones along if he needs to go somewhere, and he'll offer to go with someone if he thinks they need a buddy or just someone along for the ride. Very valuable bonus points if he learns something on the trip, extra points if his loved one takes the time to teach him. Or if said loved one takes the time to learn something from him. (And Emmrich was always glad for the company, and he was all too eager to teach and to learn.) Whit Looks Respectfully. They also make an effort to do the little things. Helping. Bringing someone food if they're working late. Fetching a tool or material someone needs, standing by in case they need another thing or need Whit's help with something. Besides that, they'll put themself between their loved one and any perceived threat -- training kicks in, makes them protective. And while they're not good with words, they'll offer what they can, trying not to be clumsy. (Taash didn't need the protecting, noticed the Respectful Looks, appreciated the helping, and, as they struggled with their gender, knew they'd be okay when Whit looked them in the eyes and said steadily, "I'm here for you. Whoever you decide you are.") Kyr often doesn't realize how much she loves until she's in too deep to get out. She teases. Sneaks up behind someone and pokes them in the side, makes gentle fun of them, seeks them out to tell jokes. By the time she gets to playful booping of the nose, she's too far gone. (Likes when someone matches her fun level, but loves someone who understands that Kyr always means well with it. Bellara got the gist of that eventually, and now she'll tease back sometimes. It's the nicest thing when she does that and Kyr grins all big and bright.)
29) Any vices?
Rio is a thrill-seeker, sometimes (often) to their own detriment. They're...working on getting better at the "being aware of consequences" thing, after spending most of their life as a "consequences are a problem for Future Rio" kind of person. Candy harbors a vindictive streak and is known to indulge in schadenfreude...rather a lot. (She also has a weakness for good beer. Sometimes also bad beer.) Korbl likes sex. Shrug. (Korbl likes sex a lot.) (He doesn't usually let it distract him. Usually.) Irri was introduced to elfroot not long after joining the Veil Jumpers. Now it's a staple. Whit's first few years with the Wardens were...kinda boring. They passed the time (and got to know the others) with dice games. And betting on dice games. And betting on sparring matches. And betting on who the First Warden would be mad at today. And -- you know what, let's just say gambling. Kyr has to be very careful with her painkillers. She got on some shitty ones when she was younger and got addicted. She uses the quick-cure she does, despite there being ones with fewer aftereffects, to ward her off using it too much.
39) What is their room at the Lighthouse like?
Rio: Cozy. Decorated. Very near the music room. Lots of pillows and blankets. Not so much bed. Candy: Spare (think cot, nightstand, wash basin, small mirror, not much else), but with trinkets and trophies and one (1) nice, warm, cozy blanket. Korbl: Dim, curtained. Sound from the outside is muffled to a pleasant hum. Peaceful. Unless he has a bedmate. Irri: Messy! Strewn with clothes, supplies, half-read books, and at least a few rocks that he thought looked cool. He has a desk, too, and it's as cluttered as the rest of the room. (He's probably the one with the fishtank wall.) Whit: A soldier's room. Makeshift mannequin to hang their armor when it's not in use, stand to hold sword and shield, bed, foot locker with mementos and valuables. A small bookcase, mostly holding informational texts. A desk, smaller and much neater than Irri's. A punching bag hanging from the ceiling. Kyr: Small but satisfactory. Easy to make it dark when she has a migraine. Bed's cozier than almost any she's slept in before, though. She likes that a lot. Cabinet and wash basin for her medicines. The nightstand has a small, empty sconce that holds a mage-light when Kyr's in the room and doesn't need complete darkness

The Murder of Rooks
The six of them got their collective nickname all at the same time: as Varric was exiting a tavern into a rainy street, he saw his group of seconds-in-command tucked together, all with their dark cloaks pulled close and hoods up to protect from the weather. He laughed and said, "You all look like a group of disgruntled black birds."
(am no artist and don't got screenshots, so picrews and info beneath the cut!)
Sario "Rio" Laidir (they/them): Spellblade Lord of Fortune.
Rio was born to a human woman and a Dalish man in a pirate town on the coast of Rivain. The clan their father belongs to is one of the few mostly-stationary ones -- they protect an archive of knowledge in an ancient glassy tower in the town. Some of them still itch to move, however -- and those are the ones that become the town's pirates -- and defenders. Rio's mother was part of the crew the hahren captained, and they spent half their childhood on the sea. Captain ("Admiral") Isabela stopped at the port on her way north around 9:42 Dragon, and (with their parents' knowledge and reluctant but fond blessing) Sario hopped aboard her ship, joining her as one of the Lords of Fortune. The rest is infamy.
(Likes shiny things. Really likes shiny things. And despite everything, Rio thinks Lucanis shines like a sun.)
Candiano "Candy" de Riva (she/her): Duelist Antivan Crow.
Candy was the rare -- and extremely illegitimate -- result of a union between an elf and a dwarf. The Crows, as Crows do, bought her took her in when she was young, and she was trained raised from that young age to be a deadly operative. There's not much love lost between her and her former "family." When the Antaam invaded Treviso, Candy's partner (take whichever meaning you will; most of them apply) Allegria was killed. It made Candy more reckless, and it may have had a hand in her decision to liberate Antaam hostages at the expense of a larger Crow operation. She wasn't sad to leave.
(Still. She and Davrin learn together from Assan that in a world of darkness, one must look for the light. One must be the light and find the light in others.)
Korvinian "Korbl" Ingellvar (he/him); Slayer Mourn Watcher
An infant dwarf was decidedly low on whatever list of expectations Mourn Watcher Konstanze Ingellvar had when she went out to perform her routine rituals in the Necropolis, but there it was. She took the child in, taught the ways of the Watchers as she parented, and her adoptee grew up among graves, bones, and spirits. Stanze knew from almost the start that her child would grow up to be a patient, thoughtful, respectful, and strong man -- despite the fact that the shortsighted would perceive him as a woman, and despite his youthful dreams of becoming one of the famed Nevarran dragonslayers. Luckily for him, his adoptive mother can be aptly described as "juuust this side of mad scientist," so she was happy to help him present how he wished to.
(Patient and thoughtful were qualities mirrored in Neve Gallus, and before long, the two of them were gravitating toward each other for more than just that.)
Irhim "Irri" Aldwir (he/him), Veil Ranger
The Veil Jumpers found the new Tal-Vashoth after he escaped from his platoon just outside Arlathan Forest. Once he'd convinced them he was no threat -- and once he'd been given some water -- he explained himself. He was an Ashaad of the garrison of Antaam that were held in reserve to march on Tevinter cities, but the forest just to their east reawakened something in him -- a curiosity and fascination with magic that he'd had to tamp down even before he was assigned to the Antaam. The pull of it became irresistible, and he ran. The Veil Jumpers, always in need of skilled scouts and fighters, eventually accepted him into their cohort, and he adopted the name Irhim -- loosely translated as "I am become" -- for the new self he found among the trees and ancient magic.
(The fascination extends to most kinds of magic -- especially Emmrich's gentle form of necromancy. It helps that Irri finds himself charmed by the mage himself too.)
Whitaker “Whit” Thorne (they/them), Grey Warden Champion
A Free Marcher by birth, Whit remembers well the day their little sister’s magic manifested — too soon after the fall of the Kirkwall Circle, and too close to the city itself, for the people in their village to react with anything but fear. They wanted no mages there, and they wanted no templars coming to collect mages, either. The Thornes were run out of town, at the cost of Whit’s father’s life. Their mother died of illness as a refugee on Tevinter’s borders, and at all of seventeen years old, Whit was not strong enough to protect their sister from the squad of Templars who found them not long after. It was sheer luck — and a suspicion of templars — that meant a Grey Warden found them in time to call the right of conscription to save Whit’s life. He managed to make the templars back off, and he did his best to comfort Whit and help them bury their sister. Whit did end up going with him and undergoing the Joining, and life as a Warden was kinder to them, somehow. But they weren’t about to let anyone else die if they could help it.
(And maybe being semi-exiled turned out okay, since it led them to meet a certain Lord of Fortune whose fire breath had Whit sweating for more than one reason.)
Kyrie “Kyr” Mercar (she/her), Shadow Dragon Evoker
Kyr has no memory of parents beyond a vague, early notion. She remembers only running with her fellow orphans and urchins, including her older sister, through Minrathous streets. Her magic was used to create distractions, get away from angry shop owners from whom their cabal stole, and ward off civilians who got pissed at a group of dirty kids for daring to exist in public. It’s difficult to say whether Kyr found the Shadow Dragons or vice versa — but what’s certain is that they nurtured the righteous anger in her and shaped her into something more directed and powerful than a kid who spat sparks. (Kinda bit them in the ass when she fucked up an entire slaver ring on her own, but she was starting to get restless in the small-time stuff anyway.)
(Then it’s suddenly very extremely big-time stuff, and the cynicism Kyr developed on the streets is challenged and softened by a bright-eyed and brilliant Veil Jumper.)
(bonus fact: the tinted glasses are because i unfortunately gave her the Migraine Haver trait)

3, 4, 5, 6, 7 for your Rooks, from the 50 Rook Questions! :D
3) What was Rook’s life before their faction?
Rio: Grew up in a coastal city in Rivain, home to one of the few stationary Dalish clans. Some of them still have the urge to travel, though, so those are the ones that become pirates. Rio spent a good chunk of their childhood and young adulthood on the sea. Candy: ...Life before the Crows? Are you fucking joking? Korbl: ...Life before the Watch? You're definitely joking. Irri: The Qun. Pressing down his fascination with magic and the arcane and ancient to avoid the eye of the Ben-Hassrath. Whit: Village life in the Free Marches. Happy, until the Kirkwall Circle fell and then their little sister's magic manifested not long after. Then, on the run for a few months, until Whit was the only one left. Kyr: A rat on the streets of Minrathous, following her older sister and their friends in the fight to survive and maybe just maybe stick it to the highborn fuckers who try to crush them under a boot heel.
4) Which faction did they join, and why? How long has it been?
Rio: Look, when your parents have already done everything and had every adventure, you jump at the chance for something they haven't done. Especially if it's Isabela taking a shine to you and inviting you to join her crew. It's been ten or so years now, and Rio's still gleefully chasing gold and glory as a Lord of Fortune. (Semi-exile aside.) Candy: Why? Because someone paid, and someone else gave her up. It's been her whole life, or near enough to not matter. Korbl: He was found as an infant in the Necropolis. He's wondered why, of course. Kept him up more than one night at a time, the why of it. But Konstanze was patient and loving and even helped him to search for answers if the not knowing became too much for him. Irri: The Veil Jumpers were the ones that found him, after he deserted his garrison and made for Arlathan. They had the same curiosity, the same hunger for knowledge, that he did. It's been...seven years? Eight? ...Time gets weird when you're this near the Fade. Whit: A Warden saved them from the templars that killed their sister -- by invoking the right of conscription. So far from home, with no one and nothing left to them, it seemed...the best option, right then. Whit's been part of the Wardens for almost half their life now, and they've been a true Warden themself for almost as long. Kyr: Shadow Dragons found her when they were hunting the same Venatori that were hunting her. She'd gotten just a little too bold at punching up. Luckily, that boldness was exactly what the Shadow Dragons needed seven years ago. It's also exactly what they didn't need when she got bold again and fucked up an entire slaver ring on her own. (Okay, Varric helped.)
5) What was life like for Rook before joining the Veilguard?
Rio was, of course, treasure-hunting. Always after the shiny things, that one, Isabela would say fondly. Bastard after her own heart. Candy chafed against the Crows, who expected her loyalty even after -- hell, because of -- the brutal and callous ways they trained her. When Treviso fell to the Antaam, she cherished a small flame of grim glee that the Crows were finally getting some of their shit thrown back at them. Korbl kept his refuge in the graves, the rituals, the routines. His life was usually peaceful -- broken only occasionally by an experiment of Stanze's going brilliantly wrong. Irri chased legends and artifacts in Arlathan, more joyful than he'd ever been in his life -- until the balance started tipping again. Whit was a Warden, part of a small garrison, and researched in Warden history for combating the new, frightening ways the Blight was being used in the south. Kyr ran in the shadows as she always had, but with more purpose now. Still had an incurably rebellious streak, though.
6) What was the reason that brought Rook to Minrathous?
They all had pretty much the same reasons: to save the world, to fuck over Venatori, because Varric asked. But Kyr had an extra reason: to find her sister. So the others have that reason too. (Kyr doesn't find her, not that time. Other things to do. But she goes a bit further afield in Minrathous than Dock Town. Later. When there's time and space for it. As soon as there's time and space for it.)
7) Why does Rook agree to join the Veilguard?
All six of them joined Varric, one by one. Rio was a loan -- an eager one -- from Isabela to her old friend, and conveniently timed to get them away from Rivain and its nobles. Candy took her only chance to break free of the Crows. Korbl was reluctant to leave the Necropolis, but Varric told stories of the outside world that tempted him -- especially the ones about dragonslaying. Irri was ever curious, ever searching for more, and in Arlathan, he was more sensitive than ever to how tenuous the balance of the world was. Whit may be just one Grey Warden, but just one Grey Warden can, after all, save the fucking world, if pressed. And Kyr, after her time in the Shadow Dragons, wanted better for Minrathous -- for the world -- than the fucking Venatori would give it.

13, 14, 16 for the Rook questionnaire :D
13) What are their thoughts on killing? Is it a necessary evil or do they enjoy it?
Rio: The answer varies. Not just by who they're killing, but also by who's asking. People they're not familiar with will get a non-answer about making the hard choices. People they know better -- people who have seen them kill -- know that yes, there are some kills that Rio enjoys. (Calivan. Cutter. The Dragon King. Hezenkoss. To name a few.) Candy: Neither. It's a job. It's the only job she's ever had. Korbl: Again, neither. He sees it as a sort of release. From the vices and wrongs of this life to the peace of death. It's very Mourn Watch of him. Irri: He does not enjoy killing. He likes it the least of any of them. Whit: Not so much enjoyment as a grim satisfaction at a fight well fought and a job well done. Kyr: Like Rio, it varies, but it's a more consistent variance. For example, Venatori just fucking deserve to get incinerated.
14) What hobbies does your Rook have?
Rio: Music! Running with the Lords introduced them to a lot of fancier stuff in life, and they developed a keen love for opera. Nobody expects the spellblade to be a classically trained vocalist. Just another way Rio keeps people on their toes. Candy: She was the undisputed roof-racing champion of Treviso pre-occupation. Korbl: ...Sex. Doesn't mind a bit of climbing or Necropolis-navigating, either. (Necropolis-navigating should be a sport.) Irri: History. More accurately, other perspectives on history. A lot of his education on the rest of the world's history was "and this is why the Qun is needed." Has at least minor beef with Genitivi. Whit: Horseback riding. Kyr: Surprisingly (for a fire mage), swimming.
16) Do they have a favorite creature in Thedas?
Rio: Dragons! And dragon-related creatures like wyverns. Will gladly learn anything Taash has to teach about them. Candy: ...She's developed a fondness for griffons. Can't say why. Korbl: Ravens. He appreciates their intelligence. Irri: He's come to like halla a lot since settling in Arlathan. Whit: Horse girl. Kyr: Wolves.

Rook asks: 1, 2, 12, 40, 44, 48
1) How old is Rook?
Rio: Close to thirty, but not quite over that cusp yet. 28-29. Candy: Just past thirty. She probably celebrated her thirtieth on the hunt for Solas. Korbl: Late twenties like Rio. Irri: Early thirties. He escaped the Antaam at about 24 or 25. Whit: Despite every indication of personality between the six of them, Whit’s the youngest at about 26 or 27. Kyr: Closer to thirty than Rio, still not quite there.
2) How did Rook get the nickname? What do they think of it?
They all got the nickname at once, when Varric laughed and said that the group of them, huddled together in the rain, cloaked and hooded, looked like “a bunch of disgruntled black birds.” They all like it well enough, though it gets a little confusing to all be called the same name.
12) Does Rook have any family? Do they keep in touch?
Rio: Yep! Mum and Babae are back home in Rivain. Rio sends letters less frequently now, since joining Varric, but they told Mum and Bae that would likely happen, and they try to keep their parents updated without telling secrets or putting them in danger. Gonna be a fun day when Rio shows back up on the doorstep with an assassin in tow like “meet my boyfriend!” Candy: House de Riva, much to her chagrin. Their upbringing was brutal, but Candy made cautious connections where she could, including with Viago. When he was made Talon, it soured their relationship a bit, and when he effectively banished her (and kept addressing her like she was a stupid little sister), she was hurt and furious. It’ll take some doing (on his part) for him to be her family again. Korbl: He’s never found his birth family, but Konstanze Ingellvar adopted him after she found him, and she raised him as best a Mourn Watcher just this side of “mad scientist” could. (He sends letters too, but it’s from Myrna and Vorgoth that she hears her boy’s been back to the Necropolis, and his ma is there to exclaim and hug him when he’s there next.) Irri: Not that he knows of. Growing up under the Qun, you had your Tamassran and your group-mates, and then when he was twelve, he was assigned to the Antaam, and he had very little contact with anyone he’d grown up with thereafter. So no. No family. Whit: Not anymore. Pa who got killed as they escaped their hometown, dead mum, murdered mage sister. The Wardens are a substitute, but not a replacement. Kyr: Her older sister Thais. They got into the Shadow Dragons together, but they had different skillsets and so saw each other less and less frequently as they were assigned to different jobs. They keep in contact as much as they’re able, but Thais was still needed in Minrathous when Kyr joined Varric. After Solas’s ritual, Kyr is anxious to locate Thais and know she’s okay.
40) Describe Rook’s bed:
Rio: What bed? If it’s there at all, it’s somewhere beneath the mess of blankets and pillows. Definitely no bedframe there. Candy: Plain and not too soft, but it’s what she’s used to. She does have one big, warm, cozy blanket though. She’s always wanted one of those. Korbl: Fancier than almost any of the others. Black wood frame, soft sheets, fluffy pillows, excellent blankets. The bed’s not hard, but it’s not soft, either. If it’s too soft, it gets hard to have sex there. Irri: Irri’s is less a bed than a bedroll. It’s what he’s used to, both as Antaam and as a Veil Jumper. This one is softer and warmer than either of those were, though. Whit: Soldier’s cot. Simple frame. Always made in the morning. The blanket changed a few weeks into living in the Lighthouse. It’s now a multicolored weave of wool — exactly like Whit’s memory of the one their mother wove for them of leftover wool from other work when Whit was a child. Kyr: Softer than any she’s slept in before. Down pillows, with a matching comforter. Nothing hard, nothing that exacerbates any pain. She would — and does — just gladly sink (and I mean sink) into it at the end of the day.
44) What is Rook really good at?
Rio: Throwing people — especially enemies — off their guard. Candy: Killing. (Also drinking.) Korbl: Listening. (And sex.) Irri: Learning. Whit: Soldiering. Protecting. Kyr: Arson!
48) A color, flower, animal, and weather to describe Rook:
Rio: Pale, bright blue; a clear sky, complete with brilliant sun. Butterfly weed. Mongoose. Sun after rain, when the smell lingers in the air. Candy: Purple so dark that it takes a good hard look to realize it’s not black. Bull thistle. Peregrine falcon. Strident wind blowing thick clouds across the sky. Korbl: Phthalo green. Red carnation. Wolverine. Deeply overcast, with a sultry but not overbearing humidity that promises a storm. Irri: Pale gold, like sunlight dappled by yellow autumn leaves. Compass plant. Shrike. Sunshower. Whit: Deep slate blue. Black-eyed Susan. Lynx. Thunderstorm. Kyr: Pale grey, with a hint of Veil green in there and the subtlest bit of golden sheen. Gladiolus. Asp. The lightning strike that ignites a dry tree.

From the new Rook questionnaire: 1, 6, 14, 17, 25
1) Where in Thedas is your Rook from?
Rio: Rivain! But also not — they’re from a semi-independent port town led by a rare stationary Dalish clan that guards an archive of knowledge inside a crystalline tower. (go poke @gwynbleiddyn about Dhavan’an if you want more info.) Candy: She doesn’t know where exactly she was born; she only has hazy memories of the place. Treviso is the home she knows. Korbl: The Necropolis. Konstanze was in charge of a small section of her own, and she raised him there, but as he got older, he explored more. Irri: Where he was born? Par Vollen. Where he considers home? Arlathan Forest. Whit: A village outside Kirkwall. Kyr: Minrathous; one of the decidedly lower districts.
6) What companion is Rook platonically close with?
Rio: Taash! Lords of Fortune stick together. For gold, glory, and gender! (And dragons!) Candy: At first? No one. Eventually, to her initial chagrin? Lucanis. He was a spoiled princeling, she thought. But then he was as scared for Treviso as she was, and he wasn’t the haughty bastard she expected. Korbl: He and Emmrich get each other, in the way that only fellow Mourn Watchers can. (Harding too — they’re both dwarves with weird relationships to the Stone.) Irri: He and Bellara can talk a mile a minute at each other, and no one will catch a single word, but they’ll understand each other perfectly and then blow something up. (Accidentally.) Whit: Wardens get each other. Whit and Davrin have similar views on life besides. Kyr: She finds a fellow in Neve — fighting for the little guy in Minrathous by sticking it to the big guy.
17) Do they enjoy life as an adventurer?
Rio: Yeah! They love adventure! Big, world-shattering plots and efforts to foil them aside. Candy: It’s miles better than being a Crow who was in the dark in occupied Treviso. Korbl: He does. He was worried at first that it would feel too strange to be outside the Necropolis, but he reminded himself of his childhood dreams of being a Nevarran dragonslayer. Irri: Gods, yes. Absolutely. He’s flourishing in the freedom to travel and do things. Whit: Reminded them at first of the first time they left their home — chased out by an angry mob who wanted to murder Whit’s sister and killed their father instead. Better now, but still not where they’d prefer to be, with the regularity of the Warden day-to-day. Kyr: She misses Minrathous sometimes. But she’s having a goddamned effect out here that she only ever had before when she fucked up that slaver ring.
25) What specialization (added by me: for another class) best represents your Rook? (because otherwise it would just be their specializations)
Rio: Saboteur. Explosions!! Candy: Reaper. High-risk, high-reward. Korbl: Death Caller. Duh. Irri: Evoker. He’s almost envious of mages’ innate connection to the world and its elements. Whit: Spellblade. Hitting hard and keeping allies on their feet besides. Kyr: Saboteur as well. As Rio said, explosions.

6, 26 and 46 from the fifty (more) rook qs if you’re doing them!
6) Describe Rook through the eyes of their LI(s).
Lucanis, on Rio: “They are utterly baffling. I thought perhaps it was the fact I had such different experiences from any normal person, but I have seen more of the world beyond the Crows now, and I can confirm: Rio is an oddity of the first water, and not only because of their kindness and optimism.” Davrin, on Candy: “Crystallized ginger. Sweet at first, draws you in, and then you bite down, and it’s like an explosion in your mouth. Then, once you get used to it, it’s sweet again, in a different way. That’s the kind of Candy she is. She and Assan have given me a new taste for ginger; I’ll tell you that.” Neve on Korbl: “I swear, something about growing up in the Necropolis makes people have the most endearing weirdnesses. Emmrich’s whole self aside, Korbl has this quietude about him that combines very strangely with a lot of other parts of his personality. I barely heard him speak at all for the first few days in the Lighthouse, and then the first time I spoke with him one-on-one, he flirted with me so eloquently that I almost didn’t have an answer. Almost. He leaves notes around that he pretends aloud aren’t for anyone in particular, but he knows the wisps will bring them to me. He makes it a game, almost. Something he knows I can't resist putting my mind to." Emmrich on Irri: “A man of deep conviction and some contradiction. Delightfully charming, of course. At first, he reminded me of Manfred -- always curious, always eager and friendly. It was only after I first saw him confront Antaam that I understood how he has had to struggle for his happiness and curiosity. On a lighter note, it vexed me slightly at first how far I had to look up to make eye contact with him, even in polite conversation. Now I am, shall we say, much more appreciative of his size." Taash on Whit: "Tough. Hot. Helped me with, you know, gender stuff. Helped me with a lot of stuff. Honest. Smart too. Can't say I'm too interested in the blight, but they know as much about it as I know about dragons. And they make this cute little noise when I push 'em against a wall." Bellara on Kyr: "Well, I mean, first time I saw her, in that Veil bubble, I thought, well, wow. She was doing this thing, where she tosses her hair out of her face after a fight, and then she asked me if I was Bellara -- obviously I am -- and she smiled and said that my knight in mage armor had arrived. I think I laughed. I hope I did. She's made me laugh a lot since then. Made me blush a lot too."
26) What does Rook tell Emmrich, when he asks them about funerary rite preferences?
Rio grew up in a pirate town. Sea burial's always been ideal for them -- it'll be peaceful down there, and the fish will have somewhere to nest. Candy has been surrounded by death since childhood. She thinks the Necropolis might surround her with a...more peaceful sort of death. Korbl says Necropolis. Obviously. Irri gets curious about the Necropolis. He likes what he's seen of the place so far. Whit has genuine reasons to want to be cremated. Keeping the taint in their body from touching anyone else after they die, for example. But that's generally a lesser chance than just dying on the Calling eventually. Kyr does say cremation. She's Tevinter, and she's an evoker. She's had plenty of fire around since she was a child. Having fire sweep around her to carry her away after she's gone...it feels right.
46) What does Rook think of being the leader of the Veilguard?
Thankfully, the duty's more even between the six of them. More a council than a single leader. They're all of the opinion that "thank FUCK I don't have to do this on my own; can you IMAGINE how badly we'd be fucked if it were just me"
