Almost done with finals, but I really, really needed to rant.
I know this is a problem with Madoka Magica's purposeful mishandling of its male characters (WHICH I WILL TALK ABOUT LATER), but the way Kyosuke, a literal fucking child, is demonized by both canon and the fandom is beyond sickening.
He was in the hospital for most of his life. He was told in his face that he would never live a normal life by doctors. Those around him only loved him for superficial reason. May I also add that he is, at most, fucking 14? And ya'll treat him worse than those two assholes on the metro?
I am not calling Kyosuke Kamijou a saint, but you have to take his circumstances into account. Heck, the fact that he is not emotionally there at all for anyone as soon as he is healed is an immediate red flag for his safety; yes, he is healed physically, but he still has the trauma to deal with, and I am forever mad that this has never been addressed because, of, oh, he is a dude, and all dudes are like that- gtfo of here with this disgusting take. The portrayal of a symptom of his trauma as HIS FAULT is...ughhhhhh....
Adding on to him "focusing on his violin career"- again, he is 14, and he should be focusing on school, his friends, his life, but, no; he still has doctors up his ass trying to figure out how he was healed so fucking quick and is back to him playing the violin. Has Sayaka ever asked him anything about his day after he was discharged? Has she ever seen him as anything but a violinist?
Was Hitomi the first person ever to see him as an actual person outside the work that his parents have shoved him to?
Kyosuke was done so fucking dirty, and it is one symptom of many in regards to Madoka Magica's inability to strive forwards with its writing. To say that all men are incompetent, they're all emotionless husks, and all girls are required to do the jobs is misogynistic in of itself; it boosts misogyny rather than tackling it head-on. It's literally no different than all these sitcoms where dudes are free to act all childish while their wives are their second moms. This take not only opens the floodgates for TERFs, but also boosts the dehumanization of men of color, which is just heartbreaking especially in the current circumstances of me writing this.
Justice for my kid 2024 and, ffs, study some actual gender sciences Madoka Magica team, because I am tired.

ik this post is about atla but i hope you don't mind if a provide another example, though this one involves two girls and a guy.
in puella magi madoka magica, one of the main characters, sayaka miki, has a crush on her childhood friend, kyosuke kamijou, who's a violin prodigy who got in an accident and lost his ability to play the violin. so sayaka makes a wish to heal his hand so he can play violin again.
her friend, hitomi shizuki, also has a crush on kyosuke. she's also been sayaka's friend since childhood. she talks to sayaka about this and gives her one day to confess her feelings to kyosuke. she outright states that she respects sayaka's feelings for kyosuke, that's why she wants to give her a day (sayaka is going through Some Shit at this time which she has no way of knowing). hitomi ends up confessing after sayaka doesn't and she and kyosuke become a couple.
and lets look at kyosuke for a second. you really can't say much about him other than "he plays violin and he's sayaka's childhood friend". he's also just... not a good friend love triangle aside. he's supposed to be sayaka's childhood friend but after he got discharged from the hospital he doesn't even bother to say a simple "hi" to her at school when she put in all the effort to visit him in the hospital every day and make him happy. and he STILL acts like an ungrateful ass about it.
and yet, guess who gets the most hate in the fandom? that's right, sayaka and hitomi. sayaka is hated for "wasting her wish on a boy" and her entire character arc is reduced to "girl got sad because boy didn't like her back" when if you watch the show you'll know it SO MUCH more than that. hitomi gets hate for being a bad friend and gets treated like a villain for the crime of having a crush on a boy. like maybe she should've given sayaka more time but that doesn't excuse the villainization she gets in the fandom (i'm ashamed to admit i was one of those people who hated hitomi. but i was a teenager back then, watching the show again as an adult gave me a new perspective).
lets not forget, pmmm is a show centering around girls. all five of the mcs are girls, the show centers on magical girls, kyosuke is the only boy who's semi relevant and he's forgotten after sayaka's character arc is done. and yet he doesn't get the amount of demonization hitomi and sayaka get. its like you said, even in fandoms of media centered on female characters or "feminist" spaces you can still find misogyny.
something that i’ve noticed when it comes to love triangles - whether canon or born entirely out of fanon - is that the fandom will always berate the girl in love triangles involving her and two other guys for making the “wrong choice” (i.e. not selecting the fandom favourite or the one that fandom has dubbed most suitable for her). however, in love triangles involving a guy and two girls, the guy is almost always exemplified and excused for their “wrong choice.” instead, the misogyny is directed towards one of the girls in the love triangle - particularly the canon love interest that interferes with the fandom’s favourite ship.
take the atla fandom as an example. katara is primarily blamed for choosing the “12 year old prebuscent boy” instead of the “hot angsty prince with a cool scar,” despite the fact that zuko had kissed mai several months before katara had kissed aang (his coronation and the finale of atla take place within the span of a couple of months). on the flip side, zuko is never indicted by fandom for choosing the “wrong girl.” rather, fandom will go through great lengths to blame mai for every problem that zuko has had, accusing her of holding him back from reaching his true potential as the firelord.
fandoms are incredibly misogynistic, even the ones claiming to be feminist spaces who prioritize female characters. both katara and mai experience the wrath of fandom misogyny as a result of a decade old ship war primarily constructed by fandom, all for the simple crime of not choosing the “correct” option or getting in the way of the “correct” option. free them, and every fictional female who has been scorned by fandom for not living up to their preferences.

One of the things I am absolutely delighted to write about is the truly disastrous relationship between (Bad Timeline) Sayaka and Kyosuke. I cannot stress how much of a mess they are.
We've got Kyosuke "my hand was magically healed, this is a sign that I should devote my life to the violin" Kamijou who has never had a romantic feeling in his life and is going on tour constantly.
We've got Sayaka "Hero of Justice" Miki (now Kamijou) who feels that it is up to her to be the perfect Magical Girl AND the perfect wife. Who has never once had feelings for anyone besides Kyosuke and will fight you to prove it.
Kyosuke worries that Sayaka isn't happy, because that IS his childhood friend. But Sayaka won't talk about it (and honestly he’s reluctant to bring it up too). Because, in part, Kyosuke's distance allows her to keep patrolling at the (unhealthy) rate that she is. And it was her wish that gave him this. It's HER fault, Sayaka thinks, and so she has to simply deal with it. Especially now that Hitomi is gone, it would feel like spitting in the face of her memory to NOT love Kyosuke.
Madoka is desperately shaking her and asking if she's maybe considered talking to Kyosuke about Anything Ever, PLEASE. Kyoko and Mami are making increasingly judgemental drinking games about them. Homura is also there.

I just had a theory
So we all know Madoka Magica makes many illusions to fairy tales/classical literature in some cases. One of the most notable examples of this is with Sayaka. Given her whole water/mermaid motif (especially in her witch form) and her experience with unrequited love, it’s easy to conclude that she heavily draws from “The Little Mermaid”. However, call me crazy but I think Sayaka’s story might also be based off “The Phantom of the Opera” in some way. Let me explain:
1. Both Sayaka and Erik/Phantom became attracted to their object of affection through music. Erik admired Christine’s talent for singing and dubbed her his “angel of music” while Sayaka was amazed by Kyosuke’s skill as a violinist at a young age. Music is what keeps these two pairs together: Sayaka often brought classical music CDs to the hospital so she and Kyosuke could listen to them together while Erik appointed Christine as his protegee and uses his passion for music to tutor her.
2. Both view themselves as unlovable/monstrous. Throughout both the book and the musical, Erik has many deep-seeded insecurities over his deformities and is frequently referred to by others as a “monster” or a “demon”. Likewise, upon learning the truth about Soul Gems, Sayaka’s self-esteem takes a nose-dive and in episode 8, she directly says to Madoka “I’ve been turned into a monster”.
3. Once they realise their love is unrequited, they literally become the monsters they believe themselves to be. Upon overhearing Raoul’s promise to protect Christine (which for all you theatre kids is the song “All I Ask of You”), Erik swears revenge and repeatedly attempts to destroy their relationship throughout the latter half of the book/musical, fully transforming into the cruel and grisly being everyone viewed him as. Similarly, when Sayaka overhears Hitomi confessing to Kyosuke who appears to reciprocate, Sayaka finally falls into despair and transforms into a witch, becoming a literal monster.
Side note: when I was looking at the plot summary for the book, I learned that there’s a scene in it where Christine is visiting her father’s grave and she encounters a man (who is heavily implied to be Erik) playing a violin. Granted, this kinda muddles with the main core of this theory that Sayaka is playing Erik’s role and Kyosuke is playing Christine’s role, but I still think it was a pretty neat detail and worth mentioning.
I admit, this isn’t a very concrete theory but it’s the best I could do. What are your thoughts on it? Feel free to let me know in the replies!

Just some useless info, but when Jay enters Sayaka's life, I like to think the timeline they're in is a transition between the "Kamijou is a guitarist" timeline and the "Kamijou is a violinist" timeline so Kamijou's, like, a pop rock violinist instead of a classical violinist (kinda like Lindsey Stirling sans the dancing part).
Jay as a violinist kinda started similarly with rock when he first become Octavia's Servant but switches to classical later on (kinda thinking of Kajiura's music especially Madoka OSTs also some classics but mostly because I watched too much TwoSetViolin lately).
On a somewhat unrelated note, I start considering KamiJay as a ship for some reason just because of the whole violin thing. Like, Kamijou notices Jay having interest in violin and teaches him at least the basics.
This AU is supposed to be a Jayaka-centric AU. Why did it turned into KamiJay?! Might as well start shipping Nya and Sayaka if that's the case- (this is a joke. Pls don't take serious).

(Probably) Unpopular Madoka Magica Opinions
- Hitomi doesn't deserve so much hate. She literally said she wouldn't show any feelings towards Kyousuke because of Sayaka. She only went for it because Sayaka never made a move even after her warning. If Sayaka were to have gotten together with Kyousuke, Hitomi would've probably had been happy for her. She seemed like such a nice person at the beginning. (I might need to rewatch a few episodes again in case I got something wrong here)
- Kyubey isn't that bad either. He's just not human, jeez.
- The ending to Rebellion wasn't that bad. It was just confusing and even more bittersweet than the TV series.

deda-adndo replied to your post “i wonder why timeline #3 oktavia had like a concert thing going for...”
It was actually stated by Urobuchi that in some timelines kamijou played guitar instead of violin (maybe the 3rd was one of this and the design is different for this reason?) I had read this somewhere on the wiki and other websites a long time ago so i don't remember the details sorry
Oh, that totally makes sense, then! I went and looked again at the image of Timeline 3 Oktavia just now, and it does have more of a guitar concert theme rather than the classical violin one! So yeah, I can totally see this particular timeline as being one in which Kyosuke played guitar instead of violin :O
And no, no need to apologise! Thank you for pointing out this very interesting fact to me >.O I actually think that I might have read this somewhere in the past as well, but completely forgot about it LOL xD Thanks again for your input ^^ <3

I realised something...
I was watching TV and an advert came on with music I recognised, and I realised that it was the AVE Maria that Kyosuke played for Sayaka in the last episode of Puella magi madoka magica. I looked up who the composer was an it was Gounod. So I look up Gounod. What else has this guy written? AN ENTIRE OPERA VERSION OF FAUST, WHICH INFLUENCED THE ENTIRE SHOW! Nice one Yuki Kajiura!
