The next morning Armitage found a thick letter in the mailbox. Connor had sent it, not from home, but from the former First Order command bunker in Black Spire (now the police station).

Connor... Black Spire... That didn't bode too well. Back when the alliance against Palpatine had prepared to free Poe, Finn, Rey, BB-8 and Holdo from Moonwood, Connor had researched Project Necromancer.

Had they overlooked something during this reaearch? If so, then hopefully just something minor, not a critical detail. Right. It had to be a tertiary thing at best. Connor just was so correct that he'd feel he needed to send the appendix to Rose even five years later.

Since Rose was out taking the horses for a stroll, Armitage opened the letter in her place. He took the data disc, loaded it into his datapad and started reading.

The document was dealing with a topic Palpatine's enemies already knew: How the project group had worked to prepare a replacement body for their emperor and then transfer a strong force sensitive's midichlorians into it. The body had been Rey and the outside source Ben/Kylo, of course. Or so everyone had assumed, because it made sense, given how the duo had formed a dyad in the Force.

But the general idea had been around and the preparation of bodies had begun long before Rey's birth.

Armitage (reading): "...useless as is, but not without potential."

Armitage: "Huh. Father must have written that. Probably his favorite line ever, not just the one that haunted me for two decades. Poor clone kid! I wonder who that was... Snoke, maybe? When was this written again? 21 AFE... that would be 2 ABY in the new calendar. Now that's a year which's memories I certainly could do without."

Armitage (reading on): "I therefore order you to retrieve the boy from Arkanis academy and raise him as your own, Commandant Hux. Your prominent red hair will lead to the natural assumption that he is yours and cover up... his... real.. i... den... di... ty..."

Oh, shoot.

Alright. What feelings came from the realisation that Armitage's father, the cornerstone of his identity, that he had built his personality on, not as a shining example to emulate, but as the target of all his frustration and self-loathing, something he had honed his ability to hate against... was not his father?

Loss, first and foremost. The loss of a large piece that had shaped the man into who he was now.

In a moment of self-depreciation Armitage concluded that he was STILL the son of a kitchen worker. Not that this would have been much better than being a lab experiment... Just a safeguard, and not even a good one, readily discarded when better material had presented itself in the form of young Ben Solo and later in the emperor's own granddaughter. If Armitage hadn't had a rational reason to hate Kylo before, he had one now!

He felt the strong need to most definitely not cook something, and the best way to do so was to bake something instead. In this moment of distress that train of thought made perfect sense.

If an identity crisis came with vanilla cupcakes, then, so Rae thought, her parents should have one more often!

(To learn the exact circumstance Hux was conceived in and the complete family tree, the heroes have to track down his mother. One character's age had to get retconned a little to make work what I have in mind, but nothing major.)

The question makes her laugh and this is one of those rare few that show her teeth and wrinkles her nose. A real smile that doesn't have any strings trying to tie it shut. "Oh, see? Each of her friends come up in the forefront of her mind. "Beach day is absolutely Petah. I no can remembah las' time he actually took time for himself an' set down alla his responsibilities in favour of have some fun. But I will also hafta require his body-weight in sunscreen cause he is surprisingly pale under his...tee-shirts an' stuff." She runs fingers through her hair. "How many times have we spent whole night talkin' an' tradin' comics, or listenin' t' music until wee hours of da morning before? We got our sunrise blanket, you bring da donuts or cinnamon rolls, an' I bring da coffee. We got our spot on da mountain wi' dat really great view. So why risk a good kine when ours is already perfect? Sunrise wi' you." Her face softens a little as she thinks of the third name. Ben's been going through a bit of a rough time lately. Its unusual for him to put off plans or text her an hour after they're supposed to meet up so she knows she shouldn't wait for him. "An' while I know he hates da kine, I'd make Ben do fancy grindz. If we're in a restaurant li'dat...is because his mom or da Admiral are makin' us do it for da 'optics', you know...whole situation dat tastes a lot like poison to us. An' if we get to pick da restaurant, den he an' I already got escape routes an' hide-outs mapped out in our heads from years of experience."

As fillers for my days when I don't read the current fic I'm still into right now entitled Between Dreams & Temptations by tasogareban (because I have been busy with studying and school shit that I think of reading fanfic a distraction, + my anxiety won't let me read because reading fanfics is a ME time), I watched video essays about Reylo, and about the last episode of thr sequel I have yet to watch (because I have not finished the aforementioned fanfic, and this fic is set after between TFA and TLJ so I don't want to cloud my mind with TROS, knowing how it ends already).

The first Reylo video essay I watched was entitled Reylo Theory Explained to the Haters | Why Rey and Kylo Ren Together Makes Sense by The Den of Nerds. It was an OK take, and he said he took his content inspiration from a 3 part series by Vincent Vendetta, so I went ahead and watched those as well. I liked Vincent Vendetta's videos more, and these videos were released after the first movie, episode 8, The Force Awakens. When I read the comments I think people were just speculating / predicting about Reylo happening in the next movie. It was a really good watch. I can't believe Star Wars official posters/merch hinted so much Reylo 😭

Last night, I watched what I thought was a video talking about Reylo in TROS, but she talked about TROS in general.

[Was war da bloß die Vorgeschichte? Ah ja, da geht’s um den Satz von Snoke am Ende von The Force Awakens, dass Kylo „sein Training beenden“ soll. Kylo kommt also zurück, hat sein mysteriöses Training beendet und Hux denkt, dass Kylo ihn jetzt töten wird. Anscheinend wurde er nach der Zerstörung von Starkiller Base degradiert und rechnet täglich mit seiner Hinrichtung. Aber stattdessen...]

Es war ein trockener Kuss, seltsam keusch und in Sekunden vorüber. Ren löste sich von Hux, und ein winziges, verhaltenes Lächeln erschien auf seinem Gesicht. Dann verschleierte sich sein Blick, er beugte sich vor und bewies Hux, dass er nicht geträumt hatte – es war ein weiterer Kuss, den er auf Hux' Lippen drückte, unbeholfen, aber wärmer als zuvor, feuchter, neugieriger. Hux fühlte sich eingehüllt von einem überwältigenden Gefühl, Sehnsucht und Begehren –

"Kylo." Er legte die Hände an Rens Gesicht und schob ihn sanft von sich. "Kylo." Wie fein die Narbe jetzt aussah, fast wie gezeichnet, keine Spur mehr von der verkohlten Schneise, die das Mädchen in Rens Gesicht hinterlassen hatte. Hux konnte nicht aufhören, über seine Wangen zu streichen, es war wie ein Trick, mit dem er bewirken konnte, dass sich Rens Augen mit Tränen füllten. "Ich wusste nicht, ob du zurückkommst. Ich wusste nicht, was er mit dir vorhat."

Ohne Vorwarnung ließ Ren den Kopf an seine Schulter sinken, das Gesicht an Hux' Halsbeuge geschmiegt. Hux' Finger glitten in Rens Nacken, hielten ihn, und plötzlich ergab alles einen Sinn. Er lehnte die Wange an Rens Haar und dachte, dass er das seit langem hatte tun wollen.

Ren presste sich näher, seine Arme um Hux' schmale Hüften. Seine Umarmung war so unbeholfen wie seine Küsse, und Hux verstand, dass all das neu für Ren war. Dass diesen einsamen, grausamen, schönen, verzweifelten Jungen nie jemand geküsst hatte. Nicht so, wie Hux es tun wollte.

"Kylo."

Summary: Rey wiped her sweaty hands on her cloak, trying to breathe steadily. Easier said than done, considering she was about to walk into the monster’s den.

To what end, she wasn’t entirely sure. But she’d volunteered, so here she was.

Kylo Ren makes a different choice on the bridge, and it spirals into Rey going after him, to save his soul and kill the monster keeping him and Luke trapped. Unfortunately, she hasn’t yet realized her own importance.

So maybe it wasn't the best idea, criticising a man willing to kidnap you at knife-point about how to remove blood from clothing, but at least she's trying to be constructive. In the last twenty-four hours, she's not pleaded or begged for any kind of mercy. She didn't offer to pay him a king's ransom to let her go. She's done absolutely nothing to make things harder on him. But she does talk. Sometimes endlessly, sometimes in trickles and drabs. Sometimes she sleeps ~the worst thing one can do with a concussion, but what else is there to do? She clearly isn't going to overpower him. He hasn't really told her what he plans to do with her or what he wants. But this? This is familiar ground for her. As a woman, as a nurse. She takes a breath and nods. The motel is suffocating her with its banality. Maybe it would be better if he made good with his threat, at least she wouldn't shudder looking at the bed and know what secrets luminol would reveal. "Well, what do you want? You didn't ask f' money. You don't seem particularly in organic crime of dat particular variety an' trust me, it wouldn't be exactly excitin' for you anyway. F' ya don' need my advice, den...what? An' wha' are you gonna do if I don' comply?"

Kylo lashes out with the words "What girl?!" as soon as he suspects that Rey may be around.

He kidnaps her and keeps her prisoner; when she wakes up he's on one knee, looking up to her.

He takes his mask off for the first time, for her.

He reads her mind because he wants to get to know her.

During their duel he spares her, he looks at her in fascination, he offers her to be her teacher.

When they have their Force bonds, Kylo immediately seeks her out while her first reaction is to shoot him.

He worries that projecting herself to him might be too dangerous for her.

He opens up to her although she's always attacking him.

Rey is the first person who gets to know what happened that night at Luke's temple through his perspective. She's also the last.

He tells her she's not alone and takes her hand.

He kills Snoke when he had tortured her and wanted her dead.

They fight the Praetorian Guards and prove to be unstoppable when together.

He offers her to rule the galaxy with him - why and how he wants to do that is unclear, but he clearly wants her to be with him.

When she leaves him on Crait, he looks up to her sadly and longingly.

While he's the Supreme Leader, Kylo continues to pursue Rey. He offers her his hand again.

He's the one who tells her her true parentage.

He desperately tries to prevent her from meeting Palpatine and gets stabbed by her. She heals him and he doesn't even look resentful.

Kylo reclaims his Ben persona and immediately goes into the lion's den on Exegol to stand by Rey's side.

Palpatine himself is impressed: he says that they're a Dyad in the Force, one soul in two bodies.

When Rey is about to die, Ben climbs out of the pit Palpatine had thrown him into despite his injuries, only to get to her.

He holds Rey in his arms tenderly, looks around desperately, with tears in his eyes.

He gives her his remaining life force to save her although he knows he won't survive it.

When she kisses him, at first he's baffled. Then he looks happy. It's the only time in all of three movies that we see him smiling.

After all that, there are still people who are surprised or upset and cry out "What?! He was in love with her?" and the studios are being accused at catering to us idiot Reylos.

All I'm wondering about is how there can be viewers who are actually so abysmally stupid. Who knows how many of them have taken the sequels apart piece by piece and made videos and meta's about how awful they are, and this is just one of the major plotpoints they entirely missed.

We Reylos may not have been right either. The same author adds that Rey rejected Kylo. She didn't actually save him, and they didn't end up as a couple. But the bond between them was clear and strong and it played a major role in Kylo's return to the Light. You'd have to be an utter idiot not to see it.

I mean, I’m still glad it was flat out stated that Ben fell in love with Rey because there were people still insisting he only wanted her power or that there was never anything romantic between them, but I get what you’re saying. We have more evidence, I think, of his feelings for her than of her feelings for him. I think it would change things up a bit to have actual concrete canon evidence of those feelings being mutual.

Sure, of course people are happy to hear it. I don't think it's new information at all, and it's honestly weird to me that some people act like it is, but it's nice to actually get recognition of your canon pairing after all the bullshit we've been through. It's the rock bottom bare minimum, but DLF hasn't been clearing that bar for a long time, so it feels like a win.

I think it's 100% clear that Rey, the actual character, loves Ben and desperately wants to be with him, but Rey the actual character was taken out back and shot so DLF could have their SWCU brand avatar. I don't hold tros against the Rey of the first two films or her potential, just like I don't allow tros to ruin Luke and Leia for me. I'm not taking that shit on board because it was a bunch of incoherent nonsense which fundamentally destroyed the entire narrative and thematic heart of SW.

We don't have a declaration from Rey, but she showed us where her heart was by leaping into the lion's den with zero back up or exit strategy. She threw her life down at Ben's feet knowing that her life represented one of the last hopes for the galaxy. She believed in him that strongly. She wanted him that badly.

And, you know, despite the absolute shit show of tros, the actors managed to deliver us a perfect moment based solely on the emotional continuity from TLJ without any scripted dialogue to fuck it up. Her face when she wakes up in his arms. Her kiss. He is the home she's yearned for all her life.

If people can't understand that means she loves him, that's a them problem.

And yeah, it would be great if DLF would acknowledge this incredibly obvious and well-established fact of the ST in words, it'd be nice to have more ammunition because at this point we've earned being petty, but I don't think it would change anything. They literally kissed on the mouth for longer than any other couple in all of SW and antis were blind suddenly, they couldn't see. We get 'kiss of gratitude' and 'but isn't that incest tho' ludicrous copes to this day.

No amount of validation from DLF is going to move the needle for the entrenched doofus brigade in this fandom. Ep IX was the crucial moment which would have vindicated the story and brought the audience together (not that it would ever have won over some people, but you know) and they whiffed that. Even in the shitty, nonsensical execution of tros, we saw the microcosm of what the ST's RotJ would have done.
