Kissing Hux

In everything Hux does he goes for the jugular, and kissing is no different.

He loves giving special attention to your neck, so much so, that you have to be on guard lest anything is left in his wake.

He's less sweet and more "begrudgingly and tiredly affectionate", so anything that's sweet and/or soft is probably prior to caf or in the name of comfort.

He usually kisses close-mouthed. Biting occasionally, but he'll never use his tongue unless his partner initiates.

He'll hold on to your face or shoulders in a stern grip, pressing his body to yours. Hux runs rather cold, but due to his uniform layers, is warm to the touch. His neck is always warm and ruddy, hands cold and pale.

As soon as Hux steps out of the shuttle, hair mussed, he's in front of you. It's night, and the hangar is relatively empty, so he gathers your face in his hands.

Kylo climbs out of the shuttle behind him, ragged and dirt-covered, mask off. He rolls his eyes, boots clicking on the ground as he steps away from you both, giving you privacy.

As soon as Kylo is out of sight, Hux breathes. "Maker." He presses a kiss to your jaw, then to the corner of your lips.

You interrupt the inevitable, "I missed you," with your lips, and he reciprocates eagerly. He pulls himself closer to you as you kiss, he smells like sweat and his cologne. He's a bit too warm, you wonder why.

Once he's pressed firmly to you, he grabs your hair, pulling your head back slowly. He presses a kiss to your neck over your uniform, breath hot on the underside of your chin.

Earth Girl(Rey x Reader) Five

Summary: Days seems to be peaceful on this new planet but with the First Order on your tail things could change quickly.

A/N: I have forgotten about this series ngl but I love it so much and I'm finally back at it! If you're new here you can find the previous chapters on my masterlist. Hope you like it! Let me know what you think!

The days were cold on the mysterious swampy planet, fortunately you had the Falcon, this big starship that was slowly becoming your home, its walls and circular halls seemed worn out yet that detail made them special for you. You were sure this old ship had witnessed a hundred stories.

And there was also Rey, bright as the sun.

It was strange how closer you two had become in so little time but you liked it, you loved to have her around, to take her hand. To kiss her.

This whole thing seemed too good to be true, for moments you thought it may be just a dream but you had realized a long time it was not. It was real, the planets, the star ships and aliens. All of it was real.

Rey was real.

“How long do we have to stay here?” you asked, leaned on a rock outside the Falcon as you watched the night sky full of stars, they looked so different up close and maybe it was because they weren’t the same stars you used to watch from the roof of your building back in your homeplanet.

“I’m not sure.” Rey told you, “Last contact with the General was at least a week ago, and she only said to hide.”

“And until we can contact the Resistance again, what?” you added.

“We wait.” she said unbothered or at least she tried to sound like she didn’t care to wait.

“So we just wait here forever?”

“If we have to.” She said before taking the last bite of her food. She seemed somehow upset about all this, there was sadness in her eyes that tried to avoid you and the stars above you. You knew this had something to do with her family, she mentioned before you arrived at Takodana, yet she had never spoken of it again.

“Rey, what happened to your family?” you asked. Her eyes met the cold ground as she prepared her words.

“They left me in Jakku.” She said, clearly struggling to say those words. “I thought they’d come back someday but... they never did.” she told you really seriously, you had never seen her this serious.

“You know what happened to them or where-” you said.

“If I’d known I would have left the desert a long time ago.” She cut you off. You both stay quiet for a minute, not really knowing what to say until you broke the strange silence between Rey and you.

“It must have been really rough to live all alone.” you tried to show her some sympathy but it clearly didn’t help much. Rey gave you a humorless chuckle before raising her voice again.

“You have no idea what it was like,” She said in a rather sad way, “to wake up everyday and work under the burning sun to have something to barely eat. What it was like to live with the only hope that someday someone will come for you.” she looked so sad talking about her past, this was a side of her you hadn’t seen and it only let you know that as strong as she looked she could be so vulnerable too and that she had always been alone, just like you.

“Nights were the worst.” Rey continued with her past. “I used to look at the sky and wonder where they were, why did they leave me .”

“I’m sorry, I shouldn't have asked.” you murmured sincerely reaching to take your hand in yours. Rey’s eyes met yours for the first time since this conversation started.

“At least I’m not alone this time.” She told you, giving a small squeeze to your hand as a tiny smile curved her lips.

“You’re right.” you said offering her a warm smile.

“I’ll try to contact the base. Hopefully we can get out of here soon.” She said already getting up. “You wanna come with me?” she asked.

“I think I’ll pass just this time, I want to see the stars a little longer.” you said admiring the bright stars painting the sky.

“Sure, but stay close, okay?” she said and you nodded. Rey leaned in to press a short kiss over your lips before disappearing inside the Falcon.

You stayed sitting on your place, just admiring the night sky, it calmed you and at the same time the simple sight of it excited you and the old question came back to your mind, “What’s out there?” but this time you knew for sure that there was something else, thousands of unknown planets that awaited for you to discover.

After a while you decided to explore the surroundings, you wanted to know more about this place. And so you took a nice calm walk through the swampy planet, or maybe not as calm as you expected.

The peaceful atmosphere suddenly faded away as you heard a voice that was definitely not there the day before, turning around you spotted a handful of soldiers, their white armor contrasting with the darkness of the night. Quickly hiding behind a tree, you listened carefully to the intruders.

“Affirmative, Sir.” One of them said to a small blue hologram on his gloved hand. “We found the Millenium Falcon.”

“Bring me the girl.” Said the hologram that showed a cloaked figure, his voice was deep and it scared you. You knew who he was referring to, he wanted Rey, this was probably the First Order Rey had talked to you about and therefore the man in the hologram was their leader.

“Right away, Sir.” The trooper said.

A shiver ran down your spine with fear, fear of what could happen to Rey if they captured her. You had to warn her about this. So slowly you tried to back away.

A branch cracking under your foot alerted the troopers who immediately turned their helmets in your direction.

“We found her, Sir.” Was the last thing you heard before one of them shot a weapon at you that made you fall unconscious to the ground.

When your eyes fluttered open you found yourself in an unknown place, you didn’t recognize the strange place you were in but you were sure you weren’t in the swampy planet anymore because you could see the stars through the big windows in front of you.

From the corner of your eyes you caught a tall cloaked man watching you as if he’d been waiting for you to wake up. It was the same man you saw before in the hologram.

“What do you want from me?” you asked.

“From you? Nothing.” He said looking you up and down before taking a few steps away from you, his gaze turning to the big windows of the ship. “It’s incredible how incompetent these troopers are. They brought the wrong girl". he added.

You took your time to scan the room, it was almost empty except for the big black table surrounded by chairs identical to the one you were sitting in. But most important, there was only one big metal door.

One way in and only one way out.

“Then why are you keeping me here?” you raised your voice again.

“You’re just a bait for the scavenger.” The man looked over his shoulder. “You care for her, don’t you? I’ve seen it in your mind.” His words let you perplex, how could he know something like that? Did he just say he saw it in your mind? Apparently this man searched inside your mind while you were unconscious.

“And she cares for you too.” he turned around and walked close to you, a curious gaze on his face, a long scar crossed his face. “But I still don’t understand why you are so important to her.”

A strange sensation crossed your mind, an electric feeling that tickled inside your head and you had the feeling he was inside your mind.

“Oh.” he finally spoke. “An earth girl, you are from earth. I see why you’re so precious to Rey now. A little childish of her to believe in the legends about your people but tell me, have she asked for her wish yet?.”

You stayed silent looking at him with hate.

“Sir!” the door opened and a young man in black uniform appeared in the doorway, panic in his voice. “She’s here.”

The very next moment you saw a known figure stepping into the room. You recognized the silhouette cover in light clothing, the brown hair arranged in three little buns in the back of her head, you recognized those eyes.

It was Rey, and she looked not pleased to see this man as she held the laser sword in her hand.

Immediately as the man saw Rey, he pulled you from your seat, holding you close to him as he ignited his own strange sword made of a red light. He held it close to your neck, you could hear the way the saber buzzing in a dangerous way.

“Let her go, Kylo.” Rey spoke, anger on her voice. So that was the name of this man, Kylo.

“Join me and I’ll let her go.” Kylo growled, never losing his grip on his weapon. “Pledge yourself to my teaching and I swear nothing will ever happen to your precious Earth girl.”

You observed Rey thinking features, but she didn’t say a word.

“She’ll have everything she wants once I rule over the galaxy.” Kylo added and suddenly you realized his true, evil goals.

Rey’s eyes travel from his to yours, a sorry look on them. You knew she couldn’t accept, she would never and you understood, a bit afraid of what would happen next yet you accepted that it was better than Rey joining this rude skyscraper. You slightly nodded to her.

“No.” Rey said. “Never.”

An idea to escape Kylo's grasp crossed your mind in an instant and you hoped it would work, this man was by far stronger and taller than you but hopefully this would set you free.

“I’ll give you one last chance, Rey. Join me.” he said and just as he was about to speak again you punched the side of his body with your elbow, trying to use all your forces. Without knowing you hitted a wound that had not fully healed which made him grunt in pain, unconsciously letting go of you.

As soon as you were free of his grasp you rushed towards Rey but she ran towards the tall man whose saber was already aiming for you but instead was stopped by Rey’s blue saber.

The clash of the lightsabers soon filled the room as Rey and Kylo fought. The adrenaline rushed through your veins for the sudden battle in front of you, a fight to protect you, that was possibly the sweetest thing someone had done for you. However you wanted the fight to end, you didn’t want Rey to get hurt because of you but how could you help if you were just an earth girl?

No, you were much more than that. Maz had told you not to let the place you were from define you and she was right.

Taking the blaster from your waistband you removed the safety lock and aimed at Kylo but Rey’s body interfered in the way, you held your breath for a moment and stopped yourself from pulling the trigger. You hadn’t realized until that moment that your hands were shaking and your heart was racing really fast.

This was more difficult than you thought.

This was not like training with a rock but to shoot at a moving object trying no to hurt Rey in the way. You recalled the training but most important, you remembered Rey’s words: “You have to be sure when you pull the trigger, no time for doubts in battle, hold it steady.”

Sighed, aimed one more time at the big man who kept fighting against Rey, and concentrated you finally pulled the trigger.

The blaster hitted Kylo’s hand forcing him to drop his weapon.

“Rey! Come on!” you said running towards her and grabbing her hand to drag her out of the room, away from that man you already hated.

Rey and you ran through endless hallways of this big ship, never letting go of her hand. She seemed to know the way out, you assumed this was not the first time she had been inside one of these. You ran shooting a few troopers from time to time, you were becoming good at shooting, you raced down the hangar where you spotted the big old ship waiting for you.

“Did you see that? I never thought I could do that.” you said when you made it to the Falcon. “That was awesome, I mean, not that I almost died but that we could escape, we made a really good team, Rey”

She didn’t answer you at first, she was just so concentrated piloting the ship in the vast space, pulling levers and pushing buttons to get as far as possible from the big ship you had just left.

What an adventure.

“Well, where to now?” you giggled, letting yourself fall in the copilot seat.

“Earth” she said before pushing the lever and jumping into hyperspace.

Hidden Behind the Mask

Kylo Ren/Ben Solo x Reader

Requested: yes-On a mission with Rey, reader encounters Kylo Ren & aims her blaster at him. He approaches her, has her up against a wall, but she finds that she cannot shoot. He removes his mask to reveal Ben Solo, the man she loves and was told to be dead.

“Please, love, please join me,” as soon as Ben had said that, you knew he had changed, you knew he had been tempted by the dark and there probably wasn’t a way that you’d ever get him back. “We can rule together, finally be together without going against orders,” he pleaded. 

“Ben, this isn’t you. Please relax and we can figure this out. Please don’t do this,” you figured he wouldn’t go with you and his next words showed just how right you were.

“No, y/n, can’t you see. You have the ability to be so much more powerful, to be with me, and you’re just throwing it away for what? Tell me, give me a valid reason why you’re staying.  They don’t care about you here, you won’t amount to anything more than a wannabe Jedi.”

You bolted up in bed, trying to catch your breath. It’s just a dream. It’s just a dream. Except, most of it wasn’t. The part of Ben leaving was real and although he didn’t say those things to you, you thought them of yourself in that time and place, and they somehow still manifested in your head. After that night, you were told that Ben died from his own will, but the last memory you had of him haunted you still. 

Ben solo, the only man you ever truly loved, was also the one man that broke your heart into a million pieces. You wanted to hate him, but you could never. He held so much sentiment to you, in so many ways that you couldn’t erase him from your head. He was still a persistent thought that came to mind, but you worked over a long period of time to push it into the back of your head, which brought you from a scared, insecure padawan to a strong, determined, Jedi and Pilot for the Resistance.

You were always close to Leia, your connection with her son bringing you two closer than most. She knew that it was better that you didn’t know he was Kylo Ren, it left you unbiased and if you were forced to face the danger that was Kylo Ren it wouldn’t impact you as much. She also knew that even if you didn’t know he was alive, if he saw you, he would want to go back to the light - or she hoped at least. 

Although it was earlier than necessary, you headed to the communications bay, where you assumed Leia would be. She was talking to some of the other Lieutenants preparing for missions, so you waited for her to finish. 

“y/n, good morning.”

“Good morning, General.” She rolled her eyes as you addressed her officially. You and her got into a regular conversation about everything going on around you. You only noticed a slight change when you mentioned Kylo, you only assumed it was because he was the one that killed Han, that was the only news you had heard about him recently. After some attacks on the Resistance base, you knew he was the one to blame. 

Shortly after you and Leia got to talking, Rey came into the communications bay, “Rey, I’m so glad that you’re here, I have a mission for you two. There are some individuals on Tatooine that you need to pick up and bring here. They are offbase resistance engineers but are elsewhere. Darru Jakar and Corr Halcyon, you two are the only ones that would be able to tell where they were, just be aware - we can never be too sure. You two are the only ones that would be able to find them easily, so that’s why I’m sending you both and if you run into trouble, you’ll be able to fight. That’s all, ladies, and may the force be with you.”

You and Rey also had a very close connection, one that was mostly through the force and also by the fact that Luke trained you both. She knew about what had happened in the past but was very determined to avoid the topic. 

You and Rey got packed and were soon on your way to Tatooine. Making small talk on the Falcon as you got to your destination. Although you assumed it would be an easy mission, you hadn’t anticipated there to be a large number of stormtroopers or Kylo Ren’s TIE fighter. As soon as you saw both you knew that you needed to be on point, or else this could go terribly wrong before it even starts. 

You and Rey were very cautious as you made your way around the desert planet. If you were caught, there would be severe consequences. “You go this way, I’ll go that way. We can cover more ground, be aware so if anyone is close you can sense it.” You nodded in agreement to her statement and made your way to the part of Tatooine. 

You made your way around the area, carefully knowing you needed to find Darru and Corr, rather sooner than later. When you saw them, you made your way over there and grabbed their attention. “We need to leave if we’re going to make it back to base,” you said, quietly. 

You started walking, they quickly followed. As you were exiting you saw Rey about to head into a shop, “Perfect timing. C’mon, we need to go.” You quickly headed towards your ship, hoping for your exit to go as smoothly as possible. What you didn’t realize was that the stormtroopers had found your ship and had surrounded it, waiting for you to get closer. 

“Stop right there,” one of the stormtroopers said. He held his blaster towards you, Rey, and the engineers following behind. 

“I’ll stall them, you go find a way onto the ship.” As much as you wanted to stay, you knew she could handle her own. You ran quickly to the other side of the ship, hoping to be able to make it through to the back of the ship. You could sense something was close by, even though you didn’t know what it was you still rushed the engineers. 

You were finally able to get one of the back hatches open, making sure the engineers could get up the ladder as quickly as possible. When you didn’t see Rey anywhere, you assumed she was still caught up in the fight, so you made your way to the other side of the ship. The feeling of something coming closer came back and when you turned you were faced with your worst fear, the one, and only Kylo Ren. 

You quickly brought your blaster up, aiming to shoot, yet when you shot, the blast stopped mid-air. “What the hell?”

“You really thought you could stop-” He stopped himself as he approached closer. You didn’t know why, but he kept walking towards you. 

“What? Is it something wrong with my face?” you said, snarkily, not wanting to put up with how weird he was acting. He kept walking towards you, even though you couldn’t see his eyes, you knew he was looking at you. 

“y/n?” As soon as the name came through on his obviously modified voice, you froze. Why did he know your name? How could he know it?

“Wh-How? I-How do you know my name?” Before you knew it your back hit against the ship. You were frozen, unsure of how to react to what you had just heard. 

He stood still for a moment, seeming unsure of how to react himself. He just looked at you for a while, until you heard the hiss of his helmet. You were about to come face to face with Kylo Ren. Then his helmet came off and the amount of shock you were in only increased. 

“B-Ben? No, no, no. It can’t be. No. This is obviously just another one of my nightmares, soon enough I’ll wake up,” you squeezed your eyes tight, but when you opened them he was still there. 

His face had changed in the few years of you not seeing him. “I caused you to have nightmares,” he looked heartbroken by the idea of causing you pain. “I’m so sorry, angel.”

“I-You’re not here, there’s no way.” 

“Kylo, leave her alone. Y/n, we need to go...NOW.” Rey had finished fighting the stormtroopers, but more were approaching. 

“Please don’t go, you can stay with me.”

“Ben, I have to go. So either come with me or-” he cut you off by pressing his lips to yours, in a gentle, loving manner. The kiss said so much while being so anticlimactic. “I love you, y/n, now go.”

You made your way to the ship, trying hard to comprehend everything that had just happened. How was he alive? Why had you just found out that he was still alive? He was Kylo Ren? He was a part of the sith, the evil that you swore to protect people from. You had no idea what to do.

You were silent all the way back to base, but you knew who you needed to see as soon as you got there. You stormed off your ship, ignoring Rey calling your name.

“Leia, did you know?” you didn’t mean to be as loud as you were, but you were seeing red. What would you do if she did know? 

“About?”

“Ben.”

“y/n, I promise, I did it to protect you.” Her saying that made you even angrier. “To protect me? From what?”

“y/n, please calm down. I’ll explain, but I need you to calm down.” Your breathing quickened, you suddenly couldn’t catch your breath. “y/n, inhale, exhale. Take deep breaths for me.” You suddenly couldn’t process anything around you and before you knew it, you were in the med bay. 

Once your breathing had settled, Leia came back to check in on you and give some explanation to what had happened. “y/n, Luke and I didn’t want you to follow after, we never wanted you to regret any decision. We knew that Ben was dead, but at the same time, Kylo Ren was born. We knew that if you saw what Ben had become it would break you, considering how much in love you are with him, even still. When the nightmares started, I knew it was him trying to contact you through the force, but you were strong and resistant to them. I just knew you’d be heartbroken if you knew what actually happened, and I’m sorry for not telling you.” 

Both you and Leia had tears in your eyes. You understood why she did what she did, so you couldn’t be mad at her for it. 

“He recognized me and he’s changed a lot. And-and he said he still loves me. Do you think we can get him back?”

“We can only hope.”

so i saw the star war

spoilers ahoy

i guess this is just gonna be random bullet points

* i actually feel pretty chill about it. yay for being spoiled. also like.... if you ignore the ridiculous stuff there’s actually a lot to have fun with in this one. i don’t know how i’ll feel about it once i’ve processed it more. i just know i had fun while watching it, which i know isn’t true for everybody. i totally understand the negativity - it all makes sense to me. i’m just glad i sort of.... FORCED myself to have enough distance to just go in like ‘i’M PrepArED fOr wHAtEveR’

*i did like all the jumping around between locations in the first half and how ben would show up everywhere rey was. what a ‘you’re everywhere i go’ pairing. /chef’s kiss/. also having the different locations gives a sense of spaciousness (even if it’s all happening over a short period of time) which i missed in tlj.

*one of the things that gave me the most joy as the hux thing ??? X’’’D it was EXACTLY like that ‘the farce awakens’ ep where hux LITERALLY JOINS THE RESISTANCE cuz he can’t stand kylo. like what kind of fanfic...... how do the hux fans out there feel? (i really love the hux fans they’re a great bunch XD). shame that he was gone right after though.

* i actually enjoyed the trio dynamic? like i get the desire to move away from ‘trio mentality’ but the rey/poe tension with finn as mediator was fun. and finn and poe as joint generals? adorable. shame that the whole finn/poe thing got a bit clouded by.... stormpilot baiting and rose erasure and all the things... Also i’m not anti any character - i like zorii - but.... let poe stay a gay icon? i guess he can still be a queer icon it’s all good i’m down for whatever.

*speaking of finn.... loved seeing more of his humour back. didn’t love that there was no unpacking of how he feels taking out stormtroopers. but loved the found family of jannah and the other ex-stormtroopers. i feel like that gave SOME resolution/depth to finn’s origins. and finn being a non force user but seemingly super attuned to the force and its ways? i can roll with that.

*more speaking of finn... i wonder what they were doing with the ‘thing he wants to tell rey that he never gets to tell rey’. seems like an obvious ‘i love you’ thing. but at the same time we got reylo (/basks in that for a second/). it feels to me like throwing a bone to the finnrey people? like they didn’t get it in this movie but it could be a thing in the future? regaurdless, i did like how finn and rey were very connected and back to that loving friendship they had in tfa. we never quite got the ‘you have a force bond with the supreme leader?!!’ conversation but we got.... SOME conversation.

* speaking of the supreme leader... kinda love that we got renperor AND ben solo TM. i prefer to view ben more holistically (he is both ‘ben’ and ‘kylo’) but i get that making them two distinct identities was a helpful shortcut of sorts. he could ‘kill’ kylo and switch to being ben in a single scene. i always prefer Soft Boi Ben but if we were gonna get Bad Boy Kylo i’m glad they established it right out the gate. it was like ok, this is what to expect; this is where we’re at with this character. 

*ben with his costume change at the end....... omg. gave me BIG smuggler!Ben vibes. urgh, give me all the AUs. ben deserves more.

*the amount of swagger when he was fighting the KOR

*idk i feel like i’m not even touching on the big stuff. this was just a ‘get all my side thoughts out of my system’ post.

*adam’s smile after the kiss though......... ...  /the most beautiful thing in this world/

*truly iconic that people were right about the strategic, covert introduction of force healing via baby yoda like one month before tros.

*oh yeah it was wILD that so much of the imagery from the trailers/tv spots etc was in like the first five mintues of the movie ??? i totally assumed the ‘i have been every voice you’ve ever heard inside your head’ moment would be climactic rather than right up front

*oh yeah the vader mask.... that didn’t really mean anything in the end then did it?

* re: ben’s death. maybe it’s because i was braced for it but in some ways it’s the best way he could have gone. he was definitely happy and reunited with the light - both through love of rey and of his family. hIGHKey could have done with ben’s force ghost also appearing at the end? the only good thing about not seeing it is.... LF deciding to retcon his death ? ??XD obs they’re not gonna but if you want a crackpot silver lining there it is.

*what exactly does rey’s future look like, may i ask?

* oh yeah, Passing The Saber Through The Force. maybe my favourite moment. the force bond as a bare concept is so romantic to me i would watch a whole trilogy just exploring the magic system of that - it’s limitations and possibilities. 

* i do like that jj developed the visual style of the bond. we got to see them occupying the same space, the way each of them would be seeing the other (’can you see my surroundings, i can’t see yours, just you’)

*i miss that rian johnson sound editing on the bond though..... god, the iNTIMACY of the tlj bond scenes....

*’i DID want to take your hand’

*also just the word choice of ‘take your hand’/ ‘i offered you my hand’. it’s extremely marriage.

*there was also a moment in the hanger when ben was like ‘we’re one’ basically? he was saying it in the context of rey’s lineage but still...............the validation. one soul. 

*palps was like ‘you live and die together’ which made me REALLY think of skytalkers podcast. obviously assumed they would both have to LIVE together but.... /deep sigh/

*blah this could go on forever i’ll add more later

* OH YEAH! reverse anidala was such a thing! why did it have to be SO reverse anidala though? X’D instead of taking her life, he gives her his own. (i know it’s not clear anakin totally killed padme etc etc but ya feel me)

* ok i hate that ben died obvs obvs but, taking that for what it is, it was very romeo and juliet. i kinda love just the imagery of it. like... the physical blocking/choreography of adam getting daisy into his arms, holding her, then he falls and it’s her holding him. the way she catches his neck. really reminded me of the smoothness of the bridal carry. and rey’s flexed foot in that moment of shock. love the body language. back to that kind of ‘’staccato’’ rey of tfa days.

* OH YEAH OH YEAH. i kept thinking about atla. i know people have been making comparisons to it from the start and i’ve been DEEPLY INTO those comparisons. but it was truly a blessing for me to remember.... there is a version of this out there that you love and that is Good Content TM. legit i can just go watch atla again to heal from this. omg yeah cuz REY HEALING HIS WOUND ALSO HEALED HIS SCAR. very crystal cave.......... nah but nah but - the ‘you are every jedi’ was EXTREMELY avatar-esk..... like, engage avatar state. i don’t like how it ended up being the same old conflict between jedi and sith - ‘good’ and ‘bad’ - OBVIOUSLY THE POINT IS TO INTEGRATE THE CONFLICTING PARTS OF SELF; THE SHADOW SIDE; TO TRANSCEND OLD DICHOTOMIES - but i did love hearing all the voices from past jedi. that’s some good ‘the ancestors are with you’ shit.

*one thing i loved about the reylo was how Space Wizards TM they both were in this movie. it so highlights their connection by making it clear that they are each other’s only peer. i thought it would be a thing of ‘why is the supreme leader constantly interacting with/going after this girl?’ but it’s not because it’s so clear that they are the only two people on each others’ level. no one would dare question the fact that they’re constantly circling each other in a lustful murderous rage.

Saw Rogue One. Spoilers galore.

And I thought it was.... okay.

Well, alright, here’s the stuff that I thought was great:

The CGI characters were amazing. I didn’t pay attention to most of the press surrounding this movie, so I totally missed any news about them animating characters, but I was pretty impressed with the final product. I actually missed 99% of Tarkin’s dialogue because I spent all of his scenes going back and forth with myself over whether or not he was CGI; there was something sort of unnatural about his facial movements, like I don’t think his eyes ever really focused on anything, and something about his expressions seemed too... fluid? I can’t put my finger on it, but even if I could tell it was CGI, it was still well done CGI. Leia looked perfect, though, like they absolutely could’ve fooled me with that one.

Seeing walkers stomping around on a beach was pretty cool, ngl.

“Are you kidding me? I’m blind!” made me laugh.

The score is nice. There were a few tracks that were a bit jarring at times  (because they evidently just took music from the original trilogy and changed a note here and there), but the score itself is good.

I liked seeing the Star Wars universe’s equivalent of an archive. That was neat.

The ending. Jyn and Cassian holding each other and waiting for the end, Vader laying waste to all those troops like it’s nothing, Leia’s line about hope– all good choices, A+, very nice.

Since Diego Luna plays Cassian, and Zoe Saldana plays Uhura in the Star Trek reboot, I always see their characters singing whenever I listen to that last song in The Book of Life. 

And the not-so-great:

I could almost swear this movie shared a writer with Jupiter Ascending what with how much PLOT PLOT PLOT it tries to spit at you as quickly as possible. There is 0 time allotted to just give the characters (and the audience) time to process the weight of new story developments. It just blazes ahead no matter what.  Like there’s this one scene when they get back on the ship and Jyn’s all pissed at Cassian for trying to kill her dad, and he gives this one line that I can’t remember exactly, but it’s essentially, “you only started caring about the rebellion five minutes ago, you don’t know what all I’ve sacrificed to bring us this far, so get off your fucking high horse,” and it’s a GREAT line that should really make Jyn shut up and think for a second, but lol guess what, it doesn’t. She just says he’s dodging the real issue and the argument just... drops. Cool. Cool cool cool. And do we ever find out just what kind of darksided shit Cassian had to do for the greater good? Or anything about why he joined the rebellion in the first place? Nope! There’s no time for any of that because PLOT.

Chirrut’s use of the Force was such an interesting idea, but it wasn’t really explored at all. His first scene has him talking to Jyn about her necklace, showing that he can ~sense it’s there even if he can’t see it, so like... What else could he’ve sensed? Could he’ve maybe been able to find the Death Star plans in the archive so they wouldn’t have had to search for it? Could he’ve sensed where they should go once they’d infiltrated the base? I feel like they could’ve done SO much more with his character rather than just giving him a couple of good fight scenes and killing him off.

The only character who gets any kind of development at all is Jyn, and it’s just... not good. Like she suddenly starts caring about the rebellion just because she found out that her dead father cared about it, and that’s literally it. Rather than, I dunno, having her become attached to the other characters and wanting to help them with their cause, the writers just stake all her investment in the rebellion in her relationship with a character we barely see. Awesome.

Honestly, why was Jyn even in this movie? They could’ve given Cassian her backstory, and that’d explain his devotion to the rebellion: the Empire killed his mother and took his father, and he wants justice. Boom. Done. Or they could’ve had Jyn grow up to be the rebel with a droid sidekick rather than just making her some randomass criminal. Or Cassian could’ve also been the ex-imperial pilot. Seriously, there was just NO NEED for this movie to have all the characters it did. They could’ve easily collapsed a couple of them into each other and developed them as they were; instead, we waste all this time being introduced to one unnecessary character after the other. Like I get that the writers probably wanted a Ragtag Bunch of Missfits to go on this adventure, but if you want that kind of ensemble, you need the characters to have actual chemistry with each other, and these characters just don’t. Beyond Chirrut and Baze’s relationship (which is already established by the time we meet them), none of these people ever form any sense of camaraderie with each other; they’re literally only together because the plot needs them together.

And while I’m harping on about characters, Krennic is one of the most forgettable villains I’ve ever seen in any movie. The only interesting things about him were his cape and that one scene where he got choked (and tbf, Vader could’ve choked anyone in this movie and I’d’ve been equally impressed, so whatever). I’m sure the writers didn’t want to distract from Darth Vader with another villain, but... It’s fucking Darth Vader. No bad guy’s going to undermine him, alright, you can afford to write a more interesting beta villain.

idk, I was just really looking forward to this one after loving TFA so much, but Rogue One just didn’t grip me the way the other movie did. I think most of that is just because TFA introduced us to, what, four new characters? And we got to know all of them pretty well (okay, maybe not Poe so much, but he was still very likable and engaging enough with the little screen time as he got). Like we know all of Finn’s motivations from the get-go, we see him go through a HUGE change within like the first ten minutes of the movie, and then watch him continue grow until his final battle. And we got to know Rey really well, too; they kept her past a mystery, but we still sympathized with her longing to belong somewhere. As for Kylo, his motivations weren’t really... understandable or sympathetic lol, but they’re at least interesting (in the parallel that they set up between him and Anakin if nothing else).

I suppose TFA appealed to me a lot more because it had FAR fewer new characters to introduce and therefore more time to make me care about them. I didn’t care that the story was just a recycled Episode IV; the characters carried it so well that it just felt natural for the storyline to play out the way it did. With RO, the storyline steered everything, and the characters seemed to just exist to carry it out. 

I definitely think this story would’ve done better as an EU novel or a miniseries on Netflix, but eh. I didn’t hate it, and I am glad that it’s doing as well as it is box office-wise. And I do like a lot of the fanart/headcanons coming out the fandom rn, so I can at least get into that.
