Kylex; skinny-dipping + body-worship. <3
Kyle refused to move his eyes away from the fireplace. If he did, he knew where his gaze would wander, and he wasn’t willing to risk getting caught. Again.
No matter how Alex pretended not to notice, Kyle was sure he’d seen him staring more than once. How could he not have, with the long minutes Kyle had found himself tracing Alex’s jaw with his eyes, the way Tripp Manes’s dog tags hung off his strong neck, his forearms and the bracelets he’d taken to wearing.
When Kyle had all but pulled Alex into his car for a forced weekend getaway at his family’s old cabin by the lake, he honestly hadn’t done it for any reason other than the fact that he’d watched his friend suffer over his breakup with Forrest Long and Michael Guerin’s inability to make the first move and he’d wanted him to have a break.
It wasn’t until Alex had fallen asleep on the road with his head on Kyle’s shoulder, a true testament to his exhaustion as Alex didn’t usually fall asleep in the middle of the day, that Kyle realized something he’d only vaguely noted before; Alex smelled like vanilla. And jasmines. And pastries. Did he know that? Did he know how good he smelled?
Kyle had thought that a moment to himself as he drove would be okay to indulge in his private musings, but then they’d gotten to the cabin and Kyle had found himself watching the way Alex’s shoulder blades contracted under his shirt. He’d grown more toned since that year he’d gone off to fight Project Shepherd. Not that he hadn’t been gorgeous before.
Of course, then, Kyle wondered why he’d noticed Alex’s body at all since his return to Roswell and told himself to stop. Alex had always been a handsome guy, and there was nothing wrong with a man acknowledging his best friend’s beauty.
Except then most men didn’t imagine running their hands over their best friend’s long, strong back or pressing their lips to their best friend’s sun-kissed soldiers and seeing if they were as warm as they looked.
He ran a hand over his face, exhaling shakily.
“You okay?” Alex asked, nudging his shoulder and sitting down beside him, his good leg crossed, his other stretched out near the fire. “You’ve been quiet since we got here.”
Kyle pursed his lips and shook his head. “No, no, I’m – uh . . . I’m not interrupting anything important, right? I mean, your enlistment justended, and you’ve barely had a second to breathe –”
“Well,” Alex raised an amused brow, “that’s what this trip is for, right? For me to breathe?”
“Right,” Kyle ducked his head, hugging his knees tighter to his chest, gripping his wrist as he ran over what to say. “I just don’t want you to feel like you were forced to come, or like you’re wasting the first real downtime you’ve ever had humoring me here.”
Alex shrugged his shoulders. “I’m not really an expert on what to do in your downtime, but spending it with a friendly face doesn’t seem like the wrong way.”
“Friendly face,” Kyle smiled to himself. It made his heart swell to think that as everyone in Alex’s life turned their backs to him, he still found a friend in Kyle. A comfort. And here Kyle was, unable to help but fantasize about him. “You know I love you, right?” he blurted.
Alex’s eyebrows rose and he laughed. “Seriously, are you okay?”
“I wouldn’t do anything to ruin our friendship,” he said. “I need you to understand that you’ll always have me in your corner.”
Alex’s smile softened as he looked back to the fireplace, his shoulders scrunching. “I know that. And, for what it’s worth, I love you, too.”
Kyle held his gaze firmly. “It’s worth a damn lot.”
Alex nodded in acknowledgment and leaned over to put his head on Kyle’s shoulder again. Once again, Kyle couldn’t help but breathe Alex in, inhaling his scent. His eyes fluttered and he caught himself just in time.
He stood. “Uh – hey, did you see the lake?”
“Oh,” Alex blinked, startled, “not really, to be honest, I was kind of tired when we got here.”
Kyle grinned, holding out a hand. “Well, that’s not right. You’ve got to see the lake, c’mon.”
Alex started to laugh. “Now? It’s the middle of the night!”
“Perfect timing!” He grabbed Alex’s hand and pulled him up with one tug, making Alex laugh harder.
“Okay, okay,” he said. “Just give me a second to put on my shoes. Weirdo.”
Kyle definitely didn’t stare as Alex bent over to put on his boots, didn’t take note of the way his straight hair fell so perfectly over his eyes, or the way his arms looked when he tugged his sleeves up to his elbows.
“You ready to go?” Alex asked, and Kyle realized he’d zoned out.
He could’ve sworn he saw Alex hide a smirk as he followed. “Y-Yeah! Yeah, totally.”
The walk to the lake was a short one, but with Alex’s hand in Kyle’s to help over rocks and an unsteady path, with the world around them turned to silence and the reminder that they were completely alone out here with no one else around for miles, Kyle’s mind turned the walk into a week-long journey.
He didn’t take note of it before, how isolated he and Alex were out here. He imagined them in the cabin, he imagined who would hear them if Alex slipped into his bed, if Kyle slipped into him, if Alex screamed Kyle’s name and begged him to go harder –
“There it is,” Alex breathed, and Kyle woke from his thoughts. Laying before them was a large lake as still as glass and turned silver by moonlight. “Wow,” he smiled. “That’s gorgeous.”
“Yeah,” Kyle murmured, still watching Alex and the way his dark eyes reflected the silver of the lake. “Gorgeous.”
Alex bit his lower lip. “You know . . . there’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”
“What?”
Alex gave him a mischievous grin, and reached down, tugging the hem of his shirt up until he was standing there, his chest bare.
“W-What’re you –”
Alex cut him off as he stripped himself of his pants, and Kyle managed a gasp before he quickly averted his eyes. He heard Alex sit and undo his prosthetic, and the next thing he knew, there was a splash and Alex was bobbing above the lake’s surface, his hair sleeked back, his grin wide.
“Whoa!” he laughed loudly. “The water’s awesome!”
Kyle couldn’t help it. Even as his heart hammered at the clothes left at his side and the knowledge that Alex was naked, a laugh burst through his own lips.
Alex hung his head back until his ears were underwater, his eyes fluttering shut with something Kyle had never seen in him before; peace. Kyle hesitated for a good whole minute before he pulled off his own shirt and pants. He expected the lake to be freezing, but the air outside was actually warm and the water was the same.
As he stepped into the lake, he realized Alex was pointedly staring at him. His cheeks flushed, but something in him hoped that no matter what, Alex wouldn’t look away from him. He liked having his best friend’s eyes on him, raking his very naked body.
He ducked under the surface of the water and reemerged a few feet from Alex, scooping him up in his arms.
“Ah!” Alex yelped and laughed as Kyle picked him up easily with the help of the water and spun him around, nearly bringing them both back under the surface.
Kyle realized too late that his little joke had brought his and Alex’s bodies together, and that even through the water, he could feel Alex’s chest, his stomach, his length against his own. He cleared his throat as he set a still-smiling Alex down and put a few feet between them.
“Well?” Alex splashed some water in his face. “Isn’t this amazing?”
“It really is,” Kyle heaved, letting his head fall back as Alex had done. For a moment, he heard nothing. Then he felt the soft touch of fingers to his back and he sighed softly. He opened his eyes and let his feet touch the lake floor again, but the hands on his back never left. Alex slowly raised his fingers up to Kyle’s shoulder blades, then his shoulders.
Kyle bit his lower lip, letting his head roll back, urging Alex to press against him, to kiss the trail his fingers were leaving, up his neck, his jaw. His lips parted in anticipation, but Alex only put distance between them.
Kyle frowned and looked over his shoulder to find Alex exhaling shakily through pursed lips, the heels of his palms pressed into his eyes as though to wake himself from this dream.
“What –” Kyle shook his head. “Why’d you stop?”
Alex dropped his hands and looked at Kyle like he was sure he’d heard him wrong. His brows were furrowed. “What? Look, I’m – I’m sorry, I don’t know what I was thinking, I’m sorry.”
He sounded so afraid, like he was terrified he was going to be refused again or turned down. Like he was going to be reminded, once again, how unwanted he was, and didn’t want to hear it from the last person he had left.
It made Kyle angry, but not at Alex. Never at Alex. Only at everyone who ever decided that Alex’s feelings weren’t worth anything. That his friendship and love weren’t worth it.
“I’m not,” Kyle blurted. He swallowed, wondered if he should’ve played it off as a joke, but Alex had had enough people refuse to fight for him. There were already two men who’d refused themselves and never stopped to wonder what it would do to Alex’s mind. Kyle wouldn’t make that mistake. He closed the distance between them, taking Alex’s wrists and urging him closer. “It’s okay, Alex. You can – you can do what you want.”
Alex, however, didn’t look the least bit relieved or eager or as hungry for contact as Kyle felt. Instead, he looked . . . hurt.
He moved back. “Am I that pathetic to you? You think I need a – a pity kiss or something?”
“Alex,” Kyle growled, keeping tight hold of Alex’s hands and hoping to whoever listened that he wasn’t making a mistake. But Alex was worth the risk. He’d always been worth it. “I’ve been fantasizing about touching you since that day at the cabin.”
Alex’s brows furrowed and he thought back. “The day you were going to break in?”
“And you caught me right on time,” said Kyle, grinning. “You were so freaking cool–”
Alex huffed a laugh. “You’re – you’re lying, I’m not . . . I’m . . . look, let’s just back inside.”
“No,” Kyle said, putting Alex’s hands on his own chest and taking Alex’s waist in his hands, pulling him in until their thighs brushed. “No, Alex.”
Alex seemed dazed as Kyle leaned in, for just a second, before he snapped out of his thoughts and looked away. “I can’t,” he breathed. “I can’t lose you.”
Kyle hated them then. Everyone that ever made Alex feel like he had to choose between friendship and love, everyone that was ever supposed to protect Alex’s heart and instead broke it. He hated everyone that made Alex this afraid.
He took Alex’s chin in his hand and turned his head, his lips hovering against Alex’s own. His voice fierce, he promised, “You could never lose me.”
And before Alex could object again, Kyle closed the distance between their mouths, taking Alex’s lips in his own and kissing him. The first thing he noted was that Alex whimpered softly when he was kissed, and it made Kyle want to swallow the sound and whatever else he was willing to give him. The second was that Alex’s lips were as soft as he’d always imagined and they were making it hard for Kyle’s doctor mind to absorb anything else except how good it felt.
Alex hesitated, but the longer Kyle kissed him, the bolder he got, and his mouth pressed firmly back against Kyle’s.
“Alex,”Kyle breathed before he could help himself, and did what he’d been wanting to do all day. He reached around and let his palms press against Alex’s shoulder blades, feeling the way the muscles turned pliant under his fingers. He dragged his nails down Alex’s spine and Alex hissed, pressing his body against Kyle’s.
Kyle gasped as he felt Alex’s length against his own, and he tilted his head, deepening the kiss, not wanting to be away from Alex for a single second. The water rippled softly around them, Alex’s hands ran up and down his chest, down his stomach, and hesitated just at the bush of wiry hair between his legs.
Kyle imagined Alex’s expert hand on him, stroking him, and found his body keening into Alex’s touch.
“Please,” he breathed, “please touch me, baby.”
Alex’s eyes were half-lidded, wary, but he reached down between them, and Kyle’s mouth fell open as Alex’s fingers closed around him. His palm was rough and pure pleasure against Kyle’s length.
His head hung back and he thrusted his hips against Alex’s fist, eager to feel more of him at the same time. He reached down Alex’s back and grabbed a cheek, pulling Alex’s hips in against his and feeling his own rock-hard length.
He hesitated for only a second before he reached a finger between his ass and stuck one into his tight hole. Alex gasped, and his and Kyle’s foreheads pressed together, nothing but the sound of their grunts and moans as they touched each other, grabbing onto whatever muscle they could, feeling one another’s chests, nipples, their stomachs pressed together, their hips rutting together until they both came with a scream, their bodies shuddering against one another.
Kyle waited for the regret and embarrassment that came with doing your best friend, but he couldn’t feel it. Instead, all he wanted was to touch Alex, his hands running up Alex’s strong jaw, his cheeks, his hair, back down his neck to his shoulders and chest and stomach and thighs.
“A-Again,” he pleaded, wrapping an arm around Alex’s waist and keeping them pressed together. “Again, please, again.”
Alex huffed a shy laugh, burying his face in the crook of Kyle’s neck. Kyle kept a hand in his hair as he panted. He kissed his ear and felt Alex shiver against him. He held him tighter.
“We can pretend while we’re here, right?” Alex breathed. He pulled back, and his eyes were hesitant, afraid. “We can pretend just while we’re here. We can keep doing this just a little longer?”
Kyle swallowed. “We’re here for a week,” he said, his voice hoarse, his hold on Alex tightening. “We can do whatever you want, baby.”
Alex swallowed, took Kyle’s face in his hands, and kissed him so softly that it left Kyle moaning. When he pulled back, he said, “Then let’s get inside,” he said. “I want you to fuck me on a real bed.”
Kyle’s jaw hung open at the words and he bit Alex’s shoulder, making him gasp. “If I’m dreaming,” he warned, “do not wake me up.”
Alex’s laughter was worth whatever followed this week, Kyle decided. Alex would always be worth it.
Would you believe a bunch of really bad "romance" fantasy books have just seriously put me off romance? I don't think it's permanent, but wow, I am in some kind of romance slump...

They're all at the Crashdown for New Years. Max is back from the dead and Liz is tangled around him as they stand with silly decorations for the new year on their heads. Kyle doesn't mind, even if once upon a time he thought the moon hung in the sky to see the red on her lips.
Now... now Kyle is trying to ignore the closeness of Alex Manes and the fact the ball will drop soon. Alex had just broken up with his second boyfriend since back to Roswell and Kyle... Kyle is thinking of the seconds being loudly counted down, the way Alex is moodily staring at his drink, and before he can stop himself he's pulling Alex by the belt loop on the ninth second, watching him stare with surprise and a sense of hesitant readiness as Kyle's second arm moves to Alex's waist.
"Six seconds," Alex says, eyebrows raised.
"Five," Kyle replied with a grin.
2020 had never looked so good.

Roswell Prompt Advent, day twelve: Snowed In
Now while I’ve been completely, utterly obsessed with the Red, White & Royal Blue Malex AU I’m writing, I did promise my girl @likebadgal-riri that I would write Kylex snowed in, so I did!
‘This is so stupid.’ Alex complained, he was staring out of the little window next to the door, glaring at the snow like it had personally offended him. Kyle laughed.
‘Oh come on, Alex. It’s not that bad.’ He tried, scratching Buffy behind her ears. She was curled up next to him on the couch, watching Alex through lidded eyes.
‘We’re snowed in!’ Alex exclaimed. ‘When did we land in one of those stupid romantic paperbacks they sell at gas stations?’
‘You want to be in a romance novel with me?’ Kyle asked with a smirk, leaning back on the couch in a way that he knew showed off his torso really well. Alex glared at him over his shoulder, but his eyes did dart down Kyle’s chest for a second.
‘I never said I wanted to be there, I just said that we were there.’ Alex threw one more glare at the snow and then headed back over to the couch. ‘Why aren’t you wearing a shirt anyways?’
‘It’s my Christmas present, for you.’ Kyle teased and Alex flipped him off without even looking at him as he stopped near the couch, his eyes now fixed on the fireplace. The fire was burning nice and warm, casting Alex in hues of orange. It make him look kind of ethereal. Kyle shook himself out of it and laughed belatedly. ‘I’m sorry, I don’t mean to laugh at your misery. I’m not wearing a shirt because I spilled hot chocolate all over mine while you were showering, and I didn’t want to go digging around your closet.’
They’d been outside doing some shit for the aliens and had gotten caught in the snowstorm currently raging outside. It was, by far, the worst snow storm Kyle had ever seen in Roswell. Global warming, probably. Or, hell, maybe some new alien problem, maybe one who could control the weather, who the fuck knew at this point? The point was, they’d gotten cold and wet, and then Kyle had spilled the hot chocolate that was supposed to get him feeling a little less like an ice cube all over himself, nearly burning his chest. All in all, highly successful day.

Kylex please!! Getting together romantically please!!
Kyle had been anxiously shifting in his seat all night, words dancing on the tip of his tongue but nerves swallowing them back down.
Alex had asked him to grab some food, but instead of their usual Crashdown, he’d suggested the nice Italian place right outside of town.
Over the past few weeks he’d been sure they were flirting; the sly comment here, the unnecessary touch there. All culminating in what felt for damn sure like a date.
But there they were. Dim lighting, delicious food, soft music. Alex dressed nice, too. A black button up that tightened around his biceps every time he moved and coordinating black pants. The look reminded Kyle of an Alex from years prior, when he still carried the weight of the world on his shoulders, but it was only the weight of this world.
After some awkward silences only broken by Alex’s talk of Liz and Guerin, Kyle realized he must have read everything wrong. He tried turning the conversation to music, then to movies, to Rosa which just led Alex back to Liz, so he tried concerts and food. Nothing worked. Nothing got Alex to really relax and Kyle took it for what it was: a big, red flag that he’d been an idiot.
He’d shoveled the rest of his food in, not wanting to leave anything since he knew what the bill would look like and was desperately trying to get the waiter’s attention.
“You alright?”
“Hmm?” Kyle looked at Alex who had a slightly amused look on his face.
“You’ve been looking like you’re trying to run away for the past fifteen minutes.”
Kyle looked at his empty plate while he picked at the skin around his thumb. “Just all done’s all.”
He smiled when he finally made eye contact with the waiter, thankful the kid seemed to pick up on his raging desire to get out.
“You can talk to me, you know.” Alex was all soft eyes and relaxed shoulders; Kyle couldn’t help but stare. He nodded, taking the check from the waiter and fishing some cash out of his wallet.
“We can split the bill, Kyle.”
“Just let me have one thing, okay?”
Kyle froze at his own words, shocked and embarrassed as he felt the blush creep up his neck. He watched as Alex’s features contorted into confusion. “What does that mean?”
Kyle closed his eyes and when he opened them, plastered a smile on his face. “Nothing. You ready to go? I’m actually not feeling too well.”
With a nod, Alex stood and silently followed Kyle out to the car.
The ride home was borderline torture, neither man saying anything, letting the awkward silence take the reins. Kyle couldn’t get comfortable but was making himself crazy, constantly moving and making the leather seats squeak loudly. Alex, for his part, looked resolutely out the window, twisting his hands in his lap. That tense line in his posture that had been gone for a few, glorious weeks was back. And Kyle’s heart ached.
They’d met at Kyle’s place earlier that night, riding to the restaurant together. Kyle put his car into park and climbed out as quickly as possible, taking a big gulp of fresh air immediately. Alex’s Jeep sat ready to run and Kyle sighed imagining it pull away, ending the evening like this.
“Are you gonna invite me up?”
Kyle looked over the car at Alex stood looking like a dream, hands on the roof and head tilted to the side. Disappointment as thoughts of what could have been filled his gut, so he shook his head, wanting the disaster of a night to end.
“For what? I’d rather hold off on any little green guy talk ‘til the morning, if that’s okay.” Kyle cursed at himself for the bite that escaped with his voice.
Moving around the car, Alex shook his head. “Not for alien talk.”
Shrugging, trying his best to appear unaffected, Kyle asked, “then why?”
Alex hesitated for just a moment, searching Kyle’s face and making him flush with terror and excitement. Together, they leaned it, lips meeting and noses brushing. Kyle felt Alex’s stubble rub against is own and couldn’t recall a better sensation. When Alex finally started to move away, Kyle’s hands instinctually reached out, taking hold of Alex’s jacket to keep him close.
“I thought I got it all wrong.” Kyle didn’t have it in him to hide the quiver in his voice.
“I don’t know how, Kyle. I asked you on a date.”
“And talked about our ex’s the majority of the time.” He watched as the smirk that had grown on Alex’s face dropped away.
“Yeah.” Alex scratched the back of his neck and Kyle smiled, kicking himself for finding every, little, thing Alex did attractive. “I got nervous and the instinct is always self-sabotage, I guess.”
Kyle nodded in understanding. “Okay.”
“I saw you in the car and knew I handled this all wrong. But- “
“I like you, Alex. I have for a long time now.”
The smile he got in return was blinding, his own, no doubt, matching in wattage.
“Me, too.”
Alex took Kyle’s hand in his, surprisingly soft and gentle, and started moving toward the front door. Kyle stopped, nerves refusing to allow his feet to move when the reality of it all hit like a truck.
“I, uh, I don’t. I’ve, y’know, never- “
“No rush, Kyle. Tonight’s only the first of many.”

@roswellprompts had a prompt that said “Alex tells Kyle that he hates his last name so Kyle recommends that Alex changes it to Valenti “ and I couldn’t resist some Kylex fluff!
“What are you doing up here?” Kyle asked, pulling himself up into the treehouse in his backyard. Alex is curled up in the corner, a sleeping bag wrapped around his legs.
“Your dad mad again?” Kyle ventured, crawling over to sit next to Alex.
“Yeah.” Alex admitted, with all the sadness that a six year old could muster.
“You want me to ask my mom if you can spend the night?”
“Nah, I gotta go home before my dad finds me.”
Kyle reached out, threading his fingers with Alex’s, hoping that he could comfort his best friend.
“I hate my dad.” Alex admitted, wiping at the tears in his eyes with his sleeve. “I hate my family.”
“I could be your family.” Kyle offered. “If you want.”
“I can’t be a Valenti, I’m a Manes.” Alex pointed out, with all the conviction of a child.
“You can change your name. My mom did when she married my dad.” Kyle replied. “So, I’ll marry you and you can be a Valenti.”
“Okay.” Alex replied with a shrug. “But I really do have to go home.”
“I hate this!” Alex snapped, running his hands through his hair as he stared at his computer screen.
“You need to come to bed.” Kyle told him, leaning over Alex and dropping a kiss on the top of Alex’s head.
“In a minute.”
“No, come on.” Kyle pushed, gently pulling on Alex’s arm until he was standing. “The work will still be there in the morning.”
“Everything will still be there. All this bullshit, all of this evil tied to my family.”
“You’re fixing it. You’re making it better.” Kyle pulled Alex into a tight hug, feeling his boyfriend relax minutely under his caresses.
“I wish I wasn’t a Manes. I hate this...this legacy!”
“What if you weren’t a Manes?” Kyle asked, and Alex pulled away to give him a confused stare.
“What do you mean?”
“What if you were a Valenti?”
“Are you
” Alex began, his eyes wide with disbelief. “Are you asking me to marry you?”
“Apparently.” Kyle replied, a smirk on his face as he moved his hands to cup Alex’s face. “What do you think?”
“I mean, Alex Valenti does have a certain ring to it.” Alex joked. “It might be worth it.”
“Might be.” Kyle agreed, nodding before pulling Alex into a kiss.

*squeeeeeeee* đŸ„° I looooooove it!!
Kylex Ficlet
based on this photo of Tyler and Dylan for @saveyoua-seat
Tumblr media
Kyle checked his watch and scolded himself for being late; it was part and parcel of his job but he hated whenever his schedule ruined plans which was more often than not. He climbed out of the car and made his way up the front walk. The front door opened at his touch and he sighed in disappointment as he stepped inside.
He paused and waited; waited for the sound of a dog barking and the sound of her little feet as she came running towards him but there was nothing. His instincts kicked in and he quietly moved through the house, worried as to why Buffy hadn’t started to attack him yet. Kyle reached the doorway to the living room and stopped in his tracks.
Alex was lying on the floor between the couch and the coffee table; his hand tucked under his head with his eyes closed. His arm was draped over Buffy who was lying opposite him, her tiny paw resting upon her daddy’s neck. The very sight took his breath away and Kyle just stood there, staring, with a smile on his lips.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone and snapped a quick photo. Kyle immediately set the image as the display picture for Alex’s contact information on his phone before slipping it back into his pocket. He quietly moved into the room but Buffy began to stir. She opened her eyes, looked up at him then closed her eyes again.
Kyle sighed; Alex was pushing himself too hard. He needed the rest. Kyle turned and made his way to the kitchen where he found a pot of water on the stove which had completely boiled itself dry. He lifted the pot aside, filled another one with water and set it to boil before opening the cupboard to search for pasta. He moved quietly and carefully around the kitchen, turned the oven on and waited till it was ready before placing it into the oven and setting the timer.
He was about to start cleaning up when he felt something nudge his leg and looked down to see Buffy looking up at him. Kyle dropped to his knees and started scratching her behind the ears.
“Look who’s finally awake” he whispered. “You’re such a good girl; watching over your daddy like that. Who’s my best girl?”
“My best girl” Alex corrected him.
Kyle looked up and watched as Alex stifled a yawn. He still looked tired and his hair was a mess but he still looked beautiful. Kyle got to his feet, held his arms out and pulled Alex into his embrace.
“I’m sorry I’m late” he whispered.
“If I had a dollar for every time I heard that” Alex joked.
“I know”
“Well, I’m sorry I let dinner go”
“It’s okay, I got it”
Kyle broke away from Alex then scooped Buffy into his arms.
“Why didn’t you wake me?” Alex asked him.
“I’m sorry; you just.. Looked so beau
so peaceful that I didn’t have the heart”
“Kyle-”
“Alex, I know you push yourself too hard. And I know you don’t get anywhere near enough sleep”
“Who does these days?”
“You think I don’t know about your nocturnal wanderings?”
Alex averted his eyes and Kyle carefully deposited Buffy back down onto the floor. She immediately wrapped herself around Alex’s leg.
“How long have you
?” Alex asked.
Kyle reached up and placed both hands on Alex’s shoulders.
“I’m a Doctor, remember?” Kyle whispered.
“I thought that
That I was being careful not to wake you
”
“Alex-”
“Like you said, you’re a Doctor
And you need sleep and your rest and I don’t want to mess with that”
“Alex!” Kyle interrupted. “I want you to wake me, okay? I want you to talk to me about these things
I want you to share this with me”
“Kyle” Alex began “you have enough crap to deal with in your life with your job and Project Shepherd and the last thing you need is my crap on top of it”
“And as your boyfriend” Kyle said “your issues, your trauma
become my issues and my trauma too
And when you share that with me, I can help you”
“Just because I can operate on two hours of sleep a night, doesn’t mean you can”
“I’m just saying
You can wake me, you can talk to me”
“Kyle?” Alex frowned. “Is this really just because you found me asleep on the floor?”
“No, this is because I love you” Kyle replied “and I want to help you”
Alex’s eyes trailed towards the oven where he saw the dish inside. He looked at Kyle.
“You made dinner?” he asked.
“Of course” Kyle replied.
He looked around the room and saw Buffy’s dinner already on the counter.
“You made hers too?” Alex asked.
“I wanted to let you sleep”
Alex smiled, leaned over and kissed Kyle.
“I love you” Alex whispered “you take good care of me
 of us”
“Of course I do
 and I always will”

Kyle Valenti Appreciation Week [Day 1]
“It’s a lot bigger than I thought it’d be,” Alex said, and Kyle smiled.
He’d spent weeks preparing to go to this doctor’s convention in Albuquerque alone, wondering just how many old men in lab coats he would be forced to listen to discuss the importance of the work they’d done at their bigger, fancier hospitals. Then, on the morning he was getting ready to go, Alex showed up at his doorstep with a backpack and a smirk.
               “Ready to go?”
Kyle was more than a little grateful. He’d thrown his arms around Alex’s shoulders, making him laugh. The beautiful sound was a good start to what was already beginning to look like a more bearable trip.
So now they stood before a giant hotel that Kyle was sure was bigger than Roswell’s hospital, ready for five days of lectures and – hopefully – one too many martinis to get through it.
“Do not leave me alone with these people,” he muttered as the automatic doors let them in, and the cold air conditioning slapped their faces.
Alex scoffed. “If you hate coming to these things so much, why do you? Couldn’t you just take a sick day or something?”
“I’m a doctor,” Kyle said miserably. “I’m legally not allowed to be sick.” He mustered a smile as he checked into his room.
“Oh!” the receptionist smiled at the two of them. Kyle guessed she rarely saw anyone under the age of seventy at one of these things. “Your reservation doesn’t mention a plus-one. I can update you from the two double-sized bedroom to the single king-size, if you want.”
Kyle glanced at Alex with wide eyes, and was glad to see he wasn’t the only one blushing. Then a ping caught Alex’s attention and he pulled out his phone.
“Uh – we’re just friends,” Kyle stammered. “We’re not – I mean, he wouldn’t – he is way out of my league –”
“No,” Alex cut him off, pocketing his phone and smiling politely, if not a little uncomfortably, at the receptionist. “We’re good with the two-bedroom, thanks.”
Kyle swallowed and nodded, handing in his doctor’s badge and trying (and failing) not to look to Alex every so often, who was doing a great job of avoiding Kyle’s gaze completely. Was it really that bad for people to think they were together? He knew Alex was amazing, he knew he’d made mistakes himself when they were teenagers, but he’d hoped that they’d grown past that. That when someone asked if they were in love, they could laugh it off and take it as a complement.
Kyle wondered if it was normal to want people to assume you were dating your best friend, then realized he was being spoken to.
“Thirteenth floor, room 1369,” she said, still looking from Kyle to Alex and back as if too in love to know who to properly stare at.
“Great,” Kyle said, eager to go. “Thank you.”
They got onto the elevator with one old woman in the corner who was busying herself with pinning her badge on her lab coat.
“Forty seconds,” he muttered to Alex who huffed a chuckle. “We’ve been here forty seconds, and I already wish I was dead. Ironic, considering we’re surrounded by doctors.”
“Relax,” Alex said distractedly, and Kyle just realized how close he was. “You said the first lecture isn’t until tonight, right? So we’ll get to the room, and you can rest up until then.”
Kyle swallowed. Alex’s breath was warm on the shell of his ear. Was that normal? To like Alex’s breath against his skin? To want to lean back into him to feel more of it?
He shook his head, shutting his eyes tight. He was exhausted, and being ridiculous. He didn’t want to lean back into Alex – seriously, what was wrong with him today?
Once they’d reached the tenth floor, the old woman stepped off, and Kyle and Alex were alone. He looked down at his shoes, feigning nonchalance. “Can you believe that receptionist thought we were together?”
He shrugged a shoulder. “It’s not that hard to believe.”
“Still,” Kyle said, “I’m sorry if it made you uncomfortable.”
Alex frowned. “Kyle, I’m not –”
               Bing!
The doors opened to the thirteenth floor, and Kyle nudged his chin. “That’s us.”
They stepped off and down the carpeted corridor to their room. Kyle used his pass to let them in, and Alex let out a low whistle at the sight. It was a suite, it had to be. The door opened to a large sitting room with Victorian-esque furniture splayed around and flower vases on small wooden tables. There was a large-screen TV hanging on the wall and a small kitchen on the far right, reminding them that they hadn’t, in fact, been transported to the eighteenth century.
“Wow,” Alex murmured, checking the room on the left. “The beds are in here!” he called. “So’s the bathroom.”
“Great,” Kyle said, “because I need a shower to wash off the convention from my skin.”
Alex smiled, and Kyle tried not to think of the pride that bloomed in his chest at the sight of it.
As he rummaged for a pair of underwear and pajamas from his suitcase, Alex got another ping on his phone. Kyle threw glances at him, and noticed that his smile dimmed before he’d even pulled it out of his pocket.
Without responding, he clicked it off and tossed it on the bed.
               “Everything okay?”
Alex hummed, mustering a smile that Kyle had learned long ago meant that he was bothered and trying not to fall into his own mess of thoughts.
“Hey,” Alex said. “I heard about this cool burger place, just down the street. You want to clean up and go?”
He groaned. “I’m so in love with you, please don’t ever leave me.”
Alex laughed, his cheeks red. He plopped down on his bed, arms outstretched. His shirt had ridden up his stomach, and Kyle’s eyes lingered on the tanned patch of naked skin. Alex’s eyes were closed, and he raised his hands to fold under his head, bringing his shirt up more.
If Kyle asked, would Alex let him touch him there? Would he let Kyle run his hand across his stomach, maybe higher up his shirt? Kyle imagined just lying down beside Alex, Alex looking at him with dark, hungry eyes. Alex reaching up to cup his jaw, caress his cheek, lean in with an open mouth and eager hands. What would Alex do, he wondered, if he just lied beside him and told him; Do whatever you want, I want you to.
“I don’t know why you complain about these things,” Alex said, yanking Kyle out of his thoughts. “A whole week away from work with a fancy hotel room sounds pretty good after Roswell.”
“It’s fancy this year,” Kyle said indignant, feeling a weird swell of shame in his chest. Not for the first time, Kyle was glad Alex didn’t have Isobel’s mind-reading powers. “You weren’t here when they put us in motels.”
“We could’ve had fun in a motel.”
“It’s a motel,” Kyle deadpanned. “There only thing you can do there for fun is . . .”
Alex raised a brow. “Have sex?”
Heat rose to the tips of Kyle’s ears and he cleared his throat. “Could you imagine . . . if – if we’d been there . . . together? Last year?”
Alex said nothing for a long while, and Kyle didn’t dare look at him. Then he heard Alex sit up in bed.
“Kyle –” he started, his voice strange, then –
               Ping!
Alex turned silent, and Kyle looked over at him to see him focused on his phone, his finger hovering over the screen. Finally, Alex swallowed and pocketed it.
               “You okay?”
Alex slid off the bed. “Yeah. I’ll go ask what time the meals are in this place,” he said. “You should get cleaned up.”
He patted Kyle’s shoulder twice on his way out, and Kyle watched him leave. The second he was out the door, Kyle threw his face into his pillow and cursed himself.
What had he said? What had he been thinking?! Alex was going to think he was hitting on him, pushing himself on his gay friend because he was bored!
“Idiot!” he yelled, his voice muffled. “What were you thinking, what’s wrong with you?!”
The empty hotel room didn’t respond.
As they sat over their burgers and fries, Kyle thought Alex was unusually quiet. Every time he tried to make him laugh, Alex would get a call or text, and his smile would instantly fall away.
“I’m really glad you’re here,” he tried. “There’s no way I could’ve made it through this week without you.”
“Week hasn’t started yet,” Alex reminded him, rational and calculating as always. Kyle smiled to himself.
“Why’d you decide to come anyway?”
Alex folded his arms on the table and sighed. He looked a lot more tired than he had that morning, but he smiled, nonetheless. “I didn’t want you to be alone.”
Kyle’s heart fluttered in his chest. “Alex –”
               Ping!
Alex shut his away, his smile faded. “Sorry, just – just one second.” He pulled out his phone, checked the message on the screen with furrowed brows, seemed to hesitate about something, then swiped across his screen and fell silent again.
It was when they were nursing their milkshakes, Alex mindlessly swirling a fry in his, that Kyle couldn’t take it anymore.
“Okay,” he finally said, “what’s going on with you? I’m the one that’s supposed to be miserable on this trip, remember?”
               Alex blinked. “Nothing’s going on.”
               “Alex,” Kyle said. “It’s me.”
Alex said nothing a moment, then another text came, and he all but flinched. Kyle frowned. There was only one person who could give Alex that kind of reaction.
His shoulders fell. “It’s Guerin, isn’t it?” he said. “He’s the one that’s been calling nonstop.”
Alex shut his eyes and sighed. He ran a hand through his hair, and said, “I don’t know why I can’t talk to him. Not now, I –” he pinched the bridge of his nose. “I thought I could get over . . . the whole thing with Maria, but I . . . I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”
               “Why didn’t you tell me?”
He shook his head, and managed a smile. “Because I don’t understand what’s happening either. I don’t get why it’s suddenly . . . bothering me so much. And because this trip isn’t about that. This is about you, so let’s just table Guerin until some of this starts to make more sense, okay?”
Kyle stared. He’d spent years watching Alex put his own feelings aside because everyone else was just that much more important. He’d seen Alex ignore his own tears so he could wipe away Kyle’s, he’d seen him bleed for Michael over and over.
“You know,” he said, “back in high school, when I first started to become someone I’m not proud of –”
Alex frowned. “What – why are you bringing that up now?”
“You didn’t hate me for it at first,” Kyle went on. “Even when I didn’t invite you to parties, even when I told people that I didn’t really know you, even when . . . when I called you things behind your back –”
“Stop,” Alex shut his eyes, “I don’t want to talk about that.”
“You have to,” Kyle insisted, leaning in and taking Alex’s hand. “Because even after all of that, you wanted to see the good in me, and only the good. And then, when I stopped talking behind your back, and said all that messed up crap to your face, then you started to get angry. You put me in my place, every time. You give people chances, Alex. That doesn’t mean you don’t know how to punish them.”
Alex stared at his milkshake. “What’s your point?”
“That I got mine,” he said, and shrugged a shoulder, smiling. “And Guerin’s about to get his. It’s okay, Alex. You’re okay.”
Alex stared at him a long while, then a smile tugged at his lips. “You were wrong, you know,” he said softly. “You’re the one that’s out of my league.”
Kyle blinked, and realized he’d leaned in impossibly close. He cleared his throat, sitting back, his face inexplicably warm.
“Manes,” he murmured, shaking his head. “This’ll be one hell of a week.”
As he watched Alex bite his lower lip to keep his smile from widening, his face a cute shade of pink, he realized this trip might not be as bad as he’d thought.

Roswell Prompt Advent, day four: Miracles (and Max)
I kinda ignored the Max part and wrote a soft Kylex drabble instead. I swear I wrote Malex for this month too, I know it’s in there... Just not in the first few days apparently.
Also on AO3
‘This is a damn miracle.’ Kyle said, putting his feet up on the coffee table. Out of pure reflex, Alex smacked his foot.
‘Off.’ Alex said sharply.
‘This is my house.’ Kyle complained, but he removed his feet either way.
‘Our house, asshole.’ Alex flopped down on the couch next to him. Kyle smiled brightly at him.
‘Yeah it is.’ He sounded proud, and Alex rolled his eyes, but he was smiling too. It was hard not to when Kyle looked at him like that. ‘What I was saying before you so rudely interrupted me-‘ Alex sighed. ‘is that it’s a damn miracle we’re here, actually together, on Christmas eve!’
‘Except we’re both exhausted and will fall asleep before nine.’ Kyle laughed and pointed a finger at him, grinning loose and warm.
‘That’s what I love about you, your unwavering positivity.’ Alex rolled his eyes and kicked out half-heartedly with his left foot. Kyle caught it and dug his fingers into the bottom of it, Alex only tried to resist for a few seconds before caving and letting Kyle massage his foot.
Alex let himself slouch further onto the couch, shifting around until he was curled up on his side and had his foot properly in Kyle’s lap. He let out a breath he didn’t even realize he’d been holding.
‘You okay?’ Kyle asked after a few minutes of comfortable silence.
‘Better now.’ Alex admitted. It had been a crazy few weeks, not that they ever seemed to be capable of going longer than a month without something crazy happening, but still, the last few weeks had been insane. Alex had never been super good at letting go of something unfinished. He liked to finish something so he could cross it off his mental to-do list. So that it didn’t keep floating around the back of his head. So that he could actually relax. That meant working until something had been completed.
Sometimes he’d forget to eat, or sleep.
Now that Kyle was around more, he’d gotten better at that though. More accurately, Kyle would feed him and drag him to bed and make him take breaks. He made Alex look after himself while Alex looked after everyone.
‘That’s good. You’ve been working too hard.’ Kyle said, sliding his thumb along the muscle that made Alex want to kick him. Alex let out a laugh.
‘Says the guy who’s pulled, like, fifteen double shifts in the last month.’
‘Fifteen is a little much.’
‘Fine, maybe twelve.’ Kyle made a face.
‘That’s
actually terrifyingly accurate.’ He said and Alex found himself laughing fondly.
‘Let’s make a deal.’ He swung his legs down and pushed himself off the couch. Kyle looked a little confused and then intrigued as Alex planted himself on his lap, straddling him on the slightly creaky old couch. ‘Starting in January, we’ll make sure we have at least one day a week off, and we’ll have a date night, and they can’t be on the same day.’ Alex offered Kyle his pinkie.
‘A pinkie promise?’ Kyle asked with a raised eyebrow. Alex just pushed his hand closer to Kyle, who hooked his pinkie around Alex’s with a sigh.
‘Well?’ Alex asked.
‘Okay, I pinkie promise.’ Kyle said earnestly. Alex smiled at him and Kyle did that thing where he blinked at Alex like he was trying to figure out if he was real. So Alex did what he generally did when Kyle looked at him like that. He leaned in and kissed him. Kyle’s soft exhale before their lips met was familiar at this point and it never failed to make him feel like he could run through a brick wall.
They ended up in bed before nine, but not to sleep. It was Alex’s best Christmas eve by a mile.

SaL anon here and so happy to see that you posted the prologue!!! And a wonderful start to things too, I'm all for working some fun Kylex banter as a preview to Malex marshmallow fluff (Alex shutting Kyle down before he could get the words sex shop out is priceless). So my question for you my friend is do we talk Next to Me now or wait for the full story to be posted in all is soft, gooey glory??
We can absolutely wait until the full fic is out. My goal is to post it tomorrow. If I'm lucky that will be in the morning before work, if not, I have to be in my office tomorrow and it's my bosses last day so that's gonna be a whole thing in which case it will be after I get home. Worst case is Saturday but the fic is done, I just want to change the font in hopes that I'll be able to catch any typos that way (I read through Heart of Courage the other day and 😬😬😬), and make sure everything makes sense. I'm soooo excited to share it though and I'm so glad you liked the prologue with Kyle! They are definitely going to owe him one hell of a fruit basket!

Why petend you care about alex and forlex? stick to miluca and go
Why pretend you care about Alex and Forlex? stick to Miluca and go
on and tell folks where to find your rambly impromptu platonic, familial, and romantic multishipping fic? Sure, nonny. #ShamelessSelfPromotionSaturdays.
Interested in me totally not caring about Alex Manes at all, no siree, not me. Nope?
Don’t You Know Who I Think I Am? - Kinda have this thing about Alex and Rosa being kindred spirits in a way, so if you’re into the idea of two emo punks taking a ride into the desert and having a totally emo chat that may or may not be focused on Alex and his ongoing quest to find himself, then hey, knock yourself out. Rosalex feels.
The Taste of Ink: Here’s the thing, I’ve kinda been trash for Max and Alex since that high school episode. So, I finally had to put my fascination with this into words. Hence, a high school AU about an emo punk musician and his friends-to-lovers relationship with a soft, emo nerd with a knack for cheesy prose. Manevans Rights. They still haven’t fed me this dynamic this season, and I’m bummed about it. But alas, Manevans is still my jam.
Just Me out here miluca-ing. Only, Miluca, nothing else, just Miluca. Yep. Yep.
What’s that? Oh, an Echo:
On Wintery Nights: Sometimes, I kinda, accidentally have mushy feelings and like care about people and stuff, so sometimes I write them things. But don’t judge me, Nonny. Against my efforts, I am, sadly, human. But if you’re into sexy fluff, I mean, domesticated Echo, and snow, and showers, and cuteness? I mean, sure, it’s all squishy and cute. Shut up.
Fire & Lightning: My version of Max returning was pretty damn basic, but heavily elemental. But hey, who doesn’t love a little Echo writhing beneath the moonlight? Rainy days and indie songs set a mood, I guess.
*looks around* So, as the resident DeLevans fangirl...
Holding the Universe Together: All I’m saying is Max still pining after Liz is kinda adorable, but throwing Maria in makes everything better. It’s totally platonic, but listen, I’m also here for romantic DeLevans too, don’t shame me.
But listen, Kyliz tho:
Compasses - Kyle is my heart. And Liz had his. And darn it all, I had to pay homage to how adorable they are with snapshots of their relationship, and OK so it’s a lot of feels and angst. Apparently, that’s my thing. Sorry!
Kyle is like a fine wine, and I do mean Fine. That man goes well with just about everything and every freaking one. Haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of Kyle ships TBH...
Muy Calenti?
Desert Dust’em: Jenna and Kyle get a fire shipname because they're en Fuego.  Muy caliente. You want sweaty, post workout Kyle and Jenna getting a little loving before she skips town? Sure. Knock yourself out.
Kyluca?
But Who Takes Care of You? - Wild tumbleweeds rolling across this ‘ship, but I don’t care, I don’t care, I don’t care. Kyluca will be absolutely perfect friends and perfect friends to lovers, and this is just how I envision they are or would be because God knows they aren’t giving us much to work with here. *grumbles*
Oh this one is fun...
Something Unexpected - The title literally says it all. Kyle going on an unexpected date with someone no one saw coming. Truly cracked. And gift giving and being a little ish are apparently who I am. I don’t know. ;)
I don't even go here and yet ...
The Art of Reciprocity- I don't even go here. At all. But someone I like does, and I can play in the sandbox. Isobel thirsting for Kyle and not having boundaries? Kyle being as patient as a saint and doling out advice? You like a taste of kysobel/kybel? Sick fic? Isobel attempting to grow? Ozark? Well ...
Of course, there are also what I guess can best be described as Witchmina Productions. And if I’m being honest, this doesn’t even BEGIN to cover the amount of stuff @mercenarywitch and I have spun or came up with, intentional or accidental. Also known as the queer rights collection apparently.
My Best Friend’s Wedding AU: Malex :( but Kylex :):  Yes, it’s Miluca. But it’s also Malex and Kyles too Because malex angst works, and Kylex is life.
My Best Friend’s Wedding AU: Echo :( Marliz :) - Honestly, Echo, CamEvans, and Marliz rights, man.
Bad Habit/Whiskey and Wine: Because sometimes when she makes FIRE moodboards, mini-fics just come out. Also, CamLiz are HOT AF. So, hey. Two hot girls flirting at a bar. Good times.
Family and Friendship Feels, You ask?
What Matters is the Now: The DelTecho girls with Arturo and Mimi at Christmas with a special appearance by Kyle? Mimi and Maria Feels? Rosa and Liz feels? Arturo and Rosa feels? FEELS? Yup, yup.
Spice Up Your Life:  Young Deltecho girls and Mimi for Halloween. Yes, it’s about the spice girls. Shut up.
Honorary Ortecho: Because the show still hasn’t delivered on that Arturo and Maria goodness, but screw it.
Magic In Her Bones: Because Mimi and Maria have all the black girl magic, screw that tiny little town.
Salsa Sundays - Totally in there somewhere. Mimi, Liz, Maria, Arturo. Kyle. Good times. Fun stuff.
Pod Squad & Friends on Movie Night - Because sometimes crack is fun. With an eclectic bunch like that, picking a movie when they hang out is an event.
I’mma let you in on a little secret, Nonny. This isn’t even everything.
It’s bad. Kinda embarrassing. There are flashfics in the archives that have never seen the light of day, buried in drafts and conversations.
Oh ... oh damn, I forgot to add the miluca!

My 12 (actually 13) days of gifts starts tomorrow!
At this time, I've only written 5 which is terrifying and I'm a mess! However, if all goes to plan, there's are the days they'll be posted and what to expect:
13th: a Rosabel fic about them bonding over being the only 2 normal people surrounded by geniuses
14th: echo proposal fic!
15th: an au where rather than aliens, they're time travelers and they team up with humans to fix whatever a Traveler may have fucked up. I hope to expand on it more one day.
16th: a sequel to Can I Get You What You Need
17th: a sequel to Make All The Madness Go Away
18th: simple malex hurt/comfort
19th: malex miscommunication angst! (I haven't written this and there's a massive chance I'll turn it into fluff)
20th: fluffy kylex
21st: kidfic involving Alex learning he can be a good dad
22nd: fluff physically while angst mentally... It's a mess, but that's malex!
23rd: Alex writes a letter to santa for a boyfriend. Suddenly an alien crashlands in the backyard.
24th: Alex and Isobel friendship fic
25th: Step Up au
There will be some more sprinkled in throughout because if you know me, you know I write like I'm running out of time. Some of these are gifts for anons who sent in requests back in June, some of these are requests for when I asked for these days, and some of these are gifts for people who have made me enjoy my time on tumblr a ton more. Anywho, get excited!
