take my heart and run away
Kyle’s been dating someone for the last six months, but no one knows who it is. Yet.
Written for @kylevalentiweek2021 - Day 3
“You’re smiling at your phone again.”
Kyle looks up at the sound of Alex’s voice and tries not to blush. He feels his face heat up though, so he knows it’s no use.
“No I’m not.”
Alex just raises an eyebrow and Kyle’s been unable to resist that since they were kids. Which is frankly unfair.
“Okay, maybe I am.”
“Care to share?” Alex asks but not in an intrusive way and Kyle’s grateful.
Does he want to share? Can he share?
“Maybe? I’m not sure.”
“Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Yeah, I’m not gonna push. If you want to share you can.” Alex shrugs and Kyle stares at him.
“Wait, really?”
Alex chuckles. “Yes, really.”
“Huh.” Kyle stares at his phone for a moment before looking back up at Alex.
“It’s not Steph again, is it?”
“Awe are you concerned about me?” Kyle teases. Alex shoves his shoulder.
“Should I be?”
Dammit. There’s that eyebrow again.
“No. This is...it’s good.”
Alex nods and pats his back as he takes his drinks and heads over toward where Michael is sitting, watching the exchange with a cheshire grin.
When Alex puts the beers down on their table Michael takes his and salutes to Kyle with a wink before Kyle turns shaking his head.
His phone buzzes and he smiles.
[Greg: why is Alex being a nuisance?]
[Kyle: wants to know who I’m texting]
[Greg: did you tell him?]
[Kyle: no. want me to?]
[Greg: no I should talk to him first]
[Kyle: okay <3]
Kyle looks up as Maria places a beer down in front of him and he smiles sheepishly after locking his phone.
“Thanks.”
“You seem...lighter,” Maria says as she tilts her head to the side and looks at him inquisitively.
“Lighter?”
“Yeah. Happier. It’s a good feeling.”
“Huh. Thanks, I think.” Kyle smiles as he finishes his beer and goes to stand. He places money on the counter and Maria grabs it.
“Not staying?”
“Nah, got an early shift. Gonna say bye to the lovebirds.” Kyle jerks his head towards where Alex and Michael are sitting and Maria laughs.
“Bye.”
Kyle knocks his fist on the counter and walks over to Alex’s table.
“Leaving so soon?” Michael smirks behind his glass and Kyle rolls his eyes.
“Yeah, I’ve got an early shift tomorrow before a long weekend off.”
“Oh, gotta hot date Valenti?” Michael asks cheekily.
“Thinking about my sex life Guerin?” Kyle shoots back and grins when Guerin grimaces and Alex laughs.
Oh, if they only knew.
“Hey, Greg’s coming to town this weekend. He mentioned getting everyone together at the Crashdown, if you’re free.”
“Oh? Is he? I should be, yeah.”
What they don’t know won’t hurt them, right?
Because while he knows Greg is coming to town this weekend, they don’t know that he’s actually coming tomorrow night and is going to spend all of Friday with Kyle, before he heads over to Alex and Michael’s for Saturday and Sunday.
“Yeah, sometime Saturday, I’ll text you,” Alex responds.
“Okay. I’m out. Night.” Kyle walks outside to the sound of byes from them and smiles as he feels his phone vibrating.
“Hey,” Kyle says quietly as he answers.
“Hey,” Greg says just as softly.
“I wish you were coming tonight,” Kyle admits as he gets in his car to head home.
“Where are you?” Greg asks and Kyle frowns.
“Turning onto my street, why?”
“You’ll see.”
Kyle pulls into his driveway with a smile at the familiar truck and the lone figure sitting on his front steps.
“Surprised?” Greg asks as Kyle walks up to him and hugs him.
“Yes, I would’ve been home earlier had I known,” Kyle mumbles into Greg’s neck.
“I like this better.”
“Yeah?” Kyle leans back to look at Greg’s face and then kisses him.
They haven’t seen each other in a month and Kyle has missed him.
Greg moans quietly as Kyle pushes him into the front door. When Greg’s back hits the door Kyle sweeps his tongue into Greg’s mouth.
They break apart when the need to breathe becomes apparent and Kyle smiles against Greg’s mouth.
“We should take this inside,” Kyle whispers and feels Greg nod as they separate and Greg grabs his small bag.
Kyle doesn’t think he’ll ever get used to seeing Greg be at home in his home.
He also can’t believe that when he decided to take a chance six months ago that it would lead to this.
Greg was visiting Alex and Michael and hadn’t wanted to watch them make heart eyes at each other all night so he saddled up to Kyle at the bar and they lost hours talking. About their regrets, their wants, their dreams.
The best part was when it ended with Kyle smiling in the morning with Greg curled around him, matching expressions of peace on both of their faces.
“How was the drive?” Kyle asks as Greg sets his bag down by the dresser.
“Wasn’t bad.” Greg sits next to Kyle on the bed and Kyle leans into him.
How is it that he’s touch starved after only a month?
“I’m glad you’re here, and that I get you all to myself tomorrow,” Kyle chuckles and then moans when Greg cuts him off with a kiss.
“A month is too long,” Greg mumbles when they break apart and Kyle sighs as they shed their clothes to get ready for bed.
“We have talked about this.” Kyle reminds him as he pulls Greg closer to him. Greg moves willingly, until they’re so close that their noses touch.
“I know.” Greg sighs and Kyle kisses him. There’s no reason to keep bringing up the conversation of Greg moving back to Roswell when they’re finally in bed together.
Kyle pulls Greg impossibly closer and loses himself in kisses, glad he doesn’t have to spend another night alone with just a phone call.
~~~
“Well this is unexpected.”
Kyle groans slowly at what sounds like Alex as Greg shoots awake next to him.
“Shit,” Greg swears and Kyle slowly opens his eyes.
He’s met with a grimace on Alex’s face and a smirk on Michael’s. The little shit actually waves.
“Damn, Doc, you - ”
“Michael,” Alex says sharply and Michael grins with his teeth.
Kyle thinks Alex’s face is more to do with Greg being naked with no covers since Kyle stole them, then the two of them actually in bed together.
But, he’d rather find out fully clothed so he throws covers over to Greg and Alex chuckles.
“We’ll make breakfast.” Michael turns to leave and Kyle shakes his head as Alex follows.
“Alex cooks?” Greg asks and Kyle stares in horror.
“God no. Michael cooks. Don’t you pay attention when you’re at their place?” Kyle asks laughing.
“Michael just pushes me out of the kitchen so I just assumed they made out and pulled out food they ordered.”
“Well they probably were making out but Michael’s a pretty good cook.” Kyle leans over and kisses Greg good morning.
“Hi,” Greg breathes into his mouth, morning breath be damned.
“Hi,” Kyle responds. “Are you okay with them knowing?”
“Well I think they already know.” Greg smirks and Kyle kisses him again.
“Not what I meant.” Kyle rolls to get out of bed and Greg grabs his wrist.
“I know. I’m...okay, actually. I wanted to tell Alex. I didn’t necessarily want him to find me in bed, naked, but I wanted to tell him.”
Kyle nods. “I did, too. I...wasn’t the greatest person to him when we were younger...I - ”
“Hey. I know, I know. And you’ve grown from then and you and Alex have worked it out. You coming out to him isn’t going to change that.”
“I know.” Kyle smiles and leans down to kiss Greg and then stands to get some clothes.
“Now you dating his brother on the other hand…” Greg smirks and Kyle shoves at him.
“Get dressed,” Kyle laughs.
When they finally make it into the kitchen Michael is making what looks like omelets and Alex is sitting on the counter with coffee. He nods his head toward the coffee maker and Kyle busies himself with making a cup for himself and Greg.
“So…” Alex says smugly. “I take it Greg’s been the one you’ve been seeing?”
Kyle knows he’s blushing and Greg isn’t faring much better but he answers anyways.
“Yeah, for about six months.”
Michael’s mouth drops open and Alex just stares incredulously.
“Oh?” Alex asks after a moment.
Kyle and Greg sip their coffee as they sit at the counter.
“We were...working up to it,” Kyle says quietly and Alex nods but not before Greg also chimes in.
“I was waiting for the offer.”
“Offer?”
“What offer?”
“Greg?” Kyle asks as Alex and Michael’s questions go unanswered.
“At New Roswell Elementary. I got the offer yesterday to teach first grade.”
“Wait, really?” Kyle can’t believe it.
“Yeah. I was gonna tell you today.” Greg looks at Alex and Michael and while Alex looks sheepish, Michael just snorts.
“You’re actually moving here?”
“Well...that’s the plan,” Greg says cheekily. “But I will need a place to live.”
“Yes.” Kyle surges forward and grabs Greg’s face as he kisses him.
He can vaguely hear Michael say, “He definitely didn’t ask that.”
But Kyle doesn’t care. “Are you sure?” He whispers to Greg when they pull apart.
“Absolutely. I love you, Kyle.”
Kyle beams at Greg and kisses him again.
“I love you, too.”
Kyle Valenti Appreciation Week [Day 1]
“It’s a lot bigger than I thought it’d be,” Alex said, and Kyle smiled.
He’d spent weeks preparing to go to this doctor’s convention in Albuquerque alone, wondering just how many old men in lab coats he would be forced to listen to discuss the importance of the work they’d done at their bigger, fancier hospitals. Then, on the morning he was getting ready to go, Alex showed up at his doorstep with a backpack and a smirk.
“Ready to go?”
Kyle was more than a little grateful. He’d thrown his arms around Alex’s shoulders, making him laugh. The beautiful sound was a good start to what was already beginning to look like a more bearable trip.
So now they stood before a giant hotel that Kyle was sure was bigger than Roswell’s hospital, ready for five days of lectures and – hopefully – one too many martinis to get through it.
“Do not leave me alone with these people,” he muttered as the automatic doors let them in, and the cold air conditioning slapped their faces.
Alex scoffed. “If you hate coming to these things so much, why do you? Couldn’t you just take a sick day or something?”
“I’m a doctor,” Kyle said miserably. “I’m legally not allowed to be sick.” He mustered a smile as he checked into his room.
“Oh!” the receptionist smiled at the two of them. Kyle guessed she rarely saw anyone under the age of seventy at one of these things. “Your reservation doesn’t mention a plus-one. I can update you from the two double-sized bedroom to the single king-size, if you want.”
Kyle glanced at Alex with wide eyes, and was glad to see he wasn’t the only one blushing. Then a ping caught Alex’s attention and he pulled out his phone.
“Uh – we’re just friends,” Kyle stammered. “We’re not – I mean, he wouldn’t – he is way out of my league –”
“No,” Alex cut him off, pocketing his phone and smiling politely, if not a little uncomfortably, at the receptionist. “We’re good with the two-bedroom, thanks.”
Kyle swallowed and nodded, handing in his doctor’s badge and trying (and failing) not to look to Alex every so often, who was doing a great job of avoiding Kyle’s gaze completely. Was it really that bad for people to think they were together? He knew Alex was amazing, he knew he’d made mistakes himself when they were teenagers, but he’d hoped that they’d grown past that. That when someone asked if they were in love, they could laugh it off and take it as a complement.
Kyle wondered if it was normal to want people to assume you were dating your best friend, then realized he was being spoken to.
“Thirteenth floor, room 1369,” she said, still looking from Kyle to Alex and back as if too in love to know who to properly stare at.
“Great,” Kyle said, eager to go. “Thank you.”
They got onto the elevator with one old woman in the corner who was busying herself with pinning her badge on her lab coat.
“Forty seconds,” he muttered to Alex who huffed a chuckle. “We’ve been here forty seconds, and I already wish I was dead. Ironic, considering we’re surrounded by doctors.”
“Relax,” Alex said distractedly, and Kyle just realized how close he was. “You said the first lecture isn’t until tonight, right? So we’ll get to the room, and you can rest up until then.”
Kyle swallowed. Alex’s breath was warm on the shell of his ear. Was that normal? To like Alex’s breath against his skin? To want to lean back into him to feel more of it?
He shook his head, shutting his eyes tight. He was exhausted, and being ridiculous. He didn’t want to lean back into Alex – seriously, what was wrong with him today?
Once they’d reached the tenth floor, the old woman stepped off, and Kyle and Alex were alone. He looked down at his shoes, feigning nonchalance. “Can you believe that receptionist thought we were together?”
He shrugged a shoulder. “It’s not that hard to believe.”
“Still,” Kyle said, “I’m sorry if it made you uncomfortable.”
Alex frowned. “Kyle, I’m not –”
Bing!
The doors opened to the thirteenth floor, and Kyle nudged his chin. “That’s us.”
They stepped off and down the carpeted corridor to their room. Kyle used his pass to let them in, and Alex let out a low whistle at the sight. It was a suite, it had to be. The door opened to a large sitting room with Victorian-esque furniture splayed around and flower vases on small wooden tables. There was a large-screen TV hanging on the wall and a small kitchen on the far right, reminding them that they hadn’t, in fact, been transported to the eighteenth century.
“Wow,” Alex murmured, checking the room on the left. “The beds are in here!” he called. “So’s the bathroom.”
“Great,” Kyle said, “because I need a shower to wash off the convention from my skin.”
Alex smiled, and Kyle tried not to think of the pride that bloomed in his chest at the sight of it.
As he rummaged for a pair of underwear and pajamas from his suitcase, Alex got another ping on his phone. Kyle threw glances at him, and noticed that his smile dimmed before he’d even pulled it out of his pocket.
Without responding, he clicked it off and tossed it on the bed.
“Everything okay?”
Alex hummed, mustering a smile that Kyle had learned long ago meant that he was bothered and trying not to fall into his own mess of thoughts.
“Hey,” Alex said. “I heard about this cool burger place, just down the street. You want to clean up and go?”
He groaned. “I’m so in love with you, please don’t ever leave me.”
Alex laughed, his cheeks red. He plopped down on his bed, arms outstretched. His shirt had ridden up his stomach, and Kyle’s eyes lingered on the tanned patch of naked skin. Alex’s eyes were closed, and he raised his hands to fold under his head, bringing his shirt up more.
If Kyle asked, would Alex let him touch him there? Would he let Kyle run his hand across his stomach, maybe higher up his shirt? Kyle imagined just lying down beside Alex, Alex looking at him with dark, hungry eyes. Alex reaching up to cup his jaw, caress his cheek, lean in with an open mouth and eager hands. What would Alex do, he wondered, if he just lied beside him and told him; Do whatever you want, I want you to.
“I don’t know why you complain about these things,” Alex said, yanking Kyle out of his thoughts. “A whole week away from work with a fancy hotel room sounds pretty good after Roswell.”
“It’s fancy this year,” Kyle said indignant, feeling a weird swell of shame in his chest. Not for the first time, Kyle was glad Alex didn’t have Isobel’s mind-reading powers. “You weren’t here when they put us in motels.”
“We could’ve had fun in a motel.”
“It’s a motel,” Kyle deadpanned. “There only thing you can do there for fun is . . .”
Alex raised a brow. “Have sex?”
Heat rose to the tips of Kyle’s ears and he cleared his throat. “Could you imagine . . . if – if we’d been there . . . together? Last year?”
Alex said nothing for a long while, and Kyle didn’t dare look at him. Then he heard Alex sit up in bed.
“Kyle –” he started, his voice strange, then –
Ping!
Alex turned silent, and Kyle looked over at him to see him focused on his phone, his finger hovering over the screen. Finally, Alex swallowed and pocketed it.
“You okay?”
Alex slid off the bed. “Yeah. I’ll go ask what time the meals are in this place,” he said. “You should get cleaned up.”
He patted Kyle’s shoulder twice on his way out, and Kyle watched him leave. The second he was out the door, Kyle threw his face into his pillow and cursed himself.
What had he said? What had he been thinking?! Alex was going to think he was hitting on him, pushing himself on his gay friend because he was bored!
“Idiot!” he yelled, his voice muffled. “What were you thinking, what’s wrong with you?!”
The empty hotel room didn’t respond.
As they sat over their burgers and fries, Kyle thought Alex was unusually quiet. Every time he tried to make him laugh, Alex would get a call or text, and his smile would instantly fall away.
“I’m really glad you’re here,” he tried. “There’s no way I could’ve made it through this week without you.”
“Week hasn’t started yet,” Alex reminded him, rational and calculating as always. Kyle smiled to himself.
“Why’d you decide to come anyway?”
Alex folded his arms on the table and sighed. He looked a lot more tired than he had that morning, but he smiled, nonetheless. “I didn’t want you to be alone.”
Kyle’s heart fluttered in his chest. “Alex –”
Ping!
Alex shut his away, his smile faded. “Sorry, just – just one second.” He pulled out his phone, checked the message on the screen with furrowed brows, seemed to hesitate about something, then swiped across his screen and fell silent again.
It was when they were nursing their milkshakes, Alex mindlessly swirling a fry in his, that Kyle couldn’t take it anymore.
“Okay,” he finally said, “what’s going on with you? I’m the one that’s supposed to be miserable on this trip, remember?”
Alex blinked. “Nothing’s going on.”
“Alex,” Kyle said. “It’s me.”
Alex said nothing a moment, then another text came, and he all but flinched. Kyle frowned. There was only one person who could give Alex that kind of reaction.
His shoulders fell. “It’s Guerin, isn’t it?” he said. “He’s the one that’s been calling nonstop.”
Alex shut his eyes and sighed. He ran a hand through his hair, and said, “I don’t know why I can’t talk to him. Not now, I –” he pinched the bridge of his nose. “I thought I could get over . . . the whole thing with Maria, but I . . . I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
He shook his head, and managed a smile. “Because I don’t understand what’s happening either. I don’t get why it’s suddenly . . . bothering me so much. And because this trip isn’t about that. This is about you, so let’s just table Guerin until some of this starts to make more sense, okay?”
Kyle stared. He’d spent years watching Alex put his own feelings aside because everyone else was just that much more important. He’d seen Alex ignore his own tears so he could wipe away Kyle’s, he’d seen him bleed for Michael over and over.
“You know,” he said, “back in high school, when I first started to become someone I’m not proud of –”
Alex frowned. “What – why are you bringing that up now?”
“You didn’t hate me for it at first,” Kyle went on. “Even when I didn’t invite you to parties, even when I told people that I didn’t really know you, even when . . . when I called you things behind your back –”
“Stop,” Alex shut his eyes, “I don’t want to talk about that.”
“You have to,” Kyle insisted, leaning in and taking Alex’s hand. “Because even after all of that, you wanted to see the good in me, and only the good. And then, when I stopped talking behind your back, and said all that messed up crap to your face, then you started to get angry. You put me in my place, every time. You give people chances, Alex. That doesn’t mean you don’t know how to punish them.”
Alex stared at his milkshake. “What’s your point?”
“That I got mine,” he said, and shrugged a shoulder, smiling. “And Guerin’s about to get his. It’s okay, Alex. You’re okay.”
Alex stared at him a long while, then a smile tugged at his lips. “You were wrong, you know,” he said softly. “You’re the one that’s out of my league.”
Kyle blinked, and realized he’d leaned in impossibly close. He cleared his throat, sitting back, his face inexplicably warm.
“Manes,” he murmured, shaking his head. “This’ll be one hell of a week.”
As he watched Alex bite his lower lip to keep his smile from widening, his face a cute shade of pink, he realized this trip might not be as bad as he’d thought.
roswell’s one braincell: push and pull
[~540 words] [teen and up audiences] [unbeta’ed] [kyle valenti] [past abuse, past bully!kyle, redemption arc, angst] [written for @kylevalentiweek2021, day 4 ~ roswell’s (1) braincell: wisdom advice and redemption + angst + hurt/comfort + “too afraid to love you”]
[losing alex manes is solely his fault]
roswell’s one braincell: push and pull | on ao3
Kyle is fifteen when he pushes his best friend away in order to keep his own status at school — he still wants to be the most popular guy, he still wants to ask Liz Ortecho out — and if he’s seen with Alex Manes everything he’s ever worked so hard for will be turned to dust.
Alex Manes is well known for being different, and Kyle himself is responsible for telling everyone who’s willing to hear all about the secret that his former best friend told him when they were both thirteen. Kyle doesn’t want to be associated with the gay he’s yanked out of the closet.
Kyle is seventeen when all ties with Alex are severed by some ill-aimed teasing and a well-landed punch during their senior prom. He watches as everything he’s worked so hard for — his girlfriend, his reputation — crumbles around him as Liz takes off after Alex.
Alex Manes has taken so much from him — even the love of his family, as Kyle’s seen his own father shielding Alex from the wrath of Jesse Manes more than once — that it just feels fitting for him to snatch the last shreds of happiness Kyle had in his life.
Kyle is twenty-four when his father dies and he learns that the hunting cabin where they used to spend their summers has been left to Alex Manes. He doesn’t even flinch — he already knew that his father had a soft spot for Alex, and in the six years since high school ended he’s learned to accept that his past has led him to be the man he is today. He’s still regretful and ashamed of his actions, but there’s nothing he can do now.
Alex Manes has long since stepped out of his life — he pretty much kicked his best friend out — and he’s now just an estranged memory in Kyle’s past. He never gets to apologize for his teenager’s fever, for the pain he caused and the grief he’s to blame for.
Kyle is twenty-six when the news break across the state, reaching Roswell and spreading like wildfire. It’s the only thing the nurses talk about at their station, the only topic for doctors during their coffee breaks, the only question paramedics ask him when he greets them at the emergency bay. Local hero Alex Manes has been reported MIA in Iraq, and Kyle can only drag himself to the tiny chapel in Roswell Community Medical.
He drops to his knees and prays for the first time since his father passed away, hands brought together in desperation and guilt, as he mutters, “I wish I’d have been brave enough, Alex, I wish things had been different, and it’s all my fault, it’s all my fault, I was too afraid to love you for you, brother,” over and over and over until his throat aches from crying.
Kyle is twenty-eight when he sees Alex Manes back in Roswell, not unscathed but definitely alive, and he takes that first step towards rebuilding a friendship that he isn’t sure might ever be revived. But he tries. And he tries. And he tries.
He will never give up on Alex Manes.
Fic || Doesn't Work That Way For Me (Kyle/Max)
In honor of Kyle Valenti Week 2021, here's some fic where Kyle and Demisexual! Max have occasion to make out for Day 3!
“Thought you could use this.”
Kyle sets the six pack down on the arm of one of Max’s wooden patio chairs, boots crunching on the gravel. Max flicks a glance at him and goes back to staring at the fire.
“Thought doctors were supposed to advise against drinking.” He mutters, the light of the fire pit flickering on his face.
“Strictly medicinal,” Kyle says, gesturing wide with hands shoved in the pockets of his jacket. “Doctor’s orders, even. Though I should advise you not to drink alone.”
“That mean you’re going to stay and help me drink them?” Max still doesn’t look away from the fire.
“That an invitation?” Kyle asks.
Kyle Valenti Appreciation Week [Day 7]
Kyle woke this time to Alex tracing small circles on his back. He smiled into his pillow.
Alex is in my bed, he thought. Alex was in his bed, naked, trailing his fingers lower down his spine, settling in the small of his back. Then his lips followed the path of his fingers, soft and open-mouthed and warm, and Kyle moaned.
“Awake?” Alex breathed against the shell of his ear, his voice deep and sending shivers down Kyle’s body.
“Don’t stop,” he pleaded. “Please, Alex, don’t stop.”
Alex bit his earlobe, and Kyle instinctively turned over. Alex moved to hover over him the second he was on his back, and Kyle automatically bucked his hips up into him. Alex huffed a breathy chuckle, biting his lower lip.
“Wasn’t planning on it,” he said, taking Kyle in hand and aligning himself. When he sank down, Kyle arched his back, his mouth hanging open.
“You’re so sexy,” Alex murmured, running his hands down the length of Kyle’s chest, his stomach, as he rose and fell on his cock.
“Alex,” Kyle breathed, planting both feet on the mattress and thrusting up in time to match Alex’s movements.
They came twice that morning, and Kyle was still kissing Alex’s shoulder, his arm, his back, as the airman reached for his crutches and stepped out of bed.
“How many more speeches do you have left today?” he asked as he looked for a towel for his shower.
Kyle, who had been watching him reverently, felt his heart suddenly sink into his stomach at the realization. “None. We’re checking out today. Early.”
Alex stopped rummaging, and looked over his shoulder at him. “How early?”
He checked the time on his phone, and swallowed the lump in his throat. “We have one hour.”
Alex said nothing for a moment, and Kyle sat up. When he’d asked Alex to wait until today to make his decision, he’d been vague. Would Alex decide now, or would he wait till they actually had to be out of the hotel?
“You coming?” Alex suddenly asked as he made his way to the bathroom. He stopped at the doorway and smirked over his shoulder. “Or are you going to leave me to shower alone?”
Kyle’s heart thrashed, and he nearly stumbled on his way out of bed. Alex’s laugh was silenced as Kyle covered his mouth with his own, and pushed them both into the bathroom.
Kyle and Alex sat on the couch in the reception room, Alex’s head on Kyle’s shoulder, as they waited for their turn to check out. Admittedly, Kyle was letting everyone, doctor or not, cut in front of them first.
Alex’s hand was in Kyle’s, and he squeezed it. He turned to press his lips to Alex’s forehead, watching the way his eyes fluttered sleepily, and he thought he could do this forever. He could have Alex like this, just the two of them, in comfortable, silent peace. Of course, it would never be just the two of them, that was what Alex had tried to tell him, that was why he’d stayed away. There would always be someone there alongside Kyle in Alex’s heart, someone who would always own the very essence of him. And it wasn’t Kyle.
Kyle inhaled Alex’s scent and sighed deeply. Alex’s eyes closed to the warmth. That was the thing though; he didn’t care. He knew Alex, at his core, would always be Michael’s, but he loved Kyle, too. He loved holding Kyle’s hand and kissing him and falling asleep beside him. The thought and possibility of Michael would always hurt Alex, but how could it not, after everything they’d been through? Why should that mean that Kyle and Alex shouldn’t be allowed to have each other? That they shouldn’t be able to fall in love, in their own way?
“Alex . . .”
“Mm?”
“You know I’m always going to love you, right?” he said. “No matter what.”
Alex said nothing, but squeezed his hand harder.
When the time for checkout finally came, Kyle’s heart felt heavy. He kept glancing over at Alex who was by the aquarium, watching the fish.
“He’s very handsome,” the receptionist said, having noticed his stares.
A small, faint smile tugged at Kyle’s lips. “Isn’t he?”
When they stepped outside, the air just as cold as in, Kyle reached instinctively for Alex’s hand. Alex did the same, smiling.
Okay, Kyle thought. So they still had some time left on the clock. Instead of taking Alex to the car, he pulled him into a shadowy corner behind the hotel, pushed him against the wall, and kissed him. Alex, to his relief, only pulled him in deeper.
“We can’t,” he panted, laughing, when Kyle reached down to the buttons of his jeans. “Come on, doctor, cool down.”
As Alex led the way back to the car, Kyle tried not to tell him that he couldn’t keep himself back. These were their last few moments together, and as soon as they were back in Roswell . . .
Nonetheless, Alex looked ready to leave the hotel, so Kyle had no choice but to follow. They drove for a while, Kyle staring at Alex whenever he got the chance. When the Roswell sign came into sight, he pulled over.
They sat in silence for a good few minutes. Alex didn’t rush him or demand to know why he’d stopped, but instead just waited.
“Yesterday was the best day of my life,” Kyle started, no sound but them around for miles. “Alex, I love you. I think I’ve always loved you, I just . . . never knew it. But I do now.” He turned in his seat to face him. “And I know you love Guerin. I know part of you will always love him, but . . . part of you loves me, too, I know it. I can feel it.”
He took Alex’s hands in his. “I don’t care that I can’t have every piece of you, because what I do get is so . . .” he huffed a chuckle. “It’s so good. You’re better than enough for me, Alex, and I don’t want to go back home without you knowing that.”
Alex stared at him a long time, his expression unreadable. Then, with glassy eyes, he smiled. “Okay,” he said softly.
Kyle’s heart thudded painfully. “O-Okay?”
He nodded. “Okay.” He leaned in, gently taking Kyle’s lips in his own. He whispered, their lips brushing together, “You and me, right?”
Kyle started to smile, relief and joy and love filling his chest and threatening to overflow.
“You and me,” he promised.
on call: dr. valenti
[200 words] [teen and up audiences] [unbeta’ed] [kyle valenti] [mentions of character’s death as per canon] [written for @kylevalentiweek2021, day 1 ~ on call: dr. valenti + pov kyle valenti + “i got mine”]
[whenever he feels down, he always thinks of coming back home]
on call: dr. valenti | on ao3
It takes a while to get used to the fact that he’s now the one wearing a white lab coat. It takes a while for people to warm up to him. Whenever he feels down — whenever something bad happens during a shift — he drives back all the way from Carlsbad to visit his father.
His father, who told him to always chase his dreams.
“I got my wish, Kyle,” he’d say. “Now it’s your turn to make yours.”
At the time, Kyle hadn’t understood how his father could sound so happy while he was slowly withering away, but so many years later, he finally gets it.
He finally understands that a wish isn’t something that’s out of reach — a wish isn’t hoping for a cure to something that’s incurable.
A wish is finding his place in the world — it is finding his purpose.
“I got mine, too,” he tells, a smile on his face, before standing up. “I got mine, Dad, and I think you’d be proud of me.”
He’s used to the silence, now, but sometimes he wishes he could get a response. The breeze whistling around him tells him that his father might, indeed, be proud of him.
