Tens of thousands of NFTs that were once deemed the newest rage in tech and dragged in celebrities, artists and even Melania Trump have now been declared virtually worthless.
According to a new report by dappGambl that reviewed data from NFT Scan and CoinMarketCap, 69,795 out of 73,257 NFT collections have a market cap of 0 Ether, leaving 95% of those holding NFT collections – or 23 million people – with worthless investments.
…
The study also analyzed the costly environmental impact surrounding the minting process of NFTs. Researchers identified 195,699 NFT collections with no apparent owners or market share and found that the energy required to mint the NFTs was comparable to 27,789,258 kWh, resulting in an emission of approximately 16,243 metric tons of CO2.
To put the staggering number into context, the report revealed that 16,243 metric tons of CO2 is equivalent to the yearly emissions of 2,048 homes. It is also equivalent to the yearly emissions of 3,531 cars or the carbon footprint of 4,061 passengers flying from London to Wellington, New Zealand.
In addition, the report revealed that the number of dead NFTs could even be higher.
“MacContract on Ethereum has a floor price of $13,234,204.2, but its all-time sales is only $18,” the report said, adding: “This stark discrepancy between listed floor prices and actual sales data exposes a significant issue in the NFT market – inflated valuations that don’t reflect genuine buyer interest or real-world transactions.

Thousands of NFTs that were previously considered the newest craze in technology and attracted celebrities, artists, and even Melania Trump have now been rated almost useless. 69,795 out of 73,257 NFT collections have a market cap of zero ether, according to a recent research by dappGambl that examined data from NFT Scan and CoinMarketCap, leaving 95% of those who possess NFT collections, or 23 million people, with worthless investments. To verify ownership and authenticity of a digital resource, such as a picture, video, or text, NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are a type of crypto asset. The allegation comes almost two years after the NFT craze swept over artists and celebrities alike, with many flocking to buy NFT collections of the Matrix and Bored Ape Yacht Club avatars. The cryptocurrency entrepreneur Sina Estavi garnered media attention in March 2021 when he paid $2.9 million for an NFT of the first tweet sent by the former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. A limited edition digital artwork of the former first lady's eyes was part of the Melania's Vision NFT collection, which she introduced in December 2021. According to the analysis, the sharply downward market change surrounding these crypto assets highlights the importance of conducting comprehensive due diligence before making any transactions, especially ones that have a large value. This terrifying fact ought to act as a sobering check on the exuberance that has frequently accompanied the NFT realm. It is simple to miss the fact that the market is rife with traps and potential losses amid tales of digital art pieces fetching millions of dollars and overnight successes, it added. According to the report, 79% of all NFT collections are still unsold since there is not enough demand in the "highly speculative and volatile market" to offset the supply. Researchers from dappGambl examined the top 8,850 NFT collections listed by CoinMarketCap to analyse the current situation of the most valuable NFT assets. They discovered that 18% of these best-selling collections had a floor price of zero, making them essentially worthless. According to the survey, 41% of the top collections had prices between $5 and $100, which would indicate that there isn't much value associated to these assets. A sharp contrast to the million-dollar deals that dominated a $22 billion market in 2021, less than 1% of the collections were valued at more than $6,000. The study also looked at the costly environmental impact of the NFT minting procedure. Researchers discovered 195,699 NFT collections with no obvious owners or market share and discovered that the energy necessary to mint the NFTs was equivalent to 27,789,258 kWh, leading in a release of about 16,243 metric tons of CO2. To put the startling figure into perspective, the analysis indicated that 16,243 metric tons of CO2 is equal to the annual emissions of 2,048 households. It is also the equivalent of 3,531 cars' annual emissions or the carbon footprint of 4,061 passengers travelling from London to Wellington, New Zealand. The research also indicated that there may be an even greater number of dead NFTs. According to the report, MacContract on Ethereum has a floor price of $13,234,204.2 but its all-time sales are only $18. This stark disparity between listed floor prices and actual sales data exposes a significant problem in the NFT market - inflated valuations that don't reflect genuine buyer interest or real-world transactions. It becomes evident that a sizeable chunk of the NFT market is characterized by speculative and hopeful pricing tactics that are wildly out of sync with the real trading history of these assets, the company added. NFTs still have a place in the future, according to dappGambl experts, despite the NFT market's instability. According to the paper, NFTs must either be historically significant, like first-edition Pokémon cards, true art, or offer genuine utility in order to endure market downturns and maintain their worth.

I’m all for expanding our zero emissions fleet but I can’t imagine calculating kWhs charged per bus for even more buses, totally sucks up my whole morning.
Everything is done manually, we don’t have use sharepoint, everything is via email or phone call. They fuel the buses in the middle of the night and write down everything on a log book that then gets scanned to the analyst and me in the morning. Sometimes their numbers don’t make sense and we log onto the vehicle performance management system online to figure out at exactly what time the buses reached full charge ...so imagine my surprise when I see one of the BEBs (battery electric buses) is missing and didn’t complete it’s full charge cycle.
like oh where did this 40 foot bus magically disappear to 🤔 why would they pull the bus in the middle of the night

Gauging Andhra Pradesh’s EV Scooter Market
Electric vehicles are no longer just a buzz word but a slowly changing reality in today’s two wheeler market. Albeit still minuscule in comparison to the sales of combustion vehicles they are steadily catching the attention of consumers.
The two wheeler segment as one would expect is seeing a much quicker and early adoption in the EV space. This coupled with the government of India’s recent subsidy increase under the FAME II scheme has further incentivised consumers to look more keenly to this greener mode of transportation.
FAME which stands for Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and EV is a GoI’s plan to inculcate a greater degree of adoption of EVs in India.
Introduced in April 2019 with a budget outlay of Rs 10,000 crore it was to support 7,000 e-buses, 5,00,000 e-three-wheelers, 55,000 e-passenger vehicles and a million e-two-wheelers. The government of India recently extended the scheme till March 2024 and more importantly increased the benefit offered from Rs 10,000 per kWh to Rs 15,000 per kWh thereby marking a hike of 50 percent.
State governments too are jumping in and bringing out their own state specific schemes and benefits to motivate customers switch to the EV bandwagon. The state of Andhra Pradesh too is in the process of getting out a new EV policy.
So with all the incentives and policies being offered we at Vizag Industrial Scan spoke to some of the key players in this market to get an overall idea of the two wheeler EV segment in AP.
‘I believe that the EV market is here to stay and has a vibrant future’ said Mr Shyam Prasad of Sree Prasad Motors, a dealer of Hero EVs in the city.
In fact with zooming gasoline prices there couldn’t be a better reason to switch to EVs.
Agrees Mr Nallamilli Venkata Reddy founder and CEO of Vihaan Electrix a dealer of Pure EV and says ‘At the current market price (of fuel) an EV owner can save about Rs. 1 lakh over a 3 year period’.
There is no denying that consumer interests are certainly translating into sales. ‘We on an average get 250 + inquiries a month’ said Mr Venkata.
Pure EV has multiple dealerships across the state and claims to have sold 2300 vehicles between Jan 2021 and September 1st week.
EV scooters prices typically range from approximately Rs 60,000 to 150,000 and come with a 3 year warranty.
Mr Sudhakar Nagalapati of SN Auto a dealer of the Ather EV brand reiterates growing consumer interest and demand. ‘Just from a single branch we are clocking sales of 200 vehicles a month’
‘Ather as a company on a whole has a production capacity of 1 lakh vehicles a month which can be ramped up to 5 lakhs’ informed Mr Sudhakar.
Although there is no confirmed figure of the total two wheeler EV sales in AP, industry sources put that number anywhere between 3000 and 4000 per month.
Limited Production
An issue that seems to be hindering sales is limited production from certain OEMs.
‘There is a glaring issue of supply/stocks. OEMs aren’t ready with enough stocks. I can easily sell 150 EV scooters a month if supplied with ample stocks. I already have 170 paid orders for which deliveries have yet to be made’ said Mr Shyam.
Charging Stations
Another issue that is most often talked about in this space is the desperate need of having supporting Infrastructure i.e. Battery charging points. While some EVs are equipped with removable batteries which can be taken to a point for charging others don’t have removable batteries hence the need for fixed charging stations across localities.
‘We have 25 charging stations across the city and are going to ramp this up soon’ said Mr Venkata who owns another company called V Energy which caters to Battery charging infrastructure.
Similarly Mr Sudhakar says that they currently have 6 charging stations in Vizag and that another 14 are on the anvil. Stakeholders also call for uniformity in charging stations. As Mr Shyam puts it ‘As in the case of your petrol vehicle which can be fuelled at any gas station similarly all EV charging stations should be adaptable to any brand of EVs’.
Although still early days for EVs the sector if armed with the right policies and infrastructure is slated to garner a higher market share in the near future. One however needs to wait and watch how quickly would this happen.

This project is mapping every solar panel in the country using machine learning
Renewable energy is the future, but at present no one is tracking just who’s got solar panels on their roof, in their back yard, or a shared neighborhood installation. Fortunately, solar panels generally work best when exposed to the light. That makes them easy to spot, and count, from orbit — which is just what the DeepSolar project is doing.
There are a number of initiatives for collecting this information — some regulated, some voluntary, some automated. But none of them is comprehensive enough or accurate enough to base policy or business decisions on at a national or state level.
Stanford engineers (mechanical and civil, respectively) Arun Majumdar and Ram Rajagopal decided to remedy this with what seems like, in retrospect, rather an obvious solution.
Machine learning systems are great at looking at images and finding objects they’ve been “trained” to recognize, whether it’s cats, faces, or cars… so why not solar panels?
Their team, including grad students Jiafan Yu and Zhecheng Wang, put together an image recognition machine learning agent trained on hundreds of thousands of satellite images. The model learns both to identify the presence of solar panels in an image, and to find the shape and area of those panels.
Having evaluated the model on nearly a hundred thousand other randomly sampled satellite images of the U.S., they found they achieved an accuracy of about 90 percent (slightly more or less depending on how it’s measured), which is well ahead of other models, and it estimated cell size with only about a 3 percent error. (Its main weakness is very small installations, Rajagopal told me, but this is partially due to the limits of the imagery.)
The team then put the model to work chewing through over a billion image tiles covering as much of the lower 48 states as they could find suitable imagery for. That excludes quite a bit of area, but consider that much of that is, for example, mountains. Not a lot of solar installations there, and few people are trying to put up cells in national parks.
All in all it’s about 6 percent of the actual country — but Rajagopal pointed out that urban areas comprise only about 3.5 percent, so this covers all of them and more. He estimated that perhaps perhaps 5 percent of installations are in the areas the system has yet to process (but is working on).
Scanning took a whole month, but at the end the model had found 1.47 million individual solar installations (which could be a few panels on a roof or a whole solar farm). That’s many more than have been counted by other efforts, and the most successful of those didn’t come with the exact location, as DeepSolar’s data does.
Basic plotting of this data produces all kinds of interesting new info. You can compare solar installation density at the state, county, census tract, or even square mile level and compare that to all kinds of other metrics — average sunny days per year, household income, voting preference, and so on.
A couple interesting findings: Only 4 percent of all census tracts (roughly 3,000 out of 75,000) had more than 100 residential-scale solar systems, meaning installations are highly concentrated. Residential solar made up 87 percent of the total installation count, but with a median size of around 25 square meters, only 34 percent of the total solar cell surface area.
Peak deployment density can be found where there are about a thousand people per square mile — think a small town or suburb, not a major city. And there’s a sort of inflection point at which people start installing: when an area receives more than 4.5 kWh per square meter per day of solar radiation. How that corresponds to weather, location, exposure and so on is a more complicated question.
This and other demographics are all good information to know if you want to invest in solar, since they basically tell you where it’s justified or needed.
“We have created and released a website where you can play with the data at the aggregated level (we are keeping it at census tract level) to respect the privacy of consumers,” Rajagopal said. “We are exploring how to make individual detections public while respecting privacy (perhaps by encouraging public participation and crowdsourcing).”
“We decided to share all of the work in open source to encourage others in industry and academia to utilize both the method as well as the data to produce more insights. We feel that changes need to happen fast, and this is one of the ways to aid in that. Perhaps in the future, services can be built around this type of data,” he continued.
Plans are underway to expand the service to the rest of the U.S. and other countries as well. The data is available to peruse here, or here as a map; the team’s paper describing the project was published today in the journal Joule.
