Northern Africa. Like, Sudan or Morocco. But it’s black Africans.
Or in this weird way, I can totally see Syrup Village as being some place in South Africa. Specifically (inspired by the landscape of) Kwa Zulu Natal. But I’m probably reaching pretty high. So, head-canon it is.
His mom is Italian, probably. (But I’m okay with any headcanon regarding her).

The word Zulu means "Sky" and IsiZulu is South Africa's 🇿🇦 most widely spoken official language. Zulu people refer to themselves as 'the people of the heavens' and they are the largest ethnic group of South Africa, with an estimated 11 million Zulu residents in KwaZulu-Natal. The largest urban concentration of Zulu people is in the Gauteng Province, and in the corridor of Pietermaritzburg and Durban. The largest rural concentration of Zulu people is in Kwa-Zulu Natal. In the 19th century, they merged into a great kingdom under the leadership of Shaka Zulu.

on Sunday, I went to an art exhibition in a backroom in Midrand...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
one of my friends arranged for us to attend a small showing of the Bark//Please exhibition held at the Backroom SCAM (Studio for Creative Arts in Midrand) and we had an inspirational afternoon. what I expected to be an impersonal hour or so at an underwhelming typical gallery turned out to be something quite different. One of the big reasons for this is the Studio is a backroom that has been converted into a gallery and studio space - I wasn't sure I'd come to the right place when I stood outside what appeared to be someone's house in a residential suburb.
we had made an appointment to view the art which was a concession to the space's capacity limitations that has been turned into a strength. it felt intimate to be guided through in a story in a little group. Lesiba Mabitsela, the gallery owner, presented a lot of information about the barkcloth exhibit and our handful had an interesting discussion touching on fashion, geopolitics, and history for about an hour.
after the appointed hour of barkcloth appreciation, my friend and I sat in Lesiba's backyard and chatted his ears off. We made our way into his storage and work space to get a private view of upcoming projects and made him promise to invite us back whenever the gallery has more events. It felt like making a very special memory to have this kind of experience, particularly in an area that doesn't have a developed commercial art scene.
I linked a bit of information below about the show and its inspirations - the Issey Miyake connection made my heart soft and I told Lesiba about my mother and my shared love of his design philosophy. I put a little section on abaca too because I was reminded of Dolly De Leon wearing Rajo Laurel at the Baftas.

"The exhibition showcases some early encounters, thought-processes and creative explorations between Ugandan visual artists Sheila Nakitende ( @sheila.nakitende ) and Liz Kobusinge ( @kobusinge ), including South African fashion practitioners Lesiba Mabitsela ( @souvenirs_of_conflict ) and Thabiso Ncanana ( @thabiso.ncanana ) in their explorations of bark, barkcloth and barkcloth papermaking in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. The exhibition comprises gifts and process work materialised during the Pan-African Research Residency (2023) that was facilitated by the African Fashion Research Institute (AFRI) ( @afri.digital ) in partnership with Creative Nestlings Foundation ( @creativenestlings ) as part of The Fold, a fashion research initiative supported by the British Council ( @britishcouncil )."

"Issey Miyake’s essential touchstone has been the concept of making clothing from “a Piece of Cloth.” His process explores the fundamental relationship between the body, the cloth that covers it, and the space and room that is created between these elements, divesting itself of the labels of “East” or “West”. Miyake’s creative process begins by studying a single thread and creating his material, which then leads to new clothing." - IsseyMiyake.com

In 1993, he launched PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE line using the unique “garment pleating” process. The label offered clothing as a product that was easy to wear, to care for and to travel with; practical for all aspects of daily life, comfortable, affordable, and elegant. He continued to pursue avenues through which to create clothing that could suit the needs and lifestyle of a modern woman. - IsseyMiyake.com

#1951 - Agapanthus praecox - Lily of the Nile
Tumblr media
A ridiculously popular ornamental in New Zealand. Predictably, it’s an invasive weed in parts of the country. Also predictably, it’s not a lily and it doesn’t grow along the Nile.
What family it’s actually in is the subject of ongoing debate - as of 2009 it’s in the Amaryllis family. It’s native to the Kwa-Zulu Natal and Western Cape provinces of South Africa, where local names include agapant, bloulelie, isicakathi and uban. The others in the genus are also native to Southern Africa, but the number of subspecies, hybrids, cultivars, and general fuzziness of the species boundaries don’t really help nailing the genus down.
Also naturalised in Australia, and the Isles of Scilly, and reportedly in Madeira, the Canary Islands, Eritrea, Ethiopia, St. Helena, Norfolk Island, Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica and Tristan da Cunha. Still widely used in gardens, parks, and verges, especially in places with a more Mediterranean climate.

Building strong communities: Ensuring healthy mothers and children for a thriving kraal
INTRODUCTION
They say the healthy calf is the one who drinks milk from a healthy cow, to have healthy and prosperous children in our communities we must ensure their mothers are healthy too. This blog elaborates why it is important to ensure mothers and children in our communities are healthy. According to (du Toit, 2012) children who grew up under grandparent’s care or single mothers care are proven to be weaker than the children who grew up under the father care according to research. Since 1948 the World Health Organization (WHO) has been using the same definition of health which is “ HEALTH is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”, this means that in our communities we have to ensure that women and children are in a state of being of complete physical, mental and social well-being in order for our communities to be fruitful and prevent the society problems caused by effects of unhealthy mothers and children. According to (Burgess, 2014), in their study in Kwa-Zulu Natal South Africa, women that were interviewed that had depression or anxiety highlighted that “family conflicts like abandonment by men, community violence, poverty and HIV/AIDS are the most affecting stressors in many women’s lives”. So, the bulls and the oxen must ensure that the cows and the calves are safe and there is no harm caused by the bulls or the oxen which may lead to the suffering of cows or calves as this may lead to unfruitfulness of the kraal.

(Loroniecki, 2023 )
Body
“During pregnancy and 1 year after pregnancy, one in five women experiences maternal mental health (MMH) condition, counting depression, PTSD, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and postpartum psychosis. If nothing is done about these diagnoses it can lead to a long-term adverse health consequence for the mother or the child” Green, 2021. These diagnoses can affect women in different ways, the death of a mother or a baby during birth can occur or the health condition can be a result of complicated pregnancy to the mother or a child. If one person passes away during birth, the one who survived might have depression or other mental health problem (Mother right after birth, a child when growing up without a mother and after knowing what happened during birth). Some people who end up doing the substance abuse in which it may lead to other mental or physical conditions like PTSD, learning difficulties at school, low self-esteem, and depression usually are led by the childhood experiences. Some children can drop off the school due to the mentioned problems and end up using ways of making money that are against the law and that may negatively affect the community as there will be danger in the community due to the harm that may be caused by the illegal ways of making money to buy drugs like “hijacking, stealing, violence and robbing stores”.
Tumblr media
( On Moriorana, 2018)
As the occupational therapy student, I know that in the community I am currently doing my training in there are women who raise their children in a home where there is GBV and child abuse, there are many single mothers who have not enough funds to raise their children, depressed women who are pregnant and there are many drugs and alcohol abusers that do crime in the community. This leads to matter that as occupational therapists we should emphasize the maternal and children mental health in different communities because in the long term that may lead to the community members living in danger due to the mental health problems experienced. The mothers who suffer from mental health problems before and after birth should be attended, as Occupational therapists ensure that they can fulfil their roles, daily occupations and plan their routines in a way that will promote mental health as our aim is to ensure people are able to do what is expected from them and what they want to do in their everyday lives. The children who experience mental or physical health problems in our communities should be attended by occupational therapists and ensure that children are able to access places and engage in occupations they must engage in as expected in their daily activities so that these problems won’t lead to depression, substance use and abuse, low self-esteem, and concentration problems at school. As a growing occupational therapy student, I know and understand that these are parts of my roles, so I should work on trying to deal with the source of what makes the community I am practicing in to be the way it is by helping those I will find, in ensuring the mothers and children have physical, mental and social well-being which means they are healthy.
Tumblr media
(Jain, 2017 )
Conclusion
In the community I am currently practicing in, some of high school male students have raised a matter of experiencing hardship on their growth to manhood due to many fathers who have abandoned their families, and they grow up under the single mother’s care. This has led to the community leaders and social workers to make a campaign on the programme called “Iphi indoda” meaning where the man is. This will be the main topic of the programme that will be held in a community with men listening to different stakeholders in the community including police, teachers, social workers, and the nurses in the clinic about what are the community problems they are facing at work due to male children from the community, since fathers should be molding their male children correctly. In this campaign men will be told what have their children been doing at schools in their ignorance and they must respond with the reasons why they leave all the workload of raising their children with their wives. “In South Africa before the colonization, the community was jointly responsible for raising children, but due to apartheid migrant labor causes, women have been given the work of raising children on their own while men neglect their role as parents” Bradfield, 2021. All in all, the unhealthy and unfruitful kraal can be fixed by the bulls and oxen in ensuring that the cows are not the only ones responsible in nurturing the calves because as much as the calves need cows’ caring and protective love, they also need the bulls’ and oxen’s strict and tough nurturing. Therefore, the calves will get the exact molding that is ideal for the calf to be the type of cow or bull they want to be in the cattle.

New Ceramics from Ardmore for L’Afrika
To celebrate the opening of our new store in Hamburg we at L’Afrika have brought together a superb new collection of Ceramics. From the kilns at Ardmore in the Caversham Valley of Kwa Zulu Natal South Africa come the most brilliantly colourful and most professionally crafted ceramics. These beautiful pieces of art are creations of fantasy that the world renowned Ardmore artists are famous for. These local artists are extraordinary people from the Midlands of Kwa Zulu Natal, who are given training, materials, a studio and a guaranteed market for their work, under the guidance of the founder of Ardmore, Fee Halstead. Buy handmade south african ceramics
The new ceramics brought into Germany by L’Afrika include, the Monkey Whale Rider - a fantasy of a Monkey riding through the ocean waves on the back of a Whale! One of the more exotic pieces is a very bright yellow Banana Bowl with two cute Monkeys sitting on opposite sides and enjoying the contemplation of so many Bananas! Then there is the Zebra Tureen a item of rich painted artwork that is so elegant it will make a statement of luxury and grace in the home, the zebra being the majestic carnival of the bush. The smaller items of the range include the Monkey Spoon rest, a Monkey lazing in repose, and a cheetah coin dish – all items that are so joyful to add to the home. Shop south african ceramics
The absolute ‘piece de resistance’ is the fabulous white pair of candle holders adawned with elephants and palm trees – this is a must see piece and will be a true heirloom and collectors item. The perfection that is the hallmark of Ardmore and the expression of beauty is remarkable in this pair of candleholders of the most beautiful design.

Is this the face of Cape Town?
Could be, depending on who you are! Watched his interview on Bloomberg. Made a very good impression.
youtube
DA (centrist Democratic Alliance) wants to sit with the ‘most chips’ at the negotiations’ table.
‘It would be devastating to have a far-left government of the EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) and a lot should be done to prevent that from happening.
The majority of funding for the DA comes from the three ‘hotly contested’ provinces of Western Cape, Kwa-Zulu Natal and Gauteng, as well as from asset managers and such-like who have business interests in the country.
Tumblr media
‘The business community has seen the benefit of stable, pro-business, investment-oriented government here in the western Cape and so they do support that.
That (support) gets us into a virtuous cycle in which the state here has more resources which can be spent on the poor…We want to spend as much as possible investing in better livelihoods for the poorer communities and for that to happen you have to have investments.’
South Africa is seen as having a crippling 40 Percent unemployment rate. Cape Town is said to be faring better at 20%.
‘Load-shedding’ is a euphemistic term for ‘power cuts’ (which are) a phenomenon of South Africa… Eskom is unable to provide uninterrupted power to the country and Cape Town has been weaning off Eskom’s supply, and while they cannot do it entirely, they can make up on that gap, a 400 megawatt shortfall at peak times, by green power management.
CT can currently make up the shortfall at peak times that allows them to shorten the power cuts by two stages of load-shedding. They currently produce around 200Mw of Green, renewable peak time energy, much of which is bought off of the rooftop solar grids of ordinary consumers.
