for those who haven't, i really welcome y'all to watch Kamen Rider Kuuga. Not only it is a really good entry point to the franchise on virtue of it being the very first Heisei Era series, but also and mostly, and i say this with no hyperbole: it's a show that profoundly changes your life and how you look at it.

A few episodes after I started watching the show and, without even realizing it, I found myself helping people in small ways and replying to their thanks with a "it's OK!" and a thumbs up. Yusuke Godai is such a kind and sensitive soul that not only does he impact people in the show, he also leaves an impact on people watching the show. Fiction does affect reality and Kuuga is the prime example of that.

It is really frustrating to see just how backwards Kamen Rider has slid in its treatment of female characters though like why are you being out done on female characters by a show from 2000 whose main writer was a deeply conservative bootlicker misogynist? Like Kuuga has a wonderful, varied array of women and girls with their own plot lines and complex motivations which further the plot and themes of the story even in ways that have nothing to do with the male main characters.

It doesn't feel like organic writers decisions either, it really reeks of some higher ups at Toei interfering and telling them to focus less on the women because that isn't how the shows are set up. Rinne and Lachesis were both very obviously side lined out of nowhere in favor of Spanner despite them both having really juicy and interesting story lines set up. We know that the head writer didn't want to kill Lachesis off, too. And it is blatantly obvious that the whole "Rinne's ring runs out of juice" thing was a studio mandated contrivance to prevent her from transforming "too often" because she's the SECONDARY RIDER. In any other season "something prevents the secondary rider from transforming at will" would be its own plot line! But in this season its just "well she just can't fight this episode, sorry guys!". I haven't seen Geats but I'd be interested to see how the female characters in that season were handled.

Sachika was established as one of the main three characters of the show but she barely shows up in the episodes now (and I say that as someone who still really enjoys Gavv!) even though it really doesn't make sense with her established character and actions to be this passive. And like I get that they are packing a lot of story into each episode but integrating her into those plot lines would not have been that much of a stretch. Instead they are doing her dirtier than they did Hirose in Blade. At least Hirose was allowed to know what was going on and help the Riders! Put Sachika into the torture nexus!!!! Why is she just sitting at home, twiddling her thumbs????

Kuuga brainrot is real!! So real that i got back on tumblr again lmao. like how could i not enjoy Yusuke and his big dopey thumbs up every time. About halfway through the show, probably won't post again until I finish
