BOUNTIFUL, Utah (KUTV) — After weeks of fighting their health insurance's denial of coverage, the Bateman family from Utah has not only secured a prosthetic arm for their 9-year-old daughter Remi, but has also helped another child receive the same life-changing device.

Remi's mother, Jami Bateman, shared that after their insurance provider Select Health deemed the prosthetic "not medically necessary," the family launched a GoFundMe campaign. The response was overwhelming, with the fundraiser quickly exceeding its goal.

"The GoFundMe got reposted. We exceeded well over the goal," Jami said. "I was contacted by the CEO of CrowdHealth. They decided to pick up the bill and paid for Remi's arm in full. It's just been amazing."

Because the CEO offered to pay for Remi's arm, the Batemans used the funds raised to pay for a boy in Maryland's prosthetic arm.

The viral story didn't just help Remi — her family's campaign also caught the attention of another family with an 8-year-old boy named Taj from Maryland, who will now receive the same "Hero Arm" prosthetic.

"I wasn't able to do this for Taj for Christmas," Taj's mother said, "but thought 'maybe next summer, we'll be able to get [the arm]'."

Jami Bateman hopes their story brings joy to both families.

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - The incident at Tim Dahle Mazda in Sandy was summed up succinctly in an officer's probable cause statement, filed Monday evening hours after suspect Michael Lee Murray, 35, is seen in the video plowing through the front of the dealership before exiting the car and shouting obscenities at the employees.

According to police, Murray had purchased a vehicle from the dealership earlier that day but returned demanding his money back, claiming the car was a "lemon."

No major injuries were initially reported.

The incident caused an estimated $10,000 in damage and forced the dealership to temporarily cease operations.

Murray was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail about two hours after the crash on suspicion of second-degree felony criminal mischief with more than $5,000 worth of property damage, Class A misdemeanor reckless endangerment, and Class A misdemeanor economic interruption.

He was ordered to be released on his own recognisence at 10:15 p.m.

The University of Utah announced they will remove any “diversity questions or statements” from its hiring process for new faculty and staff.

School officials said the decision was made following recent remarks made by Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, who said  he thinks "it’s bordering on evil that we’re forcing people into a political framework before they can even apply for a job in the state.”

A statement was issued on Friday from university president Taylor Randall, which stated "all hiring units at the university should discontinue the use of any type of diversity statements or similar practices as part of their unit-level applicant or employee hiring processes."

As the University of Utah strives for excellence in education, research, patient care, and service to community, we remain steadfast in our belief and actions that we must have a dedicated team of individuals from every walk of life to help us achieve that goal. As we do so, we affirm our commitment to non-discriminatory hiring practices and the wellbeing of our patients and campus community.

In light of recent statements made by elected leaders and directives from the Utah Board of Higher Education to eliminate diversity questions or statements used in hiring at Utah’s higher education institutions, all hiring units at the university should discontinue the use of any type of diversity statements or similar practices as part of their unit-level applicant or employee hiring processes.

Human Resources teams (https://www.hr.utah.edu/contact/search.php) on main campus and University of Utah Health are available to assist in designing job postings and potential interview questions for positions to accommodate the need to assess an applicant’s knowledge and ability to meet all aspects of a job function.
