TERROR-CREATURES FROM THE GRAVE (1965)
We start off with a guy being trampled to death by a horse, but then we cut to a guy driving to a remote villa. His name is Albert. He is a lawyer, and his law partner, Joseph, received a letter from Dr. Hauff (the owner of villa), who wants help writing his will. Joseph wasn’t available, so Albert went instead to secure the legal work. At the house, he meets Hauff’s daughter, Corinne, and Hauff’s wife, Cleo. (Cleo is Corinne’s step-mother, and she is Barbara Steele!) The women tell Albert that Dr. Hauff died the year before!
Over dinner, Corinne tells Albert that Dr. Hauff was an accomplished spiritualist. Albert is invited to spend the night, and he listens to some of Dr. Hauff’s old wax cylinder tubes, but he is interrupted by a scream from Corinne, who says that she saw her father! The next day Albert meets Dr. Nemek, and they, along with Corinne, head to town. Along the way, Corinne thinks she sees her father, again, and she screams, again. They stop at the house of a man named Stinner and then continue to town to talk to the mayor. They find that he is dead! They head to the coroner’s office. The coroner basically explains that when Dr. Hauff died, there were five witnesses who signed a statement, and now three of those witnesses are dead! The next person on the list is Stinner, but the name of the last person is illegible.
Back at the house, Cleo and Corinne bicker, with Cleo essentially admitting that she hated the life she had with Hauff. That night, Stinner hears creaking wagon wheels outside his house. (We previously learned about the Plague Spreaders, some dudes from the fifteenth century who were caught spreading plague and then executed. Their mummified hands are located in a cabinet in the villa.) Stinner impales himself on a sword, and disfigured hands move his chair. The next morning Albert and Dr. Nemek are at Stinner’s house, and they find a half-destroyed note that he was apparently writing to warn the last person on the list.
Everyone goes to the cemetery, because Dr. Hauff’s body is going to be exhumed and moved to the family crypt. Cleo (Barbara Steels) wears a fantastic hat. But the grave is empty! Meanwhile, Joseph, Albert’s law partner, has arrived at the villa. He sees the profile of Dr. Hauff sitting in a chair, and the man speaks to him: “I’ve been waiting for you. I knew you would come.” Albert and Dr. Nemek find him, but there is no sign of Dr. Hauff. Joseph is recuperating in his room, and Cleo enters. They are lovers! They have sex.
Albert and Corinne are later looking for Kurt, the gardener, and they just miss him as he enters the crypt with the body of Dr. Hauff! Apparently, the Plague Spreaders are coming, previously commanded by Dr. Hauff to destroy his enemies. Kurt stumbles up to the others, but he has contracted the plague! The mummified hands in the cabinet begin to move, which is a cool scene. Kurt points at a mirror, where we see into the past. Dr. Hauff was confronted by a number of people, who were demanding that he leave the town. We see the various dead people, including Joseph and Cleo. Dr. Hauff is explaining that he knows all their secrets, but Joseph sneaks up behind Hauff and bonks him on the head. Everyone laughs as he dies, but Cleo, in the present, throws a candle holder at the mirror and breaks it.
Outside, the graves of the Plague Spreaders push open. (We never actually see them.) Back in the villa, Cleo runs around and opens a door. There is a shadow, a Plague Spreader, and she has the plague! She falls over by a harp and dies. Joseph runs away, and we look at him from the perspective of a Plague Spreader as he tries to stop it with a little pistol. Albert later finds him, dead, of the plague! Albert, Corinne, and Dr. Nemek flee the house, but they are chased by the Plague Spreaders. They see a pool of water and remember a song that has played throughout the movie about “pure water.” Albert realizes that “pure” rain water will drive the Plague Spreaders away. Dr. Nemek dies, but it begins to rain before the Plague Spreaders can give Albert and Corinne the plague. The two spend a long time walking away from us in the rain. The end.
This was ok. I’m tempted to say it was meh, but nothing with Barbara Steele can be that bad. The title in Italian was “5 tombe per un medium.” Apparently, the only available print is low-resolution, perhaps a copy of a copy, with various artifacts and defects. The dubbing was not great. The overall concept was certainly interesting (dude summons five medieval plague spreaders to kill his enemies!), and there were some nice images. There are a few scenes where the characters look directly at the camera, suggesting a horrified intimacy that most other movies of the era don't provide. Ultimately, the film lacks any other notable stylistic elements. There's no sense of dread. The lackluster filmmaking renders this forgettable.

Hello, playlist maker. You have 30 minutes to arrange a playlist with at least 15 songs that have a trans energy to them. If you include I/me/myself by will wood or any song by cavetown, this really really big hungry and scary monster in a cage next to you will be released and you will be mauled. Good luck.

I was tagged by @noire-pandora, thank you so much for tagging!
I’ve decided to give two little peeks today - the first is some fun travel banter from the next chapter of Hearts Like Lions, and the next is from the opening chapter of Sides of the Coin, my upcoming Greedfall fic. The second preview will be under the cut!
—————————————————————————
“Making tea?” Dorian asked. “Good. Evelyn is a damned monster in the morning without it.”
“I highly doubt that.” Evelyn was known to be an early riser at Skyhold, when she had had a decent night’s sleep. Cullen remembered her confession about the little rest she got in the field. It was more likely she was simply tired.
“Have you seen that woman with a knife?” Dorian asked. Cullen paused in his stoking for just a moment before continuing
“Point taken.”
“So, what’s next on the agenda now that we’ve saved the Empress?”
“I’m not sure. I’ve been working with Leliana to hunt down Samson, but it’s turned up little so far. It doesn’t matter - he can’t hide forever, and when he slips up, we’ll find him.”
“Nasty business, that. All those Templars turning to red lyrium.”
“Corypheus exploited a weakness that the Chantry left them open to. I can’t say I don’t understand why they did it.” Cullen sighed. “It doesn’t make this any easier.”
“And you? How are you doing?”
Cullen looked at the mage in surprise. He certainly hadn’t told Dorian of his struggles, having only mentioned it to a select few people. So how…?
“Evelyn didn’t tell me, if that’s what you’re thinking,” Dorian explained. “I’m assuming she knows, of course. I haven’t discussed it with anyone. Any mage of skill would notice it - there’s been a distinct decline of magical energy around you. The kind of energy only put out by lyrium.”
“Some days are better than others. For the moment, I’m fine.”
“I know I mercilessly tease you, but I do consider you a friend. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help. Short of sharing your tent, again, that is.”
Cullen smiled. “I appreciate it. Though I think I preferred the teasing.”
“Thank the Maker, so do I. Does your hair always look like this in the morning? Is that why Varric calls you Curly? I’d always wondered-”
A scream - Evelyn’s scream - pierced the quiet morning. Cullen raced for the tent with his sword drawn and his heart in his throat. He hadn’t seen anyone approaching. Had he missed something?
He threw back the flaps and rushed in, finding Evelyn backed into the corner, cowering behind a fur blanket and pointing at the assailant that held her hostage - a small black spider.
“Cullen, get rid of it!” she shrieked.
“You’re… afraid of spiders?”
“Now!”
Cullen sheathed his sword, sighing in relief that Evelyn was in no immediate danger. She pressed backward even further as the tiny beast crawled along the ground.
Cullen scooped her attacker into his hands and set it free in the woods, fighting back laughter all the while. Evelyn watched him with eagle eyes to make sure it was far enough away.
“You are safe, my lady. Your knight has gotten rid of the beast for you,” Cullen teased, returning to where Evelyn stood at the entrance to the tent and placing a light kiss upon her forehead. She clutched a blanket tightly around herself, only her bare feet and the hems of her linen breeches showing.
“A knight would have slain it,” she grumbled, still staring into the woods.
“See? Cranky,” Dorian muttered to Cullen, handing Evelyn a mug. She slipped a hand through the opening of the furs to accept it.
“If it returns, I promise I will slay it,” Cullen grinned.
“If it returns, I’m setting this whole camp on fire.”
——————————————————————————
As suspected, the afternoon sun had risen high in the sky by the time Kurt was finished with her. Corinne sheathed the blade at her hip while Otto returned to his duties.
“It appears we’ve brushed up on the basics,” he said, apparently satisfied.
“It does, and I’d like to be on my way. I’ve quite the list of things to do before we depart.”
“Fair enough. You can always train in our barracks on the island if you’re feeling rusty.”
“Is this your way of telling me I’ll never be free of your drills and tutelage?”
“What, you thought that just because you’re Legate now you get to be lazy?” Kurt grinned.
“Words and diplomacy are a weapon of their own, Kurt!” Corinne goaded. “But surely a cold, hardened mercenary such as yourself has no need for such skills.”
Kurt snorted. “I think I’ll leave the dainty-schmoozing to you.”
“Are your bags packed for the great departure?”
“Yes. You know I get by with very little. Unlike you dainties.” Corinne playfully shoved his arm. “You’re not angry that I’m coming with you, I hope?”
“On the contrary! I am thrilled that both you and Sir De Courcillon are joining our party. A few friends at your side in unknown territory is a boon.”
Kurt tucked his sword into its sheath. “Don’t tell me the old school teacher is competing against me.”
“There is something about him,” Corinne teased. “Some find that sort of quiet intelligence incredibly attractive, you know.”
“Oh, please. Don’t even start with me. He’s much too old for you. You’ll give your uncle a heart attack if he hears you talking like that.”
“And what if I prefer an older man?”
“Then you’re a fool. There are plenty of young dandies around here for you to fawn over.”
“What, the ones picking fights with Constantin? I’d rather take my chances with Courcillon.”
——————————————————————————
I’m all about the banter today 😂

to elaborate: these are the cultural things I am specifically missing about the 2010s:
pop punk music
angsty alternative music
the wave of excellent middle grade fantasy books
earnest fantasy and sci-fi movies and shows with subpar CGI but fantastic writing
acoustic folk indie music (the very specifically pretentious hippie kind that involved ukuleles)
the wave of acapella enthusiasm brought on by Pentatonix
those Youtube cover artist people (Christina Grimmie, Kurt Hugo Schneider, Sam Tsui, Max Schneider, Kina Grannis, etc.) who were all friends and kept collaborating with each other
the wave of REALLY good kids on The Voice/[insert country]'s Got Talent singers
introspective and hopeful girlypop music (Ingrid Michaelson, Gabrielle Aplin, Sara Bareilles, Regina Spektor, Mindy Gledhill, Corinne Bailey Rae, Norah Jones, Birdy, Jess Penner, Colbie Caillat, Christina Perri, Jasmine Thompson, Gregory and the Hawk)
the guy equivalent (Philip Philips, Greg Laswell, Gavin DeGraw, Gregory Alan Isakov, Sleeping At Last) (I'm sure there's more. I just listened to more female singers as a teenager)
whimsical Youtuber-singer-songwriters in their optimistic ukulele/guitar days (Dodie Clark, Tessa Violet, Maisie Peters, Conan Gray, Orla Gartland)
genuinely earnest and optimistic songwriters who weren't afraid to make HAPPY and joyful music (Owl City!!!)
tweens and teenagers making very intense AMVs for their favourite shows/anime
eclectic fandom culture without the cringe factor/fear of cringe factor we see today
the FUN action-adventure movies. Original Avengers stuff. Pirates of the Caribbean. Pacific Rim. How to Train Your Dragon.
that era of animation was also 10/10
the gaggle of earnest, book-loving Booktubers who had medium good to medium awful cameras, fairy lights(?), and a lot of enthusiasm (PeruseProject, Emma Green, BookishPrincess, Kate Howe, lucythereader, Mollie Read) who were in their teens and early twenties and were making videos because they just wanted to talk about books
those grainy BroadwayDotCom vlogs and humorous videos with Seth Rudetsky
the really out-there fantasy adventure anime and manga that were clean(er) than today's stuff
But mostly the feeling of joy and excitement and adventure that came with all of those things.
Not to be like. I miss the 2010s
#did i cry over this yesterday because i missed being an overexcited teenager with so much love for these joyful stories? yes.#was this triggered by the pjo trailer and remembering how MUCH i loved those stories and how they carried me through middle school? yes#on an unrelated note the horrors have disappeared (SIGH) (i hate to say that i WANT them to return but like. i'd like my cycle#to be REGULAR AND NORMAL FOR ONCE)

ABILITY DESCRIPTION: Invincible Woman forms a force field shield around the user and up to three subjects. This force field is impenetrable and can be held for an indeterminate amount of time, so long as the user has the energy to keep it held up; holding up the field does take energy, but if the user is well-rested, it can be held up for long enough to get to safety or call for backup.
BRIEF OVERVIEW:
A little girl with big ambitions, nothing could ever stop Francis from something once she has put her mind to it. An intelligent and thoughtful girl, Francis is a family person before all else, believing it to be the most important thing in her life far before anything else. She specifically clings to her mom, Louisa, and spends much of her time with her, reading and writing. Francis has a penchant for coming up with stories, and even when she was too small to write them down herself, she'd dictate them to her mother for her to write down. She is, overall, a very sweet person, who is very difficult to shake or bother, and does her best to be a friend to everyone, so long as they deserve it.

It's here! DECAHEDRON is now live!
June 2021 marks the 10th anniversary of Artists on the Lam. Celebrate with us!
It was on Monday, June 6, 2011, that I published my first post on what would later be voted “Best Arts Blog” in the Chicago Reader’s Best of Chicago issue.
As part of the celebration, I've curated an international exhibition called DECAHEDRON.
Knowing from the start that this would be virtual, I wanted to involve more artists than I would for any physical show, as a way to truly take advantage of having an online platform (when getting interviewed about 2020’s acclaimed SLAYSIAN, one point that kept coming up was the silver lining of being able to exhibit bonus pieces as digital exclusives), and to truly fit a milestone anniversary.
I invited all artists from past shows, invited other artists I admired but hadn’t exhibited yet (likening the process to an episodic TV series where you wander the land embarking on different adventures and meeting different characters, and then in the end you go back and revisit all your old friends and ask them to be part of your heist), and—in keeping with the nature of Artists on the Lam group shows—put out an open call for artists too. Past, present, and future are all intertwined.
The result? A show with 74 artists, with over 350 works of art.
Hailing from all over Chicago, the country, and the world, DECAHEDRON's participating artists include:
Adrienne L. Glover (@a-glorious-art), Adrienne Powers, Agnieszka Ligendza, Alba Margarita (@albamargaritaart), Alex Kostiw, Alix Anne Shaw, Allen Vandever, Angie Redmond, Brianna Lynn Hernández Baurichter, Bruce Riley, Caroline Walser, Carrie McGath, Céline Browning, Chad Kouri (@chadkouri), Charlene Moy, CHema Skandal!, Chris Silva (@lovercraft).

Don’t Laugh at Me
Summary: Corinne gets a call from Aiden’s school and Aiden learns a couple lessons from his parents.
Warnings: Mentions of violence and name calling
“We have a problem.” I told my husband with my arms crossed.
“What is it, regina mea?” Sebastian asked, his eyes wide as he looked me over.
“I just got off the phone with YOUR son’s principal. We need to go get him. Now.” I told him and walked away. I grabbed my purse and the keys from the dish by the door before running to the car. Sebastian met me outside moments later and hopped into the passenger side seat. I ripped out of the drive way and started heading to our son’s school, my foot like lead on the gas pedal.
“Rin, what’s going on? Tell me.” Seb asked me, his voice trembling.
“Your son got into a fight.” I huffed and whipped into a parking spot at the school. I jumped out of the car and stormed into the school, my nostrils flared. I felt Sebastian run after me and heard him breathing heavily.
“For such a small woman, you move so fast.” He heaved, following me into the principal’s office. We walked in to see Aiden bawling with a two black eyes, swollen lips, and cuts all over. I ran over to him and pulled him close, running my fingers through his hair.
“Mr. and Mrs. Stan, thank you for coming. Please have a seat. We need to discuss Aiden’s disciplinary action.” Mr. Baker, the school’s principal, said sternly.
“Like hell we do. My son is bloody and bruised through no fault of his own. You should be calling the other children’s parents down here. They targeted him. I’m taking him home.” I huffed, taking Aiden’s hand and we walked out to the car, hearing Sebastian apologize to the principal as he followed me.
“Can someone please tell me what is going on?” My husband asked, frustrated.
“Aiden, do you want to me to tell dad or do you want to tell him?” I asked my son as we sat in the parking lot of the school. He hiccupped and pointed to me, his voice silent. “Okay. Here’s what I was told. Aiden found out about auditions for the play coming up at the local theatre and got excited. He was talking to Amanda about it and two boys heard.” I started, wiping away a tear.
“One of them started calling him slanderous names that I’ve heard Jackson get called way too many times. The other pulled his shirt collar and started punching him, telling him he was going to ‘beat him straight’. And then the other boy joined in beating him up.” I whimpered and looked at my husband and son with tear filled eyes. “Finally, this trooper punched them both, hence the bruises on his knuckles.” I finished with a chuckle.
“And the principal thought he was going to discipline Aiden?” Sebastian asked rhetorically, his brow furrowed in anger. I nodded and grabbed his hand, looking at him.
“Don’t do anything. I think the principal has had enough of the Winters-Stan clan for the day.” I whispered before starting the car. “How about ice cream, Aiden? Would you like that?” I asked, looking in the rearview mirror. I saw his tear-streaked face curl into a weak smile as he nodded.
“You’re not mad at me?” He squeaked as I drove.
“Oh, baby, no. I could never be mad at you for something like this. Especially for defending yourself.” I told him sweetly as we pulled into Aiden’s favorite ice cream shop.
“But I hit someone. You taught me that hitting people isn’t okay.” He replied and looked up at me, my eyes welling at the bruises forming on his face.
“They hit you first. If you get hit first and there is no other way to make it stop, then it’s fine. And know that if that is the case, your father and I will always stand beside you.” I explained. “You’re my son. And I will always take care of you.” I whispered and hugged him as Sebastian brought ice cream over to the table we’d picked out.
“So, what play are you auditioning for, buddy?” Sebastian asked, taking a spoonful of rocky road.
“Oh, I’m not gonna audition for it.” Aiden murmured after eating some ice cream.
“Excuse me? I know I did not just hear that.” I growled, snapping my spoon in half.
“What I think your mother means is ‘what do you mean you’re not auditioning?’.” Sebastian elaborated.
“I don’t want what happened today to happen again.” Our son explained, avoiding looking at us. “I didn’t like being called those names and it hurt when they hit me.” He added.
“Aiden, listen. As one actor to another, it’s never going to be easy. People like that are going to be everywhere.” Sebastian told Aiden as I thought of something to say.
“Uncle Jackson is one of the best interior decorators I’ve ever seen. When he told his eighth-grade art teacher that’s what he wanted to do for a living, he got beat up so bad, he was in the emergency room. Gram and Gramp’s offered to homeschool him, but he refused. He went back to school and faced bullies everyday.” I told Aiden, my eyes filled with tears. “And you wanna know the best part? One of those bullies works for your uncle now.” I told him with a chuckle.
“What we’re trying to tell you is that it doesn’t matter what people say. People are always going to talk. Most of the time, they’re wrong. And even when they’re right, who cares? You do what you want to.” My husband told my son with a smile. I saw him lift his head and take a big bite of ice cream.
“But I still don’t know if I’ll be any good. I’ve never acted before.” Aiden said quietly. I looked at Sebastian and smiled.
“Time to work your actors’ magic, baby.” I whispered and kissed his cheek before going to grab a napkin.
“Thanks for that.” He chuckled as I came back. I smiled and took a bite of ice cream. “Aiden. It doesn’t matter if you’ve ever acted before. You’ll never know if you’re good at it or if you like it if you don’t try, buddy. Do you think I knew if I was going to be any good at it? I wanted to do it, so I did. And I have yet to regret it.” Sebastian told him with a smile and tousled his hair. “If it wasn’t for deciding to act, then I wouldn’t have been able to do what I get to do. I wouldn’t have met your mom. And I wouldn’t have gotten to be your dad.” My husband finished his speech and looked at me for approval.
“Alright. I’m gonna do it. Will one of you pick me up after school tomorrow?” Aiden smiled as I gave my husband a slight nod.
“I’ll be there. And we’ll be there when you get that role.” I gave my son a wink before looking at my husband.
“Now, are you going to tell us what role you’re auditioning for?” He asked and patted Aiden’s shoulder.
“I’m auditioning for Kurt in The Sound of Music.” He said proudly. I smiled and started hitting Sebastian’s arm excitedly.
“Oh dear. I think you’re about to send your mother into a happiness induced heart attack.” Seb laughed and grabbed my hand, kissing the knuckles softly. “Let’s get you home and bandaged up before school tomorrow.” My husband smiled and we walked to the car.
“I know you’ll make a great Kurt, darling.” I told him sweetly and smiled, watching as Sebastian drove us home.

@hawkeish you asked for angst, right? Pure, unadulterated angst? 😂
In all seriousness, thank you so much for the tag! Since a chapter of Hearts Like Lions was just posted, I don’t have much to share in regards to Evelyn’s story at the moment, but I do have some of the opening chapter of Sides of the Coin (title possibly subject to change but most likely this is gonna be it), my upcoming Greedfall fic featuring Corinne De Sardet and Kurt.
CW for terminal illness
———————————————————————
“What is this?” her mother’s voice called, weak and hoarse. “Have you not been taught to knock? I’ve asked a thousand times.”
Corinne strode over to her quickly, taking her mother’s hand and kneeling before her. The woman was wan and thin, black veins peering through like webs of ink on paper. Her eyes were clouded and dark, sight having long since left her.
“Oh! It’s you, my dear child!” She clutched Corinne weakly, bony fingers grasping on with the little strength she could muster. Her breaths were sharp and haggard, every moment a painful struggle.
“Mother, I’m sorry. I’m having trouble getting used to your condition.” Corinne’s voice cracked as she spoke. She fought the burning behind her eyes and felt a tightening in her chest. The princess had once graced the palace halls with a presence unmatched. Now, the frail figure seated before her was nearly unrecognizable.
“Come now. Let us speak of more pleasant things. I’m so very happy to hear your voice.”
Corinne didn’t want to speak of pleasant things. She wanted to kick and scream, to sob until she was left numb of feeling. Her mother’s light touch on her face, comforting even at her weakest, somehow made her heart ache even more. She blinked back the tears, knowing it was now her turn to be strong.
“You remind me so much of your father,” her mother cooed. “I do miss him so.”
It was proving too much. Corinne stood and paced to the window, staring out at nothing while she tried to wrangle her emotions into submission.
“Today is the big day, isn’t it?” the princess continued. “Ready to set sail to that island everyone is talking about?”
“Yes, but the idea of leaving you behind, alone and ill…” Corinne didn’t turn, unable to face the woman that had raised her and confess that she was leaving when she was needed most.
“Dying, my child. Alas, there is nothing you can do by staying that would ease my suffering. One thing brings me cheer - they say the island is full of miracles. And we might find a cure!”
Corinne shook her head and turned, throwing a hand out in frustration. Did she not understand?
“Even if I were to find it, I would never be able to return in time to-”
“I know. But it brings me comfort to know my daughter has left on a mission to heal her people. Come now - it is time for you to take leave. Here, take this with you.”
“What is it?” Corinne stepped slowly toward her, peering at the object in her mother’s outstretched hand. She trembled under the meager weight of the token. Corinne took it and examined it. It looked like a large coin, but the markings were strange and unfamiliar.
“A family heirloom,” the princess explained. “Something that… Take it and keep it with you. May it bring you good luck!”
Both sensed that the time of parting had come. Corinne pressed her lips to her mother’s forehead, cold and clammy with illness.
“All my blessings go with you, my child. Now, be off.”
Corinne opened her mouth, trying to find the words to say goodbye. The lump in her throat had returned and tears brimmed, threatening to betray her at any moment.
It was too hard.
“I love you,” she said instead. Corinne felt the wetness streak her cheek. It was a small mercy to know her mother wouldn’t see her crumble.
“And I love you. Go, my child. Make me proud, as you always have.”
There was nothing left to say. Corinne took one last look at her mother, memorizing her face and trying to remember how she was before the malichor had reached her. Then she quietly shut the door behind her.
She rushed for her quarters, avoiding the eyes of servants and wouldbe wellwishers and anyone else who may wish to stop her and locked herself inside. Once alone, she slid down the wall, falling to a heap on the floor as her sobs rang out against the stone.

New York Spring & Summer Music Festivals to Get Excited for in 2019
Festival season is upon us! With both weekends of Coachella out of the way and Austin City Limits having just announced its line-up for the fall, those days of great music and memories under the sun are no longer a distant thought.
Living in New York, you don’t have to go far to find some of the summer’s hottest festivals. Between the world-renown Governor’s Ball and Electric Zoo festivals, the summer-long city-sponsored Summerstage and Celebrate Brooklyn shows and the localized and smaller festivals, New York will be bursting with live music this summer.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is gearing up for festival season by bringing you a list of the New York music festivals to keep on your radar. Check out these 10 for the ultimate summer of music!
1. Red Bull Music Festival: Red Bull’s annual festival showcasing one-of-a-kind performances from an eclectic array of new and established artists started this week with two performances from Latina singer Rosalia on Tuesday and there’s still a lot to look forward to. The multi-venue, nearly month-long showcase boasts performances from JPEGMAFIA, Tierra Whack, FKA Twigs, Teyana Taylor and more, including a special premiere of Holly Herndon’s upcoming concept album ‘Proto.’ (Now-5/18)
2. Governors Ball: With Panorama skipping the 2019 festival season, Governors Ball is once again the biggest three-day event in the city. New York’s indie answer to Coachella, the festival draws in people from all across the country and globe for a line-up that features the biggest names in music today. This year boasts headlining performances from Tyler, The Creator, Lil Wayne, Florence + The Machine, The 1975, Major Lazer, Nas and The Strokes with more than 70+ artists playing in total. That’s not to mention the “After Dark” pre and post festival shows scattered around the city. (5/31-6/2)
3. Summerstage: Once again expanding beyond its original home in Central Park, City Parks Summerstage provides an entire summers-worth of eclectic live music and dance choices ranging from rock, pop and hip-hop to jazz and classical at parks throughout the five boroughs, many of which are free to attend. Some of this year’s highlights include free sets from Big Freedia, the Aussie BBQ festival, Japanese Breakfast, Alvvays, Lisa Lisa, Jody Watley, EPMD, Corinne Bailey Rae, The Mountain Goats, Talib Kweli and The Wailers, as well as benefit shows with George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Kurt Vile, Guster, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Bloc Party and The B-52s. More shows are still being added, taking the festivities into the fall. (6/1-10/1)
4. BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!: In addition to Summerstage, Brooklyn’s Prospect Park has its own summer-long mostly free festival. Celebrate Brooklyn takes place at the park’s historic bandshell, this year’s eclectic performers include free sets from Patti LaBelle, Calexico with Iron & Wine, Liz Phair and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists and Bomba Estereo, and benefit shows from The National and Courtney Barnett, Father John Misty and Jason Isbell and Mac Demarco. (6/4-8/10)
5. Make Music New York: Not your typical music festival, Make Music New York is a musical celebration that takes place during the summer solstice every year. Modeled after France’s Fête de la Musique, musicians of all levels are encouraged to “take center stage and share their skills and passions through live performances in public plazas and parks, on sidewalks and in front of shops, and in partnership with cultural institutions and businesses across all five boroughs.” Some of the special events you can witness/participate in include folk hootenanny Porch Stomp, underground punk happening Punk Island and Mass Appeal sets with many musicians playing one kind of instrument. (6/21)
6. Warped Tour: Warped Tour may officially be over as a touring festival, but that doesn’t mean it’s over. Like many expected, Kevin Lyman brought the name back to celebrate what would have been its 25th season. Instead of a summer of touring, the new incarnation includes three large-scale festivals, including one right on the beach in Atlantic City. Many of the festival’s most influential alumni will be playing, including 311, Andrew W.K., Bad Religion, Bowling For Soup, Blink-182, Glassjaw, Good Charlotte, Less Than Jake, The Offspring, Reel Big Fish, Shiragirl, Taking Back Sunday, Thrice, The Starting Line, We The Kings and more. (6/29-6/30)
7. Great South Bay Music Festival: Long Island’s biggest bay side festival is back for another year. The Great South Bay Music Festival boast four unique days of music paying homage to the island’s musical heritage. Thursday features the return of LI pop-punk darlings Taking Back Sunday to the fest, along with Glassjaw, The Menzingers, Frank Iero and more. Friday gets a more ska-tinged vibe with headlining sets from Sublime with Rome, Slightly Stoopid, Soja and local favorites Oogie Wawa. Saturday features Lotus, Dweezil Zappa, Assembly Of Dust and more, as well as a tribute to Woodstock. Finally, on Sunday War will be celebrating their 50th anniversary with America and the Edgar Winter Band. This has always been a great festival with good music and a killer vibe. (7/18-7/21)
