When a prompt says mini-fic pls remember I’m not good at doing mini-fics so this is...fairly short but as ever, my prompt-replying skills got a little out of control.

The kids talk about family.

9. Things you said when I was crying

“Hey, shit, Yahiro, it’s okay,” Kuon murmured. He had no idea what to do or say, except this right now. Just…maybe try and say something. Whatever needed to be said. Which sounded easy, except for the part where he had literally no idea what he was doing. Kneeling down, he tried to put an arm around Yahiro’s shoulders and Yahiro cringed away. Shit. Fuck. “It’s okay. You wanna tell me what’s up?”

“It’s nothing.” Yahiro wiped his nose on his sleeve. “I’m just…I miss home sometimes. My family…even when I was always in trouble, they didn’t…they didn’t change their mind about keeping me…I love them so much and I miss them.”

“I…” Kuon wasn’t sure where the sentence was going. He couldn’t say he related. He’d lost his family, and then his foster family had been awful, and now they were gone too and he had Nozomi but they didn’t have that kind of bond. He couldn’t really imagine what Yahiro had. “Of course they wouldn’t change their mind about you. You’re pretty great, Yahiro, and I guess they saw that and they understood?” 

“You think?” Yahiro asked, perking up. “I didn’t like making trouble for them. It wasn’t their fault. Sometimes...I feel like whoever my real parents were, they got rid of me because they knew what kind of person I’d be and they didn’t want to have to deal with that and everything that would happen...with me...” he wiped away a few tears. “They didn’t want me.”

Kuon knew this wasn’t the time to bitch about how they all had family angst. He wasn’t going to do that anyway. “They’re assholes, whoever they are. You got a good family, Yahiro. That’s one better than me.”

Yahiro’s face fell, eyes welling up all the more. “I’m so sorry Kuon! I didn’t- I d-didn’t mean to make it seem like I was complaining when you have every right to complain and I-”

“Yahiro! You can fucking complain. It’s shitty what happened to you, and you deserved better, but maybe if they hadn’t done that, you wouldn’t have...been you. They could’ve been awful. They could have treated you like shit. This way, you got a family that loves you and...and that’s something, alright? You’re wanted. People care about you.” Kuon looked away, hands in his pockets, trying to act casual even after all that. Acting casual was the only thing he could think to do.

“Do you care about me?” Yahiro asked tentatively, head cocked in that little way he had and Kuon groaned.

“Why are you asking me that, man? Do you wanna hurt me?” He saw the look of panic on Yahiro’s face and corrected himself. “Joking, joking. I...I’m using you. You know that. You always fucking have done, dammit.”

“That doesn’t mean you don’t.”

“No,” Kuon agreed. “It doesn’t. I guess I do, alright? You okay now? Done with the crying?”

Yahiro nodded, leaning his head on Kuon’s shoulder. “You’re such a good friend, Kuon. Thank you.”

He really wasn’t.

That made things all the worse.
