âMr. Qian, Iâm failing to see how this is any of your concern.â
âBecause youâre treating my kid like heâs a felon.â
âWell yours treated mine like a chew toy so excuse me for exercising some caution,â you finally snapped, tightening your grip around your son and cradling the back of his head.
PART I: moments turn to dreams within my mind
Woobin had always been a kid with big feelings, from big smiles to big tears, and as his mom you encouraged him to feel those big feelings when they came. Your older cousin often warned you that you were raising a âcrybaby,â but you brushed off her attempts at parenting advice. Youâd rather have your Woobin and all his softness than her kid who screamed and threw his monster trucks at the wall at the slightest provocation.
But that didnât make it any easier for you to walk in and see your son bawling by himself in the corner of his classroom when you went to pick him up from preschool that afternoon. You immediately skirted around a couple other kids and parents to kneel down beside him, feeling your heart breaking as you rubbed his back, âBinnie, Binnie, hey, hey, hey. Mommyâs here.â
You caught the three-year-old by the underarms before he could throw his arms around your neck. His face was bright red, eyes puffy from clearly how hard he had been crying, and snot and spit coated his chin.
âWait a second, Binnie, I know,â you kept your voice level and calm despite how frantic you felt. âIs it a scary cry or a boo-boo cry?â
It took him several deep inhales and sniffling exhales before he could sob out, âScary and boo-boo cry, Mommy!â
âOh, baby,â you immediately enfolded him in your arms, cradling him to your chest gently. âWhat hurts, Binnie? Can you show me the boo-boo?â
It was then that one of his teachers finally joined you, an apologetic look on her face, âMs. Y/N, I am so sorry. We would have called, but it happened right before the end of the school day.â
âWhat happened?â
âWoobin had an incident with another friend.â
âAn incident? What sort of incident?â You looked around for another crying kid, expecting that they both had gotten hurt doing something together.
Woobin had just pulled up the left sleeve of his whale patterned longsleeve shirt when his teacher explained to you, âWoobin got bit.â
And there, on your sonâs upper arm was the bright red imprint of teeth marks. In fact, it seemed to have been so recent that you could still see the indents in his skin. You were filled with such a burning, white hot rage that your skin tingled and if you werenât already holding Woobin, you think you wouldâve swung on someone. You liked to consider yourself a level-headed person, in control of your emotions, but it was practically all out the window in that moment.
âHe got bit?â You repeated her phrasing incredulously. âYou mean another kid bit him.â
âI understand that this can be upsettingââ
âHow did this happen?â You demanded, pulling Woobinâs sleeve back down and wrapping your arms around him tighter. âWhat were you doing?â
âMaâam, I think it would be best for all of us to have a discussion about this together.â
âAll of us? Including the biterâs parents? I want to know what you are going to do to make sure my child is safe at your preschool before I even think about bringing him back here, much less have some mediation like heâs at fault as much as the kid who bit him.â
The teacher paused, as if waiting to see if you were done, before speaking again, âMs. Y/N, it is our policy in such incidents to have a meeting between school personnel and the guardians of both involved children, regardless of... injury. In order for Woobin to keep his spot, you two are required to attend this meeting. We understand if you wish to seek out different accommodations for him, however, weâve found that all parties are typically satisfied with the outcome of this process. I highly encourage you try it, and if you still want to pull Woobin from our program after, that is of course your decision as his mother.â
Your chest was heaving as you took deep breaths, clenching your jaw as you stared her down. After a few moments of deliberation and listening to your sonâs continued sobs, you let out a short and bitter sigh, âWhen would this meeting be?â
âAfter school tomorrow. Will you be available then?â
âFine. Yes,â you stood up with your boy still in your arms, shifting him onto your hip. âBut Woobin will not be at school tomorrow.â
âHe will be missed,â she nodded with that same placid smile.
As you stalked out of the classroom, you passed by a father and son speaking to the other teacher.
The next day, you dropped Woobin off at your parentsâ place with a peck on his forehead and profuse âthank youâs to them. You had vented to your mother on the phone the night prior, after putting your son to bed, finally letting loose all the obscenities that you had wanted to in the preschool. Your mom gladly took her grandson for the day before shooing you off to work.
You then had to leave work a little early to pick Woobin up from your parentsâ to take him to the preschool since the meeting was to take place right after the school day ended. For some godforsaken reason that escaped you, they required the kids to be in attendance at the meeting too. As if your three-year-old was really going to be testifying about the entire situation. The most him being there could accomplish was prove that he had a bite mark, which a picture on your phone could also do.
After a âgive âem hellâ from your mom, and an offer to come along from your dad, which you contemplated for a moment, then declined, you started for the school. While your dad coming along would make you feel better, it would also make you feel like you were buying your first car again and were afraid of the salesman trying to scam you for being a woman. This was a meeting about the welfare and treatment of your son, you could do this.
Standing in the lobby with some other parents who were milling around, waiting for the respective classrooms to announce they were ready for pick-up, you found yourself tapping your foot impatiently. The 1-year-olds picked up first, then the 2-year-olds. As those families filtered out, you were left with only a few parents, as this section of the school only went up to 3-year-olds. The 4-year-olds went to a different wing of the building for VPK, and you knew that the other buildings on the rather expansive campus held an elementary, middle, and even high school.
You felt Woobin shift in your arms to get comfortable, and readjusted him to your other hip, âSorry, Binnie, I know youâre tired.â
âDo you two want to sit?â A voice spoke up from behind you.
You turned around and had to look down at a man in a suit sitting on one of the padded benches in the lobby. He was presumably some kind of businessman from the nice upkeep and fit of his suit, even as he had loosened the tie a little bit for being off of work. His handsome, friendly smile wouldâve made your heart skip a beat on any other day, if you werenât on a mission today.
All of the seating had been taken up when you got there, and you didnât even think to look around for open spots as other parents started to leave.
The man shifted to one end, gesturing towards the open spots that could fit probably three adults comfortably. You smiled at him gratefully, âOh, yes, thank you.â
You sat down, keeping your sleepy Woobin on your lap. Being at his grandparentsâ today had thrown off his usual nap schedule, and you rubbed his back soothingly. Rolling up his sleeve which was on the side opposite from the man, you inspected the bite mark. It had blossomed into a rather gnarly bruise overnight, all blue and purple, and it only made anger churn again in your chest. He hadnât given any indication that it still hurt as you fixed his sleeve, thumb tenderly swiping over the area after.
Finally, the three-year-old class was dismissed for pick-up, and the other parents gathered their children. You hung back, waiting for all of them to filter out, before you approached the classroom. You figured the parents of the biter would still be in there, but hadnât expected the man who had offered you a seat to be the one there with another little boy and the teachers.
âWonderful, everyone is here,â Mrs. Chen, the older of the two teachers, announced.
âQian Kun.â The man took it upon himself to do the introductions, bowing to you politely. He then ruffled the hair of the boy standing beside him, just above knee-height, âAnd this is my son Junyi. I am deeply sorry for Junyi biting Woobin, MissâŠ?â
âY/L/N Y/N,â you half-nodded half-bowed back to him as best you could with Woobin in your arms. âAnd before we get into all that, what I really want to know isââ You rounded on the teachers. âHow this could have even happened.â
Ms. Xu, the younger teacher with whom you had spoken yesterday, opened a door on the far side of the classroom, âOf course. Weâll be having the meeting in here.â
With a short sigh at how your question was once again brushed off, you stepped into the interior office space. It looked like it must be where the teachers took their breaks and did any sort of administrative work. A few desks were against the walls, closed laptops and bags set on a couple of them. There was a table set up in the middle, four chairs around it, and a small area with toys off to the side.
âWe have a place over there for the children to play while we discuss,â Ms. Xu smiled, gesturing to the toys youâd spotted when you walked in.
Mr. Qian nodded, gently directing his son towards them, âGo on and play for a bit, Junyi. Daddyâs going to talk right over here, okay?â
Junyi toddled over and plopped himself down on the playmat, picking up a truck and doll, easily entertaining himself. The other three adults looked to you and your son expectantly.
âThank you, but Woobin is going to be staying with me,â you informed them. All the talking had made Woobin stir, but he seemed rather content in your arms anyway, simply looking between all the adults with big, curious eyes.
âMs. Y/L/N, I assure you, I had a talk with Junyi last night and again this morning about not biting our friends. He shouldnât be doing that anymore.â
âAnd I assure you, Mr. Qian, my concerns are not about your parenting,â you told him frankly. âBut Woobin will be remaining with me for the duration of this meeting.â
âMs. Y/L/N, really, Woobin will be fine with Junyââ
Mr. Qianâs jaw dropped, and Mrs. Chen cut in before he could say anything else.
âLetâs all sit down and try to have a more productive discussion.â The words were phrased like a suggestion, but the stern tone she said them in very much let you know that they werenât. âMs. Y/L/N, Woobin can of course be wherever you are most comfortable having him.â
You nodded to her curtly, taking a seat at the table. With Woobin more awake, you turned him in your lap to face the table, and set up a couple toys and small games on the tabletop to keep him occupied. The teachers took a seat beside each other, leaving you and Mr. Qian sitting caddy-corner.
âFirst, I want to know what happened,â you demanded, entirely focused on the two teachers.
Ms. Xu took over the explaining, âThe class had earned free play yesterday after finishing their curriculum work early. After, we were doing our end of the day clean-up activities, which all of the students help with. Junyi and Woobin were assigned to pick up toys this week. It seems there was a disagreement about who was going to be putting away a specific toy, a whale. Woobin was bit.â
You clenched your jaw at that passive phrasing again. âAnd where were you two when this was going on?â
âMrs. Chen was assisting the students who were cleaning the snack tables on the other side of the room. I was the one overseeing the students tidying that side of the room.â
âWhat do you mean when you say disagreement? Iâm trying to understand how it was allowed to escalate into biting.â
Mr. Qian finally spoke up again, âMs. Y/L/N, Junyi has never done anything like this before, I honestly donât know where this came from. Heâs not a mean kid.â
âMr. Qian, that is not what I said nor asked,â you turned to him coolly. âI want to know what exactly she was seeing and how much time she had to intervene.â
Ms. Xu recalled, âThe two of them were getting along fine. Junyi did seem to be getting a little frustrated, and Woobin was beginning to tear up, but there was no contact at that point, and we know how Woobin is.â
She glanced at the boy on your lap with a sympathetic look, and it took everything in you to hold back your revulsion at her. Yes, your son was quicker to cry than others, but that didnât mean that as the adult, she shouldnât investigate what exactly was making him cry.
âI was keeping an eye on the situation to see if they would resolve it on their own,â she tried to reassure you. âIf I had thought that it would escalate like that at all, I promise I would have intervened. The contact was entirely unexpected and very sudden.â
âThe biting.â You clarified flatly.
âWell, yes,â she nodded. âAs soon as I saw it happen, both Mrs. Chen and I went over and separated the two. It was no more than a second or two at most, Ms. Y/N.â
âIt sounds like you two did the best you couldâve,â Mr. Qian told the teachers before turning to you once more. âMs. Y/L/N, again, I am so sorry that Junyi did this, but it sounds like it really did come out of nowhere.â
You pinched the bridge of your nose, inhaling deeply to recenter yourself. Entirely ignoring Mr. Qianâs platitudes, you looked at the teacher, âIt took you just a second or two to separate them?â
âYes,â she confirmed.
âBinnie, may I?â You murmured to your son, reaching for the sleeve of his shirt.
âOkay, Mommy,â he easily let go of his toy for you.
Rolling up the longsleeve of his shirt you turned him a little to show off the deep black, blue, and purple bruise in the perfect shape of a set of little teeth to the other three adults sitting around the table with you. Ms. Xu audibly gasped, Mrs. Chen covered her mouth and looked away, and Mr. Qian had the most visceral reaction, grimacing with his whole upper body as if heâd been slapped.
âI simply find it hard to believe that it was only a mere one or two seconds when my sonâs arm looks like this now,â you stated, making firm eye contact with both teachers. âSo, I will ask again: How long did it take you to separate them?â
Mrs. Chen and Ms. Xu exchanged uncomfortable looks before the older woman took over speaking.
âMs. Y/N, Iâm not sure if youâve had experience with removing a child thatâs bitten onto another and wonât let go, but you canât simply rip them apart without causing further damage to the other childâs skin. Ms. Xu couldnât separate them on her own, she had to wait for me to get there, and as weâve already said, I was on the other side of the classroom. So yes, it did take longer than we would have liked to separate the two.â
âSo it took longer than two seconds, which is what you just told me, twice. You have lied to me twice now about how my child got injured in your classroom.â You rolled Woobinâs sleeve back down, absentmindedly patting his head. Leaning forward as much as you could with him there, you jutted your pointer finger decidedly into the tabletop outside of his toys, âSo now I want to know what you and the school are going to do to ensure my sonâs safety in your classroom.â
The father beside you suddenly jolted into action at your words, âMs. Y/L/N, Junyi wonâtââ
You rounded on him incredulously, doing your best to both be firm while not absolutely losing it on him, âMr. Qian, I have already told you that I am not here to concern myself with how you parent your child. And I think the fact that you take my concern for my own childâs wellbeing as an affront to your relationship with yours says more than I would ever think is appropriate for me to.â
Okay, maybe you lost it on him a little.
With him sufficiently dumbfounded, you were able to focus back on the school staff in front of you, âNow please, can we get back to the topic at hand? I want to know what you two plan on doing about classroom management and observing the children under your care to prevent future incidents like this from happening. And I want it written down in a formal document, with assurances from your superiors about how both that and your staff training on communication with parents will be handled, because it certainly canât include lying to them.â
Ms. Xu looked down at her lap guiltily, while Mrs. Chen simply looked disgruntled. You held the older womanâs gaze steadily, having a distinct feeling that little lie youâd been told was her doing, and the junior teacher was following her own superiorâs lead.
âOf course, Ms. Y/N. I will call the principal right now to aid in drawing up the document youâve requested,â Mrs. Chen acquiesced, standing up and moving over to one of the desks, picking up the landline phone sitting there.
You nodded to her, finally letting your eyes drop down to your kid in your lap. You were unable to fight off the smile that spread across your lips as you looked at your son, picking up one of his hands and bringing it up to your mouth to kiss his little fingers.
âMy turn Mommy!â He squealed, grabbing one of your fingers and giving it a comically loud smooch.
You could feel Mr. Qianâs gobsmacked stare on you still, but ignored him. Youâd done what you came here to do, none of which involved making nice with the biterâs parents. While what youâd said about not wanting to comment on his parenting was true, that didnât mean that you hadnât formed a silent opinion or two about it, especially with how defensive he was. Needless to say, with how heâd attempted to handle this, you didnât really think very highly of Mr. Qian.
After leaving the mediation with your own copy of the formal plan on how the three-year-old classroomâs management and safety procedures were going to be tweakedâwith specific policies about biting and inter-student de-escalationâand a form that you and Mr. Qian had signed attesting that you participated in and were satisfied with the mediation process, you paused in the lobby of the school. You were juggling too many things: the papers, some of Woobinâs toys, Woobin, your purse, all while trying to get your car keys.
âHey, you need some help?â
You turned to Mr. Qian with a strained smile, âNo, thank you, weâre okay.â
Considering the conversation over, you went to set Woobin down on the ground, âHere, Binnie, wait right here next to Mommy.â
âOh, glad to see his legs do work.â The man was apparently still there.
âYes, they do.â You pressed your lips into a flat line, not very amused. âAnd I donât appreciate the passive-aggressive comment on my parenting, Mr. Qian.â
âI didnât meanââ
âYour joke was referencing the fact that the entire time youâve seen Woobin and me this afternoon, Iâve been either carrying him or holding him in my lap, despite the fact that he can stand on his own. Youâve been letting your son walk on his own all afternoon and havenât picked him up once. Thus, implying that Iâm coddling my son and raising him to be dependent on me, while youâre raising yours to be independent.â You tossed Woobinâs toys into your purse, then folded the papers in half to tuck in as well. âTrust me, Iâve dealt with lots of people thinking they can give me unwarranted advice on parenting. Especially men who think Iâm going to give him one too many hugs and heâll develop an Oedipus complex. They also presumably think that my uterus is roaming around my body causing me to become hysterical while Iâm telling them off, too.â
Having finally fished your car keys out from the bottom of your purse, you hoisted Woobin back up into your arms, defiantly making eye contact with the father, âGoodbye, Mr. Qian.â
A couple weeks of uneventfully picking up Woobin from preschool passed by. You saw Mr. Qian in the lobby, or passed by him in the classroom, of course. But you made no moves to talk to or even acknowledge him, nor he you. Ms. Xu seemed genuinely apologetic about what happened, doing everything possible to ingratiate herself to you at every opportunity, chatting you up at pick-up, asking about your day at work, or telling you about how well Woobin did at curriculum or art or such during the day. Mrs. Chen was cordial, and did your requested weekly check-ins on how the implementation of the new procedures were coming along. You sincerely engaged with and thanked her after each update. After all, you wanted your relationship with your sonâs teachers to be productive, not adversarial. As long as they were done lying to you.
Today when you went to pick up Woobin, he was contently sitting in his chair at a table, swinging his feet under him. You squatted down beside him, mussing up his hair a bit, âHey, Binnie. Have a good day?â
âYes,â he nodded, reaching out towards you, and you grabbed his hand. âMissed Mommy.â
âAnd I missed Binnie!â You replied, squeezing his little tummy, delighting in the bright little giggle he let out. âNow come on, bubbles, letâs go home.â
âOh, Ms. Y/N!â Ms. Xu was suddenly at your side before you could stand up.
âAh, hello, Ms. Xu, how are you?â
âIâm very excited, actually. But first, Woobin had a fantastic day at school today. He went down so easy for naptime, and he finished the curriculum so fast that we brought out a 4-year-old worksheet for him just to see, and he did that one too! It was some counting, and he did great!â
You turned to your son with a grin, âDid you have fun doing all that counting, Binnie?â
He nodded enthusiastically.
âAnd are you proud of yourself, bubbles?â
âYes, Mommy. Can I have a high five?â
âYou can have two high fives,â you held out both your palms for him to smack his little hands into.
Turning back to the teacher, you indulged her in the question she very clearly wanted you to ask, âAnd why are you so excited, Ms. Xu?â
She handed you the piece of paper in her hands, âWell, the Fall Festival is coming up. The entire campus pitches in to put it on, and this year the preschool is running the Bake Sale table. Weâre asking parents to volunteer to either bring treats, set up, break down, or do a shift running the table. If youâre able.â
It looked like you were the first parent Ms. Xu had given the sign-up sheet to, all the slots were empty. Eight slots to bring different baked goods, and two slots for each hour-long shift. While you werenât exactly feeling charitable to the schoolâWoobinâs bruise still hadnât fully healedâyou noticed the text at the top of the sign-up sheet advertising that any parent who volunteered would get two free ride tickets. Woobin hadnât gone on his first Ferris Wheel yet, and that was a memory you were looking forward to making with him.
âThe ride ticketsââ You tapped that part of the paper to draw Ms. Xuâs attention to it. âWill there be a Ferris Wheel?â
Her face immediately lit up and she nodded fervently, âYes! And Woobin should be just big enough as long as he sits in your lap.â
Well, you could kill an hour running a Bake Sale table with another random preschoolerâs parent then take Woobin on the Ferris Wheel. You quickly scribbled down your name for the first hour after the set-up shift, then handed the paper back to Ms. Xu.
The day of the Fall Festival was upon you, and you were holding Woobinâs hand as you walked across the expansive campus grounds. The booth where the preschoolâs Bake Sale was set up was near the other food and carnival games towards the front of the grassy clearing, and you could see the Ferris Wheel at the very back. You were about fifteen minutes early, and most vendors were still finishing setting up. Since you were doing the first shift, you wanted to make sure you werenât late, as well as see if there was anything from set up that you could help with if needed.
The Bake Sale booth was easy to find, and you saw two men there carrying in large tubs filled with containers of various baked goods.
âGood morning!â You greeted them brightly. âAre you the set-up crew?â
âJohnny Suh,â the taller of the two gestured to himself, then to his companion, âJeong Jaehyun.â
âNice to meet you two, Iâm Y/L/N Y/N, and this is Woobin. Iâm on the first shift. Your kids are in the three-year-old class as well, right?â
âYes, Sungchan,â Mr. Jeong confirmed with a smile. âI think Iâve seen you around the classroom at drop off and pick up before.â
âAnd Mark is my boy,â Mr. Suh nodded, then looked around the property. âWell, these are the last of it. Now, he should be around here somewhereâŠâ
You followed Mr. Suhâs gaze, and your stomach dropped as you recognized two familiar figures approaching the table from the direction of the school. Qian Kun was holding a metal box in one hand, and his sonâs hand with the other. He set the metal box down on the table.
âSorry, had to get the money box from Mrs. Chen in the classroom,â he explained, then looked to the two men with you. âThank you, Mr. Suh, Mr. Jeong. Ms. Y/L/N and I have got it from here.â
âAlright, weâll see you at the end for break-down, then,â Mr. Suh slapped Mr. Qianâs shoulder in a friendly gesture.
âGoodbye, Ms. Y/L/N, Mr. Qian. You too, Woobin and Junyi!â Mr. Jeong gave waves to all four of you before taking off after the other man who was already several long strides away from the table. âHey, Johnny!â
Two pop-up chairs were set up behind the table, and Mr. Qian grabbed a bag that was beside one, unfurling a playmat from the inside and laying it down on the ground beside the table. He poured out a bunch of toys too, then squatted down beside his son.
âAlright, Junyi, I need you to look at me. Daddy needs you to play on this blanket today, okay? If you need to go off the blanket, you have to tell Daddy first. Itâs so we can stay safe. You cannot leave the blanket without telling Daddy. All your favorite toys are there, youâre going to play with them and have fun. Iâve got snacks and stuff, too. But you need to stay on it. Do you understand, Junyi?â
âYes, Daddy.â
âOkay, can you please tell me what youâre going to do then?â
âIâm going to play on the blanket.â
âAnd what if you want to leave?â
âI ask Daddy.â
âWhy?â
Junyiâs face screwed into a pout as he tried to remember. âI forgot, âm sorryâŠâ
âThatâs okay, buddy. Itâs so we can be safe,â Mr. Qian repeated it for him. âNow, why are we going to stay on the blanket?â
âSo we can be safe.â
âGood, buddy,â He ruffled his sonâs hair. âNow go play, Iâll be right here at this table.â
The man stood up straight again, his eyes flicking over you briefly as he began organizing the sweets on the table.
âGood morning, Ms. Y/L/N. Woobin is welcome to play on the mat with Junyi during the shift, if youâre comfortable with that, of course.â
âOh, thank you.â You led Woobin over to the mat as well. âBinnie, Mommy is going to be working for a while at this table. Your job is to stay on the playmat with Junyi, so that you two can stay safe, okay? You cannot leave the playmat without Mommy.â
âOkay, Mommy.â
âSo tell me, what are you going to do?â
âPlay with Junyi.â
âWhere?â
âOn the playmat.â
âCan you show Mommy what all the playmat is?â
He pointed to the edges of the yellow and blue blanket for you.
âAnd are you going to leave it without Mommy?â
âNo.â
âWhy?â
âSo I can be safe.â
You grinned at him, âThank you, bubbles. Go play, baby. Call for Mommy if you need me, okay?â
âOkay.â
After depositing a few more toys that you had brought along for Woobin on the mat, you returned to where Mr. Qian was setting out the food.
âHere,â he held a tray of brownies out to you. âThese will go there, right in front of you.â
âOh, got it.â You set them down exactly where he gestured. âSo, you signed up for set up and the first shift?â
âIâm actually helping to run the Bake Sale, so Iâm setting up, breaking down, and filling in for whichever slots nobody signed up for.â
âWait, did you bake these, too?â
âOnly the ones in containers with the green lids. Other parents contributed too.â
You looked over the baked goods he had indicated. All the ones in the green containers looked the best, you had considered in the back of your mind that one of the richer parents might have just bought them from a bakery and brought them in instead of baking themselves.
Sneaking a glance at the man beside you, you then panicked when you realized that he was already looking at you, expectantly holding out a plate of frosted sugar cookies.
âHere, next to the brownies.â
âRight, on it.â
Mr. Qian cleared his throat, âI am surprised, Ms. Y/L/N⊠that youâre allowing Woobin to play with Junyi.â
âIâve also allowed him back at school for the past month, Mr. Qian.â You pointed out. âAs I said, my issue has never been with Junyi, but with how the school handled the entire situation.â
âHm.â
You let out a short sigh, âThough, I am sorry for some of the things I said at that meeting, they were out of line.â
âSome? May I inquire about which ones?â
âThe chew toy thingâŠâ
âOh, yes.â
âAnd the whole âmy concern over my childâs safety not being an affront to your relationship with yours.â That was seriously⊠awful of me. Just so pretentious,â you breathed out, feeling ashamed as you relived your words. But if you were to ever expect to teach your son humility and owning up to his mistakes, you had to practice it yourself. âI said I wasnât there to comment on your parenting and then I did exactly that in the exact same breath. Iâm sorry, Mr. Qian, and I hope you can believe me when I say that.â
He held your gaze steadily, âI forgive you, Ms. Y/L/N.â
âEverything else I said, though, I stand by,â you reaffirmed pointedly.
âI understand,â he nodded.
You were pretty sure the festival had officially opened, as families had begun filtering in. Some were slowing down as they passed by your table to skim their eyes over your offerings, but none had stopped so far. So you were still just stuck there with Qian Kun and the overwhelming silence that felt like it was damn near suffocating you.
âSo, what do you do for a living?â You finally decided to ask. If you werenât going to be holding a grudge against the guy, you might as well make small talk.
âIâm in sales.â
Okay, small talk was not his forte. This was going to be like pulling teeth.
âWell it seems like they put the Bake Sale table in good hands, then.â
âWhat about you?â At least he understood reciprocity.
âPublishing.â Yeah, you werenât any better than him. You stumbled to add on more information, âUh, Iâm a copy editor.â
âIs that like a proof reader?â
âPretty much, yeah.â
And at that moment, your blessed first customers walked up to your booth, a group of high school students, and you leapt at the opportunity to get out of that awkward conversation.
When your hour shift was finally over, you gleefully picked Woobin and his toys up from the playmat, took your two free ride tickets from Mr. Qian, and waved goodbye to him and the new volunteer parent who had shown up to take over your slot.
âAlright, Binnie, the Fall Festival is our oyster,â you looked it over with shining eyes. âWhat should we do first?â
Two hours later, and you were just finishing up your slightly late lunch. You scrolled through the delightful pictures that youâd taken of you and Woobin on the Ferris Wheel, sending a couple to your parents before tucking your phone away.
âDessert sounds good, donât you think?â You suggested to Woobin, and the Bake Sale popped into your mind. Those desserts that Mr. Qian made had looked really good, and you werenât able to try any when you were working the table this morningâŠ
âPlease, Mommy?â
âYou didnât even need to ask, bubbles, Mommy wants some dessert too,â you admitted, taking his hand in yours. âI think we should go get some of those sweets that Junyiâs dad made. How does that sound? Did you see them earlier?â
There was a short line that you bumped up against at the Bake Sale table, just a couple families ahead of you. When you finally got to the front, your greeting to Mr. Qian stopped in your throat as you took in the empty spot beside him.
âAre you all by yourself, Mr. Qian?â You craned your neck to look around for signs of another parent.
He let out a tired sigh very clearly from deep within, eyes conveying a harrowed, ominous kind of exhaustion, âIt seems as though the parent who signed up for the last four slots has skipped out on me. Been by myself for the past thirty minutes or so. I gave up on him about fifteen minutes ago.â
With a resolute nod, you hoisted your son up onto your hip and slid around to the other side of the table to stand beside Mr. Qian, âBinnie and I will finish the day out with you two then.â
âNo, Ms. Y/L/N, you really donât have to. Iâm sure you have things to do, and I can run a preschool Bake Sale by myself.â
âJunyi! Come play with Woobin over here please!â You called after the little boy that youâd spotted toddling a little too far away from the playmat for comfort.
The man whipped around as his son came waddling back over at the sound of his name, clearly unaware that he had just wandered off. He squatted down to chastise the boy, reminding him to stay on the blanket. Junyi nodded, plopping down with his toys.
âIâm not leaving you out to dry, Kun,â you told the father frankly, sitting Woobin and his toys back down on the playmat too.
He gave you a frazzled smile, âThanks, Y/N.â
Another couple hours passed by of you and Kun jointly running the Bake Sale table. Word had apparently spread since the first hour that youâd done with him in the morning, and the treats were extremely popular. Your line was never empty for more than a minute or two, and often times wrapped past other booths. Now you could see why Kun was so out of it when you had gotten there, he had been doing this by himself, even for just thirty minutes, with Junyi there.
The two of you fell into a symbiotic rhythm of taking orders, payment, handing out food, and keeping an eye on the two boys with you.
In a rare, brief lull between customers, you were caught off-guard when it was also quiet behind you. The telltale giggles, babbling, and nonsense conversation of Woobin and Junyi had faded out. You frowned thoughtfully as you finished rearranging the brownies in front of you, about to turn around to investigate anyway when a heart-wrenching wail pierced the still air. Immediately, you went to jerk around to comfort your crying Woobin, but were stopped in your tracks, so caught off-guard to see that it wasnât your son sobbing. He was standing in front of Junyi, who was sat on the playmat, half-crying and half-screaming his head off.
Kun couldnât get the cash in his hand into the register fast enough, and you rushed over to try to get Woobin to at least back up. Crowding Junyi definitely wasnât going to help.
But you stopped as you realized that Woobin was talking to the other boy.
âJunyi, scary or boo-boo?â Woobin quietly asked him. After he didnât get a reply, he asked again, âScary or boo-boo?â
Junyi managed to blubber out, âScary!â
Kun had finally arrived on the playmat while you watched on with wide, bewildered, and awestruck eyes as Woobin gave Junyi a big hug. The dad looked even more confused than you.
âWhatâs going on?â
You held up a finger for him to wait a moment, then turned to your son, âBinnie, do you know what happened to Junyi? Why is he having a scary cry?â
âJunyi fell down, Mommy,â he answered you dutifully.
âOkay, thank you,â you nodded to him. Looking at Kun, you explained, âSeems like Junyi just fell down. I donât think heâs hurt, it just gave him a scare.â
âDaddy!â Junyi whimpered, and Kun gently extracted him from the other toddlerâs arms to bring him into his own. Cradling his son, Kun murmured soft reassurances to him as the boy clung to his neck.
âUh, thank you, Woobin,â he nodded to your son. âIâve got Junyi from here.â
âYouâre welcome,â Woobin replied, but you could see the moistness gathering in his eyes too. Oh, your big-hearted kid.
Both you and Kun brought your respective kids back to the table with you, sitting in the pop-up chairs with them in your laps. The two of you were quiet until Junyiâs sobs had simmered down into little hiccups, and you could feel that Woobinâs breathing had evened out into a nap.
âOkay, how did you do that?â Kun whispered at you.
âDo what?â You replied just as quietly.
âGet Woobin to do what he just did.â
âBy asking him the exact same question pretty much every single time heâs cried for the past three years,â you answered honestly. âAnd he didnât use to even answer me, much less ask other people that. Thatâs the first time heâs ever done that, actually.â
âHuhâŠâ
Mr. Suh and Mr. Jeong came back an hour and a half later to help break down the table. It had been a pretty successful endeavor, if you did say so yourself, as there were only a handful of treats left, which you and Kun offered to a group of high schoolers who came by after break-down.
With everything packed up except the cash drawer, Kun turned to you with finality, âIâve just got to drop this off with the front office and thatâll be it. Thanks, Y/N. You and Woobin were a big help today.â
âOf course. Sorry about that parent who skipped out on you. Who was it, anyway?â
âA⊠Mr. Nakamoto?â Kun read off the paper. âIâve never heard of him.â
âI think Iâve chatted with him in the lobby a couple times. His sonâs in the two-year-old class if I remember correctly?â You strained your memory, then gave up. âOh, whatever. Maybe he just had an emergency or something.â
âThatâs one way to look at it.â
âAnyway, have a goodnight, Kun, Junyi,â you nodded to the two of them, then squeezed your sonâs hand. âBinnie, weâre leaving, do you want to say something to Junyi and Mr. Qian?â
Your son perked up, giving the two of them a bright smile and big wave, âGoodbye!â
âJunyi?â Kun prompted his son from where he was tucked into the fatherâs chest. âTell Ms. Y/L/N and Woobin goodbye, you wonât see Woobin until Monday.â
âBye, Woobin. Bye⊠Ms. Y/L/N.â Junyi said in between yawns, rubbing at his eyes. Poor guy seemed absolutely tuckered out.
âGoodnight,â Kun gave you one last nod before heading towards the school, and you and Woobin took off towards your car.
Monday morning you released Woobinâs hand to let him scamper into his classroom, giving Ms. Xu a wave of acknowledgement as you signed the morning drop-off sheet by the door. You were about to take off for work when a hand grabbed your elbow, and you hadnât even realized that Ms. Xu had approached you, all too focused on heading to work.
âMs. Y/N!â
âAh, Ms. Xu, good morning,â you greeted her. âIs something the matter?â
âNo, I just wanted to thank you for pitching in with the Bake Sale on Saturday. Mr. Qian informed us that he wouldnât have been able to pull it off without your help.â
You looked around for Kun. You were only able to spot Junyi, however, coloring with Woobin at a table. Seems like heâd already come and gone. Great, now you had a reputation for being a helpful mom.
You shook off both her hand and her praise, âOh, really Mr. Qian is exaggerating. He works in sales, did you know? Honestly didnât need my help.â
âWell, whatever you two did, it was our most successful Bake Saleâwell, any kind of fundraising eventâfor the preschool ever! And, we were wondering if the two of you would consider getting more involved in some parent leadership positions at the school? The preschool PTA have been trying to get a fundraising committee off the ground, and we really think that you two would do a fantastic job spearheadingââ
You must have had some kind of look on your face, as Ms. Xu suddenly stopped dead in the middle of her sentence, entirely switching trains of thought. Keeping her same peppy tone and bright, hopeful smile, she said, âI am so sorry to have thrown so much at you. You must have to be getting to work. Why donât we talk about it later when you come pick Woobin up? All of us, Mr. Qian, too. Goodbye, Ms. Y/N!â
And with that you were ushered out of the door, utterly dumbfounded at what had just happened.
That afternoon, you squared your shoulders and steeled your nerves as you approached the preschool doors. You had to keep your resolution firm: you were absolutely not going to be joining any sort of PTA, fundraising committee, or parent leadership position. The only thing that you were going to be spearheading was cracking open the bottle of wine that was waiting for you at your apartment tonight.
You were a little earlier than you usually were for pick-up, which you had done on purpose, needing to clear the air with a certain Mr. Qian Kun. Immediately homing in on the man, you made a beeline for him. He noticed you, his friendly hand falling as he seemed to notice the set of your brow.
âGood afternoon, Yââ
âQian Kun,â you cut him off sternly. âDo you care to tell me why I was voluntold for a position spearheading a fundraising committee this morning?â
âOh, that. Look, it came as a surprise to me too,â he tried to assuage you.
âWhy the hell did my name even come out of your mouth in such a discussion in the first place?â
âBecause they were praising me on how well the Bake Sale went, and I was making sure you got the credit that you deserved too. Are you upset about that? If so, Iâm sorry? I guess?â
âYou listen to the words coming out of my mouth: I will be a PTA mom over your dead body,â you hissed, scooching in to take the spot on the bench beside him and free up more standing space for the parents coming in.
âOkay, letâs take a step back from the threats, maybe, Y/N,â Kun suggested, holding his hands up in both a defensive and âare you kidding me?â gesture. âWhatâs so awful about being a PTA parent in the first place?â
âFree labor for so little reward, and I donât have the time for that. Do you?â
âWe havenât even heard their proposal; we donât know what theyâd be wanting us to do.â
ââSpearheading a committeeâ sounds like a part-time job at least.â
âAlright, well, didnât Ms. Xu tell you that you and I held the most successful fundraising event the preschoolâs ever had? And that wasnât even with us making a concerted effort, either, that was just some random mid-grade effort Bake Sale. Imagine what we could do if we really go for it.â
âYou work in sales, huh?â You deadpanned after his little pitch was finished. The one-year-old class opened for dismissal, and you leaned in towards him to continue your fervent conversation in a more hushed voice, âAnd canât even realize when youâre the one being sold to! You do know that this campus has a bunch of filthy rich donors, right? Theyâre not hard pressed for cash, they just give the high school priority, then the middle school, primary, and the preschool gets the leftoversâif thereâs even anyâforcing it to have to fundraise for itself.â
âIsnât that all the more reason to do this, then?â Kun pushed back.
âWe could do a hundred Bake Sales and it wouldnât make up the difference between the scraps the preschool gets and the millions that the high school does. No, it would be all the more reason for us to go find our own filthy rich donor who would put a stipulation on their donation for it to be used exclusively for the preschool.â
âOh.â
âYouâve got to think bigger about this, Kun,â you knocked on his forehead with two of your knuckles as best you could in the narrow space between the two of you. âGod. You said you work in sales, what do you even do?â
He rubbed at the back of his neck sheepishly, red tinging the tips of his ears, âWould you believe me if I said Iâm a Director of Sales?â
âNo,â you snorted.
âThatâs fair.â
âSo anyway, glad weâre on the same page about saying no to this.â You went to lean away from him and put some pep back into your tone, watching as the two-year-old class was dismissed next.
âWhat? Iââ he looked around, it was only the three-year-old parents left in the lobby now. You sighed, scooting back over to sit shoulder-to-shoulder again for him to be able to continue in a hushed voice, âI thought we were going to find a donor for the preschool.â
âYou want us to go in there, and say yes to leading the preschool PTAâs fundraising committee on the condition that its sole mission is to stage a coup within the financial hierarchy of the campus?â
âOkay well when you say it like thatââ
âIâm in.â You grinned at him. âAs long as you were being serious about the Director of Sales thing.â
âI was,â he fished out a business card from his wallet to hand to you.
Qian Kun, Director of Sales, WeiShen, Inc.
And below that was his email, office phone line, and fax number. You gave it back to him.
âPerfect. Those connections will come in handy.â
The door to the three-year-old classroom swung open just then, and you got to your feet.
âAlright, Mr. Qian, ready to go start the cutest coup the world has ever seen?â You offered your hand to him.
He stood up alongside you, giving your hand a firm shake, âYes, absolutely, Ms. Y/L/N. Theyâll never know what hit them.â
While Mrs. Chen and Ms. Xu were definitely caught off-guard by your idea, after getting over their initial shock, they were surprisingly on-board with it. They requested that you two bring in a more formal proposal to the next preschool PTA meetingâ next Wednesday. That gave you nine days.
âSo how did you know all that, about the donors and distribution structure of the funds?â Kun asked as you walked out into the empty preschool lobby.
âI did my research before picking a preschool for Woobin. Itâs all there on the Internet if you dig deep enough, and are somewhat adept at reading through the legal bullââ You cut yourself off, looking down at the two toddlers with you. Kun pushed the front door open for you, and you quietly thanked him as you led Woobin through it before resuming your train of thought, âItâs obviously not in any of the advertising stuff for prospective parents, but for prospective donors, investors; the corporate materials.â
The four of you stopped in front of the building, where the small parking lot was.
âSo then why did you enroll him here, even knowing about how they treat the preschool with the donations?â
âThe high school is the best in the area, and the easiest way to guarantee admission is to graduate in from their middle school. Easiest way to get into the middle school is to graduate in from the primary school.â
âAnd the easiest way into the primary school is through the preschool,â the dad surmised.
âBingo. Iâm keeping Binnieâs options open,â you squeezed your sonâs hand affectionately. âHe doesnât have to go there, but Iâm making sure he can if he wants.â
Kunâs eyebrows shot up, âWow. Thatâs some really forward thinking.â
You tilted your head curiously, âSo whyâd you choose to send Junyi here?â
âIt was the closest to my place.â
âPractical, thatâs more than fair.â
âSpeaking of, Junyi and I should get going, we have to pick up a couple things from the store for dinner tonight and buddy already looks like heâs not going to last the two block walk there.â He looked down at his son, who was very quiet, glassy eyes fixed on his feet.
You nodded in understanding, âOf course, Binnie and I have a wine night planned.â
âIâm sorry, a what?â
âOh, Binnie gets grape juice and I have red wine in matching cups. He likes to feel included.â
âDoes he get a matching kiddie charcuterie board too?â Kun chuckled to himself as he hoisted Junyi up onto his hip.
âNo, he just takes what he wants off of mine.â
He gave you a blank stare, âI canât tell if youâre pulling my leg or not.â
âLook, he insists on trying whatever I have, and he ends up liking a lot of it,â you shrugged. âHeâs the only 3-year-old I know who asks for tapenade as a snack.â
âYouâre being serious?â He checked again.
âYes,â you laughed. Then, before you knew it, the next words coming out of your mouth were, âYou know, you and Junyi should join Binnie and I for a charcuterie night. Iâll prepare actual kid-friendly stuff, too, for Junyi.â
Kunâs head jerked back just the slightest, and he blinked a couple times before asking, âUh, just you and Woobin?â
âYeah, isâ Would that, uh, be a problem?â The offer had felt perfectly normal and natural for you to make in the moment, but his reaction was making you second guess and stammer. You rushed to tack on, âWe canâ Itâll be for the fundraising committee, you know.â
âRight, right, of course.â His voice was filled with shaky relief.
âOf course,â you echoed, offering a strained smile.
âAs long as thatâs not a problem forâfor you.â
âWhy would it be a problem for me? I invited you.â
âI donâtâ That sounds great, thank you, Y/N.â
Desperately wanting to get out of the plane crash that you had inadvertently taken this conversation into, you readjusted your purse on your shoulder decidedly, âOf course. Uhm, well, we wonât hold you two up from the store anymore, it looks like Junyiâs about to fall asleep on you right now. Weâll see you tomorrow.â
Kun looked down at Junyiâs head that had been resting against his chest, the boyâs eyes beginning to flutter shut, âOh, God, there he goes. Bye, Y/N, Woobin!â
And the man was around the corner before Woobin could even lift his little hand to wave.
âSo whatâs the big deal, Y/N?â
âWell because I feel stupid now, Sooyoung,â you ranted to your friend over the phone that night as you washed up the dishes from dinner. âIt felt like I was maybe finally getting my first like, parent friend, you know? And then he got all weird as soon as I invited him to hang out. I wasnât being weird, was I? It was practically a playdate invite!â
Woobin had been put to bed a few minutes ago, and you were recounting the horrible nosedive that your conversation with Kun had taken, needing to know that you werenât crazy.
âY/NâŠâ Sooyoungâs voice was patient as it came through your speakers. âNow, I can only guess, because I am, as we know, not a parent friend. But⊠is he married?â
 âHuh?â The plate in your hand nearly slipped out of your soapy grip.
âWedding ring, seen one?â
You wracked your brain, trying to remember if youâd ever really looked at Kunâs hands that closely, âUh, not that I can remember?â
âOkay. You ever met the mom?â
âNo, itâs always Kun who picks Junyi up.â
âHas a mom or another parent or partner ever been mentioned at all?â
âSooyoung, the point,â you requested sternly, having a sneaking suspicion as to what it was.
âIâm just saying, maybe he got all weird because he thought you were flirting.â
âOh my God,â you sighed and ran a hand through your hair before realizing that it was still soapy. âGod damn it!â
âY/N?â
You grabbed some paper towels to clean the suds off your head, âYeah, still here, sorry.â
âAnyway⊠is he cute?â
âSooSoo, I donât even think I could flirt on purpose at this point,â you chuckled cynically, going back to your chore. âThat muscleâs long shriveled up. I just need to time skip to being married with two kids, I think.â
Your friend laughed along with you, âFair. But, that doesnât sound like a no. Kinda sounds like avoiding the question, actually.â
âSooyoung.â
âOoh, you gonna send me to my room?â She taunted you, and you could hear her pout through the phone. âPut me in time out?â
âYouâd like that, you little freak,â you snickered, picking up your next dish.
That Saturday afternoon you and Woobin had welcomed Kun and Junyi into your apartment with giddy nerves. Woobin was excited, and you were excited for him. This would be pretty much his first playdate with a kid that he wasnât related to. And you had all the nerves, as this was your first time having a parent friend over, too. Not to mention that Sooyoungâs words were still bouncing around in the back of your head. When Kun held out a bottle of red wine to you with his left hand, you looked extra hard at his fingersâ yep, no ring.
âOh, Kun, you didnât have to,â you took it from him gladly, ushering the two of them further into your home.
âYouâre hosting and making us a charcuterie board. I figured wine was appropriate,â he explained.
âWell, thank you. This is perfect.â
Woobin was right where youâd left him in the living room on his playmat among his toys.
âBinnie,â you said, waiting until he looked up at you before continuing, âMr. Qian and Junyi are here, so weâre going to eat now, remember?â
He nodded, immediately standing up and beginning to shovel toys off to one side of his mat. You helped him slide the mat to the corner of the room.
âUh, weâre just going to eat around the coffee table, if thatâs alright,â you explained, gesturing to the cleared table in the middle of the living room.
âYeah, of course,â Kun nodded.
âGreat, great. Dining table kind of has a partially built LEGO set on it right now,â you chuckled as you set the wine bottle down. âIâm going to grab everything from the kitchen, be back in a second.â
âOh, Iâll help.â
âNo, thatâs okay, Iâve already got a little helper,â you held a hand out expectantly towards your son. Woobin immediately grabbed your hand, looking up at you. You gave Kun a quick smile, âBe back in a sec.â
In the kitchen, you handed Woobin his spill-proof cup, then another for Junyi. You fit two wine glasses by the stems and a corkscrew in one hand, and grabbed the charcuterie board with the other. Gently nudging your toddler ahead of you, the two of you headed back out to the living room, where your guests were waiting.
Kun and Junyi had sat down on one side of the table, and you gently placed the food down in front of them, then one wine glass in front of Kun. You looked to your son, who handed the correct cup to Junyi.
âItâs just water,â you informed the dad. âWe have juice too, if he can have it. I never know about allergies and the like so I didnât want to assume.â
âJuice?â Woobin looked up at you with wide eyes.
âYours is already grape juice, Binnie,â you informed him with a head pat.
Kun rubbed his sonâs back, âWaterâs fine for him, he had a juice box this morning. Thanks.â
You and Woobin sat opposite from the father and son, Woobin immediately clambering into your lap. As you went to uncork the wine, Kun looked over the board in front of you all. You had made sure to prepare some kid-friendly options in one corner in addition to your usual refined spread.
âThis all looks fantastic, Y/N. Thank you, seriously,â Kun smiled, and you swore that was the first time youâd noticed a deep dimple appear on both of his cheeks.
You poured first for him, then yourself, âOf course. Thank you two for coming over, Woobin and I were both excited to host for someone. Right, Binnie?â
âWhat, Mommy?â Woobin looked up at you with a scrunched nose.
ââHost.ââ You repeated the unfamiliar word for him, then clarified your question, âAre you excited to have Junyi and Mr. Qian over?â
âOh! Yes!â He nodded his head so fast you could feel the rest of his little body shake in your lap. âCan I show Junyi my room, Mommy?â
âAfter you two eat some, okay?â
âOkay!â
âDid you hear that, Junyi? After you eat, you and Woobin can play.â Kun gently prodded his son, then looked up at you apologetically when all the child did was yawn. âSorry, he just woke up from a nap before coming over.â
âThatâs okay,â you giggled, cutting off a piece of cheese and pressing it onto a cracker, then making another serving of the same cheese and cracker. You handed one to Woobin, keeping the other for yourself.
Woobin eagerly took a bite of the cheese and cracker youâd given him, washing it down with his grape juice.
Kun offered a bear-shaped cookie out to Junyi, who shook his head. The dad sighed, and pointed at a banana slice, then blueberry, then cheddar cheese slice that youâd cut into small star shapes. They all got head shakes.
âAre you hungry at all, buddy?â
âYes!â
âThen what do you want? Ms. Y/L/N made sure to put out all that food just for you. I donât think you want what Daddy is eating, buddy. Itâs grown-up food.â
You chewed on the inside of your cheek, unsure of if you should speak up. It seemed like they both needed help, but you werenât one to try to interject your own parenting if it wasnât asked for.
Junyi squirmed in his dadâs arms for a moment before mumbling, âBut Woobinâs eating itâŠâ
Meanwhile Woobin had in fact helped himself to a kalamata olive, pre-pitted, happily munching away.
Kun seemed at a loss, rubbing at his brow, and you finally decided to jump in.
âJunyi, you can try some, too,â you told him encouragingly, leaning forward and reaching over the board. âDo you want to try the cheese Woobin was eating or the olive he just had? Or both?â
âCheese, please.â
You cut off a small piece of the gouda, âHere you go.â
He took it in his small hands, âThank you!â
âYouâre welcome.â
You watched in amusement as Junyi ate the cheese, his features lighting up.
âDid you like it?â
âYes! Can I try the olive?â
âHeyâŠâ Kunâs voice held a slight warning as he pinched his sonâs side.
âCan I try the olive please?â
âThank you.â The dad patted the boyâs head before reaching around him for the glass of wine on the table.
You handed him an olive, both you and Kun watching with interest as he popped it into his mouth whole. Junyiâs face immediately screwed up in disgust. Without missing a beat, Kun held up a cupped palm with another short sigh, letting his son spit the food back out. Trying to hold back your giggles, you handed the dad a napkin.
âThanks,â he accepted it, depositing the olive into the paper, and wiping his hand off.
After some more broadening of Junyiâs horizonsâto mixed resultsâthe board was mostly clear, and the kids had declared themselves full.
âCan I show Junyi my room now?â Woobin asked excitedly.
âSure, Binnie. You two can go play,â you nodded, and he immediately scrambled off your lap. You held out a hand for him to use to balance himself as you kept talking, âMr. Qian and I have some work to do, so weâll be in here if you need us, okay?â
âOkay!â Both toddlers said in unison.
âHey, look here,â Kun stopped his son before he could leave the room. The father waited until the boy was looking him in the eye before continuing, âRemember what we talked about before coming over? All week?â
Junyi nodded fervently.
âGood. Go have fun, buddy,â he ruffled his son's hair.
You watched the two of them speedwalk out excitedly, Woobin explaining the house rule of not being allowed to run because itâs not safe as they went.
Then it was just you and Kun. Sooyoungâs words echoed in the back of your mind.
âAlright, let me grab my laptop, then we can get to work,â you declared, getting to your feet.
A few hours later and the two of you had made good progress, only interrupted by the kids a few times here and there, mostly them wanting to show off toys or coloring pages, or Junyi had wandered in at one point seemingly just to make sure Kun was still there.
You had been adding something to your word document of notes when you realized that your house had been eerily quiet for too long. Fingertips hovering over the keys, you exchanged a suspicious look with Kun.
âToo quiet?â He asked knowingly.
âYeahâŠâ You frowned, setting your computer aside to get up.
Both of you treaded through your home until you got to Woobinâs bedroom. The door was open, and you were alarmed for a moment when you didnât see either boy anywhere on the floor playing. Until you recognized two lumps under the covers of his toddler bed, Woobin and Junyi looking like they were going to sleep for the next hundred years or so.
âOh, god, I am so sorry,â Kun shook his head, seeming about to go in there and grab his son.
You were between him and the room, however, and quickly turned the lights off and shut the door. âItâs okay, Kun. They just tuckered themselves out. Thatâs good.â
Latching onto his elbow, you pulled him back towards the living room, catching a glance at the time on the microwave as you went through the kitchen.
âDamn, itâs not even Binnieâs normal bedtime yet,â you chuckled.
You didnât let go of Kun until you had pulled him back down onto the couch, and then held his (second) glass of wine back out to him pointedly. He had a fond smile as he took it from you, and you happily accepted your victory as you picked yours back up too. You left your laptop on the coffee table, shifting to entirely face Kun as you raised your glass to your lips.
Kun took a sip.
You took a sip.
âDo you want to ask me something, Y/N?â Kun scratched the back of his neck.
âMm, sorry,â you apologized with a chuckle. âI zoned out on your face there, didnât I?â
âYeah, a bit,â he laughed.
âI was thinking, though.â
âWhat about?â
âYouâre a Director of SalesâŠâ
âSupposedly.â
âSupposedly,â you repeatedly humorously before moving on with your question. âDo you think weâve got a good chance at getting a donor for the preschool? If our proposal is approved by the PTA on Wednesday, of course.â
You had expected some kind of business musings, or serious answer from Kun, but instead you watched with concern as his brow furrowed, his fingers drummed along his knee, and he suddenly became fidgety, shifting around in his seat. He stayed quiet, once again scratching at the back of his neck, squinting one eye closed, then the other.
âKun?â You said his name hesitantly.
âSorry,â he shot you a familiar, frazzled smile that reminded you of when he was getting overwhelmed at the Bake Sale booth by himself. âI uhm, I donât know.â
âThatâs okay,â you reassured him. âI was just curious, itâs not life or death that you know everything all the time.â
He didnât even seem to hear you as he stood up, setting his wine glass down on the table. The dad began pacing back and forth in front of your couch, his hands laced together behind his neck.
âIâm good at my job.â
You wouldâve sworn he wasnât talking to you, except his wide, stressed eyes snapped up to you after he said that.
âIâm not your boss. You donât need to convince me, Kun,â you said slowly.
âI know, justâ with all this, itâs stuff that I should be good at, itâs right up my alley. But itâs for Junyi, and I want to be the best dad I can be for him that I just end up jumping into doing things without actually thinking about them first because other people are telling me thatâs what I need to do to be a good dad. I know how to be a good Director of Sales. I donât know how to be a good dad.â
âYou donât need to know everything,â you reiterated strongly, hoping he actually listened this time. âI donât know all the secrets for being a good mom. I just know how to be Woobinâs mom. You donât need to know all the secrets to being the best dad ever. The only thing you need to worry about is being Junyiâs dad. Does that seem a bit more manageable?â
Kunâs pacing slowed to a stop in front of you, âWell, I guess.â
âSo, the next time somebody is trying to sell you on some âDad Thing,â stop, breathe, and think: Is this what I, Qian Kun, as Junyiâs dad, need to do, to be?â
âOkayâŠâ he looked at you skeptically, closing his eyes for a moment. You watched as his shoulders rose and fell with a deep breath.
ââŠAre you doing it right now?â
âWell how else am I supposed to decide if this is a good thing to do or not?â
You let out a hearty laugh, âNo, thatâs perfect, Kun, go ahead.â
He closed his eyes again, and you watched with fond amusement as his eyebrows quirked up and down with his thoughts. You took another sip of your wine before he had finished, and he opened his eyes once more, giving you a firm nod, âOkay, yes, I think thatâs a thing that Junyi would need me to do.â
âGreat,â you smiled at him, tilting your wine glass out to him.
He picked his back up and clinked it to yours in a little cheers. You tipped the remainder of your drink back in one go.
âOh, that was good,â you declared. âThanks, Kun.â
âOf course, Y/N. Thank you for inviting us.â
âLike I said, Binnie and I were both really excited to host,â you took your empty glass into the kitchen to start cleaning up. âI donât know if this is bad, but he hasnât really had a lot of play dates that werenât like his cousins or something.â
âJunyi neither,â Kun admitted.
âItâs hard, isnât it?â You asked, starting to stack the plates. âKid, and work, and family, and friends, and everything else. And then youâre supposed to be in charge of your kidâs social life too?â
Youâd turned your back on him to bring the plates into the kitchen, expecting to hear his response to your question, but you were just met with silence. After depositing the dishes in the kitchen, you walked back out to the living room, alarmed to see that Kun had taken to pacing again.
Keeping a calm demeanor yourself, you kept going about your task, grabbing the charcuterie board, the last thing that needed to be tidied up. You had just started back towards the kitchen when Kun broke his silence.
âJunyiâs mother left us.â
You were so glad you had your back to Kun so he couldnât see your rueful wince. Oh, you were so going to regret this.
Relaxing your features into a more sympathetic frown, you turned around to face him, âIâm very sorry to hear that, Kun.â
This was going to be a lot, you could sense it, so you set the charcuterie board back down on your breakfast bar.
âSo just know that however hard it is for you and Woobinâs dad, itâs like ten times harder for me, and thatâs why Iâm alwaysââ
You had stopped listening to him, however, your brain turning to white noise after the phrase âWoobinâs dad.â
âWait, do you think Iâm married?â You blurted out over him.
âWell, no, I can see that you donât have a ring,â Kun gestured down to your hands. âBut a boyfriend or another significant other. Iâm doing this solo andââ
âIâm a single parent too!â
âWhat?â He seemed dumbfounded.
You couldnât tell if you wanted to laugh or cry more at how ridiculous this was.
âWoobinâs dad was a one-night stand! I canât remember the guyâs name, or what he looks like. Couldnât find him if I wanted to. I donât have a partner now, either. What on Earth made you think I was anything other than a single mom? Youâre in my home!â You gestured around wildly to where there were multiple pictures of your family, of you and Woobin, but none of you, Woobin, and any man that could reasonably be considered his father.
âWell youâre justâ youâve gotâ at the meetingâ youâre so put together,â Kun stammered out, his voice getting smaller and smaller. He ran a hand through his hair, âYouâre not falling apart at the seams like I am.â
âKun.â You grabbed him by the shoulders, stopping his frenzied pacing. âLook me in the eye.â
It wasnât really like he had a choice, you were now holding his face just a couple inches from yours, but he still followed your command.
âGood,â you praised him, keeping your voice soothing. âI want you to take three deep breaths with me.â
He followed along as you inhaled, exhaled, inhaled, exhaled, inhaled, and finally exhaled again together.
âAlright, thank you,â your voice was still sweet and calm as you ran your hands back down to his shoulders. âNow⊠why the fuck do you think I am more put together than you, Qian Kun?â
âEverything,â he breathed out, hanging his head.
âGod, Kun,â you sighed, seizing him by the wrist. âCome on.â
You led him into your dining room, where there was in fact a half-built LEGO set on your dining room table. But that wasnât your goal. On the bookshelf in there, you grabbed a specific picture frame, and took it and Kun back to the living room.
Sitting down side-by-side with Kun on the couch, you held the picture out in front of the two of you. It was of you and Woobin just over three years ago now, the first night you came home from the hospital. Your mother had taken it. He was swaddled in his baby blue blanket, all chubby cheeks, and you looked dead tired, but an excited sparkle was still in your eyes as you grinned down at your son.
âLook, Kun. I used to feel like that too. All the time. Almost every day when I was pregnant,â you relayed to him.
âBut not anymore?â He questioned hesitantly.
âSometimes. But not like before. Because I realized that Iâm not doing this by myself.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI may be a single mom, but Iâm not alone, I have Binnie. And isnât that the whole point? To be there for them? To make sure they know theyâre not doing it alone either?â
Kun was quiet, his eyes still focused on the picture.
You continued, âIâm lucky enough to have my parents as a good support system, and some friends I can call up in case of emergency too. But I remember when I found out I was going to have Woobin, and I decided to keep him, I was scared of doing it by myself. Terrified, might be a better word.â
âWhen I came home from the hospital with him, my mom stayed with us for the first couple weeks.â You tapped the frame. âAnd the first night after she left, when it really was just the two of us, I was expecting this overwhelming sense of loneliness, and instead I just felt⊠full. I know I had all those birthing hormones in me, oxytocin and whatnot, but I looked down at him and I realized I wasnât alone, and I wasnât ever going to be in all this because I have Binnie.â
âIâve never thought about it like that,â Kun finally spoke again.
Thinking about your cousinâs approach to parenting, you guessed, âYouâve always thought about him as the adversary?â
âNot exactly. Junyiâs more like a tiny roommate that I have to dress and feed and keep from accidentally dying.â
âIâd love to see pizza and beer night at your place.â You joked, laughing when you managed to get a small smile out of Kun again. âDoes Junyi get his in a sippy?â
âYou jest, but I have poured myself two fingers of whiskey into a Winnie the Pooh sippy cup before because it was the only clean drinking vessel we had.â He rubbed at his temples, then clarified, âWith the lid off.â
âDesperate times call for desperate measures.â You patted his back, reaching across him to set the frame down on the side table by another one that was displayed there.
âThanks, Y/N.â Kunâs eyes followed you as you sat back down, suddenly much closer than you remembered being before. Or were you just more aware of your proximity?
He patted your knee. âSeriously, that made me feel a lot better.â
âOfââ You cleared your throat to get rid of the squeak that was now in your voice. âOf course.â
Your skin tingled. Holy shit, youâd only had two glasses of wine spread across several hours, there was no way you should even be remotely buzzed. Kun was still looking at you. Were his eyes always this dark, this inviting?
God, he really was handsome. Youâd always known that, thought that, since the moment you saw him in the lobby of the preschool. But something about now, having him in your home, so close, alone, you felt like you couldnât take your eyes off of him. He wet his lips seemingly instinctually, and for a moment your brain short-circuited.
âDaddy?â A small voice made both you and Kun jump in your seats. You bit your tongue in surprise, hissing in pain as you and the dad simultaneously scooted away from each other. Junyi was standing at the threshold of the living room, rubbing one of his eyes sleepily.
âHey, buddy.â Kun waved his son over with a smile. âIs everything okay?â
Junyi walked over, stopping in front of his dad, a small pout on his face. âI woke up and didnât see you...â
âOh, buddy,â Kun rubbed the toddlerâs back. âSounds like itâs about time for us to go home, huh?â
You smiled at the both of them, hoping they couldnât see how frazzled you felt through it. âOf course, itâs late. I think weâre uh, weâre all tired. Junyi, is Woobin awake?â
The boy shook his head no.
âOkay, thank you.â You stood up, grabbing the wine glasses as Kun picked his son up.
You sent them off with a quick goodbye at your front door, and let out a deep sigh of relief once youâd closed it behind them. There werenât many dishes to take care of in the kitchen, but you still took your time scrubbing at them, then tiptoed down the hall to check in on your son. He was in fact sound asleep, and you quietly went to retire in your own room for the night.
Except once you were in your own bed, sleep didnât find you easy. You still saw Kun whether your eyes were open or closed, and you could feel the ghost of his warm hand on your skin. You rolled over into the center of the empty expanse of your bed, burying your face in your pillow, and let out a groan. You so needed to get laid. Thatâs all this was, you had set aside your own needs for your familyâs and as soon as you saw one attractive guy, you couldnât function. There were more important things to focus on with Kun, like the fundraising.
And so you went to sleep with thoughts of spreadsheets, Kunâs dark eyes, numbers, Kunâs warm hands on you, fundraising pitches, and Qian Kun running through your mind.
The fundraising pitch was a hit. Yours and Kunâs PTA committee was approved at the very same meeting, and you two were made co-directors effective immediately.
Afterwards, you, Kun, Woobin, and Junyi all walked out together, and while Kun seemed to be basking in the exhilaration of success, you were shell-shocked with a harrowing realization.
âY/N?â Kun gently touched your arm, voice tinged with concern.
You looked up at him, horrified. âIâm a PTA mom now, arenât I?â
He seemed to be holding back his laughter as he patted your shoulder. âI think you are. My condolences. Please donât kill me.â
âUnfortunately, I donât think I can dispose of my co-director so easily now.â
He was grinning at you. âAh, didnât realize that title came with such high protections.â
You rolled your eyes, but found your mood lifting anyway. âYeah, yeah. Anyway, you mentioned that you had something exciting, but only if we got approval?â
âRight!â Kun let go of Junyiâs hand to reach into the interior pocket of his suit jacket. He retrieved a crisp cream envelope, about the size of his hand. His name was embossed on the front of it in gold lettering.
You looked at him with an eyebrow raised. âYou got a wedding invite?â
âClose.â He opened the envelope, holding out the contents to you. You set Woobin down, murmuring a quiet request for him to stay by you all so you could take the card in both your hands. The front of the card had an unfamiliar crest on it, and you opened it to read the inside.
âThe United Publishing Society is honored to invite Mr. Qian Kun and a guest to their 89th Annual Benefactor Galaâ
And below that was the date, time, location, and dress code. Black tie formal.
âA fancy networking event?â You questioned, handing it back to him.
âNo,â he shook his head very seriously. âThese are all the old industry bigwigs who want to get together without all that schmoozy networking and ladder-climbing stuff going on. You and I are probably going to be the youngest ones there by a couple decades.â
âWait you and me?â
âYep. âMr. Qian Kun and a guest.ââ He recited off the invite. âYouâre my guest.â
âUhm...â
âI happen to know that one of the guys attending is also on the board of a non-profit that donates exclusively to childrenâs causes. Building pediatric cancer centers, juvenile intervention centers, the whole nine. I think heâll be our best bet for a donor.â
You narrowed your eyes suspiciously. âBut you just said they want to get together without networking and all that kind of stuff. Why would we be any different?â
âItâs a charity gala, theyâre already there to write checks anyway. Weâre not going to be asking him for a job.â
Itâs not you were exactly overflowing with any options. âWhen was that again?â
âWhat do we think?â You did a spin for your small audience of Woobin and Sooyoung. âGood enough for black tie formal?â
Tonight was the night of the gala Kun was taking you along to, and you sort of felt like you were going to throw up. And pass out. In that order. First of all, you had never been to a gala, you couldnât remember if you had ever gone to something with a black tie formal dress code (you literally had to go out and buy this outfit), not to mention that you felt awful for having to ask your friend to babysit. But unfortunately your parents were out of town and all of your normal babysitters were busy. Sooyoung had already let you (jokingly) know that this was under duress, and that you owed herâdespite turning down the money you offered her.
Sooyoung wolf-whistled at you, and you gave her a pointed look. Not the example you wanted to set for your son. Woobin looked up from his toys at the sound, and clapped for you.
âYou look great, Y/N!â Your friend reassured you, and you were thankful that she reigned her mouth in around your kid. Typically, you wouldâve gotten a much more explicit compliment from her. âShould be good for black tie. I mean, itâs not like you have any other option, right?â
âRight...â You groaned, turning back towards your room. âHold on, let me put the shoes on so you can see those.â
You were sitting on your bed pulling your shoes on when you heard your doorbell ring. Your stomach dropped as you looked over at the time on your bedside clock. Shit, Kun was early. You shouldâve anticipated that from the last time he was here.
âSoo! Can you get the door? Iâm still putting my shoes on!â You yelled out through the apartment.
âYep!â She called back.
You could vaguely hear the muffled voices of Sooyoung and Kunâand even Woobin at one pointâbut you were too focused on tugging your goddamn shoes on to care much about what they were saying. Just as you were finally standing up and straightening out your outfit, Sooyoung speedwalked into your bedroom, Woobin in her arms.
She had a smile filled with devilish delight on her face as she leaned in to whisper conspiratorially to you, âThat is Kun?â
âHuh? Yeah? Unless you let some strange man into my home that I donât know,â you replied, bewildered. âShould I have asked you to ID him?â
âI take back everything I said, you stay out as long as you want tonight. All night even,â she suggested, gesturing wildly with one hand as the other kept your toddler propped up on her hip. She pinched his cheek fondly. âBinBin and I can have a sleepover, right, buddy?â
Your sonâs face lit up with delight at the prospect. âSleepover?!â
Well aware of what your friend was implying, you did your best to regulate your outer emotions and intonation as you addressed your kid. You kept your tone kind but firm, âNo, Binnie, Iâm sorry.â Focusing your gaze on your friend, you added pointedly, âNobodyâs having a sleepover tonight.â
âY/N, come on. Youâve never denied yourself the finer things in life since becoming a mom. Why are you insisting on starting now?â Sooyoung sighed.
âIf youâll excuse me, I have a gala to attend. For the fundraising committee Iâm on.â
Walking through your apartment, you grabbed your purse from your dining room and finally found Kun in the foyer just a few steps from the front door. He was looking at a photo you had up on the wall, his back to you, so all you could see was his brown hair and dark suit.
âHi, Kun!â You hoped you didnât sound out of breath as you entered the room. Judging by the sound of footsteps behind you, Sooyoung had followed you in to see you off for the night.
Kun turned around at his name, hands clasped behind his back. He was dressed rather handsomely for the night in a tux with his hair neatly parted away from his face. But it was the starstruck smile on his face that made your skin warm up as he stopped in his tracks, just looking at you.
âKun? You good?â You coughed awkwardly, well aware of your spectators.
âSorry, sorry. Hello, Y/N.â He blinked and shook his head, stepping forward all the way to stand in front of you.
âYouâve already met my friend Sooyoung. Sheâs watching Woobin tonight for me.â You gestured to the two of them.
âSo you two can take as long as you need!â She piped up oh-so-helpfully.
You turned to look at her with wide, pointed eyes.
 âYou know, chatting people up for your fundraising, or whatever,â she tacked on innocently.
âThank you, SooSoo. Iâll see you later.â You pecked your son on the forehead. âGoodnight, Binnie. Remember, Mommy will be back late so Aunt SooSoo is going to put you to bed, and you and me are going to eat breakfast together, okay?â
âBut Aunt SooSoo said I was having a sleepover with her?â
âAunt SooSoo was just joking, baby. Iâm sorry, no sleepovers tonight,â you informed him with a heavy heart. Sooyoung set him down, and he toddled off towards the living room. Your friend went to follow him, and you grabbed her elbow to lean in to hiss in her ear, âI hope youâre happy, you owe Binnie a sleepover now.â
âAnd heâll get one,â she whispered back. âAs soon as you have one of your own.â
You shot her one final glare that she just retaliated with a wink, before letting her go and striding back over to Kun, who was waiting patiently by the front door.
âEverything okay?â He asked, concern on his features.
âYeah, just making sure she knows Binnie's bedtime and to not give him any more juice.â You offered him a reassuring smile. âAll good.â
âGood. You ready, then?â
âAs Iâll ever be, I guess.â
You so were not ready, it turned out. Just a few minutes after arriving, milling around and taking in the grandeur of the ballroom with Kun, you were starting to feel dizzy. Kun had already seen a couple of people that he must have known, flashing them a charismatic smile and exchanging passing greetings. You, meanwhile, felt like a weight was pressing on your chest, and inhaled deeply through your nose to try to calm down.
âWoah, are you okay, Y/N?â Kun leaned in to ask you quietly.
âYeah, fine,â you lied through your teeth. âWhy?â
âYouâve got a death grip on my arm that you didnât have thirty seconds ago.â He patted your hand that was on his upper arm.
Looking down, you saw that his suit jacket was crumpled in your fingers, and you consciously tried to loosen your grip, but couldnât make yourself do it. Instead, you just stared at your locked hand.
âIâm a copy editor, Kun, I donât really go to galas on the daily, so pardon me for being a little out of my element here,â you retorted, the words cutting through the air much harsher than you had intended. Taking another deep inhale and exhale, you added a whispered, âSorry, sorry.â
âCome on, letâs get some air, hm?â
The gala had an outdoor area devoid of other guests, presumably due to the chilly nighttime air. Kun sat you down on a stone bench outside of the main courtyard area, out of sight from the large windows of the ballroom.
The pressure on your chest was gone, and with you breathing easier, the cynical, nervous thoughts could finally take center stage in your brain.
âGod, this isnât going to work! Why did we even come out here?â You cracked your knuckles anxiously. âHow do we even ask for money without just sounding like children? âItâs not fair!ââ
âIf we find the right donorâand donât use that tone of voiceâthat argument is actually going to be what resonates with them,â Kun responded calmly, standing in front of you with his hands in the pockets of his slacks. âSomeone that cares about the kids, not about investing in an institution or whatever, will be moved by the fact that the preschool is being neglected financially.â
You chewed on the bottom of your lip. âWell damn, when you put it like that, I may just believe that youâre a Director of Sales, Qian Kun.â
âI thought the business card had convinced you.â
âAnybody can order a business card that says whatever they want.â
âThat wouldâve been extensive planning on my part.â
âHey, you couldâve had it on hand to pick up women. Thereâs guys that do that.â
He seemed genuinely put-off and bewildered. âWait really? Thatâs⊠That is just⊠loser behavior.â
âThough the fax number did point to it being real,â you continued, finally cracking a smile. âDudes doing pick-up probably think it makes them look dorky.â
âWhat? People arenât sexting via fax these days?â Kun joked, a grin tugging at his lips.
You were laughing too hardâand thus trying to quiet down your laughterâto respond to him, giving him the perfect leeway to continue. âWhat would you even call that? Saxing? Sexing?â
You were dizzy again, but this time it was light-headedness from laughing too hard, quite literally slapping your knee as you tried to calm yourself down.
Kun was chuckling as well, sliding in to sit next to you. âI take offense at the sentiment that fax machines are lame, by the way. Iâll have you know thatâs my personal fax line on my business card. Not everyone gets their own.â
Finally having enough wits about you to form sentences again, you sat up straight to look him in the eye as you clarified, âHey, I was saying that loser dudes who make fake business cards think that fax machines are lame. I think men with fax machines are sexy, especially personal fax lines.â
You went to nudge his shoulder teasingly, caught off-guard as you realized just how close he was to you. Even closer than the night on your couch, his dark eyes settling on your face, unabashedly drinking you in. Your breath hitched in your throat as you were suddenly surrounded by the intoxicating smell of his cologne. The cold air made the hair on your bare arms stand upâor maybe it was something elseâand you found yourself pressing forward even closer towards Kunâs warmth.
âY/N,â he murmured your name quietly. âAre you cold? We can go back inside.â
âNo, justâŠâ you took a deep breath, scooting in even closer to him, until you were pressed up side-to-side. âStay right here? Youâre warm.â
He uncertainly wrapped his arm around you. âSure, sure. Of course.â
âAnd⊠Can I ask you something?â
âAnything, yeah.â
âI wasnât crazy, right? On the couch the other night⊠Did you want to kiss me, too?â
âYou-You wanted to kiss me?â
âIâm uh, a bit rusty at this kind of thing,â you admitted, your skin burning. âBut Iâm not completely imagining that thereâs⊠something here, right, Kun?â
âYou wanted to kiss me?â He repeated like a broken record.
You lightly snapped your fingers in front of his face. âKun? My question? Or have I officially lost it, and this is like⊠going to make everything awkward for the fundraising committee?â
âNo, no, I-I doâdid want to kiss you. I thought I was making you uncomfortable,â he stumbled over his words sheepishly. âIâm uhm⊠also pretty rusty with this stuff.â
âYou do want to kiss me? Or you did want to kiss me, past tense?â You clarified.
âBoth! Uhm, I did, that night on the couch, and I still do, nowâŠâ He confessed weakly.
âIs there any reason that you shouldnât? Like, is there somebodyâŠ?â
âNo, there isnât. Not at all.â Kun gulped. âWhat about you?â
âNope, nobody, and Qian Kun, if you continue to talk about kissing me without actually doing anything, I might actually lose my mind,â you whispered, feeling hot, embarrassed, desperate tears pricking at the edges of your eyes.
âGod, sorry.â He cupped your cheek, turning your head and tilting your chin to be able to perfectly slot his lips with yours. The arm that was already wrapped around you just pulled you closer to him, as one of your hands grabbed the lapel of his suit jacket. You let out an embarrassing whimper as soon as his mouth meshed with yours, and he murmured another hushed âsorryâ against your lips. If he hadnât just told you that he was rusty, you wouldnât have had any idea as your head spun, your heart beat out of your chest wildly like a cartoon, and you were definitely crying tears of relief into what you were seriously considering quite possibly your best kiss ever.
It was your turn to mutter an apology as your tears turned the kiss salty, but as you pulled back to do just that, you saw the glistening of Kunâs eyes in the champagne tinted light filtering out from the ballroom, turning his tears golden as they slipped down his cheeks. Instead, you just pressed your forehead to his in silent understanding, looping your arm around his neck to hold him even closer, if that was possible.
PART II: you got my heartbeat to play to your time
Spotting Kun in the lobby of the preschool, you immediately lit up and rushed to sit down beside him on one of the benches. He offered you a tired smile and peck on the cheek in greeting, scooting to make room for you.
âBrr, itâs fucking freezing out there,â you shuddered, grabbing his hand to press it against the cold tip of your nose. âThatâs just from the 30-second walk from the parking lot to here! Are you two going to survive the walk home? You sure you donât want me to drive you? Well, I donât have another carseat for Junyi, but he could sit on your lap in the backseat, I think? Better than freezing to death, right?â
âWeâll be okay, Y/N,â Kun reassured you, patting your leg before resting his hand there. âThank you though, love.â
The subject of the cold suddenly made you remember something else, and you perked up, âOh, Woobin and I were at the store yesterday and he needed new gloves, and I saw that bunâs were getting a little worn out when we went out last weekend tooââ
âWhose?â Kun asked, furrowing his brows.
âJunyiâs. Look.â You held up the pair that matched Woobinâs, save for the pattern, which had little bunnies on them instead of whales. âArenât they adorable? God, I just love their tiny hands. Iâll return them if this is weird and I overstepped a line though. I tried to call you to see if this was okay, but the store was just a dead zone, and I couldnât get a signal.â
A sheepish smile punctuated the end of your nervous rambling. You and Kun hadnât been dating for very long, just a few months, and you were still getting a feel for boundaries when it came to your relationship with each other and each otherâs kids. Youâd just started spending the night at each otherâs houses with both kids thereâalready a big step, in your opinion. Taking the initiative on buying Junyi a new pair of gloves had seemed perfectly natural when the thought came to you, but you didnât want it to feel like you were rushing things to Kun, or taking a place that wasnât yours to takeâand hadnât been offered to youâin Junyiâs life.
âOh, no, Y/N, these are perfect, thank you.â He accepted them, a genuine, grateful smile on his face as he tucked them away in his jacket pocket, then squeezed both of your hands. âJunyi will love them. He did need new gloves; I just hadnât made it out to the store yet.â
âThen what is making you make that face?â
âSince when has Junyi been a bunny?â
âWere you not intentionally buying him a bunch of bunny-patterned stuff?â You questioned, tilting your head.
âHuh?â
âHis backpack, his stuffie that he brings to school, his pajamas that he wore at my place last weekend, and Iâve seen him in like at least three different bunny t-shirts. I thought the theming was intentional.â
Kun took a long, slow blink. âOh⊠it was not.â
âKun⊠are bunnies your favorite animal?â You teased.
âNo! I thinkâŠ?â
âGod, long day at work?â You surmised, stroking the back of his head soothingly.
He leaned into your touch, letting out a disgruntled groan, âLong week. Scratch that, long month.â
âMm, anything I can do to help?â
âUnless you can clone me, or stop timeâŠâ
âOkay, new question: Anything I can do to make you more comfortable? Even just something small?â
âCan you and Woobin come over tonight? I know we werenât planning on it, butââ
âYes, Kun, we can come over tonight,â you agreed, using your free hand to grab one of his.
âThank you,â he sighed, squeezing your hand back.
The door to the boysâ classroom opened then, and you nudged Kunâs shoulder with yours. He nodded, the two of you standing up together. As soon as you stepped foot into the classroom, your shins were knocked into by one small body, then another.
âOh, hey bun! Hey bubbles!â You greeted the kids, wobbling a bit as they had each latched onto one of your legs.
Kun, who had caught you by the elbow to steady you, was looking at the three of you with that same tired but heartfelt smile, âGuys, am I just chopped liver?â
Junyi squinted up at his dad curiously, âWhatâs liver?â
âYeah, whatâs liver, Mr. Kun?â Woobin echoed.
âHe means he wants a hug too, boys,â you explained. âAnd heâs been working really hard, so I think he should get a really big one.â
They immediately detached themselves from you to throw their little arms around Kunâs legs instead.
âYou should ask for one next time, Mr. Kun!â
âYeah, Daddy! Instead of talkinâ about liver and stuff.â
âYeah, Mr. Kun, just ask for one next time,â you repeated teasingly.
Kun looked at the two kids with that same fond, resigned smile. âRight, my bad, boys. I will just ask for one when I need one next time.â
As the kids hug-attacked Kun, you went over to their forgotten cubbies to pick up their respective whale and bunny backpacks, giving Ms. Xu and Mrs. Chen friendly waves of acknowledgement. When you returned, Kun had managed to get a kid under each arm, both toddlers giggling as they were held like sacks of potatoes.
âAre you carrying them out like that?â You asked with a tilted head.
âMaybe,â Kun joked. âItâs a good arm workout.â
âYeah, for all three of you,â you referred to how the boys were clinging onto his forearms against gravity as well.
âMm, the idea of buff three-year-olds terrifies me,â he declared, lowering the kids. âAlright, time to let go, guys.â
You reached into Junyiâs backpack to secure the little tiny puffer jacket that was inside, âItâs a bit chilly out, bun-bun, and you and your dad are walking home, so come on, youâre putting your coat on.â
âOkay,â he stuck his arms out for you to help put it on him.
âOh,â Kun pulled the new pair of gloves out of his own pocket, showing them off to his son. âLook, buddy. Ms. Y/N got you a new pair of gloves.â
âOh wow, thank you!â He beamed up at you.
âYouâre welcome,â you grinned back, kneeling down in front of him to zip up the jacket for him. âWoobin has a pair just like it but with whales, so you two can match next time he wears his.â
Woobin looked down at his bare hands with a thoughtful frown. âWhere are my gloves, Mommy?â
âTheyâre probably in your backpack, baby. You and I are driving home so you donât have to put them on if you donât want to, because your hands wonât be getting cold outside like Junyiâs.â
âOh. I want to put them on, please.â
âHere, Iâll get them,â Kun unzipped the backpack that was on your shoulder and began rooting through it.
âThank you.â You murmured. As he got the gloves and helped Woobin put them on, you went over the plans for the rest of the night with your son, âWeâre going to go home and get a few things, and then weâre going to Mr. Kun and Junyiâs house for a sleepover, okay?â
âOkay!â
Kun had finished tugging on the gloves then, âThere you go, Bin.â
âThank you, Mr. Kun!â Woobin chirped, then reached out for the other toddler. âJunyi, we match!â
âWe match!â Junyi giggled back, grabbing Woobin's whale-patterned hand with his own bunny-patterned one.
You stood up, covering your mouth in delight as you whispered to Kun, âIâm literally going to cry.â
âWay ahead of you,â he whispered back, and when you looked over, you did in fact see a single tear rolling down one of his cheeks.
âOh, oh my God, Kun.â You wiped it away with your thumb. âWhatâsââ
âTalk later?â
âOkay, yeah,â you nodded, looking around at the fact that you were still very much in the boysâ classroom, and had other things to do. âRight, of course. Talk later.â
Kun reached up to grab your hand that had wiped the tear away, squeezing it and offering you a smile. He dried his eyes with the sleeve of his other hand, then called for the kids, âCome on, boys. Weâve got to go. Youâll see each other in just a bit.â
Getting Woobin packed up to spend the night at Kun and Junyiâs was easy, and so was getting the two of them fed once you were there. The difficult part was getting even a single second of semi-private time with Kun to actually talk. The two boys wanted to include both of you in every single thing they did tonight, which was typically endearing, but the exhaustion that plagued Kunâs features the while time still concerned you. It wasnât until they were finally asleep in Junyiâs room, and you and Kun had cleaned up from dinner, that you finally had an opportunity.
He pulled you over to the couch, and you sat down, expecting one of your normal grown-up, mature, face-to-face talks to happen now. Youâd had a few already, about your expectations when you started dating, about the first time you spent the night at the otherâs house like this, whenever there was any need to clear the air. Both you and Kun agreed that you were both at the point in your life where you couldnât deal with the kind of tip-toeing uncertainty of young relationships, you needed something serious, with open, honest communication, especially around the kids.
But instead, Kun practically collapsed on top of you, wrapping his arms around your waist and burying his face in your middle. You cradled his head close to you, running a hand through his hair and stroking a thumb over his cheekbone.
âWhatâs wrong, Kun?â You murmured. âYou seem⊠drained.â
âI am,â he admitted plainly, defeat in his tone. âJust absolutely⊠fucking dead.ïżœïżœ
âIâm sorry to hear that, love,â you replied quietly.
âBut you were such a big help today, thank you.â
âI donât know how bringing another toddler into your home helped with that, but okay,â you said skeptically, still playing with his hair.
âHaving a second set of hands to help with dinnertime, and play time, and bathtime, and bedtimeâŠâ His chest heaved with another big sigh. âAnd just having you around⊠makes everything easier.â
He reached up to grab one of your hands, lacing his fingers with yours. The grip he had made you think he wasnât planning on letting go anytime soon. âI donât want you to leave, Y/N.â
âKun, Iâll stay for as long as you need me to,â you promised. âA couple nights, a week, whatever you need. Life is hard, especially trying to do everything on your own. Tomorrowâs Saturday, so how about you take the boys out and Iâll tidy up around here, okay?â
âForever?â
âWhat?â
âWill you stay forever?â
You stared down at your interlocked hands, the one in his hair stilling. âAre you askingâŠâ
âYou said youâd stay however long I need you to. I always need you with me, Y/N. Will you two move in with us?â Kun asked, placing a couple of long kisses to your hand. âOr we can get a new place. I just⊠canât imagine having to do this without you. Both of you. All four of us.â
You hummed, your hand resuming its ministrations in his locks. âWeâll probably need a new place⊠but yes, Kun. Weâll move in with you.â
He quickly kissed his way up your arm to your neck and face, until he was hovering above you, a breathless smile on his features. âReally?â
âIâll need to talk to BinnieâŠâ You warned. âAnd like I just said, weâll probably need to look for a new place, since the boys are used to having their own rooms and we can afford it combined. It wonât be instantaneous, but yes⊠we can start planning it.â
Then Kun was showering your face in kisses, and you giggled, cupping his face fondly.
âI love you, I love you, I love you.â
âI love you too, Kun,â you pulled him into a soft peck, before his raining kisses started going even lower, below your jaw, your neck, your collarbones. When his hand slipped under your shirt, you looked at him suspiciously. âHey⊠I thought you were absolutely fucking dead?â
âMysterious second wind,â his words were muffled against your skin, but you could feel the sly smirk on his lips.
âAlright, well do you think this second wind can at least be moved into your bedroom?â
âY/N, five weeks?!â Kun exclaimed, making you immediately slap a hand over his mouth and look over your shoulder at the two freshly-washed four-year-old boys sitting down to enjoy their post-bathtime show.
âKeep your voice down!â You chastised him in a harsh whisper. The living room was open to the kitchen in your new place, where you and Kun were huddled having your fervent back and forth at the moment. Youâd just so very casually dropped the fact that your period had been five weeks late, at perhaps not the most opportune time, washing the dishes, but really you hadnât meant for it to be a huge deal.
After you took your hand off his mouth, he replied back much more quietly, âSorry, Iâm not upset with you, love, Iâm surprised. Why havenât you taken a test?â
âWith work and both the boysâ birthdays, then them starting VPK, I just havenât had time to go get one.â
âLetâs go get one now then.â
âWhat, a family trip to the corner store to buy a pregnancy test?â You snorted at the idea, holding a dry plate out to Kun to put away.
He didnât take the plate, staring at you as he repeated, âFamily?â
âYou know what I meantâŠâ You whined, putting the dish down on the counter and covering your face in embarrassment. That was the first time either of you had referred to the four of you as one family unit.
He wrapped his arms around you, letting you bury your face in his chest. âI donât think you even know what you meant, lovey.â
âUgh, youâre right.â Your brain was way too scrambled at the moment, preoccupied with trying extremely hard to not think about what being late could possibly mean, what a test could possibly say.
âIâm serious, come on. Weâll buy the boys some ice cream, theyâll be none the wiser.â
âFine, I need to put some real pants on,â you pushed off his chest, gesturing to the dingy sleep shorts were you in. âCan youââ
âGet the boysâ shoes on. On it.â He nodded firmly.
âThank you, my love.â
âKun, I canât pee with you grinning at me like that. Itâs weird.â
With Woobin and Junyi preoccupied with their character popsicles and a movie in the living room, you and Kun were in the small hallway bathroom closest to the living room. It also happened to be the boysâ shared bathroom, the walls covered in vinyl, removable stickers of cartoon characters smiling down at you as unnervingly as Kun was currently. It was far too many eyes for what you were doing, peeing on a drugstore pregnancy test.
âSorry, sorry,â your boyfriend apologized, diverting his eyes and covering his mouth, though he was clearly still beaming into his hand.
Finally done with that part of the test, you set it atop the box that was sitting on the bathroom counter, washing your hands and dropping back down onto the toilet seat.
âAnd now we wait,â you declared with a heavy chest.
âOkay.â Kun nodded resolutely, allowing his eyes to return to you now that youâd spoken again, still absolutely glittering in the harsh fluorescents.
âNow would be a good time to talk, about if thatâs a plus. Youâre still grinning like a maniac, so I have a guess as to what youâre about to say.â
He sighed almost dreamily as he looked up at you, resting his cheek in his hand. âYouâre just⊠the most beautiful woman in the world to me, right now. And I love you, so much.â
âThis, me sitting on the toilet in our tiny hallway bathroom, having just peed on a stick in front of you,â you pointed between the two of you, âis one of the least romantic situations I think weâve ever been in. But, I love you too, you weirdo.â
âThat wasnât my answer, by the way. You go first, youâd be the one carrying any baby of ours, after all.â
âAfter Woobin, I told myself that if I had another, Iâd do itâŠâ You trailed off as you fumbled around for the right word.
âRight?â Kun supplemented hesitantly.
âNo, no, I donât think Woobin was wrong. Thatâs one thesaurus entry away from âmistake,â as cheesy as that might sound. But, I told myself that Iâd do my next one different. Iâd be married to someone, weâd have planned the pregnancy over multiple conversations, talked about kids before we even got married in the first place, Iâd have talked to Binnie about it, made sure he had the emotional space for a little sibling, too.â
âAnd we havenât even talked about getting marriedâŠâ He breathed out in realization.
You narrowed your eyes. âQian Kun, do you think for even a second, that I would be with you if I didnât think that I could marry you one day? After everything youâve learned about me? After that whole toilet bowl confessional I just gave literally ten seconds ago? Consider this the marriage talk warning. Itâs coming, and when it does, I expect you to bring notes.â
âGood point, Iâm sorry for doubting you, lovey. I eagerly await the marriage talks, and Iâll make sure to do my research ahead of time.â
âGood.â
âSo thatâs how you want to do it. What about if that test is positive? Right now?â He returned you to the present, his voice gentle, as you were reminded of the very real, very possible, tangible now that you were being faced with.
You let your head drop forward into your hands as you tried to pick apart the tangled ball that was your thoughts and feelings. Thinking back to when you were doing this by yourself the first time in your workplace bathroom, when you found out you were pregnant with Binnie⊠you distantly remembered how you felt when you saw that double line, that positive result. There was definitely anxiety, yes, but more than that you remembered an excitement bubbling up and overflowing on top of that the longer that it registered.
This time, you werenât feeling any of that. Not because you didnât love the idea of having a child with Kun, but⊠it just wouldnât be the right time. The two of you had only recently moved in together, you were still getting used to enmeshing your twoâor, fourâseparate lives into one, you hadnât even been together for a year, Woobin and Junyi hadnât been consulted whatsoever, not to mention they had just started VPK and would be going into primary school next year; Kun had just gotten a promotion at work, yes, but you had your eye on your own possible promotion, too. It just⊠wasnât right. Swallowing the lump in your throat, you finally looked up at Kun sitting across from you in the narrow space of the hallway bathroom. You could feel the tears gathering in your eyes, his image immediately swimming in your vision.
âOh, hey, come here, lovey,â he gently ushered you down from your perch on the toilet seat cover onto the ground with him. He settled you in between his legs, wrapping his arms around you, âSad cry or scary cry?â
You had the urge to smack his arm for treating you like one of the kids, but unfortunately, it was a really good communication tool.
âGoddamn,â you wept against his shirt, clinging onto him. âI donât know, Kun. I donât fucking know. Itâs not a happy cry, though. And I donât think that any kid should be brought into the world if their mom isnât happy at the thought of them.â
He rubbed a hand up and down your back, not faltering for a moment as you spoke. When you were done, he started, âLook, Y/N. Iâll admit, the idea of having a baby with you kind of sent me to the stratosphere there for a second. But, I think that a baby is something that needs to be two enthusiastic yeses, or itâs a no. And youâŠâ he pulled your face out of the crook of his neck to be able to look you in the eye. âAre clearly not enthusiastic nor a yes. So Iâm not either. Okay?â
You sniffled, âOkay.â
âOkay,â he repeated, wiping at your tears. âNow, I think itâs been plenty of time. Are you ready to look at the test?â
âYeah, yeah.â
Kun stretched his arm out, fumbling along the top of the bathroom counter until he had secured the test in his hand. You turned in his arms, fully leaned against him, your back to his chest as he flipped the stick over for you two to read the results together.
Negative.
And you were crying again, but this time you knew that they were tears of relief.
âOh, thank God,â you whispered, holding a hand over your mouth. âOh⊠oh my God.â
âThere we go,â Kun murmured, holding you to him by an arm slung over your waist. âNow, call me crazy, but I think we just manifested that negative pregnancy test result.â
You let out a choked laugh, âWould it be manifesting a negative or un-manifesting a positive?â
âGood question.â
He held a foot out until he could reach the step opener of the trash can, tossing the test into it. You sat there with him for who knows how much longer, until the cold of the tile finally seeped through your clothes, and your joints were aching from being curled up on your bathroom floor for so long.
âOh shit, the boys are all by themselves in the living room,â you mumbled, beginning to detangle yourself from Kun.
âIâll clean up in here. You get into some pajamas and then go see them, okay? Theyâve been the normal amount of quiet, I think the movieâs got them sufficiently occupied, so take your time. Iâll be right behind you.â He reassured you, standing up after you did, and keeping a hand on the small of your back as you went to wash your hands again.
The remnants of the pregnancy test packaging were on the counter, not to mention the general disarray from your breakdown, and the fact that you hadnât tidied up from the boysâ bathtime earlier that night either. When you looked at yourself in the mirror, you could see that you werenât in much better shape than the bathroom.
âOkay, yeah. Thank you, Kun.â Your voice wasnât any louder than a whisper, and it didnât need to be in the small, quiet space.
He pressed a long kiss to your temple before you left for your bedroom to change out of the clothes that youâd gone to the convenience store in. Putting on the comfiest pajamas you could find, you then shuffled out to the living room, which you were glad to see was in one piece. Tension you didnât even realize you were carrying released from your shoulders when your eyes fell on the two kids sat on the couch, their attention glued to the screen.
You werenât sure how long you had been standing there before Woobin finally turned his head to look at you. âOh hi Mommy!â
âHi, Ms. Y/N!â
âHi, boys, can I join you?â You asked.
âWell, yeah!â Junyi said in the most âduh!â tone youâd ever heard a four-year-old imitate. He patted the open space between the two of them. âWe saved you a spot here.â
âOh, thank you.â You sat down exactly where he had gestured, tucking your feet underneath you. Woobin immediately clambered onto your lap, and Junyi scooted in to snuggle into your other side.
âAnd when Daddy gets here, his spot is over here,â Junyi pointed to the remaining space between him and the arm of the couch. âAnd he can put the blanket on all of us.â
âRight, of course, bun,â you nodded, wrapping your arms around the two boys to hold them even closer to you.
Woobin touched a hand to your cheek, âMommy, youâre crying. Sad cry, scary cry, or boo-boo cry?â
âOh, no, baby, it's a happy cry,â you assured him, wiping at the couple of tears that had eked out again with your sleeve. âItâs because I love you all so much.â
âHappy cry,â he repeated, as if committing the term to memory.
Kun joined the three of you a few minutes later, sliding into his assigned seat and pulling a blanket over the four of you. Mindful of the child in between you two, you rested your head on his shoulder.
Against your instincts, you shut the front door quietly behind you as you came home that night. Youâd gotten caught up at work with a deadline suddenly being moved up. You plopped your purse onto the kitchen table next to the huge LEGO set that youâd started with the boys last weekend as Kun got up from the couch to greet you. He was already in his pajamas, a stark contrast to the office wear you were still in.
âHey, lovey,â he pecked your cheek, letting you snake both your arms around his waist and hold him closer. âHow was work?â
You let out a low, exhausted groan into his shoulder. âLong. If I ever have to read another word again in my life, itâll be too soon.â
âThen youâll be very happy to hear that I already read the boys a bedtime story.â
âShit, am I that late?â You sighed. âI know I told you Iâd probably miss dinner but I didnât mean for you to do bedtime all by yourself, too.â
âItâs okay, I know you wouldâve been here if you could. The three of us managed for one night.â
âHow was everything? Were they good for you?â
âAbsolute angels.â
You lifted your head up to shoot him a disbelieving look. âOur sons? Are you sure youâve got the right kids in there?â
Kun chuckled, planting a kiss on your lips this time. âYou know us too well. Only convinced them to get in bed with bribery.â
âGreat, what did you promise them? Extra hour of TV this weekend? Kun, please do not tell me you promised a new toy orââ
âWoah, woah, who do you think I am?â He snorted, clearly offended. âI just had to promise that youâd give them their goodnight kiss when you got home. They were very concerned about going to sleep without one.â
Relief immediately flooded your system, along with a warm fondness. âOh, good. Iâll go hold up our end, then.â
âBefore you do,â Kun held you by the waist to keep you from walking away yet. He lowered his voice, tone turning serious. âWoobin was asking for you before lights-out. Not just for his goodnight kiss, but he wouldnât tell me what was going on. I have a feeling he might still be up when you go in.â
You nodded thoughtfully. âOkay, Iâll pop into his room second. Thanks for the heads-up.â
With a final pat on the cheek, you left Kunâs warm embrace and treaded down the hall that contained the boysâ bedrooms and shared bathroom. You slowly opened the door to Junyiâs room first. The room was pitch black save for the dwindling light from his glow-in-the-dark ceiling stars, and you crept up to his bedside. Just able to see the faint outline of him under his covers, you gently brushed away some of his hair and laid a soft kiss on his forehead.
âNight, bun-bun,â you murmured, then kissed his pudgy little cheek one more time before standing up. He didnât stir, his breathing remained peaceful and as you ducked back out you closed the door even more quietly than you had opened it.
As soon as you pushed the door to Woobinâs room open, you knew he was awake. He was in a phase of sleeping with a night-light on, meaning that you could immediately see his eyes staring at you.
âHi, Mommy,â he deadpanned, hands folded together over his stomach.
You entered the room, shutting the door behind you. âHi, baby. What are you still doing up?â
He squirmed a little under the covers, refusing to meet your eyes as you came to sit on his mattress next to him. âWaiting for my goodnight kiss.â
âOh, you couldâve gone to sleep,â you reassured him, moving his bangs out of the way of his forehead. âMommy wouldâve still come and given you your goodnight kiss.â
He was silent as you leaned down to smooch his forehead. Pulling back, you asked, âIs that all, Binnie?â
Woobin mumbled something that you couldnât quite make out.
âIâm sorry, could you say that again for me? I couldnât hear you.â
âI want to say something, but itâs after my bedtimeâŠâ
âDonât worry, baby. I want to hear what you have to say. You can say it now.â
âI donât want Junyi to be mad at me.â
âWhy do you think Junyi would be mad at you?â
âYou canât tell them!â He suddenly exclaimed, pleading and desperate.
âTell who? Junyi and Mr. Kun?â You asked, brow furrowing with confusion.
He nodded fervently, panic on his features.
âYou remember our rules about sharing things?â
âIf itâs about safety or respect, we all have to know,â he recited mournfully. âItâs not! I promise! I thinkâŠâ
âHow about you tell me, and Iâll tell you if itâs something we should tell everyone. I wonât get mad, and you and me can talk about it for as long as you want first. Does that sound okay?â
âOkayâŠâ
âWhenever youâre ready,â you said soothingly, watching him take a few deep breaths to calm himself down.
âI-I want to call Mr. Kun âDaddy.ââ
You couldnât help but smile widely at him, taking your sonâs hand in yours. âThatâs wonderful, baby. I think it would make Mr. Kun really happy that you want to.â
âBut thatâs what Junyi calls himâŠâ
âAnd you think it would upset Junyi if you called him the same thing?â
âYeah,â he sniffled.
âThatâs very considerate, Binnie,â you told him proudly.
âAre you going to tell them?â
âNo, not if you donât want me to,â you shook your head. âBut I think that it would be a good idea for you, Junyi, and Mr. Kun to all talk about this together. When youâre ready.â
Woobin sniffled again, and you leaned over to hug your boy. He immediately threw his arms around your neck, burying his wet face in the collar of your blouse.
When you finally left his room after watching him fall asleep with your own two eyes, you found Kun reclined in your bed, bedside lamp on as he read a book.
âIs Woobin alright?â Kun flipped his book shut and set it aside.
You shimmied out of your work clothes. âYeah, heâs okay. Just⊠needed Mom before bed.â
He nodded, watching as you pulled sleep clothes on and shuffled over to the bathroom. âMm, of course. Mr. Kun wasnât enoughâŠâ He sighed dramatically, making you lean your head back out to glare at him, toothbrush hanging out of your mouth.
âShut up,â you grumbled after spitting your toothpaste out and flicking the bathroom light off. You plopped into bed, snuggling up to your pillow and closing your eyes. âHe loves you, you know that.â
The sound of the bedside lamp clicking off rang through your room before you felt the sheets shift around and Kun scoot closer to you.
âI know, Iâm just not âMom,ââ he mused, grabbing your hands to tug you toward him.
You obliged, rolling over to face him and rest your head on his shoulder. He kissed your forehead, still holding your hands against his chest.
âGoodnight, my love,â you breathed out, âThank you again for handling them alone tonight.â
âGoodnight, lovey.â He rubbed soothing circles into the palm of your hand with his thumb.
As you watched Kun alternate between pushing Woobin and Junyi on the swingset, you couldnât help but smile to yourself. It was peaceful afternoons like these that you treasured the most. You recognized a few more figures that were approaching the playground, waving to Johnny and Jaehyun in the distance as Mark and Sungchan immediately ran up to your two boys. The three dads all chatted as the four kids took off from the swingset at full speed towards the slides. You were on a bench a little further from the playset, and had no qualms about sitting and resting when you got the chance.
The playground was within walking distance of yours and Kunâs house, and right by the school, so it wasnât a total shock to see some of your kidsâ classmates there. You watched with amusement as all three of the adults perked up like meerkats towards the kids, who were now lined up at the monkey bars. Mark was first up, and must have been asking for help, as Johnny yelled out a âjust a sec, champ!â before gesturing between the three dads and all the kids clambering for their turn.
Apparently, Johnny and Jaehyun had decided it was their turn to help all four kids with the bars, as Kun lumbered over to plop down next to you at the picnic table.
âThank God they showed up, I donât know if I have it left in me to carry them back and forth across the monkey bars for the next hour,â Kun grunted, dropping his head down to rest on your shoulder.
You snickered, wrapping an arm around his shoulders as you watched all the children play. Woobin was the littlest, needing Jaehyunâs help all the way across the bars. The dad still gave him as enthusiastic of a double high-five as he gave Junyi after him, who was able to do a couple by himself after getting hoisted up there.
âWoobin wants to call you Dad, you know,â you blurted out in the quietness that had fallen between you and Kun.
Kun lifted his head up to look at you with wide eyes. âHe does?â
âYeah, he told me the other day. But he thinks Junyi will be mad at him.â
âOhhâŠâ He breathed out, nodding slowly.
âI wouldâve said something to you, but he asked me not to tell you and Junyi at first. We had another conversation about it this morning, and he finally agreed that I could talk to you about it at least,â you explained. âI told him that you three should all talk. I think heâs really, really scared of making Junyi upset. Theyâre such good friends, you know?â
You looked on with fondness as the gaggle of kids around the monkey bars took off at a run away from Johnny and Jaehyun, apparently playing some kind of tag or hide and seek now. Woobin and Junyi were running off together hand-in-hand, giggling and cackling with laughter as Johnny mimicked chasing after them.
Kun ran a knuckle up and down your arm, trailing his hand down until he could lace his fingers with yours. âI know, sometimes I look at them and I think itâs like theyâre⊠brothers.â
âMm, yeah,â you hummed noncommittally. Finally taking your eyes off the playground, you turned to face him fully, covering his hand with both of yours. âKun, with all this⊠it makes me really happy, you and Junyi make me really happy, and all four of us being together. But, I donâtâ Iâm not trying to replace Junyiâs mom. Despite what she did, heâs already had one, whatever memories heâs got of her. I want to be whatever he wants me to be. So, Iâm perfectly content to be âMs. Y/Nâ for the rest of my life.â
âI asked him the other day, if he remembered his mom at all,â he admitted quietly.
âW-Why?â
âMorbid curiosity, I guess. He was so young, I wasnât sure if he would. Funny thing was, he told me yes. So I asked what he remembered about her. And he just looked at me with the most confused expression I think Iâve ever seen him have and he goes âShe picked me up from school today.ââ
âOh, oh my God,â you let out a choked chuckle, a lump growing in your throat.
âYou picked him up from school that day, Y/N,â Kun said pointedly, poking you in the arm for emphasis.
âYeah, I had guessed that,â you spluttered out, a wide, beaming smile on your face as you replayed those words in your mind over and over again.
âSo it seems like, to me, youâre the only one with hang-ups about this, lovey.â
âIâm gonna fucking cryâ no, scratch that, I already am,â you sniffled, wiping at your eyes with one of your hands.
âSad cry, scary cry, boo-boo cry, or happy cry?â Kun asked teasingly, thumb wiping away one of your tears.
âHappy cry,â you answered, despite the fact that he definitely already knew. âSo happy. I love you so much, both of you.â
âJunyi!â The distant voice of Johnny called out, chastising.
Both you and Kun snapped your heads up to look, only to see said child running at you full-speed.
âWoobin! Let your parentsâŠâ Jaehyun trailed off in defeat as a second small body hurtled towards you. âSorry! We tried to let you guys have a momentâŠâ
âItâs alright!â Kun called back to them as the two boys finally made it to you.
You lifted Junyi up onto the bench next to you with no hesitation, and Kun plopped Woobin onto his lap, his little legs reaching into yours. Junyi sat himself down on one of your legs, facing you with the most worried, intense gaze on his face.
âAre you okay, Ms. Y/N?!â He wiped at your wet cheeks. âWhat happened?â
âNothing, hunny-bun,â you promised, holding both of his little hands and dropping loud smooches to them. âHappy tears, theyâre happy tears. Iâm sorry for worrying you.â
âBecause you love us so much?â Woobin asked, supplying the last reason youâd given him for your happy tears.
âYeah, always, bubbles,â you grabbed his head to be able to press a kiss to his forehead. âAlways love you guys so much.â
âWhy does it make you cry?â
âBecause I have so much love inside me for all of you that sometimes it feels like I could just⊠burst!â You said with enough of a sing-song-y inflection that it made the two kids giggle, especially when you mimicked an explosion with your hands. âSo instead of spontaneously exploding, it comes out as tears sometimes. Tears arenât bad, Binnie, remember?â
âI know, Mommy,â he nodded dutifully.
Kun spoke up then, âI think we should all talk about what was making your mom so happy this time, boys.â
Junyi looked at his dad with alarm. âWhat? Bin and I didnât do anything! Weâre not in trouble, right?â
âI didnât do anything!â Woobin pouted. âJunyiââ
âNo, youâre not in trouble,â Kun hushed them gently. âI just said it was making your mom happy. What about you two getting in trouble would make your mom happy?â
âOh.â
âI mean, itâs about what you two want to call us.â
You were still cradling Woobinâs head, and stroked over his hair reassuringly. âItâs okay, Binnie. Tell them what you told me.â
âI-I want to call Mr. Kun âDaddy,ââ he mumbled, looking down intently at his lap. âBut I donât have to if itâs going to make you sad, Junyi!â
Junyi listened to Woobin, face turning entirely confused. âBut he is your dad! Why wouldnât you call him that?â He turned his bewildered look to you next. âAnd youâre our mom, right?!â
âOf course I am, bun-bun,â you smiled at him. âBinnie just needs to know if itâs going to make you upset for both of you to call your dad the same thing.â
âNo, Bin, sânot gonna make me sad,â Junyi said strongly. âWill it make you sad if we call her the same thing?â
Woobin sniffled and looked up, finally displaying his teary eyes to everybody. He shook his head, and you felt relief blossom out through every part of you. Kun squeezed him tightly.
âBub, sad cry, scary cry, or happy cry?â Kun asked him.
The child took several deep breaths before he finally answered. âI-I think it was scary first, but now itâs a happy cry, Daddy. Like Mommy does.â
Kun let out a strangled chuckle as he hugged Woobin even tighter to him, planting a kiss to his temple. âThatâs okay, bub. Look at you, big kid with big feelings.â
âDaddyâs crying too!â Junyi gasped. âIs it happy crying, Daddy?â
âYeah, buddy, it is,â he confirmed, cheeks noticeably damp.
Junyi felt at his own dry eyes. âWhy am I not happy crying? Mommy, why am I not happy crying? âM happy! I am!â
âOh, bunny, itâs okay,â you couldnât help but laugh, rubbing his back affectionately. âYou donât have to cry to be really happy. Sometimes youâll be really, really happy, the happiest youâve ever been, and you wonât cry. Everybodyâs different.â
âI do.â
âI do!â Sooyoung squealed.
The officiantâs remaining words were drowned out by the crowd erupting into cheers as Sooyoung was dipped into a kiss by her now-wife. You clapped from your place behind her as her maid-of-honor, your cheeks already hurting from all the smiling youâd been doing that day.
As they practically ran back down the aisle together, giddy, you were left standing at the arch, holding SooSooâs wedding bouquet that sheâd forgotten in her excitement. The music swelled again, your cue for the wedding party to file out as well. You fell in beside Ahrinâs best man, taking a more reasonable pace down the walkway. Looking into the guests that had stood up, you caught Kunâs eye from one of the middle rows, a familiar wide, overjoyed grin on his face. He was in the stratosphere again.
You met up with Kun at your table at the reception, the wedding party table. While he wasnât in the party, he was your plus one, and your friend of course made sure he was seated with you. After the obligatory speechesâincluding one that you had to giveâeveryone could start eating. Kids were allowed at the wedding, but you wanted to make sure that you could put all your focus on making this the best day ever for your friend and didnât want to have the boys out too late either, so they were at home with a babysitter. After the food was the coupleâs first dance, and you watched fondly from your table as Sooyoung and Ahrin swayed together, clearly in their own world, exchanging words and giggles and laughs that you couldnât hear.
Kunâs hand and yours were entwined on your lap, and when the DJ asked for the wedding party and their plus-ones to join the newlyweds, you pulled him to floor by that hand. As Kunâs other hand settled on your hip, you affectionately smoothed down the lapel of his suit jacket before resting yours on the curve where his neck met his shoulder.
âHi, gorgeous,â he beamed at you.
âHi, handsome,â you replied back humorously. âSo, whatâs on your mind?â
âYou mean there could possibly be anything on my mind other than the fact that Iâm dancing with the love of my life?â
âYouâve got that look on your face.â
âWhat look?â
âThe âIâve been launched into the stratosphere picturing our future togetherâ look,â you said frankly, but still with the same fond smirk on your lips. âSo? What are you thinking about?â
His eyes widened minutely before he chuckled. âIâm having a good time with you, lovey. Is a guy not allowed to smile about that?â
âYou areâŠâ
âThatâs all I was thinking about.â He pulled you closer, pressing a kiss to your cheek. âAlways in the stratosphere when Iâm with you.â
Despite his sweet words, you felt a twinge of disappointment in your chest, resting your cheek on his shoulder so he couldnât see the contemplative frown on your face. The two of you were living together before Sooyoung and Ahrin had even met, you were raising two kids together right now, and had already discussed getting marriedâbinders, spreadsheets, all your joint expectations for what you wanted out of a hypothetical future partnership like that. Why was he shying away from the subject now? Was seeing you actually at a wedding making him have second thoughts? Did it suddenly all seem too real? As if the binders and spreadsheets werenât real enough?
Those werenât questions to ask him now at your best friendâs wedding, so you bit your tongue, continuing to let him sway the two of you across the dance floor.
Later in the night, after your feet had gotten tired, Kun excused himself to use the restroom. You took the opportunity to catch your breath at the wedding partyâs table. Youâd been darting around the venue the whole time, either greeting friends of friends, dancing with people you knew, or stopping mishaps before they mis-happened. Some guests had started going home, so you felt somewhat comfortable taking a short rest.
You werenât expecting one of the brides herself to sit down beside you, however.
âWhatâs wrong, Y/N?â Sooyoung asked knowingly.
You tried to perk up, slapping on a smile. âItâs nothing, SooSoo. My feet are tired. Why arenât you with Ahrin?â
âWeâre about to be together for the rest of our lives. I think she can piss by herself right now,â she replied.
âOh, right.â
âAnd, itâs also my wedding, and I donât want my best friend all sad and alone at my wedding. I know youâve been fixing all my problems all day and all night. So will you let me help you with one of yours?â
You looked around to see if you could spot Kun anywhere, then leaned in towards her with a sigh. âKunâs been acting weird today.â
âHow?â
âWe always talk about getting married pretty openly. But like, now that weâre at a wedding, it feels like heâs avoiding the topic.â
âWhy havenât you guys gotten married? You practically act like it anyway.â
âHe still wants to surprise me with the proposal,â you said. âI told him no public proposals, no proposing on birthdays or holidays, and no proposing at other peopleâs weddings. But other than thatâŠâ
âWhen was that conversation? About getting married and engaged?â
You took a sip of your drink as you thought. âMm⊠almost a year ago? Maybe ten months? It was a few conversations.â
âSo Ahrin proposed like right after that,â she surmised. âHeâs probably waiting for the right time. Making sure you werenât too stressed with the kids, then the holidays, and being my maid-of-honor. Both of you are very thoughtful and also over-plan everything.â
âThatâs true,â you sighed. âAnd also a bit less salient of a point coming from the poster child of U-Haul lesbians.â
Sooyoung wrapped an arm around your shoulders and rubbed your upper arm. âWeâre different people in different relationships in different places in life, Y/N. Youâve got a really good guy who is head over heels for you and loves your kid as much as he loves you. Donât forget all that in one night.â
âYouâre right, SooSoo,â you leaned your head against hers. âThank you.â
âAnytime.â She pecked your hair.
âIs everything okay?â Kunâs voice came from behind you, sounding very concerned.
âOh, yeah, Y/Nâs getting a little warm in here,â SooSoo informed him brightly, letting you go and standing back up. âWhy donât you take her outside, Kun? Thereâs a nice little garden walkway, I think thereâs some benches out there.â
âYeah, of course. Thanks, Sooyoung.â
Your friend gave you one last squeeze of your arm before taking back off into the crowd. Kun ushered you to your feet and guided you out of the main reception hall and into the much cooler nighttime air. Sooyoung was right, it was way less hot and stuffy out here, and there was a short walkway leading to a garden with some benches. Kun sat you down again there, rubbing your back as you stared listlessly out at the fountain in front of you. The fountain wasnât on, the water inside of it still, and the air around you quiet and empty. In the distance, you could hear the music from the wedding venue, the thumping bass, and above you, a few stars dotted the sky next to a silver crescent moon.
âIs this better?â Kun asked you quietly.
âYeah, thanks, Kun,â you replied shortly, still unable to shake the discomfort you felt from earlier. Despite your conversation with Sooyoung making sense in the moment, now that you were back with Kun, that uncertainty crept back into your mind.
âIt was a lovely ceremony.â
âYeah. SooSooâs dress is beautiful on her.â
âDo you want to go home? If youâre not feelingââ
You suddenly straightened up to look Kun in the eye. âWeâre going to get married, right? You do want to marry me, right, Kun?â
âWhââ He scrambled to grab your hands in his, holding them tight. âOf course, love. Yes, of course I want to marry you, Y/N. Why would you think I didnât?â
âI know we talk about it but⊠you havenât proposed. And youâve been acting weird tonight. And by weird, I mean normal. Like, not talking about marriage. Weâll be buying groceries, and youâll somehow bring up us getting married, but now weâre at an actual wedding and you havenât talked about us having one of our own at allâŠâ The dam broke, all of your anxious rambles coming forth at once. âNothing about if we should do this or that at ours, what flowers you might want, or evenâ You saw me at an altar holding a bouquet and are acting like itâs no big deal! You see our future in everything, but not today, and itâs been making me think that maybe you donât see a future anymore.â
Oh god, you were fucking crying now. This was not how you wanted this conversation to go. Tears spilled down your cheeks, and you pushed them away with the back of your hand as you sniffled and tried to calm yourself down.
âY/N, lovey, I am so sorry,â Kunâs voice was wavering too, and you knew he was holding back his own tears. âI do want to marry you, and I never wanted to make you think that I didnât. You were right earlier, Iâve been in the fucking stratosphere all day, and Iâve been going crazy trying not to say every single thing that pops into my head about marrying you because Iâve got your ring and everything planned out for the proposal and it was going to be soon, I just wanted it to be a surprise for you and I didnât want to accidentally spoil anything for you. But I never meant to hurt you, and I am so, so sorry that I did. God, I love you so much, it felt like my heart was going to give out when I saw you at the altar with a wedding bouquet, and then dancing after the first danceââ
You crushed your lips against his, letting go of one of his hands to wrap a hand around the back of his neck. He cupped your cheek softly, even as you kissed him like you hadnât seen him in decades, and like you might never again, feverishly, past the point where you were out of oxygen and your head started spinning. Kun pulled back to pick up your left hand, bringing it up to his lips and pressing a kiss on your ring finger.
âIf I had it with me, Iâd put your ring on you right now,â he promised, pressing another kiss to the empty knuckle. âHell, we could elope tonight, find a drive-thru chapel.â
âThe boys might feel left out,â you chuckled, pulling his mouth back to yours.
He hummed appreciatively against your lips, adding in between kisses, âGoodâ point. Pick them up on the way?â
âItâs past their bedtime.â You kissed him again. âTheyâd be cranky if we woke them up now.â
âFoiled again by two five-year-oldsâ bedtime,â he sighed dramatically, leaning his forehead against yours.
âSo how were you going to do it?â
âDo what?â
âPropose to me.â
âIâm still going to?â
âWell, I feel like I just ruined your surprise.â
âMe telling you what itâs going to be, would be ruining the surprise,â he scoffed and pulled back to let you see his indignant features. âWhich Iâm not going to do.â
You laughed, pecking his cheek. âIâm looking forward to it, my love.â
âAnd Iâm looking forward to marrying you, and spending the rest of my life with you,â Kun sighed dreamily, pulling you in closer and resting his head against yours again. âI meant it when I said Iâm always in the stratosphere with you, you know.â
âMe too, Kun.â You looped an arm around his back and under his suit jacket.
A few beats of peaceful silence went by, neither you nor Kun speaking, just the distant sounds of the music from the wedding, your own synchronized breathing, and a far-off train horn. You looked from the fountain up at the glowing half-moon above you.
âThank you, lovey,â Kun broke the quiet, and you shifted your gaze to him, raising a curious eyebrow.
âYouâre welcome?â You replied with slight amusement. âFor what, love?â
âSomebody once told me that the whole point of being a parent was letting our kids know that theyâre not alone in all this,â he began, rubbing his thumb over your shoulder where his hand rested.
âWho said that?â
âYou did, lovey.â
âI did? Ooh, Iâm smart,â you chuckled, patting his thigh. âYou picked well, Qian Kun.â
He smiled at you fondly. âI know.â
âWhen did I say that?â
âBefore we were even dating, you had invited Junyi and me to your apartment for a charcuterie night. When we were making that pitch for the preschool fundraising committee.â
âOh, oh, oh, right.â You nodded quickly as the memories of that came flooding back to you. âYou remember me saying that?â
âOf course. You completely changed my view on parenting that night.â
âGlad it was so life-changing for you.â
âIt was also the moment I knew I was going to fall in love with you.â
You couldnât help but laugh maybe a little too hard, âOh, Kun.â
âWhatâs that laugh for?â He chuckled lightly despite his obvious confusion.
âIâm just remembering how I was totally going to jump your bones that night and then Junyi walked in. Meanwhile you are just⊠so sweet, as always,â you admitted, stroking his cheek with the back of your fingers.
Kunâs eyes crinkled as he laughed and keeled forward a little. You let him laugh into your neck, cradling the back of his head as his shoulders continued to shake.
âIââ He coughed into his elbow as he righted himself and tried to compose himself again. His eyes were sparkling with tears from how hard heâd laughed as he looked at you now, and you affectionately touched the crinkles around his eye as a couple more giggles escaped him. Once heâd finally sobered up enough, he tried again, âYouâve also helped me realize thatâs not just what being a parent is about, though. Thatâs what being a partner is, too. Making sure your person knows theyâre not doing it alone. And I hope thatâs how I make you feel, too.â
âQian Kun, love of my life that you areââ you shook your head and grabbed his face with two hands. âOf course you do, and itâs taking everything in me not to squish your head right now because of how much I love you.â
Kun just laughed again, covering your hands with his and slotting your lips together.

making out with wayv
genre/warnings: fluff, suggestive (minors DNI), established relationship, boyfriend!wayv
kun is definitely the type to constantly smile throughout the kiss and you can feel it when he does that, which makes your heart flutter. makeouts with kun are usually quite brief, and very gentle and sweet. kun would also frequently make sure to take short breaks in between kisses in case you ran out of air because he's just considerate like that.
ten would constantly tease you and get you all riled up. wbk ten is a huge flirt. he would smirk the entire time, whisper dirty things to you, and use a lot of tongue in his kisses. plus, his hands would be roaming all over your body and feeling you up. makeout sessions with ten usually lead to more because he gets all hot and bothered just by kissing you.
winwin would be quite shy and even hesitant at first, but quickly gets into the mood. he prefers if you take the lead at first, and then he'll take over after a bit. winwin definitely goes a little crazy when you grab onto the hem of his shirt while he's sweetly kissing you. bro has had so many kissing scenes from his dramas i truly believe he is more experienced than he lets on.......
xiaojun's kisses would be very slow and passionate, because he wants you to feel loved. he's extra and puts on one of his r&b playlists because he likes the romantic atmosphere it creates. xiaojun holds both of your hands in his hands during the whole makeout session too :(( be sure to expect very intense eye contact from him.
hendery KNOWS what he's doing. he knows all the right buttons to push and is a playful tease too, he'll literally pull away and chuckle just as you're about to deepen the kiss. tbh i can see hendery being a biter. now you didn't hear this from me, but i feel like hendery is definitely the type to do the knee thing (iykyk) while he's marking your neck up with pretty purple bruises.
yangyang would get wayyy too excited at the idea of making out with you and practically jumps on top of you, almost bumping his forehead into yours. he would smash his lips against yours and giggle in between kisses because he just can't contain his excitement!!! pro tip: play with yangyang's hair when he's kissing you, it makes him absolutely melt into a puddle.

wayv and pda
pairing: wayv x gn!reader
cw: none
author's note: guess who's back from the dead! long story short i've been booked and busy, and since i started this blog purely to post if and when i have an idea and/or inspiration, i didn't want to push myself to put out just anything. i'll continue to write as motivation comes though, so please stick around đ«¶
#kun
not really huge on pda. he prefers to keep intimacy for, well, intimate spaces, but still enjoys showing his affection for you to the level that says "this is my partner and i love them" without making any of the parties involved uncomfortable. that said, he prefers to do it with actions over touching, like opening the doors for you, walking on the side of the sidewalk that's closer to the street, or helping you out of your outerwear, but linking your arms or wrapping his hand around your waist is also very welcome. he's extremely observant too, so he'll move your necklace if the clasp has shifted to the front, fix your hair or head accessories, or take care of an eyelash that fell on your cheek. bonus: not exactly pda unless someone else is in the car, but he will put a hand over your thigh when he's driving.
#ten
honestly couldn't care less. not that he doesn't show pda, he does, a lot, but he never does it on purpose. he'd just casually put a hand around your shoulders when you're walking, on your thigh when you're sitting down, or place his chin on your shoulder when you're waiting in line out of habit. he'd touch your arm or shoulder when he's talking and lightly slap your arm while laughing because it feels natural to him. he's mindlessly reaching for your hand and intertwining your fingers when he's absorbed into telling a story, and give it a little squeeze when he's done and realizes it. most of those he would also do to his members or other close friends, but none of them would give him that familiar feeling in the stomach when reciprocating his affection like you do.
#winwin
not a fan, at all. not in front of strangers, not family, not the members. you'd have to take things slowly and look out for his reactions to get an idea of what he's okay with, or simply just sit him down and get it out of him. he will get shy and embarrassed, and that's the main reason for why he's not big on pda, but unless you plainly don't respect his boundaries he won't be uncomfortable to the point of getting annoyed either. he can handle a few teasing comments from his members and probably will gradually accommodate, but he still prefers when there's only one pair of eyes watching him. when it comes to holding hands, please link your pinky with his, for the sake of his heart (he also thinks it's cute).
#xiaojun
gets shy about pda but does it nevertheless. what can he say? he's whipped for you and he couldn't go an hour without a peck on your head, at the very least, and if someone happens to be in the same room at the time, then that's what the universe must have wanted. he's really just slightly less clingy in public than he is in private, and maybe will limit the amount of kisses according to who's there with you, but won't really complain about anything you initiate. will he blush all the way to the tips of his ears if anyone comments on his display of affection? yes. is he going to do it again in the span of the next thirty minutes? also yes. is he going to get over the shyness anytime soon? probably not.
#hendery
no amount of eyes can stop hendery from showering you with all the kisses and touches you deserve. he loves you and he's not afraid to show it - more than that, he might even get a slight ego boost from a stare or a teasing comment (to which he will respond with something along the lines of him being able to pull someone like you and make you embarrassed instead). he lives by the rule that if he can see you, he should be able to touch you and will sulk if you sit too far away for his liking. got past the stage where the members would tease him for pecking your lips by throwing shade back at them and now wouldn't even flinch if they walked into the room right into your make out session (which may or may not have happened).
#yangyang
he doesn't mind pda, but most of the time won't initiate it either. he's fine with more casual things like holding hands, hugging, or an occasional kiss on the cheek if that's something you're into, but he will get embarrassed and slightly uncomfortable if you do anything more without a warning, espacially in front of a bigger group of people. he has pretty strict boundaries in this matter but he's more than happy to communicate them to you and make sure he's aware of your own, as well as make sure that you don't feel pushed away. yangyang's also not a fan of showing affection in front of his members. he'll throw an arm around your shoulders when you're all watching a movie together if you've already been together for a while, but that's about it. you'll get all the cuddles and kisses in the world when you head to bed for the night though.

hi! hope youâre doing well and staying healthy đ©”
I was wondering if I could request a wayv reaction to their s/o out of nowhere smothering them with kisses please? hehe thatâll be all
thanks! <3
omg i literally love this my heart is sparkling !!
hope you enjoy !!
all the love ~ lunar
WayV Reactions: smothering them with kisses
Kun
initially he is going to be shocked, but like he would just kinda freeze where he is and process what is happening
once he finally understands that you are showing your love and affection, he swoops you into the warmest embrace
even if he tried, the smile etched on his lips is not going away any time soon
he would do one of those hugs where he picks you up and spins you around (a dream truly)
once he sets you back on the ground, he gladly returns the affection, making you flustered too
now the two of you are a blushing giggling mess but like its the cutest thing in the world
with Kun, thereâs something about it thatâs almost like âŠ. domestic
like the two of you never really get out of the honeymoon phase cause yall are just so excited when you get to see each other
and things like this never fail to show that
rest of members below the cut
Ten
oh goodness âŠ.
at first he might question whats happening
like whats with the sudden rush of affection (not that hes complaining)
would first ask if youâre okay
and then this man is going to tease you relentlessly
âyou miss me baby?â âi know, you want me so badâ
low key his teasing might ruin the moment
however !! he never fails to bring it back
like if u smother him with affection, and he starts teasing you, and you give him the side eye, hes gonna grab you and wrap you up in his arms and start leaving smooches all over your neck
slight chance it could turn into something steamyyy ;)
Winwin
genuinely would not know what to do
like he would turn into a sim (iykyk)
and would become an absolute blushing mess
once youâre done, he would just smile, and kiss your cheek
but honestly he would be too stunned to speak, like he would just be there blushing and giggling to himself
i think he has a little bit of a hard time in the sense that he always wants to make others happy, but when someone like compliments him, or when his partner shows him affection, he might freeze a little
but once he becomes more comfortable with the spontaneous smooches, hes more than happy to return them !!
honestly i think he would have an easier time showing affection to his partner
but he still would freeze up when the affection is a surprise like this
loves it regardless !!
Xiaojun
sweet baby angel is so shockedâŠ
like he initially is worried that youâre upset about something, or that he hasnât given you enough attention
starts asking if you are okay, or if something is wrong
once he finds out youâre okay, he smiles and pulls you in for a hug
heâs so sweet, but the embrace is low key a cover for the tickles that hes about to shock you with
will literally stand there tickling you, not to be mean or anything like that, just because he enjoys hearing your laugh
when hes done with the tickles, he smooches your lips a few times before pulling you back into a hug
will probably pull you to the couch and just hold you for a little bit too
simply wants to enjoy your presence, but he wont be able to hide the blush from your previous kisses
Hendery
i love this man with my entire being omg
Hendery will stand there as if he is processing what just happened
in reality, hes planning something else
hes really looking around and making sure the area is safe before he tackles you to the ground so that you dont actually get hurt
an affectionate tackle, that leads to an affectionate tickle fight, that leads to you literally crying from laughing so hard
yes he is blushing, but now you look like a tomato after he is done with his tickle fight
âHendery, i just wanted to kiss you!! why did you tickle me?â âbecause iâm literally in love with youâ
after you catch your breath, still pinned on the ground, he places the softest yet most passionate kiss on your lips
as if you werent already breathless before âŠ.
âyou know, you didnt kiss my lips once⊠you kissed everywhere but my lips actuallyâŠâ
the playful smirk never leaving his face as he teases you
omg iâm getting carried awayâŠ..
Yangyang
omg Yangyang is literally so cute about it
initially he will be a little surprised, but once your kiss attack has ended, its his turn
as soon as you stop smothering him in kisses, he starts smothering you in kisses
genuinely, i could see this continuing for a while too
like just back and forth attacking each other with affection
as it keeps going, he keeps getting closer and closer to your lips, till you two are locked in a passionate kiss
by the end of it, both of you are blushing like crazy, and giggling like youâve gone mad
hes absolutely pulling you into his lap, and simply staring at you as if there is nothing more beautiful in the world (hes not wrong)
keeps you in his lap the rest of the night
genuinely will pout if you try to leave
like âyou just smothered me with affection, and now you have the audacity to sit anywhere but my lap???â

best friend (âąïž) wayv !
thatâs just your bf, iâm sorry
kun
husband material wow. is so so sweet and gentle with you iâm jealous. casually does shit straight out of movies. like what do you mean he booked and planned the wholeee day for your birthday. absolutely melts when you show him the same affection. turns tomato red and canât stop smiling. prefers calling over texting because he âjust wants to hear your voice.â gives the warmest hugs.
ten
youâre each otherâs person, simply put. your nr 1 hypeman. encourages you to do fun adventurous things when you doubt yourself. yâall are basically the human embodiment of my aesthetic pinterest boards. goes out of his way to impress you because he just thinks youâre the most interesting person in the world. half of your feed consists of pictures taken by him. keeps joking about getting a tattoo related to you.
winwin
the only man ever. subtly shows his love. like fixing your necklace if the clasp is in the front. or holding your hands in his when itâs cold. âi brought you this cupcake, itâs really good.â pays attention to small things. like when you were stressed about how messy your bathroom was so he just casually got you an organizer. gets flustered when you hug him or kiss his cheek. (he loves it though).
xiaojun
you guys are so sweet omg. has a special nickname for you. loves pinching your chin or stroking your cheek :(. has this dopey, dreamy smile on his face whenever heâs watching you be cute. which is always, youâre always cute to him. the first person to notice if youâre upset and will do anything and everything to help. dramatically serenades you with a spoon while youâre cooking together.
hendery
always has an arm slung over your shoulders. loves telling you stupid jokes in your ear when youâre meant to be serious. biter. just gets this impulse to stick his chompers in your shoulder. gets nervous and blanks sometimes bc of how attracted he is to you. sends you shirtless snaps with his catsâąïž. gets all happy and teases you when your friends refer to him as your boyfriend.
yangyang
you have sooo much fun together omd. no wonder youâre together 24/7. always keeps your go to snacks STOCKED in his place. never lets you pay for anything. thinks you're the funniest person on earth. like he swears spending time with you is an ab workout. he is down horrendous for you and is past the point of caring to hide it. keeps forgetting it's mutual tho so he nearly has a heart attack whenever you compliment him or kiss his cheek.

who do you think in nct (minus the new team ofc) are the pussy eaters? like one thing about them is that they gon eat some pussy? probably even on the first link? im curious
Ooooo this is a good questionđ©đ©đ©
Yuta, Johnny, Haechan, Jeno, Renjun, Kun
These men lick their fingers clean when theyâre done with you. know those men that just stare at it and moan or say something like âfuckâ? Yup mhmm this is them right here. Definitely tells you how pretty it is and how good it tastes. They arenât messy and theyâre very focused on the task at hand. Experienced so theyâre in no rush. These are the pros NOT FOR BEGINNERS!!đ
Jaemin, Mark, Yang Yang , Xiaojun, Taeyong, Ten
đ©âđż. They eat it like they are STARVINGGGGGGGG. Unlike the pros these ones are messy. Baby youâre all over their face and they love that shit. Their face is in that bitch ya hear me??youâll hear all that slurping and moaning. Even when youâre done they still want more. STARVINGGGGG.
~~~~~~~~~~~
I am so sorry for this section but I have to tell you the truthđđżââïž
Jaehyun, winwin
Honey they just want to fuck. Half assed type of eating. âDid you cum yet?â They know where the clit is but pussy eating does not do it for them and theyâll let you know that by the lazy barely there licks they give youđđ
Jisung, jungwoo, hendery, chenle
They do not know what tf theyâre doingđ
They are willing to be taught though. Theyâre wild asf but in a âcalm down. Calm downâ type of way lmaooo once they get the hang of it theyâll definitely be in the starving and pro groups trust me. Hendery and chenle are more likely to be pros after a few lessons.
Doyoung
No thanks. He doesnât want to . Try again next time. Heâll accept bj and finger you. After that? Fucking. đ€·đżââïžđđđ
summary : after waking up from anesthesia, you're faced with a handsome stranger... who might not be all that unfamiliar after all
genre : fluff, kinda angst, kun x afab!reader tws : language, mentions of surgery (not specified for what), hospital/doctors environment author notes : she a wolf she a beauty and a beast she a wolf word count : 1.6k
you blinked a couple times, the fluorescent lights momentarily impairing your vision. a hand came up to block them, shielding you as you adjusted.Â
âitâll be a little bright,â a womanâs voice echoed in your hollow mind. âyouâll be a bit sensitive for a while.âÂ
you turned your head, a croaked groan leaving your lips. âmy arm hurts.âÂ
âitâs from the IV, weâll give you something to take home with you for all the pain.â she smiled, running her gloved hand along the tape and checking your veins color. âiâm going to check your vitals one last time and go grab your guardian, okay?â
you swallowed, nodding but not hearing what she had been explaining after. however, she was a nurse, so you believed her.Â
she took her time to check you over, making sure that everything was normal enough for a post-operation patient. your vision, hearing, blood pressure, heart rate and breathing. and by how long it took (which was only a couple minutes in reality) you were convinced she not only had double, but triple-checked.Â
you could remember the moment before you were put under, but everything else was still a little hazy, as if it was a dream. you could barely even think about anything other than what was right in front of your face.Â
she had asked you to confirm your last name and date of birth, the hesitation making her stifle a smile.Â
âiâm going to go get him now,â she took her stethoscope off, hanging it around her neck like a snake would. âitâll only take a minute, okay?âÂ
âwho?â you had asked, too late as she was already out of the room. you mustâve spaced out, trying to conjure up in your mind who she was talking about. âwho are you getting?âÂ
you stared at the wooden door for what felt like forever, contemplating what to tell the nurse when she came back with someone youâd never met.Â
you bit your lip, fidgeting with your fingers and picking at the skin until the door finally opened again.Â
your eyebrows came together, a familiar sense washing over you. you looked over the man at her side, and you swear you had to clench your teeth to keep your mouth from falling open; he was the most beautiful person youâd ever laid eyes on.Â
you know to each their own, but you wanted him to be your own. you couldnât stomach the thought of another girl perceiving him even though as far as you knew youâd never seen him before. i mean, how could you forget such a face?Â
he had a bright smile plastered to his god-awfully-pretty features. he glanced down at the nurse. âshe looks confused,â he laughed. âhas she not fully recovered from the anesthesia?âÂ
she hugged the clipboard in her hands close to her chest. ânot yet it seems, she asked who i was getting earlier. it should wear offâwe had to give her a slightly higher dose.âÂ
so, she did hear you but, chose to ignore you? that was cruel, however a laugh threatened to escape your throat⊠maybe it was the hyper amount of drugs you were on.Â
maybe she hasnât actually gone and got him (whoever he was) yet, maybe she had grabbed another nurse; a doctor; an anesthesiologist. but he didnât look like a doctor, or anything of the sort, clothed regularly. he looked smart, but in other sensesânon-medical.Â
nonetheless, you couldnât help feeling like you knew him. somewhere in the back of your mind you knew you could conjure up his name, and you cursed yourself for forgetting someone so beautiful.Â
the nurse came back over to you after washing her hands, pulling the rolling stool up to your bed.Â
you leaned in. âhow do i know him?âÂ
she laughed again, but it wasnât funny to you. you were starting to feel distressed, stupid even, because even she couldnât understand how youâd forgotten him. she leaned in whispering. âyour husband.âÂ
shocked was the simplest word you couldâve used.
âthis might bruise, but itâll go away within a couple days. and, your memory will come back within the hour, okay?â she started to remove the covers from your body, your bare legs on display. âand, you can change back into your regular clothes now, iâll step out.â she turned to the man. âjust let me know when sheâs ready and weâll go over the post procedure process, and schedule her a follow-up appointment.âÂ
âokay, sounds good.â he smiled as the nurse began exiting the room. âthank you.âÂ
the clicking of the door rang out against the silence, and you swallowed the lump in your throat. your eyes mustâve been wide, eyebrows confused as you looked him over again.Â
âmy what?â you finally spewed out.Â
âhusband, y/n.â he smiled, walking over to you. âwe got married two months ago. iâm a little hurt that you forgot the best day of my life.âÂ
âi-i,â you began, watching as he picked your clothes up off the side table. âi donât need help.âÂ
âyes, maâam.â he seemed a little taken aback, obviously amused. âwhatever you want, love.âÂ
you groaned as you willed your legs over the side. you were still a little skeptical, but it was starting to come back to you; how could you actually forget?Â
there was a feeling inside telling you that youâd been with him way longer than the two months, and his presence was starting to jog your memoriesâmaybe that was the trick to getting them back. him. your presumed husband.Â
despite feeling determined too, you couldnât even stand up, stumbling back over when you tried. he flinched towards you, but stopped himself, obviously wanting to respect your prior direction.Â
you didnât want to give inâstill a little uncomfortable with the whole thing. you wanted to make him turn around, but you feared it was him that would be doing all the work in a couple of seconds. mind over matter though, right?
the bed let out a loud crack when you tried to stand again, this time he wouldnât (couldnât) stand back and watch.Â
âiâm sorry,â he whispered, coming in front of you and grabbing your arms. âjust let me help you.âÂ
you bit your lip, being raised by his strong, yet gentle grip. âi promise thereâs nothing to worry about.âÂ
you nodded, feeling a sense of relief at his touchâone you didnât know you could feel for him. âo-okay.âÂ
âcan you stand on your own now?â he asked, carefully letting go of your skin, but keeping them close in case you started to tip.Â
once he made sure you could, he reached down to your knees, holding the hem of the hospital-gown. you took his forearm within your fingers, non-verbally telling him to stop. your stomach was turning, but you trusted him? a feeling you donât know where it came from.Â
âif i close my eyes, will that be better?â he glanced at you, soft eyes catching your perplexed ones. âiâll do whatever you need, y/n.âÂ
you nodded again, not really sure what to say. how would he know what he was doing with closed eyes? how could he feel so strongly towards you that he was prepared to do anything? but, he did as promised, fingers accidentally grazing your torso when he dragged the fabric up.Â
the touch, however, sent you reeling, and suddenly you could remember a little over 6 months ago when he proposed. the night you cried like a baby, the man of your dreams down on one knee in front of you.Â
the whole situation was also now starting to get on your nerves. whyâd you forget? whyâd it all start coming back with his lingering touch? whyâd you have to get a case of amnesia? why couldnât you just remember? you really wanted to.Â
he kept his eyes closed, reaching to the clothes and feeling for your shirt. he found it, holding it up. âright way?â he asked. you hummed in response, helping it over your head. this time, as he adjusted the hem, his hands held your waist, twisting the fabric. but, it reminded you of further back, when you made him slow dance with you on the second dateâeven before youâd ever kissedâyour arms draped around his neck, bodies swaying in a gentle rhythm.
you remember enough to know how you felt about him. you remember enough to know you loved him eternally.Â
âkunâŠâ his eyes shot open, hands stilling in their spot. âiâm sorry.âÂ
he grabbed you further. âwhy?â he asked, genuinely confused by your apology. you had nothing to be sorry for, he was only joking when he said he was hurt by your medically-caused amnesia. it happens. he knew youâd never be able to really forget him. âwhy are you sorry, my love?âÂ
you put your arms around his neck, embracing him in a tight hug. a long overdue hug. you pulled your head away, feeling a shiver down your spine when his hands stroked along it soothingly. you kissed the side of his mouth, causing a gentle smile.Â
âi didnât mean t-to. i forgââÂ
âdonât apologize.â he interrupted. âyou remember now.âÂ
how could you ever really forget?Â
âyeah,â you laughed. âitâs all coming back to me.âÂ
he pressed his lips to yours, and you urgently recognized fine-details that youâd engrained to memory. little things about him and your life that you could never discard as irrelevantâeverything about him was relevant to you. you loved him, and part of love meant knowing it all. knowing the gorgeous and down-right nasty about each other, but still seeing them in the same light. and, youâd already learned everything about him, as he did you, vowing to commit your life to each other; and the next one, and the next one. forever and ever. for better or for worse. through sickness and health, poverty and wealth.Â
âtill death do us part.Â
reblogs, likes and comments are greatly appreciated! thank u!
wayv + types of kisses !
wayv scenario on their favorite place to kiss you
content : fluff fluff fluff
kun
forehead kisses. after a long day he'd just pull you in and give you a kiss on your forehead, holding you close to him. holds your face in his hands before kissing your forehead then your lips gently. after a movie night and you falling asleep in his arms he would bring you to bed, giving you a kiss on your forehead before you both fall asleep.
ten
hand kisses. other than this mans beautiful hands, he loves yours as well. whether its you kissing his or him kissing yours, it's his favorite spot to kiss. lovessss holding your hand, whenever you guys are out he's gonna have it held, pulling it closer to him as he gives you little pecks on the back of your palm every now and then. loves playing with your hands as well, smiling to himself when he does.
winwin
cheek kisses. i feel like he's more on the shy side when showing affection, definitely blushing every time you kiss each other. loves putting his arm around your shoulder and just kissing you on the cheek. holding your face in his hands and kissing both of your cheeks. soft giggles when you guys kiss, when you're alone he loves to keep you close to him.
xiaojun
lips. whether you're alone or with the members, you're his! doesn't care who's watching, if he wants to kiss you he'll kiss you. you know when he wants a kiss because he'll never take his eyes off you before pulling you in a giving you a peck on your lips, which usually turns into more when you guys are alone. loves to see you a blushing mess before he pulls you into a hug and kisses you once more, laughing softly when he pulls away.
hendery
collarbone kisses. every day he comes home and just wants to lay in your arms. loves when you rub his back as he just kisses your collarbone, peppering kisses over you as he shows his love for you, smiling against your skin. loves when you play with his hair while he does this as well. its never a dull moment when you're with hendery.
yangyang
neck kisses. started when he used to hug you from behind, smiling as he gave u a soft kiss on your neck. he saw how you had reacted to that, and decided to start kissing your neck more often. you'd always fold when he kissed your neck (the yangyang effect) and he would be a smiling mess when he did, even if it was just a small peck. or more when you guys were in bed.
a/n : reqs open !! NCT only, all units :3 plsplspls req. i hope u guys enjoyed this...i really enjoy writing these little scenarios <3
after your college had announced that all the students were required to join a club and attend it twice a week, you were planning on either a) dropping out, or b) join the art club and pretend to be sick most of the times. that was before you discovered that park jisung is a long time member of the football team. change in plans: you LOVE football.
or in which you mindlessly join the football club in hopes of catching your crushâs attention (and to maybe secretly check him out too) who cares if you canât even kick a ball up in the air?
cute dates with boyfriend!wayv
kun invites you over to his apartment to cook dinner and have a relaxing wine night. except maybe it wasn't that relaxing since you both turn it into a tipsy masterchef cooking competition. although you are quite intimidated by his cooking skills, you don't let that stop you from trying your best (which wasn't very good). kun, being the nicest guy ever, lets you win. the winner chooses the loser's punishment. you make him wear an embarrassing apron that says "kiss the cook but don't touch the buns" kun complies and prays the pictures you took of him on your phone never end up in yangyang's hands, or else he would never hear the end of it.
ten loves volunteering at the animal shelter, especially a shelter with lots of cats who need extra love and attention. you and ten spend the whole day playing with the cats, feeding them, cleaning out their cages, and brushing their fur. he almost wants to adopt yet another cat or two or three, but you gently remind him this isn't in real life neko atsume so he cannot collect all the cats in the world (unfortunately). ten's eyes soften when he sees you cuddling a senior kitty and he can't help but think to himself he wants to raise many cats with you in the future.
winwin would take you to the beach on a sunny day to enjoy the light breeze and salty air until the sun sets. you notice how he doesn't even try to hide the fact that he is checking you out. winwin compliments you endlessly and gives you one of his jackets to cover up because he hates the thought of other people staring at you. throughout the day, you help each other reapply sunscreen, and you giggle whenever he struggles to squeeze the tube that barely has any sunscreen left, because it sounds exactly like someone after they eat taco bell. during moments he thinks you aren't looking, winwin manages to find a pretty pearly white seashell among the billions of grains of sand and gives it to you.
xiaojun would invite you over to his place and you guys spend the whole time building legos and geeking out over the newest flower and plant lego sets. he starts sweating when your hand accidentally touches his hand while reaching for the same lego piece, even though you guys are literally dating. silly ahh boy. after you both finish building the set in one sitting, xiaojun makes you one of his famous oreo mug cakes, and he makes sure to lightly blow on the spoonful of batter to cool it down before feeding it to you and watching you eat it (he is so whipped for you)
hendery would take you to a hong kong style cafe. it's cozy and cute, and has lots of history behind how the shop came to be what it is today. you have trouble deciding what to order since you are unfamiliar with cantonese food but hendery excitedly explains each dish in detail just for you. once you decide what to get, hendery orders for you in cantonese, which makes you fall in love with him all over again. his eyes light up when you show interest in learning a few canto phrases and he feels his heart melt a little when you repeat after his words and ask if your pronounciation was okay.
yangyang loves going to the arcade section in the amusement park. the bright, colorful lights, silly circus music, and sound effects from the machines makes him feel like he's reliving his childhood again. yangyang tries to show off his claw machine skills because he wants to impress you. he literally tries so hard and finally wins a plushie for you after his like eleventh attempt. while yangyang is rambling on about how the "claw machine was rigged" and how "it wasn't a skill issue" on his part, you give him a quick kiss on the cheek, which makes him shut up immediately and start blushing furiously.
#shoutout to cookie anon for the yy arcade idea#ten having so many pet cats is so endearing to me#hendery speaking cantonese has GOT to be one of my favorite genres#kun would find himself in this situation i just know it#i need another livestream of xiaojun building legos#good god i miss winwin sm#wayv scenarios#wayv xiaojun#wayv hendery#wayv yangyang#wayv imagines#wayv fanfic#wayv fluff#wayv x you#wayv x reader#wayv kun#wayv ten#ten lee#nct ten#ten x reader#ten fluff#xiaojun fluff#xiaojun x reader#wayv winwin#nct wayv#nct winwin#winwin x reader#winwin x y/n#wayv angst#wayv smut
አWayV Kun x fem-bodied!reader አwords: ~700 አgenre: smut (mean dom!Kun, fingering, mentions of edging, reader cums without permission, overstimulation & forced orgasm as punishment, daddy kink, a bit of degradation, reader is called slut once) አreader: has a vagina, no description of chest, no pronouns used to refer to reader አwarnings: heavy dom-sub dynamics አprompt: âDo you think you deserve this?â
Authorâs note: A daddy kink??? On my blog????? đ«Ł
Your legs are trembling and your back is pressed against his chest as youâre sitting in front of the mirror at the edge of the bed, his fingers working inside you, and with each time he grazes that perfect spot in your dripping pussy, you go a little more insane.Â
âDonât you dare cum,â Kun mutters, his voice low but clear, and you shiver at his words. Youâre so close, hanging on by a thread after heâs already edged you twice, and you know if he doesnât pull out soon, youâre not gonna be able to obey him.
âC-canât⊠t-take itâŠâ you stutter, needing all your brainpower to somehow keep yourself from tumbling over the edge right then and there, and the way he keeps talking to you along with the way his hard cock is pressing right against the small of your back isnât helping either. âP-pleaseâŠâ you whine.
âPlease whatâŠâ He watches your reflection in the mirror with calm eyes, fingers skillfully curling against your walls at just the right angle - or well, the entirely wrong angle if the goal is not to cum.Â
âL-let me cum⊠pleaseâŠâ
âHmmmâŠâ he pretends to be thinking about it, enjoying the way youâre fighting to regain control over your own body thatâs about to betray you. âDo you think you deserve that?â
âY-ye..sâŠâ you hiccup, and you shut your eyes tightly, and maybe that was the big mistake you made. Because once you open them again, seeing the angle at which his digits are fucking into your cunt, your legs all spread out for him, while his other arm is wrapped around your waist to keep you pressed against his chest, you know itâs over. âS-sorryâŠ!â Thatâs the last thing you can force yourself to say before your orgasm overwhelms you, shaking you whole as he fingers you right through it.
âSuch a little slut⊠canât help but cum watching yourself being fucked like this, huh?â You respond with a pained whine, pleasure leading over into overstimulation as he presses his thumb against your clit until youâre shaking uncontrollably in his hold and the once so pleasurable touch now burns like fire.
âF-fuck⊠p-please⊠t-too muchâŠ!â you whine as you squirm, trying to escape him, but he has you secure in his hold, not budging at your attempts to free yourself. And then, through the way the pain is clouding your mind, you can feel him moving behind you, rutting against your ass while he sinks his teeth into your nape.
âShouldnât have done that, hm?â he growls now, becoming breathless himself as he can feel you struggle in his arms. âShouldnât have cum without daddyâs permission.â
âS-sorry⊠âm sorry⊠so sorryâŠâ you repeat over and over again, your head spinning from how youâre losing control over the way your body is squirming under his touch while he keeps fucking his fingers into you and very slowly you can feel another high building up in your stomach.
âWhat do we say?â Kun asks, and if you werenât so out of it yourself you mightâve noticed the strain on his voice as heâs speaking.
âS-sorry daddy⊠s-sorryâŠâ you mewl.
âFuck, thatâs right⊠youâre so fucking cute like thisâŠâ
âMmmh,â you whimper, and then another high washes over you suddenly. Itâs like your whole body is burning up in a mixture of pain and pleasure as you contract around his digits, your mind going blank at once, and this time he pulls out and lets you recover once youâre coming down from it. And as consciousness is slowly returning to you, you notice the warm sensation on your back - he too found his release, cumming all over you from behind.
âLearned your lesson?â he asks, hand wrapping around your throat and tilting up your head so you would look at him through the mirror. You know he pushed you this far just so he could see you lose and consequently punish you - and itâs not like you hate it when he does that. Still, what else is there left to do for you than to nod obediently, your body still shaking as you speak,
âYes, daddy.â
