Stampede Horror at Maha Kumbh: Chaos, Panic, and Heartbreaking Loss
The Maha Kumbh Mela, a grand spiritual gathering that draws millions, turned into a scene of unimaginable horror as a stampede broke out at the Sangam ghat on Mauni Amavasya. Eyewitnesses recount the harrowing moments of chaos, desperation, and grief as they searched for their missing loved ones amid an atmosphere of confusion and official silence.
A Day of Uncertainty and Despair
By 9 PM, the day had witnessed relentless panic and grief. Outside the mortuary of Motilal Nehru Medical College, a thinning crowd of relatives still searched for missing family members. Earlier, the city’s hospitals had been flooded with desperate families seeking information. Roads were blocked, key routes barricaded, and official communication remained scarce. Even by evening, no confirmed count of the deceased had been announced, only repeated appeals to stay calm and ignore rumors.
Voices of Agony and Frustration
As officials struggled to manage the crisis, eyewitnesses described the chilling moments leading up to the disaster. Ajay Kumar Yadav, searching for his missing sister Renu, expressed his distress: “I asked the police to make an announcement, but they told me to wait in line. How can we wait when our loved ones are missing?”
The aftermath of the stampede was evident in the scattered remains—torn sandals, clothes, water bottles, and personal belongings littered the ground as security forces attempted to restore order. A viral video showed panicked devotees pushing open a barricade as security personnel struggled to contain the crowd.
Eyewitness Accounts of the Tragedy
Many accounts pointed to overcrowding at the ghat due to three out of four access gates being closed, funneling devotees into a single passage. The sudden swell of people turned deadly as a barrier gave way.
A Tragedy That Could Have Been Prevented
The Maha Kumbh Mela, touted as a symbol of state efficiency, has now become a grim reminder of the perils of mismanagement. While meticulous records were kept of every visitor and every dip taken in the river, the authorities failed when it mattered most—ensuring the safety of the devotees.
In the wake of this disaster, questions linger. How did the crowd control measures fail so drastically? Why was there no proper emergency response? As grieving families struggle to make sense of their loss, they demand answers—and justice—for the lives lost in the chaos.
For now, Prayagraj mourns. And the echoes of the desperate cries—ignored in the moment—will haunt this Maha Kumbh forever. For latest news India in Hindi, subscribe to our newsletter!

This actress, who lived outside India for 24 years, had claimed that she had been a celibate for 12 years.
She reached Maha Kumbh and met Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Dr. Laxmi Narayan Tripathi in Kinnar Akhara. Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni became Mahamandaleshwar of Kinnar Akhara. She performed Pind Daan on the banks of Sangam. Now she will be known as Mamta Nand Giri. Only her coronation is left.

Kinnar Akhara has maintained complete secrecy regarding making Mamta Mahamandaleshwar.
Mamta Kulkarni was missing from India for 24 years
According to media reports, the 90s Bollywood actress returned to India a few months ago after 24 years. Why did she disappear from India and will she return to Bollywood after returning to India? After his arrival, my interest in spirituality increased. After this, my penance started."
'I spent my life in a two bedroom hall in Dubai for many years'
Mamta Kulkarni also said, "I believe that Bollywood gave me name and fame but after this I left Bollywood as well. I kept doing tapasya from 2000 to 2012. I was in Dubai for many years and lived in a two bedroom hall. I was a brahmachari for 12 years."

Stampede at Maha Kumbh: 30 Injured, Holy Dip Cancelled
Following the incident, the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad took the significant decision to call off the Amrit Snan for Mauni Amavasya. Mahant Ravindra Puri, President of the Akhara Parishad, stated, "Seeing what happened this morning, we have decided to cancel the snan. Our saints and seers were ready, but we prioritize safety."
Akhada Parishad General Secretary Mahant Hari Giri also urged devotees to perform the holy bath in the Ganga at their local areas instead of traveling to Prayagraj.
Government Response and Crowd Control Measures
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and directed immediate relief efforts. Authorities closed pontoon bridges to prevent further crowd surges and ensured strict security measures.
To manage the overwhelming crowd, authorities deployed AI-powered surveillance, drones, and additional police personnel. The Kumbh Mela area has been designated a no-vehicle zone, with local residents encouraged to use two-wheelers only for essential travel.
Unprecedented Pilgrim Influx and Rail Arrangements
With nearly five crore people already in Prayagraj a day before the Amrit Snan, authorities had predicted the crowd to reach 10 crore on Mauni Amavasya. The Indian Railways is running 360 trains, including 190 special services, ensuring smooth travel for pilgrims.
Significance of Mauni Amavasya
The Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya is considered the most auspicious bathing day of the Maha Kumbh. This year, it holds special spiritual significance due to the rare celestial alignment of ‘Triveni Yog,’ occurring once every 144 years. Traditionally, the Akharas belonging to the Sanyasi, Bairagi, and Udaseen sects take the holy dip in a grand procession.
Despite the unfortunate incident, the Maha Kumbh 2025 continues to witness an overwhelming participation, with over 15 crore pilgrims taking the sacred dip since its commencement on January 13. Authorities remain on high alert to prevent further mishaps as the festival progresses until February 26. For top news headlines India in Hindi, subscribe to our newsletter!

[ad_1] A rare handwritten letter by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, penned in 1974, has become the center of global attention after it was auctioned by Bonhams for a staggering $500,312 (Rs 4.32 crore). Addressed to his childhood friend Tim Brown, the letter, written just a day before Jobs’ 19th birthday, provides a window into the visionary’s introspective side and his deep spiritual connection with India. In the letter, Jobs shares his plan to visit India for the Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering. Reflecting on Zen Buddhism and his quest for spiritual enlightenment, he writes, “I wish to go to India for the Kumbh Mela, which starts in April. I will be leaving sometime in March, not really certain yet.” He ends the heartfelt letter with “Shanti, Steve Jobs,” underscoring his reverence for Hindu philosophy. Jobs’ spiritual journey to India remains a significant chapter of his life. Initially intending to visit the ashram of Neem Karoli Baba in Uttarakhand, Jobs arrived in Nainital only to learn that the revered spiritual leader had passed away the previous year. Unshaken, he stayed at the ashram in Kainchi Dham, drawing inspiration from Neem Karoli Baba’s teachings. Jobs spent seven transformative months in India, immersing himself in the country’s culture and spirituality. His return to the U.S. marked a profound change in his appearance and outlook. He described to his parents, “My head had been shaved, I was wearing Indian cotton robes, and my skin had turned a deep, chocolate brown-red from the sun.” Adopting the orange robes of a Sadhu, Jobs credited this period for shaping his iconic minimalist philosophy and creative genius. Nearly 50 years later, Jobs’ spiritual connection with India continues to inspire. His wife, Laurene Powell Jobs, recently fulfilled one of his long-held wishes by attending the Maha Kumbh Mela in 2025. Despite facing health challenges, including allergies, Laurene remains determined to participate in the ritual of bathing in the sacred Ganga River.
