...dance 'til you find someone to die for...
What if instead of Seth, Riko tried to get rid of Aaron?
Chapter 6 ♟️ [table of contents]
(CW: alcoholism, addiction, talk of relapse, abuse, mental health issues)
This revelation of Kevin’s, this wish, his promise, as soon as it was thought, seemed to become his new mantra, instead of the usual Play, Win, Survive, the endless One more day.
This revelation of Kevin’s, this wish, this Riko should be dead, a promise, as soon as it was born, also seemed to put changes in motion in the universe, in retaliation for such a foolish and disrespectful idea.
In other words, Edgar Allan, and Riko, proceeded to finish what they’d started.
Ravens were everywhere.
At first, only for Kevin to see. Dressed in all-black with hints of crimson red, dispersed in the crowd, only visible if you’re looking for them. And Kevin is always looking. He feels something coming, and not just because he is paranoid that his words will cost him.
Seeing Rourke, Ryan and Steele in the bleachers of every Foxes’ game confirms everything Kevin feared.
Noticing Maz, Kucheck, Craig and Belfort in the dark corners of Eden’s Twilight settles everything Kevin already knew in his heart.
Riko is coming.
And this time, he won’t leave loose ends.
Kevin doesn’t know if Riko will stop at Aaron, or if he’ll go after Neil, Andrew, and the other Foxes as well. He doesn’t know how to communicate the threat that is coming their way. How do you go about revealing such a dangerous and shattering truth to a group of people who are barely holding on as it is?
And Aaron… Aaron still won’t speak about that night. Kevin doesn’t know what it’s gonna take to make him talk.
Neil doesn’t care, hasn’t even asked questions about why the drugs were there, who got in and why Aaron was the target.
He must know something.
But Kevin doesn’t ask.
As for Andrew, as long as there is no repeat of that night, as long as Aaron stays on the right track, he seems to completely disregard the events of that fateful night.
But it’s all Kevin can think about.
If nobody will speak of it, if nobody will do a thing about, then Kevin has to keep it all inside, has to be the guardian of that dirty secret. He feels dirtier with every day that passes, feels sicker, weaker, guiltier…
How did they get in?
And who got in?
How did they know about Aaron’s history?
Is there someone on the team who’s playing double agent?
Is there a traitor among the Foxes?
Who could it be?
Could it be…  Neil?
Kevin feels like throwing up just having the audacity to think about such an accusation. Surely, surely, Andrew would know by now if Neil was a threat…
Surely, surely, Andrew would know better…
Kevin spends his nights spiralling down a bottle of vodka.
By the time the Fall Banquet rounds the corner, Kevin drinks more than he sleeps, more than he eats, more than he studies, almost, almost more than he practices and plays.
Kevin can’t stand it anymore.
Neither can Aaron.
He makes his move on the bus ride to Blackwell University. He witnessed Wymack handing Kevin a bottle and he almost threw a fit right there and then.
As soon as the bus starts, Aaron pushes himself off of his seat at the complete back of the bus and aggressively sits down beside Kevin. He openly steals the bottle and throws it out the window, the Foxes too busy and too loud to notice the movement or the crash of glass against concrete; Wymack too focused on getting out the parking lot; Neil and Andrew too lost in each other’s bullshit; and Kevin, too stunned to move faster than Aaron.
“Now what in the everlasting hell has crawled up your ass and died!?” Kevin rudely shouts at Aaron, his fists tightening on themselves.
“Your constant state of inebriety is making it very difficult for me to stay sober, Day. If you don’t wanna add that to your list of sins, you better stop drinking yourself into oblivion,” Aaron calmly replies.
“You– Wha– Huh…?” Kevin stammers.
“I see alcohol has already ruined you ability to speak. Next your liver will fail you, as will your memory and your oh so precious Exy skills. If I were you, I’d start a detox in the far confines of Utah right away before it’s too late. Would give us some peace and quiet for a while, too, more so if you pack up fucking Josten in your carry-on,” Aaron continues while staring straight ahead.
Kevin is speechless.
Would he really want…?
“Would you really want me gone?” Kevin asks quietly.
Aaron considers Kevin for the first time since switching seats, as if seeing him in a whole new light.
“I’d want you to stop ruining yourself with vodka, that’s for sure. And to be rid of fucking Josten would be a God-given gift. But… It’s just really, really hard to watch you drink and drink and drink when you’re basically our only hope at Championships and the only thing keeping this team together. And you drink, and drink, and drink, and all I get is cracker dust and God I wish… It’s just… hard. You make it very hard, Kevin.”
If Kevin wasn’t that speechless before, he definitely was now.
“Did you just– Did you just admit that I’m the superior player of this team?” Kevin asks too seriously to be considered teasing.
“No one will believe you,” Aaron replies, turning his gaze back to the front of the bus.
“…Thanks. I guess. Also, fuck you,” Kevin says.
“Yeah, yeah. I have eyes, you know. And ears. I hear you every time you uncap a Smirnoff. I see you every night, passed out drunk and not really sleeping. It’s more like you’re in limbo. I heard you last night, too. When you threw that bottle across the bathroom floor. I’m the one who cleaned it up this morning before Andrew or Nicky could see you. I fucking hate bathrooms. The worse seems to happen in them…” Aaron reveals.
“Oh…” is all Kevin can reply.
“Yeah, 'oh’. You’re welcome, by the way. But like… Don’t get this wrong, I don’t give a single fuck about you, but I can’t have you sink lower into alcoholism while I’m trying my best not to relapse. I swear to God, I’m not letting Andrew lock me up again. Never again,” Aaron murmurs quickly between two shallow breaths.
“I– I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Kevin lies.
“Oh really? Which part? The part where you’re a raging alcoholic in denial, or the part where Andrew is the worst sober buddy? Because, newsflash, you’re well-aware of both these facts. You’re such a liar, Day,” Aaron responds, bitter.
“Pot, meet kettle,” Kevin gestures between them, defeated.
“Ah, touché.”
Both sit in silence for a while, Kevin’s fidgeting increasing by the minute.
“You know who’s waiting for me at the Banquet. I don’t need to remind you that they might be waiting for you, too. For all of us, maybe,” Kevin says in a shaky voice. “Everybody’s completely fine with letting me face them with Absolut as my only shield. They know as much as I do that I can’t deal with anything while sober. So what do you expect me to do? Suddenly grow a spine I’ve never had and what, stand up to him?”
“Exactly that, cowboy.”
“You’re a fucking jerk, you know that?” Kevin spits.
“Tell me, whose spine got out of Evermore? Whose spine got back into Exy? Whose spine learned to play right-handed, and still stubbornly tries to rehabilitate its left hand? Yeah, I know about that too. You have spasms when you sleep that weren’t there before when you arrived. I put two and two together. Tell me, Day, whose spine was it?” Aaron probes.
“I–”
“Yours, Kevin. That’s the only answer there is. You’re not the poster child of bravery, I’ll give you that, but then none of us are. So, I’ll ask you this: can you, or can you not, face the Ravens sober tonight?” Aaron goes on.
Could he?
Could he possibly…?
“And what would I get out of it, huh? An awesome mental breakdown? A terrific panic attack? What are you willing to give me that could possibly rival the deadly trap we’re about to walk into?” Kevin angrily asks.
“My game.”
A silence.
“I’ll give you my game.”
