bored without hockey? try following mushing!
if you’re looking for smth to follow sports-wise without hockey going on, the iditarod is still continuing! as of right now, at least. considering, you know, it’s in the alaskan wilderness and without crowds. dogsledding is an absolutely fascinating sport I started following after reading blair braverman’s book, which i can’t recommend enough. she’s a very cool follow on twitter in general (@blairbraverman), and is covering the race with ADN, as her husband (@QuinceMountain), the first openly trans musher to run the race, competes in his rookie race.
you can also follow through:
@IditarodInsider - the official account for the race
@ADNIditarod - anchorage daily news’ coverage
@IditarodKTVA - KTVA’s coverage
and of course, you can find other accounts who are covering through the ones listed above, specifically blair’s! i hope at least some of you gain a little appreciation for this impressive sport and the lifestyle it takes.
-
a couple resources: about the iditarod, blair braverman’s faq, alaska public media’s youtube, mushing terminology, and a brief investigation into the question “is the iditarod cruel to dogs?”

Man Get 100 Years For Christmas Eve Massacre
Jaylyn Franklin, 22, of Anchorage, was sentenced to 100 years in prison for murdering a couple on Christmas Eve of 2016.
Originally, he was charged with 1st degree murder, 2nd degree murder and armed robbery for killing Christopher and Danielle Brooks at their residence, while Danielle Brooks' young son watched.
The victim's young son later told police on the scene that “ninjas” had killed his parents.
The 100 year sentence was part of a plea deal. Franklin pleaded guilty to two counts of 2nd degree murder, receiving 10 years suspended on each count, to be served consecutively, with an additional 20 years of suspended time and 10 years of felony probation.
Two more defendants, Lamarkus Mann, and Savon Wiley, will be sentenced beginning July 8 of this year. Another man charged regarding the deaths has not yet had a trial date set.
The couple's six-year-old son told police: 'Ninjas came to my home and killed my family.' He said the masked men also told him to go to his room.
The boy is now in the care of his grandmother Debra Brooks, who told KTVA: 'He's having nightmares about ninjas. It’s unfair because he’s gotta grow up without a mother and a father.'
The suspects, who knew Christopher Brooks, planned to rob the couple, police said.
Franklin, who was arrested and charged with murder, robbery, burglary and tampering with evidence, initially told police he was walking with Harris when they came across a man who was shot.
He later gave police a different account and said they met Mann, who asked if they wanted to make money, according to an affidavit cited by CBS.
Mann said Christopher Brooks was expecting him to go to his house later that day, and another unnamed man drove the three suspects part of the way there, according to the affidavit.
Franklin said they covered their faces with t-shirts before entering the home, where Mann 'began demanding drugs and money', according to the affidavit.
Police said Mann shot Danielle Brooks first, and they arrived at the 4100 block of Peterkin Avenue to find her dead at the scene.
Mann and Christopher Brooks struggled over the gun, and Harris tried to jump in and help, according to police and court documents. Both Harris and Christopher Brooks were shot in the process.
Christopher Brooks managed to exit the home, and police arrived to find him collapsed outside. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.
The robbers fled the scene in a Honda Ridgeline, according to court documents, and Mann has a warrant out for his arrest for murder, robbery and burglary.
Franklin, who admitted to deleting text messages regarding the double homicide, was charged with two counts of murder and one count of robbery, burglary, and tampering with evidence.
Harris was also charged with murder, robbery and burglary, according to court documents cited by the Alaska Dispatch News. He was in the hospital being treated for a gunshot wound, according to the affidavit.

Alaska ferry struck by breaching whale, prompting federal investigation
Pete Thomas - June 22, 2018
Fisheries officials in Alaska are concerned that a large whale that struck a state ferry last week has died and might still represent a navigational hazard. The MV Tustumena, while traveling from Homer to Kodiak last Wednesday morning, was hit by a breaching whale that briefly came to rest upon a horizontal stabilizer fin on the vessel’s right side.
No injuries were reported among passengers or crew as a result of the bizarre collision, and after a minute or two the whale became dislodged and swam away. The mammal, however, appeared to be seriously injured. The incident occurred off Marmot Bay. Despite damage to its stabilizing system, the 290-foot ferry was able to complete its voyage.
“The ferry was traveling through an area with lots of whale pods and it was taking its typical precautions to avoid them,” Aurah Landau, a spokeswoman for the Alaska Marine Highway System, told KTVA. “This one just came up at a 90-degree angle and it was impossible to avoid it.”
Landau told Radio Kenai: “This is extremely rare. The Marine Highway System is very protective with the measures that it takes to avoid hitting marine mammals. We actively work to avoid strikes, and then handle them as responsibly as possible when they do happen.”
Julie Speegle, a spokeswoman for NOAA Fisheries, told KTVA that ships in the region occasionally strike whales, but it’s extremely rare for a whale to launch upward and land on a ship.
“I don’t know that it’s ever happened before” in Alaska waters, Speegle said.
Experts believe that the mammal was a fin whale or sei whale – the planet’s second and third largest whale species, respectively. That in itself would be unusual in that these large whales, unlike much smaller and more active humpback whales, rarely breach.
Said Speegle: “We’re keeping an eye out for floating whales it’s pretty likely that this whale did not survive.”
The public is asked to report sightings of dead or injured whales to the state’s Marine Mammal Stranding Network.
