Started reading this today. Snow In May - Kseniya Melnik. It was only as I was adding the details to my reading journal that I spotted that the book was actually published on 23rd April 2005. I’ve started reading it 6 years to the day. First story “Love, Italian Style, or In Line For Bananas” read. I like what I’m reading so far. #book #greatreads #reading #author #books #booknerd #booklover #bookcommunity #bookaddict #booksbooksbooks #kseniyamelnik #snowinmay #positivevibes #bookvibes #readingvibes #foodforthebrain #positivewaves #metalhobbit (at Birmingham, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/COAu43eJF1G/?igshid=tqorf36swcy7

Comprised of a surprising mix of newly minted professionals, ex-prisoners, intellectuals, musicians, and faithful Party workers, the community is vibrant and resilient and life in Magadan thrives even under the cover of near-perpetual snow. By blending history and fable, each of Melnik's stories transports us somewhere completely new: a married Magadan woman considers a proposition from an Italian footballer in '70s Moscow; an ailing young girl visits a witch doctor’s house where nothing is as it seems; a middle-aged dance teacher is entranced by a new student’s raw talent; a former Soviet boss tells his granddaughter the story of a thorny friendship; and a woman in 1958 jumps into a marriage with an army officer far too soon. Weaving in and out of the last half of the twentieth century, Snow in May is an inventive, gorgeously rendered, and touching portrait of lives lived on the periphery where, despite their isolation—and perhaps because of it—the most seemingly insignificant moments can be beautiful, haunting, and effervescent.. As a follow up to my recent posting about Vadim Kozin, my sister sent me a link to writer John King’s podcast site that featured an article/podcast about Kozin, written/narrated by young author Kseniya Melnik. She spent the first 15 years of her life in Kozin’s exiled city of Magadan and as a young girl, she attended the concert held in honor of his 90th birthday. However, she knew little about him and did not really “discover” Kozin and his music until she was in her twenties and living in America. She is a first time author of Snow In May, a connected series of fictional short stories based in Magadan and she tells how she vacillated on ideas involving writing about Kozin in her book. As my sister points out, Kozin’s story would make a fascinating book and/or movie, and as Melnik points out, it would take an exhaustible amount of research with the possibility that much of the missing pieces of his life story would never be unearthed.

Quote
Kruchina was an archaic word for grief, found mostly in the old songs and poems. Kruchina grief was not regular sadness or disappointment with everyday troubles, but rather the existential sorrow about a woman's lot that never goes away, not even at the happiest of moments.

In a wonderful interview with Flavorwire, Helen Oyeyemi recommends Kseniya Melnik's SNOW IN MAY!
What have you been reading as of late? Anything great you’d suggest?
I just finished Kseniya Melnik’s Snow in May, and I recommend it; it’ll have you going around muttering: “brutal age, rough manner, nyet romantismy.”
Read the whole interview HERE and check out SNOW IN MAY which comes out May 13, 2014!
