Less of a full fic, more of a rough sketch of a concept.

Been thinking about a modern au where Tex & Krolia never married. They come to a point when Keith is 7 where their romantic relationship has come to its natural end but they're still best friends and want to raise Keith together so the farthest Tex moves is a different bedroom.

A few months later he starts dating the divorced mom of an 11yo boy at the same time as Krolia goes on a business trip where she meets a young widow with a 6yo daughter.

Tex & Krolia refuse to leave Keith behind to bounce between them, so they stay in the house, moving their new partners in with them. It's a bit of an adjustment, but the kids all get along and are acting like siblings in no time.

These are the relationships Tex & Krolia know will last, and a few months before their double wedding, they and their fiancees sit down with a lawyer, formally adopting each other's kids and signing co-parenting agreements. Shiro, Keith, and Romelle do not understand why they need to have some paper telling them they're siblings when it's something they already know.

Years later, when Lance tries to warn Keith about his own family, Keith just remind him that he grew up with two siblings and four parents, how bad could it be?

I’ve had this idea for awhile for an animatic with the song “The Way I Do” from the musical, “Starship” (By Starkid Productions)...

It’ll be Krolia and Texas Kogane as Mega-girl and Tootsie Noodles. And then Keith as Bug and Lance as February.

Anyway, their characters match very well, at least with this specific song. I was going to try and make it myself but hey, I don’t mind if someone does it in my place, as long as I’m given some sort of credit for the idea.

Baby’s first words

Keef!!! Papa!! Up up!!" You laughed as your son was pestering his dad, who was trying to close an alliance deal with a planet in the galaxy over. Tex, named after his grandfather, Keith's dad, had just turned three years old and he was absolutely enamoured by his father. He followed him everywhere, you even found him trying on his Keith's Admiral uniform blazer, which you took a picture of that Keith now keeps in his credit card pouch. Physically, Tex looks alot like you, but he inherited his daddy's doe-like violet eyes. You've also discovered his eyes have a retroreflector, like a cat, which nearly cause you to body slam your own child when you woke up and he was standing right next to you with glowing eyes. Keith didn't believe you until he woke up with his son sittting on his chest looking down on him and the almighty scream your 28 year old husband let out still makes you laugh if you think about it too long. His skin is more similar to yours, but in certain light it has a very slight purple tint. He has extremely long, thick eyelashes, and has unfortunately perfected his "puppy eyes" which Keith is all but immune too. He's also incredibly clever, and picked up that his daddy's name wasn't actually 'daddy' or 'papa'. You think he heard Lance or Krolia say his name and now whenever Tex wants something he'll call his daddy by his name, except, he can't actually say it, so it comes out 'Keef' and it honestly makes your heart soar.

Currently, he was in Keith's arms, poking at his cheeks while Keith was trying to keep a straight face and continue the call. Out of all the things that made you love your husband so wholly, the fact he would never put work before his family was always the thing that made you fall in love with him time and time again. He would never say excuses for being late, and if Tex was pestering him in the middle of a call, he would always see if he was okay, and usually let him stay during the call, holding him or just letting him play quietly on the floor.

You remember when you discovered you were pregnant, and when you told Keith.

He had been so excited, finally glad to have a chance to give someone the childhood he never had. He had also been terrified. He was so incredibly worried that he wouldn't live up to expectations and he would fail his child, but you had been quick to dispel that, telling him you knew how much of a good man he was, and how much he loved you and his child already. He had even asked you if you could wait, until Tex was old enough, so that we could attend your wedding as a ring bearer and be involved. You guys had yet to be married, engaged for nearly four years, and you thought it was perfect. Of course, everything had it's wonky bits, like when Tex caught whooping cough shortly after he was born and you and Keith were distraught for weeks after. He has been fine, the wonder of Galra/Alien medication but it was a taxing time. During that, you and Keith hadn't had the time to speak for a while, and once you were cleared to take Tex home, you nearly collapsed from stress. He immediately made you go to sleep, and promised he would join you once he put Tex down for a nap. You woke in the middle of the night, and Keith hadn't been there, which made you incredibly sad because after everything you just missed him. You had wandered into the sitting room, and saw Keith asleep on the couch, a book of fairytales from your childhood open on his chest. The cot for the baby was pushed right up next to it, and the side was off so he could keep an eye on his son. The memory, though painful, always made you feel so warm and loved, and you knew without any doubt that Keith would always be there, and be an amazing dad.

Telling Krolia you were pregnant had been a whole different story. She'd be overjoyed, of course but the Galra have a ton of different traditions when it comes to pregnancies. Once you'd smoothed out that no, you weren't going to give birth in 6 weeks, and no humans can't detect the gender of a baby by scent, it went fairly smoothly. You had been a bit scared that Tex might be a little frightened of the Galra, especially the Blade members, as they towered over you all at 8ft tall, with their ears and deep fur and claws. But, Tex was absolutely fine with them. He kept on calling Thace "Kitty!! Fluffy Kitty!!" Which made Keith laugh so hard he'd have to leave the room, and now whenever Keith is on call with Blade business, Tex makes grabby hands at the holo-screen and giggles "Kitty!! Hello big kitty!!!" Which, in the middle of genuine serious meetings, isn't the most formal but it makes everyone chuckle, and does infact relieve some of the tension in the room, and usually when Keith is stressed about new diplomatic agreements, you'll just strategically place Tex into the room with him, so he'll help ease the air of the call. It's hard to argue against inter-planitary allegiances or the value/ trustworthyness (since some planets are still wary of the galra) of the Marmora group when theres a tiny baby in the arms of what is essentially to him a very big teddy bear. You and Keith hadn't yet told him his heritage, although he was aware the Krolia was his grandmother, you doubt he was old enough to realise what that actually meant yet. Still, for now, you had all you could have hoped for.

After the war with the galra empire ended Krolia finally had the opportunity to permanently settle down on Earth after being reunited with Tex, Keith's father. She never thought that she'd be reunited with her human mate, thankfully she had been wrong and he was still alive when she returned to Earth. Tex honestly wasn't expecting Krolia to come back since when she left it sounded like she'd never return, thankfully he was wrong too; he'd managed to avoid being captured when Sendak invaded Earth by becoming one of the freedom fighters who helped at the Garrison. They were reunited as soon as Krolia, Kolivan and the Blades arrived on Earth shortly after the battle against the giant mech was finished; Keith was in the medical ward when they actually reunited with each other, so Kolivan went to check on the other paladins so they could have their privacy.

Their reunion was an emotional one; they'd been separated for over twenty years which meant they had a lot of lost time to make up for, and they really made it up that night when they were alone together in the room Tex had been given. It was only a few weeks later that Krolia became pregnant again, although it was to be expected considering how much they'd made up for lost time together whenever they had alone time. So now, a few years later on Mother's Day, (Y/n) wanted to surprise her mom with breakfast in bed; she was only five years old, so Keith helped her since he was visiting the newly built cabin with Acxa and Kosmo. Keith enjoyed having a little sister since he'd been an only child growing up; he originally wanted a big brother, but Shiro filled that role after they met several years prior and when his mom told him she was pregnant he couldn't help but feel excited in a way he'd never felt before. He didn't mind waking up early to help (Y/n) make breakfast for their mom while Acxa and Kosmo slept in the guest bedroom, although they had to be quiet so that they wouldn't accidentally wake anyone up.

"Are they ready?" (Y/n) asked her big brother with curiosity while he scrambled some eggs on the stove, the young girl standing on a step-stool.

"Almost. Can you get the tray ready?" Keith answered, knowing his younger sister could get the tray ready on her own, all he had to do was ask her first.

"Okay!" (Y/n) replied gleefully, quickly getting off of the step-stool before she went to get the tray ready, taking the small piece of furniture with her to the table.

Keith smiled as he kept an eye on the eggs; he was used to having a younger sister by that point and he couldn’t have asked for a better one than (Y/n). In the meantime, (Y/n) put a napkin on the tray and carefully poured a glass of orange juice since everything she needed was already on the table. For a five year old, (Y/n) was fairly good at pouring juice into a glass all on her own, thankfully the bottle wasn't too big nor was it too full. Once the eggs were done Keith turned the stove off and put the scrambled eggs on a plate along with the bacon and put the plate on the tray, thereby completing the delicious breakfast. It was the first year that Keith had the help of (Y/n) to surprise their mom on Mother's Day and it was honestly a lot of fun to spend some quality time with his younger sibling.

"Do you have the card?" Keith asked (Y/n) as he carefully picked the tray up off of the table, looking down at his little sister.

"Uh huh." (Y/n) replied, picking up the Mother's Day card she and Keith made together during the previous evening.

Keith smiled as he let (Y/n) go first so that she could open their parents' bedroom for him once they made it upstairs, both siblings being as quiet as possible. He balanced the tray so that the orange juice wouldn't spill, although carrying a tray of food was a lot harder than it looked. Once (Y/n) and Keith arrived at their parents' bedroom she quietly opened the door, walked across their room and climbed up onto their bed, even though it was a little difficult for her since she couldn't just leap on like she normally did. Keith followed (Y/n) quietly, standing at the foot of the bed once she was sitting in between their parents' feet like she did during the previous Christmas morning. The young man was thankful that they hadn’t accidentally woken their parents up; their mom was a very light sleeper, so it was a miracle she didn't hear them making breakfast downstairs.

"Mommy, wake up." (Y/n) said after she looked back and saw her big brother standing behind her, although she didn't speak too loudly.

While Tex and Krolia slept they felt a strange weight on the bed, almost like Christmas morning during the previous year, but they weren't entirely sure if someone was sitting on their bed or not since they were sleeping. Tex was fast asleep and continued to sleep, but Krolia woke up when she heard her daughter's voice and smelled something delicious. She rubbed her eyes and sat up slightly as she was met with the sight of (Y/n) and Keith; (Y/n) was sitting on the bed while Keith stood behind her, both of them holding something. It took a moment for the galran woman to wake up a little more, she was still tired after the previous day, although once she rubbed the sleep from her eyes she turned her bedside lamp on and saw the tray of food Keith was holding and noticed (Y/n) holding a homemade card. She certainly wasn't expecting to be woken up so early, especially by both of her children who looked excited.

"Happy Mother's Day, mommy." (Y/n) spoke cheerfully, scooting closer to her mom and giving the card to her.

"(Y/n) and I made you a card and breakfast in bed for you. Happy Mother's Day." Keith added while walking over to the side of the bed and placing the tray of food over his mom's lap, a slight smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.

"All this is for me? Thank you, my kits." Krolia responded with a sentimental tone, smiling after she took the card from (Y/n) and opened it.

Keith sat on the edge of the bed as Krolia read the card, smiling when she got all teary eyed as she read what he wrote; he wasn't good at writing sappy things, but based on their mother's reaction he succeeded. While Krolia wiped her tears of happiness away Tex smelled something delicious and slowly woke up as well. He sat up a little and yawned, causing the other three people in the room to turn their attention towards him. It took the older man a few moments to register what was going on but then he remembered what holiday it was; Mother's Day, the day that celebrated all moms and ever since his lover and oldest child came home they were able to officially celebrate it. He unfortunately didn't have a mother since he'd aged out of the foster care system, although he had his wife and she was the mother of their children, so he would help celebrate it later. Krolia leaned over and gave Tex a quick good morning kiss on the cheek, a loving smile spread across her lips.

"Is it Mother's Day already?" Tex asked his wife and kids groggily, still feeling tired since he hadn't had his morning coffee yet.

"It sure is, daddy." (Y/n) confirmed with excitement, beaming at her father with pure joy.

Krolia set the card down on her nightstand and started eating the breakfast Keith and (Y/n) made for her, letting Tex have a little until he and everyone else ate breakfast a little later that morning. (Y/n) was super happy that her mom liked the card and the breakfast in bed Keith helped her make, it made waking up early worth it. Later on that evening Tex was going to make a special dinner, but he wanted that to be a surprise; Keith, (Y/n) and Acxa already agreed to take Krolia outside later to keep her distracted so he would have enough time to cook and prepare everything. Keith and Acxa were looking into adopting a few kids in the near future; Keith couldn't wait to help his own kids surprise Acxa for Mother's Day someday, although it would be for another couple of years before they actually adopted. Krolia felt loved as she sat in bed eating breakfast with her husband and two children surrounding her, there was no other place in the universe she'd rather be.

This fic is a fan-interpretive extension of the very brief scene from Razor's Edge (S6,E2) of Voltron, in which we see Krolia discovering the death of Keith's father, while Keith sleeps beside her. As an avid Krolia enthusiast, what else would I do but torture her, by delving deeper into the processes I imagine she would go through upon learning that returning to her lover is no longer an option?
