January 2025
Across the realms, celestial dancers known as apsaras are revered for their beauty, allure, and enchanting magic.
But Meneka knows that is not all they are. They are weapons – warriors – seducing their targets for Lord Indra, the king of heaven, for his political gain.
When a mortal’s growing powers threaten Lord Indra’s supremacy, Meneka seizes a rare opportunity and strikes a deal. If she can seduce this dangerous man, Indra will grant her what she most desires: her freedom.
But upon meeting the mortal Kaushika, Meneka finds herself captivated, despite his power threatening to destroy everything she’s ever known. Can she overthrow the man who is, little by little, stealing her heart, or is he seducing her instead and to what end?
As war looms in the skies, Meneka must choose between her duty to protect her home, and the man who is showing her what love can truly mean.

The Surviving Sky - Kritika H. Rao
The premises this novel sets are so astonishing and wonderful. The worldbuilding, the themes of consciousness and its definition, influenced by Hinduism; marital problems in a couple married for over a decade. This sounded like a pageturner, but then the execution happened: 1.) endless repetitions of: anger, the dominance and superior "worth" of architects, classism 2.) the dominant misogyny: childbirth as the sole defining element of the female role, architect or not 3.) the toxic relationship between the MC's which, frankly, is more abuse than "tempestual" 4.) the clear identification of problems (marital, engineering, societal) and the consequent avoidance of solving them 5.) the clear message of apologizing to an abuser by offering sex and subsequent pregnancy; see 2.) 6.) the complete dismantling of the magic system come the 65% mark: from here on out we have some meta-mysticism based on speculation I have the second book - which I won't read after this disaster, but dude, this will teach me to never buy into a series like this again.

High above a jungle-planet float the last refuges of humanity—plant-made civilizations held together by tradition, technology, and arcane science. In these living cities, architects are revered above anyone else. If not for their ability to psychically manipulate the architecture, the cities would plunge into the devastating earthrage storms below. Charismatic, powerful, mystical, Iravan is one such architect. In his city, his word is nearly law. His abilities are his identity, but to Ahilya, his wife, they are a way for survival to be reliant on the privileged few. Like most others, she cannot manipulate the plants. And she desperately seeks change. Their marriage is already thorny—then Iravan is accused of pushing his abilities to forbidden limits. He needs Ahilya to help clear his name; she needs him to tip the balance of rule in their society. As their paths become increasingly intertwined, deadly truths emerge, challenging everything each of them believes. And as the earthrages become longer, and their floating city begins to plummet, Iravan and Ahilya's discoveries might destroy their marriage, their culture, and their entire civilization.

1, 3, 11 for book mrme
How many books did you read this year?
Uhh 97. That is however counting graphic novels and some novellas and poetry and such. (9 books of poetry, 24 graphic novels by my count just now, harder to determine what exactly is a novella or otherwise shorter than a 'full length book').
2. What were your top five books of the year?
oh god
Oh right, #1 is easy, The Devourers by Indra Das. I've simultaneously been gushing about it all year and failing to describe it in any way; one thing I will say is, I didn't read it when it came out bc I heard from the grapevine a lot about it REQUIRING A STRONG STOMACH and being SO VERY DARK and such and ummm hm, was it though? Anyway. It walks this very specific line whereby the monsters are truly monstrous and yet not dehumanized, in a way that I'm not sure I've seen anything else do. Very good. Only book that could possibly pull off its last sentence.
Past this #1 slot, though, I start running into a lot of things I liked for very different reasons. Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson is certainly a contender, but, it's Sanderson, you already know whether you're interested or not. (99% chance I become a Mishram stan by the end of the next book, yk, 6 years from now or whenever.)
The almost-paired books of The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo and The Pomegranate Gate by Ariel Kaplan (which I indeed read very close to each other!) are also both contenders. Both are fantasy about Jewish characters in the Spanish Inquisition; they diverge dramatically past that point in almost every way, which only makes them feel more in conversation with each other. The Familiar makes classic YA tropes work as they never have before thanks to the presence of the very real constant threat and dread of being found out by the Inquisition; Pomegranate Gate somehow ends up channeling Kingdom Hearts.
The West Passage by Jared Pechaček was very good. The Naming Song by Jedediah Barry is the only thing I've encountered that's ever truly pulled off word-based magic; it does this by effectively selling its setting as having truly, wildly different metaphysics to the world we live in now. (Which is also why I'm having it share a paragraph with The West Passage, really.)
Kritika H. Rao's Rages Trilogy, currently consisting of its first two books, The Surviving Sky and The Unrelenting Earth is very good so far, I eagerly await the conclusion.
There's also some far-from-my-usual-genre stuff but there's a whole different question on this meme for that, so...
3. What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?
[redacted], but other than that how can I not say Beowulf, which I read in two translations simultaneously and quite liked. (I'm not sure it is, say, 'my favorite of books released earlier than this year,' but it's so much earlier than any other contender that it kind of has to win, right,)

Most anticipated 2024 books!
I am anticipating a lot of books. To keep track of them, I made a 2024 tbr shelf. It has 123 books. I certainly won't be reading all 123, but since I can sort the list by release date it helps me keep track of new releases. Unfortunately, 123 is so many that half of them I don't even remember adding them or what they're about, so I decided to boil it down to 10 most anticipated new books and 10 sequels.

Voyage of the Damned - Frances White - Jan 18

Rating: 3.5/5
Book Blurb:
“Sensual and thought-provoking, a romantic fantasy unlike any other.” — Shannon Chakraborty
“Utterly intoxicating . . . whisking you off to a dreamlike world where every corner glitters with magic, and the sensual and the sacred collide.” — Thea Guanzon
Seduction is her weapon. Love is her destiny.
Kritika H. Rao weaves a luscious, exhilarating fantasy inspired by one of the most famous romances in Hindu mythology— the story of a celestial dancer tasked with seducing a human sage, but when she finds herself falling for her mark, she will be forced to choose between loyalties and being true to herself.
Across the mortal and immortal realms, celestial dancers known as apsaras are revered for their beauty, allure, and enchanting magic. But Meneka knows that is not all they are. Trained as a weapon—a warrior—Meneka despises leaving each of her marks in thrall to her potent illusions. With every seduction Lord Indra, king of heaven, demands of her for his political gain, she craves her freedom more and more.
When a mortal sage’s growing powers threaten Indra’s supremacy in his own realm, Meneka seizes a rare opportunity. She strikes a deal—if she can seduce this dangerous man, Indra will allow her to forgo future missions. But upon meeting the sage, Kaushika, Meneka finds herself captivated by his energy, ignited by his empathy and passion, even though he challenges everything she’s ever known. Can she overthrow the man who is—little by little—stealing her heart, or is Kaushika seducing her instead? As war looms in the skies, Meneka must choose between her duty to protect her home, and the sage who is showing her what true love can mean.
Romantic, spellbinding, and empowering, The Legend of Meneka breathes new life into Hindu mythology to weave a lustrous tale of a woman discovering the cosmic power within herself. Perfect for readers of Daughter of the Moon Goddess, Kaikeyi, and Circe, this first book in the Divine Dancers duology is a completely unputdownable adventure for lovers of romantasy and myth retellings.
Review:
Inspired by the famous Hindu mythology romance story between a celestial dancer named Meneka and her task to seduce a human sage named Kaushika only to find herself torn between her devotion to her god and her heart. Asparas are celestial dancers known for their beauty, allure, and magic. They are all trained as weapons and warriors and forced to seduce and destroy marks for her Lord Indra, the king of heaven. Meneka is tired of what she does and the state she leaves her marks in, all she wants is to be freed and to stop being forced to do the bidding of Lord Indra for his political gain. When Meneka asks for her freedom to be with another woman she loves Indra is furious and nearly punishes her but she negotiates instead: if she can seduce the mortal sage who is growing in power that threatens Indra he'll give her her freedom. The only thing Meneka knows about mortal sage is that his name is Kaushika and that he has defeated two of her sisters and turned them into stone and cursed them... and that he is bent on a mission to destroy Indra. Meneka joins Kaushika's hermitage but finds her drawn in by him and rather than seducing him she finds herself being seduced as well. Meneka has never fallen for a mark but with a war looming and Meneka's loyalties being pulled in either directions... where will her heart go and how can she stop the war? This one was definitely an interesting read as I was not familiar with this mythology/story before hand and learning about it was really fun. The story itself was unique for sure and I do think that it's a fun read for fantasy romance/mythology romance lovers. The romance was a sort of slow burn/insta-lust with some spice and then a sort of "enemies to lovers to enemies to lovers again" kind of vibe. Its the first book in the duology and I am curious how the second book ends. The kind of funny aspect of this book was how heavy handed on the "love is the answer to everything" thing it had going on, I mean yeah sure, but also ??? Overall, I do think that fantasy romance readers will have fun with this and should add it to their tbr.

New Books 2025 ₍ ᐢ.ˬ.ᐢ₎˚୨୧
(That I've found so far)˗ˏˋ ♡ ˎˊ˗
I'm a little unsure about Gate to Kagoshima. I've seen the blue cover in the shops before, I know the publishers are different now, but I don't know the reason why as of yet. And the same for My Funny Demon Valentine, I know that was released digitally, but I'm unsure about physically (in the past I mean).
My Funny Demon Valentine˗ˏˋ ♡ ˎˊ˗
Romance, Paranormals, Demons
Asmodeus, Prince of Hell, just wants to make music. Jazz, specifically. Unfortunately, he’s a demon. And he’s supposed to be evil.
Clearly, for Ash, a career as a musician isn’t exactly an option. Plus, he’s cursed.Sick of playing by the rules, Ash and his three brothers escape Hell in search of freedom on Earth. But it’s harder than they thought to keep their enemies off their tail . . .
The four rogues quickly become the Underworld’s Most Wanted, and if they’re caught, the consequences will be dire. Yet everything changes for Ash when he meets a beautiful violinist who can see through his curse. It must be too good to be true, but, no matter the risk, he has to have her.
Evangeline Gregory is just your average human. She works at a jazz bar, plays gigs on weekends . . . and, apparently, hallucinates demons.
At least that’s what Eva tells herself when, moments after she meets the man of her dreams, she sees him shift into a 7-foot-tall monster. Not believing her own eyes, Eva decides to investigate and soon finds herself caught in the middle of a supernatural clusterf**k of epic proportions. But Ash isn’t the only one keeping secrets, and the search for answers reveals a shocking truth that will change the course of her life forever. Or maybe just doom it. Eva and Ash will learn the path to love can be complete Hell.
Gate to Kagoshima˗ˏˋ ♡ ˎˊ˗
Japan, Historical, Romance, Time Travel
They lay… Her heart torn to ribbons. How would she ever let him go now? 2005: While researching her Japanese ancestors, Isla travels from Scotland to Kagoshima. There, a vicious typhoon and a strange white gate in a deserted shrine tumbles Isla back to 1877 and the dawn of the Satsuma Rebellion, the conflict that heralded the end of the samurai. Keiichirō Maeda, a samurai with eyes that promise the world, introduces Isla to a way of life only previously encountered in books, and Isla begins to wonder if she has found her true home. But as the samurai muster against what she knows will be a futile battle and the end of everything they hold dear, Isla is increasingly anxious. Should she tell the man she now loves what history has taught will happen to the samurai, or should she let Keiichirō die the glorious death he so believes in, proud to the end that he remained a faithful warrior? And if that does happen, can Isla ever find her way back to her modern-day life in the Highlands? Only time can tell…
The Legend of Meneka˗ˏˋ ♡ ˎˊ˗
Romance, Mythology, Fiction, Retelling
In this sweeping crossover of romantic fantasy and Hindu mythology, acclaimed author Kritika H. The The End of the World There is a Pond˗ˏˋ ♡ ˎˊ˗
Poetry
A stunning debut volume infused with apocalyptic overload, beginnings and endings, and all the ways we betray ourselves.
At the End of the World There Is a Pond is a book about aftermaths. Each poem comes in the wake of a deep rupture—the rupture of mental illness and addiction, of migration and displacement, of violence, familial conflict, and ecological catastrophe. The speakers of these poems engage with despair and playfulness in equal measure, always allowing humor, irony, and the exuberance of the natural world to bend darkness toward something like hope.
Again and again, Steven Duong’s writing excavates the unnatural conditions of the seemingly natural the betta fish trapped in its mason jar, the forest choked by invasive kudzu, the elephant wounded in a landmine blast. Ultimately, At the End of the World There Is a Pond articulates an impossible How can we reconcile a deep love for the world in all its buzzing, wriggling aliveness with an equally deep self-destructive desire to leave it behind?
The Lotus Shoes˗ˏˋ ♡ ˎˊ˗
Historical, China, Women's Fiction
An astonishing story set in 1800s China. Little Flower is sold into slavery, and Linjing into marriage . . .
As a child, Little Flower is sold to Linjing's wealthy family to become a muizai. In a fit of childish jealousy over her new handmaiden's ladylike bound feet and talent for embroidery, Linjing ensures Little Flower can never leave her to ascend in society.
Despite their starkly different places in the Fong household, over the years the two girls must work together to secure both their futures through Linjing's marriage. As the two grow up, they are by turns bitter rivals and tentative friends.
Until scandal strikes the family, and Linjing and Little Flower's lives are unexpectedly thrown into chaos. Linjing's fall from grace could be an opportunity for Little Flower - but will their intertwined fates lead to triumph, or tragedy for them both?
Lies on the Serpents Tongue˗ˏˋ ♡ ˎˊ˗
Mystery, Gothic, Thriller, Horror
A beautifully dark YA set in Appalachia tinged with magic, mystery, murder, and romance. For fans of House of Hollow and Wilder Girls! As Caball Hollow slowly recovers after a tumultuous summer, the James family must also come to terms with their own newly revealed secrets.        18-year-old Rowan James has spent her whole life harboring unpleasant truths—that’s what happens when you can smell people’s lies—and building walls around herself to block them out. Like her younger sister, Linden, who can taste the feelings of others, Rowan has long resented her gift, which has taught her that everyone lies and no one is who they seem to be. So when her old nemesis, Hadrian Fitch, the biggest liar of them all, shows up on her front porch—bloodied, broken, and asking for help only she can give—her first instinct is distrust. But something new is stalking the Forest that surrounds Caball Hollow.       Now things are disappearing. At first, it’s small stuff—like letters, photos, and keys. But then, Rowan notices people around her are losing their memories. And when the body of a neighbor is found in the middle of town, Rowan knows there’s a link between this death and all the events disturbing the Hollow. Can she find what—or who—the link is before it takes another life?
Where Did You Go?˗ˏˋ ♡ ˎˊ˗
Fae, Dark Fantasy, Romance
Trapped in the In-Between, Caly, Mendax, and Aurelius are fighting for their lives—they just don't know whose.
Caly's bond to Mendax from their bonding ceremony and her mortality being tied to Aurelius's from when he saved her life mean the three of them have tangled their life forces together. Caly can't let another one of her loved ones die, but she also needs to answer the summons so she can finally meet her father. Then, perhaps, she can be sent to the Elysian Fields to be with her mother and sister.
