Manhattan, Upper West Side, 1957. Against the backdrop of the decaying tenements in the San Juan Hill neighbourhood and the constant threat of the wrecking ball, two warring gangs--tough Riff's Jets and swaggering Bernardo's Puerto Rican Sharks--fight for supremacy. Now, with a once-and-for-all, winner-takes-all rumble on the cards, an unexpected whirlwind romance at the high-school dance between former Jet brawler Tony and Bernardo's delicate little sister María sets the stage for an all-out turf war. But what's a gang without its territory? Above all, when the future is uncertain, what's hope without love?
youtube
Directed by Academy Award® winner Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award® winner Tony Kushner, “West Side Story” tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. This reimagining of the beloved musical stars Ansel Elgort (Tony); Rachel Zegler (María); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino); Ana Isabelle (Rosalía); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke); and Rita Moreno (as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works). Moreno – one of only three artists to be honored with Academy®, Emmy®, GRAMMY®, Tony® and Peabody Awards – also serves as one of the film’s executive producers. Bringing together the best of both Broadway and Hollywood, the film’s creative team includes Kushner, who also serves as an executive producer; Tony Award® winner Justin Peck, who choreographed the musical numbers in the film; renowned Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor and GRAMMY Award® winner Gustavo Dudamel, who helmed the recording of the iconic score; Academy Award®-nominated composer and conductor David Newman (“Anastasia”), who arranged the score; Tony Award®-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (“Fun Home,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie”), who supervised the cast on vocals; and Grammy®-nominated music supervisor Matt Sullivan (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Chicago”), who served as executive music producer for the film. The film is produced by Spielberg, Academy Award®-nominated producer Kristie Macosko Krieger and Tony Award®-winning producer Kevin McCollum. “West Side Story” has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway show, with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins.

FROM Season 1 Episode 2: DEEP DIVE and Reaction
Tumblr media
Thank you thank you thank you. If you’re here then that means that you’ve successfully taken the FROM Challenge. I’m your host, Anthony, and I will do my best to be your guide in this “IDK WTF is going on show” FROM. We are here to break down and recap FROM Season 1 Episode 2 of this incredible show and provide a deep dive and close analysis of all of the clues and symbolism in the show to get a better understanding of what is happening. We're picking right up where we left off last week with Jim, Kristi, and Sheriff Boyd stuck in an RV overnight with the people creature monsters closing in on them. This week's episode is titled “The Way Things Are Now” which is a tough pill to swallow as our family struggles to comprehend just how much their world has changed.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MinIGkJoBtQ FROM Season 1 Episode 2 The phrase "the way things are now" is a common expression used to describe the current state or condition of things. It is a general observation about the present circumstances or situation. The phrase itself does not have a specific origin, as it is a natural way of referring to the current state of affairs. There are various instances where similar phrases or concepts are used like in the dystopian novel "1984" by George Orwell, the phrase "the way things are now" could be related to the oppressive and controlled society depicted in the book. Similarly, in the TV series "The Handmaid's Tale," based on Margaret Atwood's novel, the phrase could be associated with the oppressive regime and the bleak reality faced by the characters. In FROM it feels like it's just a way to highlight the dark and mysterious reality that people find themselves in when getting stuck in this town. Synopsis: FROM unravels the mystery of a nightmarish town in middle America that traps all those who enter. As the unwilling residents fight to keep a sense of normalcy and search for a way out, they must also survive the threats of the surrounding forest; including the terrifying creatures that come out when the sun goes down. The series stars Harold Perrineau (Lost) leading an ensemble cast that includes Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace, The Affair), Eion Bailey (Band of Brothers, Once Upon a Time), Hannah Cheramy (Under Wraps, Van Helsing), Simon Webster (Strays), Ricky He (The Good Doctor), Chloe Van Landschoot (Charity, Skin), Corteon Moore (Utopia Falls), Pegah Ghafoori (The Perfect Wedding), David Alpay (Castle Rock), Elizabeth Saunders (Clarice), Elizabeth Moy and Avery Konrad (Honor Society). New series regulars joining Season 2 include Scott McCord (East of Middle West), Nathan D. Simmons (Diggstown, This Hour Has 22 Minutes), Kaelen Ohm (Hit & Run, Eumenides Falls), Angela Moore (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Maid), AJ Simmons (Reacher) and Deborah Grover (My Next Door Nightmare, Jann). Kristy Moreno's "Matter of Survival."
Currently on view at Thinkspace Projects in Los Angeles, California is artist Kristy Moreno's solo exhibition, "Matter of Survival."
"Matter of Survival" focuses on the imagined personas of radicalized future ancestors. Moreno's hand crafted ceramic forms are of fictional characters often resembling feminine personalities paused in space and time. Moreno examines the essence of these future communities through the use of body languages and attitudes to further explore themes of rage, empathy and curiosity.
“Individualizing these characters grants me the freedom to be curious about the influences they might have inherited from past societies, as I try to observe how the past often shapes future worlds" Moreno explains. "I’d like to imagine that these future ancestors survived by decolonizing their way out of patriarchal systems. They are no longer conditioned to believe that they have to live in someone else’s reality that is deemed worthy of living.”

2021
Steven Spielberg directs a remake of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical West Side Story (directed by Robert Wise in 1961).
Inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the story tells of two young lovers (Tony and Maria) from opposing cultural sides in 1950s New York.
Screenplay author Tony Kushner promises a film that will turn back to the original 1957 stage version and focus on “gritty” life in parts of New York City in the late 1950s.
Tony is played by Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver, 2017). For the role of Maria, 17-year-old Rachel Zegler is chosen - it’s her first film part. Other cast members are Ariana DeBose as Anita, David Alvarez as Bernardo and Josh Andrés Rivera als Chino.
Rita Moreno (she played Anita in the original film) portrays Valentina and is also executive producing.
Director Steven Spielberg comments his casting decisions:
“When we began this process a year ago, we announced that we would cast the roles of Maria, Anita, Bernardo, Chino and the Sharks with Latina and Latino actors. I’m so happy that we’ve assembled a cast that reflects the astonishing depth of talent in America’s multifaceted Hispanic community. I am in awe of the sheer force of the talent of these young performers, and I believe they’ll bring a new and electrifying energy to a magnificent musical that’s more relevant than ever.”
Spielberg joins forces with producers Kristie Macosko Krieger and Kevin McCollum, Broadway producer of the Tony Award-winning musicals Rent, In the Heights and Avenue Q and choreographer Justin Peck.
David Newman - Thomas Newman's brother - will arrange and conduct the music by composer Leonard Bernstein. He will collaborate with musical composer and texter Stephen Sondheim.
Principal photography starts in Summer 2019.
A first publicity photo is published on June 17, depicting Maria (Rachel Zegler), Tony (Ansel Elgort), The Jets (left) and The Sharks (right).

Spielberg’s ambitions to direct a film musical became visible in the dance choreography of 1941 and the brilliant musical intro of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
On March 20, 2020, 20th Century Fox (the film’s financing and distributing studio) is purchased by Walt Disney Studios and renamed 20th Century Studios in 2020.
The original release date in U.S. theaters is December 18, 2020 - Steven Spielberg's birthday. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. release is pushed back to Dec. 10, 2021 - 60 years after the premiere of the original 1961 film.
On April 25, 2021, to coincide with the Oscars, when Rita Moreno presents the award for Best Picture, the first trailer is released.
The film receives almost universal acclaim. Reviews highlight that Spielberg has indeed succeeded in taking a fresh look at the musical classic that not only does justice to its predecessor, but surpasses it in various places.
Nevertheless, the film disappoints at the box office (partly due to the pandemic). With production costs of about $100 million, the film grosses only about $76 million worldwide, leaving Walt Disney Studios with a hefty loss. Spielberg's The BFG (2016), another Walt Disney Studios production, also failed to turn out a profit, with production costs of $140 million and high marketing expenses (worldwide box office receipts: about $199 million).
At the Golden Globe Awards, West Side Story wins in three categories:
Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
Best Actress, Musical or Comedy for Rachel Zegler
Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose.
Steven Spielberg is being nominated as Best Director.
At the Academy Awards, the film is nominated in seven categories:
Best Picture
Best Director
Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose
Best Cinematography
Best Production Design
Best Costume Design
Best Sound.
