The Grandfather Clock

I meant to have this ready for @kristanna-days Kristanna Halloween Days - Haunted Arendelle, but here's an excerpt. Hopefully, I'll get the rest done by the end of the month.

Anna sat up suddenly and nervously scanned the room.  It was hard to catch her breath, and it was so cold from the sweat on her chest and back.  How did Hans sleep through that?

She wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep, especially since Hans was holding tight to her pillow.  

Anna tip-toed to the living room, where Honeymaren’s team was sleeping, close to the fire that was somehow still roaring.  She hoped to find Elsa awake, but they were all sleeping soundly, curled tightly into their sleeping bags.  So Anna clutched her arms and tip-toed to the kitchen, which was always the warmest room in the house.

She was in a bit of a daze, and it didn’t occur to her to wonder why the fire was already going.  She filled the kettle with water and set it on the stove, and positioned herself in front of the kettle to watch.  She needed to see the spout pop open when the kettle sang, so she knew she wasn’t dreaming about the cuckoo clock.

“Hmhmm,” a deep voice came from behind her, along with the crinkle of a newspaper folding.

Anna turned, startled, her heart leaping out of her chest as she nearly backed into the stove.  Then she relaxed as the man took hold of her hand.

“I’m sorry.  I didn’t know you’d be so jumpy,” he said with just a hint of judgement.

His eyes were friendlier, though, and more concerned than the last time she’d seen them, which was to say, just barely.

He sat her down, heart rate still falling, and the chills took over from being so far from the fire. Then he took the kettle off just as it was about to sing.

He stirred in a spoonful of instant coffee and set it on the table in front of Anna.  It was strong and bitter, and Anna struggled to get it down, but she gladly sipped at it anyway as it filled her belly with more warmth and comfort than Elsa’s tea even gave her.

“You don’t remember me, do you?” he asked as he sat down at the table in front of her.

He stretched his legs out uncomfortably, waiting for her answer, but she didn’t know what to say.

“I’m Bulda’s son.”

Anna searched her memories.  “My… nanny?” 

She pushed her hair behind my ear and found her way to his eyes.  There was no jest there, no bullshit.  

He nodded his head, and looked down at his coffee mug.  She couldn’t tell if his cheeks were red from embarrassment or the warm drink set against the cold exterior.

She tilted her head to consider him.  “I do remember you.”

He lifted his eyebrows and scanned her face as if to discern whether she was just saying that.

“Christopher, right?”

“Kristoff,” he says, sounding a little offended, though not disappointed.

“I’m sorry,” she said, her face contorting in tension.  “I don’t really remember that much from back then.”

His expression softened and he took a sip.  After a loud gulp, he shrugged his shoulders.  “Probably for the best.”

“What do you mean?  Why?”  She leaned forward, eager to know what he knew.

He shifted his eyes and his legs away from her, and wiped at his nose.  “Well, you were so young.  And bratty.”

“What?” she asked indignantly, and pointed her finger at him in the air.

“Well, you haven’t changed much,” he said casually, and took another sip.

She frowned, but only so he wouldn’t know how funny he was, then she changed the subject very subtly.  “So, how’s Bulda?”

“Passed away,” he said flatly, then took another sip.

“Oh, I’m so sorry!” she said, and covered his hand with hers.

He jerked his hand back, and said, “Yeah, well, it was a long time ago.”  Then he looked away and folded his arms.

Anna stared at his face, searching for some clue to understand him better.  She had a sinking feeling that her parents were also killed ‘a long time ago.’

“So, then you believe me?” she asked, knowing she had as good a chance of him not believing as believing.

He roughed up his hair and sighed into hands, covering his whole face.  “I was there, Anna.”

Anna’s face hurt from confusion, not knowing which muscles to contract because they didn’t know which feeling to reflect.  Then she froze, and more chills crept up her spine all the way to her cheeks when she realized that Bulda had been there, too.

Kristoff brushed his hair back again, and observed disapprovingly, “I’m guessing fancy douchebag lawyer doesn’t believe you.”

She laughed nervously, and rolled her eyes to the side, before eking out, “I mean… not exactly?” She shook her head, not even daring to make eye contact with him.

“Figures,” he said defensively.  “You two…?” he asked, and waved a hand side to side to complete the thought.

She wished she could say ‘no,’ to avoid his censure, but the most she could muster was a small and quick flash of her eyes to see how observant he was.

He chuffed sardonically and backtracked with, “Never mind.  It’s none of my business.”

He thumbed his nose and shook the paper, then took a long sip, while Anna extended her arm across the length of the table and rested her head on her arm.  She eyed the shotgun that leaned against the table next to him, comforted that it would only take a couple of seconds for it to be resting against his shoulder while he looked down the barrel with one eye open.  Then she watched his eyes move across the page, and closed her eyes as she listened to his slow sips and surprisingly melodic “aaahs.”

She woke up to a loud chime from the foyer, and a large jacket dropped from her shoulders to the ground.  Kristoff, and his gun, moved swiftly to the entry to the kitchen.  

He waved a hand, and whispered, “Behind me!”

Anna picked his jacket off the ground and shoved her hands into the way too long sleeves, and lined up behind him.  They toured the entire front part of the house until he was satisfied they were alone.

She stood, speechless as he turned to her.  She was staring, and he opened his mouth to speak, but she blurted out, “Hans is my ex.”

His face relaxed, and Anna cleared her through to clarify, “Ex-husband.”

Kristoff strung the gun up over his shoulder and folded his arms.  Then he squinted, and asked with a shoulder shrug, “Does he know that?”

Unable to tell if he was teasing her, Anna shrugged a strand behind her ear, which burned despite the cold.

Then he stretched his long sleeves as close to his wrists as they could go, and adjusted his jacket around her shoulders so it covered more of her.  His hands lingered on the faux shearling collar, until Ryder plodded into the room.

Kristoff backed away before Ryder could finish his yawn to ask, “What’s up?”

Anna took another look at Kristoff, who looked everywhere but her. Her lips curled up at his fluster, happy for some relief from the chilly silence she knew would end soon.

She nuzzled into the soft and fuzzy jacket collar, and she felt safe.  Until the cuckoo clock chimed and the snowman popped out and danced in a clockwise circle, giggling maniacally.

Anna scrunched her eyes shut and ducked her head beneath the folds of Kristoff's jacket, not opening them until the strong arms suddenly braced around her upper back relaxed, and said, "It's ok, he's gone now. We can just relight the fire."

Anna came to her senses and backed away from Kristoff. "He's going to come back, though. And next time he might do more than put out the fire."

"And we'll be ready for him," said Honeymaren as she and Elsa entered the room.

"Ok, we've got six hours til the next chime," Honeymaren reminded them as she quickly flipped her pocket watch open and shut. "Let's get moving!"

Kristoff looked at Anna, unflinching and earnest, over his shoulder as he adjusted the logs. And she trusted his silent promise that this time would be different.

I know I'm posting it a bit on the late side, but I had a bit of a whirlwind weekend and today is Valentine's Day, so I'm not terribly far behind thankfully 😅 Does this story even make any sense? Hey, Kristanna Fandom! Halloween is almost 3 months away! There's just a few things to keep in mind as you start thinking about your fan works for Kristanna Halloween Days 2022.

All works should be Kristanna based.  Threesomes/poly relationships that include Kristoff/Anna are allowed, along with gender bend/rule 63.

There are 7 themes for postings on specific days throughout October, along with one freebie theme to use any time.  Each theme is broad enough to have the potential for cutesy, erotic, and horrific.  Works should at least be related to the designated theme for the posting day, and do not necessarily have to be about Halloween, though they should at least be seasonal.

All ratings are acceptable, but please tag and trigger warn appropriately, and adhere to Tumblr's terms of service.

Kristanna Halloween Days 2022

Kristanna Halloween Days 2022 is a Kristanna fan days event. There are seven themed days throughout the month of October, and one freebie theme that can be used in place of or in addition to another theme. You may pick one theme, or as many as you want. You may post multiple works for each day, in the same or different types.

This event is open to all fanworks - fanfic, fan art, fan edits, analyses (I'm sure there's a way to make a connection!), & more! There will be an AO3 collection for fanfic - more details to come.

The themes are open ended so you have flexibility in what you write about. Anything goes! All ratings welcome!

I've given some examples of topics below, but these are just examples. Use your imagination!

Ask Game: 🧠 and 😈

Not-Quite-WIPS... Honestly, where do I start!? I get new ones all the time! I'll stick to just two here:

1. Last Unicorn AU (Frozen - Kristanna; Helsa; Aroace Elsa): the 4 spirits have left the forest a long time ago, so Elsa is on the search for the illusive 5th spirit to help save the others. She gets captured by Honeymaren and Ryder for their zoo, but clumsy assistant Kristoff frees her and reindeer Sven. Then they meet Anna, who has been raised by rock trolls, in the forest. Then they meet Prince Hans and King Wesselton at the castle by the sea. One day I will set words to this one but not anytime soon...

2. Frozen MMORPG (tentatively titled "In Real Life") (Kristanna; Elsamaren; Hans/Anna; Kristoff/Ryder): A group of OCs (the Frozen gang with different names) play Frozen: The MMORPG together when the Honeymaren OC (who is into it) meets the Elsa OC and drags her along to play with her brother (Ryder OC) and roommates (Sven and Kristoff OCs). Elsa OC recruits her brother Olaf OC and sister Anna OC, though Anna OC is very unwilling at first. Meanwhile, Anna OC and Kristoff OC know and hate each other in real life, but they fall for each other in game as they help each other through break-ups. What will happen when worlds collide and they find out who they are in real life? I have nothing written for this, but it has to manifest bc it's my husband's prompt and he specifically requested it for a birthday/anniversary gift. So it has to become more than an outline in my head at some point in the very near future...

3. Oh lots of drabbles/one shot ideas for the Kristanna Halloween Days event. Still pondering those, but I do have outlines (in my head) for Haunted Arendelle (birthday present for an IRL friend that actually reads and likes my fic) and Spellbound (birthday present for me!). Haha! I shall leave you in suspense for those.

What do I do that my readers hate? I can't be sure, but I give my characters flaws and they make mistakes (sometimes huge ones) and there's consequences. For example, in one story, Kristoff is an alcoholic, and he gets arrested for his third offense drunk driving (no one gets hurt) and gets sentenced to 5 years in prison, and it lands him in a coma another time. In that same fic, Anna loses her temper and says some really, really mean things to someone that didn't deserve her harsh words. And doesn’t take the morning after pill even though she promised she would. Every time I post chapters like that I always assume people will stop reading, but they keep showing up. I'm not sure that doesn’t mean they don't hate me, though lol.

Also, I'm sure, taking huge gaps of months and months between chapters for preservation of mental health. I know I shouldn’t feel bad about that, but I can’t help feeling a little guilty. I actually do have every intention of finishing them eventually! Promises!
