Hey!! I have an idea for Francis, the reader and him meet at the Krelboyne picnic after she offers him a lighter but instead of what happens to him and Jody, the reader walks off before he can give it back. The rest of the time he’s going around looking for her and he finally notices her number engraved onto the lighter - her flirting tactic
See The Light (Francis Wilkerson X Reader)
Masterlist
Request Something!
Summary: Stuck at a Krelboyne picnic, you go behind the building for a secret smoke. Francis appears with the same idea, and asks if he can borrow your lighter. But you’re gone before he can give it back.
A/N: modernish au (they have smartphones) and warning for smoking cigarettes ig (shouldn’t be surprised tho, it’s literally in the ask + summary lol). S/n means sibling’s name
***
Today was a long day, and it was only noon. Having to go back to your old middle school on a hot day for your sibling’s Krelboyne picnic wasn’t your ideal way to spend a Saturday. You suppose that it could’ve been a lot worse, though.
“Y/n.” S/n furiously patted your shoulder to gain your attention.
“Oh my gosh.” You swatted at their hand, giving them an incredulous look through your sunglasses. “What do you want?”
S/n pointed over to the courtyard entrance. “That’s Malcolm, the new kid I was telling you about.”
You were about to ask your sibling why they thought you would even care, but lost your words when your gaze followed their finger to the new kid and his family. It was a family of six: Malcolm, his parents, a younger brother, and what looked like two older brothers.
And the oldest was hot.
“Huh.”
S/n ran away towards Malcolm with a few of their classmates, but you were too busy staring at the blonde boy to notice. He seemed about your age and equally as excited as you were to be here.
After Malcolm’s classmates dispersed, he whispered something frantically to his brother, who was looking around the courtyard. The blonde was in the middle of responding when he caught your gaze and paused. You were a bit embarrassed at being caught, but you gave a friendly wave to try and seem casual. A grin took over his once bored expression, and he whispered something quick to Malcolm as he waved back at you.
A little while later, you were desperate to get away from the large crowd of Krelboyne kids and their overbearing parents, your family included. Luckily, everyone was getting lunch, so you were able to sneak away from your table to the back of one of the trailer classrooms.
Relieved that you were finally away from the slight chaos, you dug around in your jacket pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes and your trusty lighter.
You were able to take a few drags before someone joined you. “Hey.” Malcolm’s blonde brother slowly approached you.
“Hi.” You responded, bringing the cigarette to your lips again to disguise your excitement.
He leaned against the wall next to you, pulling out a cigarette pack of his own from his pant pocket. He patted all of his pockets before clicking his tongue. “Can I borrow your lighter?”
You smirked, handing it to him. He quickly lit up and inhaled, about to give the lighter back when his little brother came out of nowhere.
“Francis. It’s been half an hour; let’s go.” Part of you wanted to ask what he was so urgent for, but you heard your name being called from the courtyard before you could. You quickly dropped your cigarette and stomped it out before leaving the secluded area.
“Not now, Malcolm. I-” Francis turned around to see that you had disappeared. He looked at his brother, annoyed. “Thanks a lot, Malcolm.” Then Francis took one last drag, stomped his cigarette out next to yours, and stormed off, leaving his brother confused.
Francis thought that he had lost his one chance to talk to you. But then he looked down at his hand to see he was still holding your lighter.
***
Francis had spent the next hour trying to look for you, but for some reason, you had become impossible to find. He resorted to sitting down at the lunch table with his family, eyes constantly scanning the crowds for you. It was like you were invisible, or a figment of his imagination.
But he knew you were real, because he had been tightly clutching your lighter for the past hour.
Francis looked down at the lighter, twirling it around in his fingers, when something caught his eye. A series of numbers was etched into the side, and Francis immediately felt incredibly stupid.
He had your number this whole time.
Quickly, Francis whipped out his phone and typed the number into messages. He figured it’d be better to send a text than try to call you. He started thinking about what to say.
Francis: hey, i still have ur lighter
Francis: my name’s francis btw, malcolm’s brother
As he sent the texts, he somehow tuned out the sudden chaos around him. When he looked up from his phone, Francis saw mothers screaming at each other and kids trying to make themselves throw up.
And then, on the other side of the courtyard, a bomb went off.
***
Turns out, it wasn’t a bomb. But based on what the guys in hazmat suits said, it was about as bad as one. By the time everyone was scanned for radiation, Francis had completely forgotten what he was doing before the biohazard explosion.
But he got a reminder when his phone started buzzing in his pocket. You were calling him. He had decided to save your name as ‘Lighter Girl’ until he hopefully got your real one.
Francis immediately accepted the call and put the phone to his ear. “Hello?”
“Hey.” You said on the other side. “Crazy day, huh?”
He laughed, kicking invisible rocks. “I know, pretty wild.”
“Did you get cleared by the medics?”
“Oh yeah, I’m all good. What about you?”
“I’m fine.” Somehow, your voice seemed closer, and Francis absentmindedly started walking around to try and find you. “So, do you still have my lighter?”
“Yeah!” Francis held it up as if you could see it. “Where are you? I’ve been looking for you for a while.”
You giggled, and Francis melted a bit. “I’m right here, silly.”
Confused, Francis turned around and was startled to see you standing in front of him. You laughed at his reaction, and you both hung up.
“Hey.” Francis smiled at you, before remembering why he had been looking for you in the first place. “Oh, here’s your lighter.”
“Thanks.” You took the small object and pocketed it. The two of you stood still, wanting to continue but not knowing how.
“So…” Francis tried to think of something clever. “Did you put your number on that because you keep losing it, or…?”
You laughed lightly and shook your head. “No, no, not because of that.” You seemed a bit shy about the actual reason, which made Francis want to know more. “I uhm, I did it as a… flirting… thing.” You looked a bit embarrassed by it, but Francis seemed to like your answer.
“Clever.” He said, grin widening just a bit. “You know, I never caught your name.”
“Y/n.”
Francis repeated the name, and you both liked how it rolled off his tongue. “Well, I’m leaving town in a few days.”
“Oh, really?” You looked disappointed, and Francis immediately continued, hoping his words would take the look away.
“Yeah, I go to school out of state.” He decided to leave out the part where he went to a military school, thinking that would probably negatively affect your view of him, even though you barely knew each other. “But I leave on Tuesday. So, if you’re not doing anything this weekend, do you wanna go see a movie or have lunch together or something?”
You smiled, and Francis, being an obsessive romantic like his father, hoped that whatever was happening between you would last beyond the next few days. “I’d love that.”

I'll never say it enough, but the best Malcolm in the middle episode is season 1 episode 8 "krelboyne picnic"
And i could elaborate on how it's because we see all the characters and how cool they are, how we can see the family boundaries, how they care for each others.
In this episode the family finally notice that Malcolm is not just smart, he is brillant, and he is scared about what they can think, he doesn't want to be treated different, and his brothers notice that, and no one change their comportement, they all end happy.
It's my fucking favorite episode.

Malcolm in the Middle 1x08 "Krelboyne Picnic"
★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
SPOILER ALERT
Animal meat burger to non-meat eaters!
Those kind of episodes are common but it is irritating. People have ethical choices. They dont use animal products but father of malcolm brings meat as if it is very important.
Without even trying alternative vegan ones!
That is why I give 1 / 10.
Respect!

I saw your requests are open?Headcannons or one-shot where reader is shy, smart (maybe like Malcolm) and a bit sassy. Reader and Francis fall in love slowly (slowburn), despite all the time, both always end up together.

Request Something!
A/N: S/n means sibling’s name
***
It all started at the Krelboyne’s picnic
He was home from military school for the week, and you had nothing better to do
You sometimes hated that your younger sibling was also smart, because now you had to relive all of the Krelboyne events that you had gone through, through your sibling
You caught his eye first
“You here too?” Francis asked, sliding up next to you after you grabbed a picnic table for your family to sit at.
“Are you serious?” You asked, shielding your eyes from the sun as you looked up at him.
“Sorry.” He sighed. “It’s been a long time since I’ve been around a girl. Especially one so pretty.”
“That must be tough.” You couldn’t let this guy see whether or not his words had an effect on you. You didn’t even know his name.
“I’m Francis, by the way.” Well, now you know his name. But that made no difference.
“Y/n. So, which one’s yours?”
“Malcolm.” He pointed to his brother, who looked like he wanted to set something on fire. You couldn’t blame him.
“Oh, yeah, the newbie. S/n told me about him, keeps talking about how cool he is and stuff.”
“Well, he learned from the best,” Francis smirked. You tried not to laugh. “So, wanna get out of here?”
“Excuse me?”
“Malcolm and I are hopping the fence. You can come too if you want. You look bored.”
“I’m a big girl, Francis. I’m sure I can find something to amuse me.” You saw your family start to come back from getting food. You took that as your cue to get your own. “Thanks anyway.” You didn’t see his smile as you walked away.
He ended up not ditching the picnic
Malcolm had made a bomb of some sort with Stevie’s chemistry set
After getting decontaminated and making sure you weren’t gonna die, you found him again
He apologized for coming on too strong and said that it really was true about him not talking to pretty girls in a long time
You two started to get to actually know each other
The night ended with you exchanging numbers and suggesting the possibility of hanging out the next time he was home from military school
The next time you saw him was when he came back to babysit his little brothers, and he invited you over
“If you want, I can make my brothers stay in their room, and we can watch a movie or something?”
“It’s fine, Francis. Really.” You smiled at the suggestion. “If your brothers are half as cool as you, I’ll have a good time.”
“Oh, I hope you don’t mind, but I invited some other friends over.”
“Oh.” You were a bit surprised. And also scared, you’ve never met or heard much about Francis’ friends. “That’s okay. After all, you’re in charge.”
“Thanks, Y/n. I promise you’ll have a lot of fun.”
You ended up not having that much fun. Turns out, Francis’ friends were kind of crazy. They would’ve turned the Wilkerson house upside down if gravity wasn’t an issue. Instead, they completely trashed the place before being taken off in a cop car. Francis didn’t really seem to care, but his brothers were panicking.
“Francis, we need to clean this up.” Malcolm urged his older brother.
“Guys, relax. I’ll be the one getting in trouble. And what are Mom and Dad gonna do? Send me to military school? I’m already going back.”
Then his little brother Dewey dropped the bomb.
“But we want you to come home.” Turns out, Malcolm had overheard their parents talking about maybe letting Francis come back home from military school. Permanently. That seemed to change Francis’ tune.
“We gotta get this place cleaned up!” The boys immediately went to work, but Francis walked over to you. “I’d get it if you went home.” You shrugged.
“I mean… It would be kinda cool to hang out with you more often.” He grinned and dragged you off to help him with the front living room.
He ended up not coming back home permanently, much to everyone’s chagrin
But at least you could still call him
You had an hourly call every week to talk about whatever had happened since the last time you talked
Talking with Francis more often somehow made you get closer to his family, despite him being far away from them
To the point where Lois and Hal turned to you when it came to babysitting duty
“So, how is it at my house without me?” Francis asked you as you washed dishes, Reese next to you to dry them and Malcolm walking around to put them away.
“It’s actually better than I expected, no offense. Your brothers are surprisingly well-behaved.”
“Yeah? Well, they’re probably only doing that because a pretty girl’s in the house.” You were glad he couldn’t see you blush.
“Francis!” You giggled. “Okay, enough about me. What have you been up to?”
You talked on the phone for a while before you started to get sleepy. You yawned as he was going on about something that he and his friend did.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Am I boring you?” He teased, and you straightened up from your slouch on the couch.
“No, God, no. I’m just getting tired.”
“Then go to sleep, Y/n.”
“I would, but I forgot that this was an overnight thing. Don’t really wanna sleep in what I’m wearing.”
“Oh? What are you wearing?” He asked teasingly.
“Shut up, Francis.”
“Okay, okay. If you want, I have some clothes still at the house that you can sleep in.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, go into the boys’ room. My stuff is in the top left drawer.” You did as told, sneaking into the bedroom so the boys wouldn’t wake up. You grabbed a random shirt and pajama pants before tiptoeing to the bathroom to get changed. You didn’t speak on the phone until you returned to the living room.
“Thanks for letting me wear your clothes, Francis.” You said as you set the clothes you changed out of on the coffee table.
“It’s no problem.” You yawned again. “Okay, I’m gonna let you go now. You must be exhausted after having to handle my brothers.”
“Only a little bit.” You muttered, head already falling onto the arm of the couch. “Talk to you later, Francis.”
“Talk to you later, Y/n.”
It was about a year after that before you saw him again
And you wanted to kill him
You heard from S/n, who heard from Malcolm, that Francis got himself emancipated
That alone was kind of stupid
But then you found out that he was going to Alaska
You went to the Wilkerson house and waited for him to show up when he said he would, so he could say his goodbyes
You glared out the window as you saw the taxi pull up. Francis got out and was going to walk down the little walkway when he saw his dad come out of the house. He smiled at him, but he soon screamed and ran as Hal chased after him. After a few minutes of fighting and yelling, you saw the two walk up to the house.
“They’re coming, Lois.” You called out as you backed away from the kitchen window, following Lois to the front door. She opened it, and even though you didn’t want to, you could only look at Francis.
“Lois, Francis would like to say something to you,” Hal said to his wife as he squeezed past the two of you into the house.
“Hey, Mom.” She didn’t respond.
“Oh, look. The Hendersons painted their house.” She didn’t even look at Frances. She slammed the door in his face and walked away. Hal followed after her. But you stayed at the front door.
“Y/n?” He called out from the other side. “Are you there?”
You yanked the door open.
“I can’t believe you, Francis.”
“Y/n, I’m sorry.”
“You’re moving 5,000 miles away, leaving your family and friends in the dust. And for what?”
“It’s not that-”
“I don’t care. I don’t care, Francis.” You slammed the door in his face.
He was later let into the house, so you took that as your cue to leave. You went home and lay in bed, completely upset. How could he do this? Not just to his family, but to you? You had been friends for three years and rarely spent time together because he was all the way in Alabama. Now, he had left but was now moving even farther away. With every day that passed, phone calls became less sufficient for you.
“Honey?” Your mom knocked on your door, peeking her head in. “You have a friend at the door.” You groaned, getting up and going to the front door.
“What are you doing here?” You asked. “Shouldn’t you be on your way to officially abandon the people who care about you?”
“Y/n.” Francis sighed. “Please, just listen.”
“I don’t wanna hear it, Francis.”
“Well, do it anyway.” He pleaded. “Look, this is only short term. I’m gonna be making good money up there. When I’ve made enough, I’ll come back down here. I will take you out on the best date of your life and make up for all the time I couldn’t spend with you. But you have to trust me.”
Your brain almost short-circuited. Date? You wouldn’t let the surprise and giddiness show, but the thought of going on ‘the best date of your life’ with Francis made your heart flutter. It almost made you forgive Francis for what he was about to do.
Almost.
“How much will be enough?” You asked. He thought about his answer but came up empty-handed.
“I don’t know. But please, just trust me on this. I will come back for you, Y/n.”
“Promise?” You asked meekly.
“I promise.”
You brought him into a hug that almost squeezed the life out of him. But he didn’t complain. He wanted to keep the imprint you were leaving on him in his mind for as long as possible.
“You’re a jerk for basically telling me you like me before leaving for god knows how long.” He laughed.
“I know. But I need you to look forward to me coming back.”
“I always look forward to you coming back, Francis.”
You missed Francis with your whole being
Calls had become a bit more infrequent since he left
But that just made you look forward to them more
He seemed to be doing okay based on what he’d tell you, but you could tell there was something he wasn’t telling you
But you never said anything, wanting to keep your interactions joyful
Speaking of, your conversations had become more flirty because of his confession on your porch
Almost a year later, Lois had invited you over to the Wilkerson house to celebrate Hal’s birthday with the family
Even though you still babysat the boys every now and then, it felt a little out of the blue
But you loved Hal like a second father, so you gladly accepted
“Honey, can we eat dessert now?” Hal asked Lois, staring longingly at the treats on the table. “The ice cream’s gonna melt.”
“No, Hal. We have to wait. You know you like your ice cream soft.” Lois grinned. Her sons mirrored the grin in a way that made you feel like they were all up to something.
“No, I don’t,” Hal said, somewhat confused.
“Yes, you do, Dad.” Reese insisted. Lois gave him a weird look but immediately brushed it off when the doorbell rang. She jumped out of her seat and pulled Hal to the door. The boys stood up too, and Malcolm grabbed your sleeve to bring you with the family.
“Hal, sorry for the wait, but you’re gonna love this present. I just know it.” She twisted the doorknob. “Surprise!” She yanked the door open, and you couldn’t believe your eyes.
“Francis!” Hal cheered as he hugged his son tightly. The boys followed suit, each having their turn to hug him. They all exchanged pleasantries while you stood to the side, still trying to process what was happening.
“Hey, Y/n.” Francis was now standing in front of you. You noticed the family returned to the table to serve cake and ice cream.
“Francis.” You whispered. You reached out and touched the shoulder of his coat, finally believing that he was here in front of you. “Oh my gosh, Francis!” You threw yourself onto him, and he hugged you tight in return. “I’ve missed you so much.”
“I’ve missed you too.” He pulled back to look at you. He brushed away a piece of hair from your face, staring at you.
“When do you go back to Alaska?” You didn’t want to ask. You wanted this moment to last as long as possible. But you needed to know, no matter how much you dreaded the answer. He smiled.
“Yeah, about that. Mom bought me a one-way ticket.”
You were confused. Why would Lois buy Francis a one-way ticket? How would he get back to Alaska?
“You’re staying?”
“I gotta take you out on the best date of your life, Y/n. I can’t do that if I leave.”
You knew this day was about Hal, but you felt on top of the world. You couldn’t help but kiss Francis, keeping him as close as possible to you. It probably would’ve gone farther if you two weren’t standing in his family’s living room. Despite the reluctance on both ends, you pulled apart.
“So, how much was enough?” You asked. Francis’ mind went back to the last conversation you had in person. He sighed.
“It was actually really hard to make money in Alaska; I won’t get into it.”
“Then what made you come back?”
“As much as I love my dad, I didn’t leave Alaska for just him.”
“Then what was enough?”
“Being without you, Y/n.”
