Most complaints about the one piece live action boil down to "this wasn't exactly like the anime/manga, therefore it's awful".
people complaining about how in the live action, sanji didn't see zoro's fight with mihawk, and making a big deal about how that's so awful that they didn't include that, like... why? why is that change negative in any way?
"oh because zoro getting his ass beat convinced sanji to join the crew!" how would that have convinced him to join? i know zeff was all like 'alright you lil shit fuckin watch this guy get got" but how would that convince him to join? "becaaaauuuuuse, it shows how all the strawhats are willing to die for their dreams!"
We got that in the live action though. We got that, and more:
sanji got to see the most important part of the zoro fight: the aftermath. He got to see that no one blamed zoro for it, no one was renouncing their dreams.
luffy's "i'd eat both arms and legs to save zoro's life" line. After a conversation about making tough decisions as a captain (ie: do you stand in the way of someone else's dream? what would you do for your crew?), after sanji tells luffy and usopp about his child starvation backstory and what zeff did for him. And you can see on sanji's face, you can SEE IT, after luffy's comment, how it warms his heart, and how he believes it, that luffy really would do everything for his crew and their dreams.
and what I think really tipped sanji over the edge into joining the strawhats in this series: when luffy decides to fight for the baratie. Again, you can see it in sanji's face after he asks luffy why he'd stick his neck out for the place and luffy replies "you fed us". You can see in his face how this wins him over.
So the "shows the strawhats are willing to die for their dreams/willing to fight" happens at least 3 times, then also add in the fact that sanji spends a lot of time with a luffy who has sincere complements and reasonings to accompany his "you should join my crew" suggestions (especially in contrast to the anime where he's just 'nope, you're on my crew. join. join now.), and you've got a series who better conveyed sanji's reason to join the crew than the anime did. Hmmm.
#wanpiss#wacky pirates#weebs are weebin#as usual#snergle#ramblings#all the changes work better#especially for what the show's established#'it's different' okay does whatever the original contributed outweigh the change's additions?#no.#the answer is no#'but they left out the pirate kids on usopp's island'#not important#guess what: it makes usopp's situation more tragic and compelling#'they didn't fight don kreig'#look. no one wants a don kreig fight. he was a means to show sanji's compassion for people#it was shown in multiple other ways in the live action thus kreig is of no use.#'they changed nojiko and the town not knowing nami's deal'#yeah they made the entire situation mAKE MORE SENSE#it cuts out unnecessary need to explain shit they don't have time for

I’ve read Time Traveler Zoro AUS far more interesting than anything my feeble little mind could cook up on it’s own, but I’d still love try to play around with the premise and give it my own spin.
I’ve read two in which Zoro loses the crew in a great tragedy, so he goes back in time to save them, and the greatest source of tension in the story is the way he tries to hide all the future knowledge he maintains from the others, while still trying to rewrite history. It’s so good and thrilling. But. Yet. However.
I’m reminded of the scene in Sabaody in which Rayleigh offers to tell the crew about the One Piece, and Luffy furiously rejects him. Says he doesn’t want a boring adventure where he knows the ending. And though I don’t recall Zoro saying anything in that moment, I think he would agree. So in this Time Travel AU, when Zoro goes back in time, he does so with the idea that this second try isn’t for him. He wants to help, but if he gets on that boat, he won’t be able to keep himself from giving Luffy all the answers in hopes of saving his life, and that would ruin his Captain’s dream.
So let’s imagine Luffy. At seventeen years old, he sets out on a journey through the Grandline to become the King of the Pirates. He has his navigator, his sniper, his cook, his doctor- all his friends by his side. And things are challenging sometimes, but always fun. And he gets lucky.
He gets lucky a lot.
Sanjj tells him it’s a guardian angel, but Luffy’s not so sure. There’s something at the back of his mind, an itch behind his ear. He starts to notice signs of a certain presence everywhere he goes, a mysterious someone who seems to always want to beat him to the punch, but also seems to never finish the job.
Like back in Orange Town, when he met Nami and fought the Buggy guy, the Clown complained about his knife thrower being put out of commission by a bounty hunter right before the fight. Or in Syrup Village, when Captain Kuroo called for reinforcements two of his officers were a no-show, their crewmates reporting that it was as if the Nyaban Brothers had disappeared into the night. When Luffy met Sanji at the Baratie, he’d felt a tension build within him as he listened to all the rumors of the Greatest Swordsman in the World having been seen nearby. But then, the tension is cut abruptly when Don Kreig walks through the door instead, announcing that he’d escaped the Warlord when some suicidal swordsman intercepted his chase.
In Whiskey Peak, Nami tells him about how she saw a cloaked figure take down 100 hundred bounty hunters without making a sound, as if trying to not disturb the Strawhat’s sleep. Luffy thinks he might’ve seen such a figure from afar when taking a leak, but he can’t be sure. In Alabasta, Ace keeps throwing looks over his shoulder as if searching for someone, but always telling Luffy there’s nothing to worry about. Vivi is shocked to discover someone took down Baroque Work’s Number 1 in a duel a night before their arrival at Alubarna. When Robin joins them at the end of it, she seems shocked to find the crew only has five members, instead of six. But she doesn’t seem keen on elaborating why just yet.
The only place that they haven’t been followed to by this Mystery Guy (as Luffy has taken to calling him) is Skypeia. Almost like he couldn’t figure out how to get up there.
And still, the whole time Luffy’s there he can’t stop thinking about him. Looking left and right as if between the clouds and the trees he’ll catch a glimpse of Mystery Guy’s face. Nami says it’s ludicrous to think that all these instances can be chalked up to same guy. Usopp tells tall tales of how they’re being stalked by a man who fell madly love with the Great Sniper’s good looks, or sometimes he tells tales of how they’re being followed by the ancient God of Fortune, or sometimes it’s any other grandiose tale he’ll accept before he accepts that it’s just a guy, just a Mystery Guy, who is real and Luffy knows it.
He knows, and he’s a little obsessed with it. And it’s not always great. He loses sleep, wondering who are you and do you know me and do i know you and stop getting in my way and why don’t you do it more and do you want to join my crew and i need you to watch me and i need you on my crew.
(Meanwhile, on his end, Zoro is planning how to stop the tragedy that will befall his family. But in the meantime he doesn’t want to just be dead weight. He doesn’t want to be apart from them. He may not have a place on that boat anymore, but he can’t have his Captain fighting his battles. He can’t let his friends go unprotected. So he’ll protect them, protect him, in silence, from afar, always one day head, always knowing what’s coming next)

It was quiet for a few minutes before Ghin spoke up again, "Well, you can't have been seeking it for long. If you don't even have a cook yet, your crew can't be all that big."
"Nope. They're only the fifth and sixth members." Luffy says with a smile as he points at the duo and Sanji grows an irk mark on his head as (Y/N) facepalms. "I told you I'm not going so don't count me!" Sanji yelled at the unnerved captain as he still had a smile on his face.
"You seem like a nice kid, so let me give you some friendly advice okay? The Grand Line is a place you want to avoid. You're still young, there's no need to rush into anything. Remember the Grand Line is a small part of this entire ocean. If you want to be a real pirate, there are plenty of other places out here on the seas to explore." Ghin explained and Luffy had a dead look on his face like he didn't care at all.
"Hmm... I see... Well, why don't you just tell me what to avoid in the Grand Line now?" Luffy asked just a look washed over Ghin's face, which was a look of pure horror. "I can't... I don't know anything. I don't understand it. And that is why I fear it." Ghin says as he places his hand over his eye and he shakes in fear.
"For being a crewmember of Don Kreig's, you're a pretty wimpy pirate." Sanji mocked as he looked down at Ghin and that got Luffy's attention. "Hm? Who's Don Kreig?"
"Don Kreig is known to be the strongest pirate and when he is battling he never gets hit once. He commands over 50 pirate captains, the largest pirate fleets ever seen." (Y/N) explained as she looked down closing her eyes as she clenched her fists. "I was a part of that crew until I left." She says the last part low hoping that no one heard her.
"Is it because he tried to kill you?" Luffy asked and (y/n) tensed up at his question but she didn't answer. Ghin stands up placing his hand on her shoulder with a soft smile. "I have to get going... But it was nice seeing you again (n/n). I wish it was under better circumstances." He says as she meets his eyes making him have a small blush on his dark cheeks.
"Yeah... I hope that I see you again." She says softly placing her hand on top of his. His smile faltered slightly as he wanted to lean in but thought against it as he went over to his small boat with a sigh and a small smile.
"So long, then." He says as he unties the rope and Luffy smiles as he genuinely says "Thank you for the warning, but I'm still going to the Grand Line."
"I know. Do whatever you want. I'm just a stranger, and I can't stop you from going anywhere you wanna go. I just wanted to give you a fair warning." Ghin smiled at Luffy as he said this, before turning to Sanji, "And to you Chef... Thank you for everything. You saved my life, and I owe you for that. Your cooking skills are the best I've ever seen. I hope to come back again sometime." He said with a big smile on his face and a blush to cover it.
"I'll have a seat for you," Sanji says with a smile before Zeff calls down for Luffy and they look behind him to see Zeff on the higher balcony. "Boss Zeff!" Luffy exclaimed. "You're hard to find." He stated before he looked at the empty plate and glass that was abandoned on the deck.
"Hey, Ghin... Go." Sanji says before turning fully to Zeff. "Sorry... You'll probably get yelled at or fired 'cause you gave me that food for free..." Ghin says regretfully but Sanji picks up the plate and cup and dumps them into the ocean.
"Now there's no proof, so there's no way for me to get yelled at," Sanji said defiantly as he grinned, and Ghin gasped his lip quivering. (Y/N) gave a small smile as Luffy let out a small chuckle.
Ghin then got down on his hands and knees bowing to Sanji as he said through tears "Thank you again Chef Sanji! I will never forget your kindness!" The three of them watched as the small sailed away Zeff called out to the two males and they turned to him who was on the top level. "Get back to work already!"
The three of them walked back to the restaurant as (y/n) went back to the table and everyone was staring at her since her outburst, which she promptly ignored as Sanji sat next to her back to his flirting ways.
"These chores sure are boring. I wonder if Coby got tired of all this work, too." She heard Luffy say as he descended the steps and an orange-haired woman called out to him which made him stop in his tracks "Chore Boy!"
"What are you doing here?!" Luffy asked with a gasp as he quickly went down the steps to meet his friends, possibly his crew. "We heard you had to work here for a whole year." A long-nosed man says from the table with a chuckle. "Is it okay if we redraw the flag for our ship?" A green-haired man asked as he leaned against the chair, who (y/n) recognized as Roronoa Zoro.
"You're eating all this delicious food without me?" Luffy asked exasperated as he looked at the food. "What kind of crew are you? How could you do this to me?!" Luffy asked with fake tears rolling down his eyes.
"Hold on... I think that's our business, isn't that right?" Zoro asked the other members with a laugh as Luffy looked at him and picked his nose. "Oh boy, this is going to be so good." The long-nosed boy said as he started to snicker with the orange-haired woman as Luffy looked on oblivious. "You know, I have to say the food here is really quite delicious. Good stuff..." Zoro says as he grabs his cup off the table to take a sip. "Yes, it is. I feel bad for you, but..." He then grabbed Luffy and shoved the water down his throat as he yelled "You should be drinking this yourself!" He said with an evil laugh as Luffy struggled to get out of his grip, and the other two started to laugh.
This caught the attention of Sanji who looked over to them with a scoff and (y/n) was hiding a laugh behind her hand. "I can't believe you did that!" Luffy said as he flailed around on the floor and Zoro stood above him and said angrily "Yeah, well, I can't believe you did that!"
"Aren't they... Quaint..." Sanji says under his breath. "I wonder if that's the rest of his crew." Then his eyes landed on the orange-haired woman and he was gone the next second with a rose in his hand as he held it out to her. "Oh, dear ocean, thank you for this treasure you have shared from your depths." He flirted as he was on his knees in front of the lady and she retracted in disgust.
(Y/N) felt something in her chest as she watched him fawn over another woman, maybe it was annoyance that he was just flirting with another woman after just flirting with her, or it was jealousy. "Ah, yes, my love... I can't bear this hardship of loving you from afar. It is too difficult. I am not prepared to sail the ends of the earth as a pirate if it means someone of your rare beauty will be by my side!" He exclaimed as he covered his face and the other crew members got annoyed by his constant flirting.
"To be together sailing the seas!" He exclaimed once more as he stood up and continued reciting "But how tragic a great obstacle blocks our way." He finished and he didn't notice a looming figure appearing behind him who knocked him to the ground, who was (Y/N).
"You idiot!" She screamed as her hair stood up basically from anger and the crew looked at her scared except for Zoro who looked at her intrigued as he thought of where he saw her from before.
"And that great obstacle would be me, right?" Zeff asked as he came into the dining room seeing the whole mess that just happened. "Sanji..." He says worriedly but annoyed as the blonde-haired man sits up from the ground rubbing his head with a sigh. "Stupid geezer." He says under his breath as he stood up from the floor.
"This is an opportunity you don't want to pass up. Why not join them and become a pirate?" Zeff asked as he crossed his arms as Sanji looked at him shocked. "I have no need to keep you here at my restaurant," Zeff stated which Sanji growled in anger at the response.
Everyone on the Baratie didn't know what was stewing outside the restaurant on the seas and something evil was lurking around the corner.
⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉⑉
Sanji seethed at the owner's words as he stated "Hey, listen, pal... I'm the Sous Chef in this place. What do you mean you don't need me anymore?" and Zeff sighed as he leaned against the table as he continued, "You fight with customers all the time... You flirt with every woman under 80 who walks through here... You can't even cook a decent meal... You're worth less to me than the chum after brunch... That's what I mean."
(Y/N) flinched at the harsh words that came out of Zeff's mouth but she thought that this was what Sanji needed to get that final push. She could hear the cooks from upstairs laughing at what was transpiring downstairs and she knew that they were all in this.
"Oh! And let's not forget about how the other cooks avoid you like you were poison. So just run off and be a pirate or whatever, but get out of this restaurant!" Zeff finished and waved his hand to Sanji like he was an was annoying fly and Sanji scowled. "that's how it is?" He asked in a low dangerous voice. "You shoot off at the mouth and expect that I'm going to take it, old man?" Sanji insulted but Zeff wasn't fazed at all, and Sanji walked closer to him. "I could blow off everything you said, but I won't listen to anyone trash my cooking! I'm staying here as a Sous Chef and that's final! You hear me?!" Sanji yelled as he grabbed Zeff by the collar.
"What do you think you're doing, grabbing your boss by the collar?!" Zeff asked angrily as he grabbed him by the neck and threw him and flew back on the table. "Enough with the games... you can try to kick me out... But I'm here to stay. I'm not going anywhere, old man." Sanji says as he sat up from the table and looked at Zeff with a glare. "Not till you're dead and gone."
"Dead? Hah. I got another hundred years of kickin' your ass left in me!" Zeff says as he walked off and back upstairs. "He's always gotta have the last word."
"See! He says that it's cool! Now you can become a pirate!" Luffy says excitedly as he bends down to Sanji and Sanji exclaimed with shark as he looked at him "Shut up!"
He then got up to fix the table and helped Nami and (y/n) sit down, which (y/n) was still pretty pissed off at him at this point. "My apologies... I hope I can make it up to you with this delightful fruit Macedonia, my princesses." He says placing down two wine glasses and a cup full of fruit, while Nami had a delightful smile on her face and (y/n) scowled as she crossed her arms.
"Wow! You're too kind! It looks wonderful." Nami says as she gave Sanji a smile as she looks at him. "Hey! Don't forget about us, Mister Casanova!" Usopp screamed with shark teeth as he interrupted their time. "We better get some kind of an apology, too!" Sanji got into his face with tea in his hand as he says, "This tea should be more than adequate for you... In fact you should be thanking me."
"What?! You wanna fight? You're gonna regret this!" Usopp retaliated as he got even more angry as (y/n) lets out a sigh out of her lips as she tilted her head to the side and Usopp turned his towards Zoro pointing at Sanji, "Take him out, Zoro!" as Zoro was casually drinking his tea.
"You take him out!" Zoro says ignoring the dark skinned teen and Nami looked at Sanji putting on a innocent font. "Stop it! Please don't fight because of me." She says Innocently and (y/n) rolled her eyes internally. "Honestly, please don't fight. You're causing a ruckus." She says taking a bite out of her fruit.
"Of course, my dears..." Sanji says looking at the both of them with heart eyes and Usopp became even more annoyed as he screamed "Who says it was even about you?!"
"I wanted to tell you that..." Nami started as she was putting up a shy font to get her way and (y/n) knew exactly what she was doing. "All this food here is just delicious... But it's a little too expensive for me." Nami stated rubbing Sanji's chin lovingly to put more act into it. 'Ah... There it goes.'
"Relax, it's free!" Sanji says lovestruck as the man he was and (y/n) sipped on her wine as she glared at Sanji once again and Nami hugged him thanking him. Then he looks over to Zoro with a straight face as he says "You guys still gotta pay, though."
"How very generous of you." Zoro says under his breath and Luffy was sitting at the table laughing as Sanji delivered a kick to his head making it flop around saying, "What are you sitting around for?! You're not here to lounge around." He then dragged him away taking him back upstairs as the crew, minus (y/n), looked on sweat dropping.
Lunch went on like normal as (y/n sat with Luffy's crew and got to know them individually, which she was intrigued about them. Nami was clearly dealing with her own problems and she was very secretive about it, Zoro seemed pretty strong and set on his dream which was like hers honestly, and Usopp... She doesn't know what to make of him. He was telling lies of the different adventures he went on since he was a kid, which she could tell it wasn't true.
Things were quiet as most of the crew left and Luffy was still working on the Baratie for the next year apparently, according to the crewmates, but they wanted to leave now to continue their adventures. (Y/N) was sipping on her wine that Sanji was occasionally filling up for her even though she would decline because she was not much of a drinker.
She noticed that there was a fog rolling in and thought about how much it would be a pain to navigate through it. She heard a glass shatter and looked over to see a woman look out the window in horror as her husband asked her "Darling? Hey, what's the matter?" Then he turned his head to look out the window and the same look appeared on his face as they saw a ship off in the distance, coming closer. He stood up in fear as he trembled and the rest of the customers turned their head as well, and screamed in terror as the boat came closer.
(Y/N) got up from her seat finally to see what was happening and her eyes widened once she saw the Jolly Roger of the ship. "Krieg..." She says softly to herself as she didn't know what to do. Should she run? Should she stay and confront him? She couldn't just leave everyone here to die to that horrible man.
"It's them... They're here!" A man said as he came up to the window with the other patrons. "The hourglasses mean our time is up! What're we gonna do now?! That flag means death!" He continued and (y/n) flinched knowing that she was once a part of that crew. "There's no doubt, it belongs to the ruler of the East Blue... Don Krieg!"
Panic soon raised as every customer heard what the man had said and they scrambled to the door pushing past (y/n) who was shell shocked that Krieg would actually show up.
"But why?! Why would the Krieg Pirates come here?!" One of the customers asked as he tried to push out the door.
(Y/N) studied the ship as it docked near the restaurant and she was quite shocked. "What happened to the ship? It looks like a ghost ship." She asked herself just as she heard the clinking of metal and she turned to the doors to see Ghin carrying a weak Krieg inside.
He looked like skin and bones and even (y/n) gasped along with the patrons and cooks as he started to speak. "I beg you... I need food... And water... We have money... Lots of money. Please..." Krieg says raspily and (y/n/ thought 'Must be bad even if he is begging for food and he is willing to give up his gold.'
"It's been so long, I don't even remember the last time I ate... Please sir... I need food and drink..." He finished and (y/n) narrowed her eyes to look at Ghin. He had the look of sadness or fear on his face, or he was carrying someone that was twice his size, as Krieg begged one more time.
Everyone was staring at him in stun silence as people started to murmur to themselves, but (y/n) wasn't giving into this act of his as Ghin yelled out his name as he fell to the floor. Ghin looked up to everyone as he had fear on his face and (y/n)'s eyes softened just a smidge as he begged "Please, help him! Our Captain is on the brink of starvation! He could die!" But everyone was just staring at them with disgust. "He hasn't had a single bite to eat for days! He'll die if he doesn't get some food soon!" Ghin stopped begging once he saw the looks on people's faces and Patty just started to laugh. "This is great! I haven't laughed that hard in a long time! The great Don Krieg, kneeling before us!" Patty mocked as he placed his hands on his hips.
"We have some money! We're here as customers this time!" Ghin says now looking over to Patty with a glare as he didn't forget the last time what he did to him. "Do you really think I'm that stupid? Hey! Get a hold of the Marines right away." He says the last part to one of the cooks and Ghin looks at him bewildered. "He's finally weak enough to be captured. This may never happen again, and I'm not gonna ruin it by helping him get his strength back!" Ghin growled at his words as the patrons started to agree with Patty and (y/n) was actually agreeing because she wanted that man off of her back.
"I won't do anything..." Krieg finally says as he struggled to get to his knees and Ghin quickly helped him. "Once I eat... I promise I'll leave quietly... So please... Be merciful, and help me..."
"You're a king, Don Krieg! Stop it! Don't reduce yourself to this! You're better than the common beggar! Please, sir! What about your pride?" Ghin says trying to put on an act in front of everyone, and that's one of the reasons why (y/n) and Ghin could never be together. Because of his loyalty to the man that did unspeakable things to her.
"I promise... Please... I'll take the scraps. I'll take anything..." Krieg begs again as everyone was in stun silence as Ghin held back tears. (Y/N) stared at them with distrust and disgust as she knew unlike everyone else that this was an act that they were putting on, and she wasn't going to fall for it one bit.

A Review of “One Piece (2023)”
One Piece is one of my favourite manga. I was genuinely flabbergasted when I heard that there was going to be a live-action adaptation of this. One Piece is a very weird and wacky world that I just don't believe could be brought accurately into live-action. Additionally, Netflix was going to make it and they have failed miserably with manga/anime live-action adaptations. Death Note completely butchered the characters and was not a faithful story. Cowboy Bebop had none of the charm of the anime with terrible writing and also not a faithful story. My expectations for this were at an all-time low but the creator of One Piece, Oda, was involved in this project. So maybe 3rd time is the charm?
The first thing I noticed from the first couple of episodes, was the stunning set designs and costumes. I was surprised at the amount of practical sets that felt like great replications of places in the source material. The iconic ship, The Going Merry, looks 1 to 1 exactly like it does in the manga and it looks beautiful! CGI is implemented to further bring the world to life but it is never overused or bad to look at. The characters look exactly like the source material from their clothes to their hair. They use practical make-up and prosthetics for non-human characters and they look great! The action scenes are also very well choreographed while having no shaky camera which is awesome! Nami, Zoro and Sanji have such terrific fight scenes. I was worried about how they would do Luffy's rubber powers in live action but it is done very well. The music score by Sonya and Giona is terrific. They created a score that really gives off the adventure and pirate feeling. They also do an awesome cover of the iconic opening "We Are" as well.
On that note, the casting of the Straw Hats is perfect. Inaki Godoy captures the optimism and silliness of Luffy without feeling cringy. Emily Rudd, Mackenyu, Jacob Romero Gibson and Taz Skylar manage to bring the core personalities of their characters Nami, Zoro, Usopp and Sanji to live action respectfully. For example, Nami still has her flirty scenes to trick people and Sanji still has the flirty treatment with women albeit no longer bothering them which is an understandable change. The villains are also well cast with each of them pulling off the character in live action phenomenally. The great highlight is Jeff Ward as Buggy who somehow manages to be incredibly scary yet silly which is exactly who Buggy is.
One of the biggest reasons for the failure of previous adaptations by Netflix is the butchering of the story. I can thankfully say that this is not the case in One Piece (2023). The main core of each story is still here and the iconic moments are replicated here as well. It was awesome seeing the moments I loved in the anime being done here in the same manner. The adventurous and fun yet violent nature of One Piece is still retained here. There are changes to the story which is understandable because they need to put the story in an 8-hour series. For example, they removed side characters like Johnny, Yosaku and Jango or changed how fights are resolved and how arcs end. Nonetheless, these changes don't hurt the series and it is quite impressive that they managed to still tell the same story. The tone of the show is a bit more serious than the source material but this is also understandable. Manga and Anime are different types of media than a live-action TV show. Not everything can be brought to live-action without coming off as weird but the showrunners understood that and struck a good balance between serious and wacky fun without leaning too hard in either direction.
There are some bigger changes in the story such as introducing the character of Garp very early and having Arlong as the villain in Baratie arc instead of Kreig. I am kind of mixed on these changes as I do understand why but they also create some problems. The introduction of Garp who is chasing Luffy is done to create some tension and stakes for the characters that would be present for the whole series. It was also done to give perspective for the Marines in the form of Koby who has a bigger role in this series compared to the source material. Garp comes off as more scary than he normally is, to the point that he almost feels nothing like Garp should be at times. His character has weird tantrums that feel a bit odd as well. The subplot of the marines also ends up taking a lot of screen time from the main plot which leads to the main story feeling short at times. Arlong's early introduction was also done to hype him up as the big bad of the series. The problem is that the Baratie arc is meant to be focused on Sanji but he ends up feeling overshadowed in his arc by Zoro and Nami who are now more focused. Sanji's decision to leave and join Luffy isn't as well built up because of this change. The creators did very well with the 2 episode limit per arc but the Baratie arc suffered the most.
Overall, I honestly can't believe that the one I thought would be the most unadaptable, ended up being the best adaptation Netflix has done so far. They managed to accurately bring the world of One Piece to live action, which is quite an achievement. It seems Netflix has finally learnt from their mistakes and started respecting the source material. Them bringing in the creator to be more involved seems to have also paid off. I'm not sure how many seasons can be made for this considering how long-running this series is but I certainly want a season 2 if this is the quality of the show!

It’s interesting Kreig has such an extensive fleet. This is like Orlumbus (who stole a country’s entire fleet when he became a pirate lol) or even Emperor-level crews, so it’s no surprise he figured he could tackle the Grand Line.
I like the parallel that Kreig, Luffy’s first real tough enemy, had over 5,000 men and the Straw Hat Grand Fleet also has over 5,000.

Grand Though Line
Continuing to reread Dressosa has been helping me to piece together a neat trick Oda consistently does to help the stories between arcs flow together as well as they do.
The basic idea is, Luffy and the Straw Hats often deal with similar things to what the main allies/enemies from the previous arc(s) did. And in the finale of each leg of the journey, many of the ideas all return at once.
In the case of Wano as the previous arc, The Akazaya, Beast Pirates, and Big Mom Pirates all lost/were separated from their leaders, and ideas of your ties to your family, found or blood, can be either liberating or restricting, is big during Wano, and well as Dressrosa and Whole Cake Island.
-Rebecca chose to live with Kyros, some members of the Grand Fleet have these ideas worked into their arcs, and there is so much relevant to these themes around Doffy’s relationship with his father and with his crew.
-Big Mom’s dream caused so much strife for her family, as did Judge’s dream for Sanji. Though characters like Chiffon and Praline, while they left the Charlotte family behind, found happiness with the people they met while part of Big Mom’s crew.
-Oden took in the Akazaya and gave them a home and a place to belong, though readily fled from anything that got in the way of the adventure he so deeply wanted, splintering that family in the process. However, as a result, Izo did find a place among the Whitebeard Pirates, one where he felt most at home. And Kiku may have similarly found that place apart from Wano as well, maybe among the Straw Hats?
-Kaido offered anyone who joined him a chance to rise to the top of the world’s summit, though ultimately concerned himself only with might. He could not hope that pirates would not betray him, he could not hope that humans would not fear him, he could not hope for a world without violence. To Kaido, hope is a weakness but he could not be further from being right, hope is a strength.
It’s fitting then, that his defeat was at the hands of an alliance that was formed on peoples’ hope to see the dawn that Kaido couldn’t, who relied on each other and built connections, not through might, though with skills that Kaido would scoff at for being weak.
-If anyone, including his crew or own kid, got in the way of crushing that hope, they were viewed as enemies who Kaido needed to forced into servitude until they lost all hope.
Many of these themes have made themselves known on Egghead, though the arc is still ongoing, it’s tough to say what the ultimate point will be.
I’ve had the idea that only Luffy may be separated from the crew in the back of my mind, since just a few chapters after arriving on Egghead. With characters like Kizaru, Sentomaru, and the Pasifistas being here, the Sabaody parallels were becoming evident from early on.
This idea of these wide reaching through lines carries all the way back to the East Blue, with the most prominent thematic through lines I see being those of status - Luffy wanting to be Pirate King, Zoro wanting to be the World’s greatest swordsman, Alvida and wanting everyone to see her as the most beautiful, Captain Morgan and Kreig both seeing themselves as the greatest, etc.
Accepting/rejecting the legacy of another - Luffy/Shanks, Zoro/Kuina, Sanij/Zeff, Buggy/Roger, etc.
And dishonesty/lying - Arlong about freeing the village, Kuro about who he is, Nami and Usopp having to deal with the consequences, while also lying to themselves in ways significant to their stories.
In the Paradise half of the Grand Line, the biggest through lines I see relating to what the Straw Hats face involve contrasting different styles of leadership - Luffy, Vivi, Dorry & Brogy, Wapol, and Crocodile.
How power is used - Bellamy, Enel, Tom, Iceburg, Franky, and CP9/Spandam.
And the threat of your crew falling apart - Usopp & Robin during W7, Moria, the Straw Hats being separated on Sabaody then dealing with the fallout of that from Amazon Lily through the events following the Paramount War.

Gin x Kaku
Next up we have the Kreig Pirate's top fighter, Sanji's first fan, the man demon Gin! He's up against the CP9 swordsman, the cool and calculating giraffe man, Kaku!
Will Gin finally return to claim Sanji's heart? Or will giraffes be cool enough to sway him to Kaku?

OKAY IM ACTUALLY GONNA POST MY OPINIONS ON THE NEW ONE PIECE
TLDR: VERY VERY VERY GOOD JUST FEW DISLIKES
SO first I'm gonna talk about what I didn't like so I can end with the good stuff, cause I do think it was really good! And I actually do hope for more! Also these are subject to change as I just watched all the eps and once with friends and we excitedly talked over quite a bit of it plus it was a bit of a blur
OKAY first problem I had was there didn't feel like there was a really good stand up moment for us usopp in syrup village arc, in the original he had that moment where he was getting torn to shreds literally brought to the brink of death, and he still kept standing up to defend Kaya and the village, and it didn't feel like he got that moment at all really, which was both strange and sad to me, plus with no Jango he didn't get to save the day at all (also mini add on, I agree with moon paws post, with merry dead it felt really weird to just leave Kaya on her own, especially since we didn't meet anyone else in the village like the kids)
The next thing is, well, while I actually liked a lot of the changes they made from the source material (especially in syrup village, despite my major complaint with it) a LOT of the changes made to Arlong Park I really didn't like. The village not knowing her secret, showing her fight with belimeir before literally any other part of their relationship, some of the Fishman stuff, and a few others I can't think of rn, idk I feel like this arc hurt the most from not getting enough time yknow? Like I really didn't feel the emotional impact I felt from originally reading and watching this arc (aqlso another mini add on is no hatchi which was surprising)
One neutral thing before we get into the good is tho there was a lot of fun and silliness, at times this felt like a gritty reboot with the gore and killing and cutting of comic relief characters, part of that I liked and part I didn't, and I know it comes from not having enough time and not having as much suspension of disbelief to play with with it being live action
OKAY NOW TO GUSH ABOUT THE GOOD!!! First is the AMAZING fucking sets and costumes and casting!!! All of the places felt unique and true to their source, the world felt amazing and colorful, with the only thing I can compare it to being speed racer live action movie (tho it wasn't quite that colorful), the costumes were all so fun to see the characters in, and all the actors did so well! I think just about every character we all had a moment where we went "wow [insert characters actor here] is SOO good!" All their interactions were so perfect too! Ugh! Amazing!
And this is rare but most of the changes to the source material I actually really enjoyed! All the added stuff with garp and koby and helmepo was really really good character work, and good showing of the navy system and values and the worldview of the individuals within it. The changes to sanjis character I actually really liked, where he's a bit warmer, and not a sex pest but just more a sap I thought was done really well, along with all the zoro sanji interaction. I thought a lot of the syrup village changes were really well done, as much as I like Jango the cat brothers actually worked really well, and I ADORED the interactions with the crew and Kaya and I fucking ate up the scene where they're getting chased around by Kuro. I'm sad the kreig pirates got phased out but I did enjoy their fight with Hawkeye a lot, and I understand why they did what they did. All the changes to the characters also felt natural and they still felt like themselves yknow? OH ALSO all the buggy stuff was so good!!! Having his head along was so perfect and fun! It was just amazing, amazing show everyone involved should be proud!!

Overall I enjoyed the watch. I was able to go ahead and binge all the episodes, so there is that.
As for the overall story… it’s the East Blue
As far as adaptations:
Episode 1 is probably the strongest in scenes they grabbed. I’ll admit I still wish to see Luffy give the swords to Zoro, but it depends on how they use Helmeppo’s story going from here
episode 2 I find the most… disheartening. But that’s because Orange Town had some of the most iconic scenes of the East Blue arc. The clown top circus was a nice set piece, but it was disappointing thatmost of Buggy’s crew was dispatched off screen.
syrup village, i have things to say. Reading One Piece when I was younger, I have to say I really enjoyed Siam and Butchie and am glad they made it here though I am disappointed thatJango was relegated to cameo only on a wanted poster.
as for the story? This one is the weakest adaptation. Like Orange town I liked the mansion set. But I can’t get over Kuro’s plan. In the original basically Kuro had planed for the Black Cat pirates to attack the town (kill a few people) and then set up a hypnotized Kaya’s death after she wrote the her will.He set up a nice tragic inheritance and he got to still live in the village with the survivors. Herethe attack was meant to take place in the mansion, and without the will it feels like Kaya’s murder would have been more than a coincidence when Kuro essentially would take over the estate. we did get a good Kaya/usopp scene, so that is a plus.
Baratie. Honestly makes me wish we got those original 10 episode order. While I can get behind the reason of combining the Don Kreig fight withthe initial Arlong attack I do think the Don Kreig fight was needed, especially since we don’t get a sanji highlight until the arlong park.
this makes episode 6 essentially all original to the show. Which I’ll admit I kind of like, because this could be seen as a precursor to Luffy’s breakdown later on to the whole Kuma/Ace failure.
Arlong park. Honestly outside of missing Hachi, this one hit most of the mark when it comes to the arc and outside of some nitpicks of Luffy’s character portrayal. Only thing I wished they kept was that Coco village knew about Nami’s plan that way if she ever decided to run away, she could with out remorse. But honestly outside of that, it hit all the marks. Perhaps could have used an extra episode.
Garp vs Luffy was weird, but I guess they had to make a climax to that story somehow. And we get a stinger with Smoker so I guess a possible season 2 will have Loguetown.
Overall just some thoughts on the adaptation. Would definitely put it in a higher tier live action adaptation. Maybe just right under the Kenshin films.

So I got a one piece box set of manga and am reading through Baratie and...
Kreig. Kreig, my man. You're *so* dumb.
Like... okay. Yeah. The log book will help you survive. But if it knew where the One Piece was, Zeff would be King of the Pirates. That's not even getting into the assumption that Mihawk has a Devil Fruit.
And yeah. A lot of that is ignorance. I've consumed much more of this story than he has. But it shows just how unprepared this fucker actually was.
