Poll Runner's Note: Eva and Azula are kind of similar except unlike Ozai, Kinzo is a huge misogynist. Feels kind of weird to make that distinction though like "Heartwarming! Genocidal Fire Lord respects women!"

Also telling Azula that her brutal murder spree was "inelegant" and "undignified" would work: she'd keep killing people, but she'd try to make it an elegant and dignified murder spree.

Azula tried to kill Zuko multiple times, manipulated him, scared him, she was even kinda happy when Zuko got that big ass face scar. MAN she even said "I'll be celebrating the day i become an ONLY CHILD" and then proceeded to try and kill him. They also compliment each other Zuko is an 100% daddy issues man and Azula is like the mommy issues girl.

They were always pitted against each other by their father, and indirectly by their mother. She was everything he was not. She liked to tease and torment him and he absolutely seems to dislike being within eyesight of her. Until he found his honor! Then he was able to redirect her lightning and save his nation!

Krauss, Eva, Rudolf and Rosa Ushiromiya

The four children of billionaire Kinzo Ushiromiya. Every year, they return home to Rokkenjima Island for a family conference. With Kinzo's health declining, to the point where he hardly ever leaves his room, the only topic on their minds is how to carve up his fortune.

Krauss is the eldest, and Kinzo's successor. Even if he's not the smartest of the siblings, his position as heir and imposing physique let him push them around. He even used to beat his younger siblings. Now, they suspect him of abusing his position as Kinzo's caregiver to embezzle their rightful share of the family fortune.

Eva is the second child, and incredibly resentful about it. She despises the fact that despite being so much more intelligent than Krauss, he's always above her just because he's older and a man. She's devoted her whole life to usurping Krauss' position, and then devoted her son's life to becoming the next heir instead of Krauss' daughter. When not scheming against her brother, she loves finding ways to torment and cruelly provoke her siblings, sister-in-law, and the servants.

Rudolf is the third, and with little hope of becoming heir, became a conman and a playboy (though he eventually settled down as a married man and white-collar criminal). Suffering from his sibling's bullying, he turned all their physical and emotional abuse on his sister Rosa. Though unlike Eva, he's stopped being cruel to her as an adult.

Rosa is the youngest sibling, and she's had a terrible life. Even as an adult, she's still terrified of Eva and acts dumb around her for fear of provoking her. But if she was given the opportunity, she could easily make them pay for what she's suffered.

Yup time travel/witch time outside of reality hypothesis is a go after all ange should be 6 not 18. Paranoid eva. Only family? Doesn't ange have kyrie's side of the family? Really says how miserable eva is that she thinks the ushiromiya fortune is the worst fate possible. Huh so eva did keep the witch title. You're beatrice and youre beateice and you're beatrice are there any other beatrice's i should know about? 4 beatrices so far. There's probably more. Ange is soooooo special isnt she. Why do ange and battler have red hair no one else has red hair and ange's parents are kyrie (silver) and rudolph (black)

Ep 4. love the implication that both battler and beatrice don't want their game to end. Landedelta suspects beato isn't taking this seriously. And ange accuses battler of playing around having tea and snacks and making friends with beatrice

Ange queen of hallucinations. Ange's like is like a movie least grounded character yet. Bullied rich girl left alone with fabulous fortune and targeted by shady organization oh and she has magic power and a witch mentor and her dead cousin as a companion i've heard this before this feels like some lonely middle school girl's self insert power fantasy. Soul maria so i guess she's in the meta game now too. Ange main character setup.

What's im mostly surprised with is that reality outside of the typhoon is malleable. I got a hint with george and shannon's or jessica and kanon's inconsistent relationship between episodes. But kinzo already being dead before the conference is on a much bigger scale.

rosa should really not be in charge of a child. She's abusive first of all and she's so busy as a working single parent that she's neglectful. But in the 1980s the family doesn't really have options. Japans foster system is already pretty bad today and it was worse 40 years ago. The other ushiromiyas all have issues. Eva would be the worst, tormenting her. Kraus and natsuhi would look down on her. Rudolph would too. There's no where for maria to go. And of course maria's loneliness is exacerbated by her social isolation. Rosa doesn't have good family relations, dating is hard enough as a working adult let alone the single parent of a special needs kid and the stigma. Maria is bullied at school and has no friends. So outside of rosa maria has no one in her daily life and she barely has rosa. Japanese work place culture is brutal as is but add in the patriarchy and it's crushing for women and worse in the 80s. Maria's pretty strong. Rosa does deserve a life outside of work and maria but yeah the trials of a single mom and in the end i'd say it's vastly harder on maria who is the kid. Rosa is an adult sooner or later people have to grow up and take responsibility for their actions yeah yeah your miserable and in pain and your life is hard but maria's is much harder. Rosa really shouldn't be a parent. Also that social worker saw rosa throw a tantrum and didnt do anything afterwards.

Umineko really is for the girlies. Nourish your inner girl and believe in your own magic power. You can be a witch and you can be a witch and you can be a witch as long as you believe. And thats why so many witches look young. It was the middle school version of eva that became a witch not the adult one. Maria was preserved as a child. Ange gains power by reconnecting with her girlhood. The power of romance. Also all the women peg so hard you can't tell me Beatrice, eva, kyrie, etc dont top.

So lamda and maybe battler beatrice and ange want an eternal stalemate. But why did lamda threaten beatrice that she better win.

Such a prestigious school but the staff are useless. Take a knife and carve up their faces what's the worst that could happen expulsion? If you want something done gotta do it yourself.

I miss battler he looks so fun to mess with. Poor battler it hasn't been brought up but asumu tied down rudolph who loved kyrie so battler was born in a loveless marriage where his dad was blatantly cheating on his wife. And then his mom dies.

Rosa really shouldn't be a parent. Don't have kids if you don't want them and aren't willing to take responsibility. Like you dont just ditch the kid to go on vacation behind their back constantly you tell them you'll be gone one time and get a babysitter and spend more time with the kid. Rosa is just trying to hide her child neglect and abuse. Ah good child welfare showed up let's see if they actually do anything

i wonder how much of ep 3 was true. Kumasawa is still around and virgilia is in the same scene. What about that scene with baby beatrice and virgilia was that faked? Or what about beatrice killing virgilia. If the whole true witch thing was a lie how did Beatrice regain her power as endless and golden witch. Or did she never give it up the titles and there are multiple golden witches at once i mean ange's there at the same time. The events can be faked but there was a lot of magic mechanics in ep3 and now i doubt all of it.

wait the letters with the bank safes... Did kyrie get one days early or something? This scene draws a sharp contrast between the magic characters and the human ones. The magic ones are mostly girls magical powerful childish violent extreme cartoonish they seem like just that fictional characters. The human world ones tend to be adult subdued dull by comparison and more realistic. I prefer the human side the demons and stakes are too anime girl for me. And ange is right at the border of worlds maybe a bit more of the magic side to battlers slightly more on the human side maybe.this really drives home some of the main themes of perspective and girlhood magic

For 2 of the 72 whatever demons arent gaap and ronove kinda weak. This episode especially with the witch's alliance and the bunny band and last ep's reveal with hideyoshi's cigarette, and all the witches and magic this story is increasingly starting to sound like maria's delusion world written in her diary.

Beato's taunting battler this time to force her into submission, just like kinzo. And this is setting off like 15 alarms. 1 kinzo continues to be the worst ever. 2 beatrice has issues i remember earlier ep2? When she talked about love and i was like damn girl who hurt you. But the whole you can own all of me my face my soul my body my power or whatever what is up with that. Ok now they're just blatantly flirting. Aw battler feels unwanted.

Ok so there's some sort of family thing. But why is beato ao hurt by battler not remembering? Also "the study was empty" beatrice burned kinzo but maria survived. Actually in terms of being kinzo's grandchild who battler's mom is doen't matter since kinzo's bloodline is through rudolph. Although now i wonder if battler is another magic summon like sakutaro or witch eva like someone wished wished so hard he became a real boy.

Welp battler's gone o7 ange real main character. Generational trauma the girls are fighting! Oh ange you were 6 it was not your job to fix your aunt. Ange learning sympathy and compassion for all the terrible women she meets. Black vs white magic curses vs healing hatred love generational abuse. Gonna stab kinzo. Of course despite all this black white magic talk ange and the stakes on white magics side brutally murder a bunch of people.

Of course bernkastel is as crazy as the rest, she's a witch. Kinzo being dead the whole time is wild what is up with the kinzos seen ep 1-4. I'm starting to think the episodes are all interpretations of the rokenjima incident but only ep3? Had eva survive and multiple bottle letters were found. Actually what even happened at the end with battler stabbing Beatrice with blue truths and begging him to kill her. But then he stays in the golden land/hell and is flund dead.

Bern sabotaged any chance of ange and eva healing and becoming family, tricked a 6 year old.

Kinzo's hair is naturally white? Why do all his kids have brown hair.

I love the complete lack of self-awareness that the ushiromiya men have. I love how kinzo and kraus both think they are the shit™ despite looking completely pathetic when you think about them for more than five minutes. I love that george presents himself as a gentleman and "the most competent one in the room" at all times completely unaware he still talks and acts like an incel. I want to study them under a microscope

Lambda and bern talk about torturing each other to death and have a relationship based off of manipulating and abusing other people .......... Lambda/Bern is canon, but it’s bad representation. I do not feel like immortal sadistic lesbians really speak to me in a way where I’m too interested in exploring aspects of their relationship to a heavy degree.

I ended up writing a HUGE post about this because the whole sentiment ticked me off.

Tldr: Sometimes things that are canon are worse.

Do I ship them within the confines of the story? No, but lend an ear 2 the potential...

As for saying they both love their husbands, Natsuhi and Kraus’s relationship has A LOT to be desired (he is a misogynist) and Natsuhi seems to be trapped in her marriage due to the inherent power structure OF marriage which undervalues her as a woman. She’s so lonely, she begins using white magic. Alarms should be going off right there.

Natsuhi was raised thinking that was the only purpose as a woman, and her mental and physical health suffers because of her inability to live up to the extreme standards imposed on her. That is a perfect place to explore Natsuhi’s gender and her sexuality. Maybe there is a reason she isn’t fulfilled by her marriage and that could be repressed lesbianism. It’s not suggested in canon, but I like to dream.

Hey, if you’re still incredulous about Eva and Nats cheating on their husbands, polyamory exists.

Natsuhi is amazing imho. I’m not talking in terms of moral superiority, but in the world of Umineko she is super interesting. She is written off by the Ushiromiya’s as a batty housewife, but she is responsible for creating her own limitless catbox without anyone’s help. That’s huge. Natsuhi is a completely underrated character.  She is never valued by any characters for her intelligence and cunning, Eva included.

Now, this is where the canon disappoints me. Natsuhi and Eva are the women who I believe have the most potential chemistry together. If the Kinzo catbox benefitted Eva, the situation would flip on it’s head. If I were writing the story, would I have made Eva so disgusting towards her? No. Am I allowed to cherry pick aspects I like about characters and theorize about a really compelling WLW power couple? Yes!! I am.

Beato/Battler is a ship that is accepted but Beatrice was willing to torture him for all eternity as revenge for not fulfilling his promise to her. I don’t mean to say stuff like “oh all the relationships are abusive so my canonically abusive relationship is FINE”, but people always always bend relationships in Umineko. Shannon/Jessica is incest, for instance. To ship that, I have to ignore the canon that Shannon is related to Jessica, and I will. Similarly, I can also bend and break and cherry pick and twist the story around something I really, really want.

Saying “I get that you’re a HUGE lesbian, but don’t go out of your way to make things gay” is rude. I’m going to keep going out of my way to make things gay even if it means writing over aspects of the story for AUs.

Who told you have a right to make fun of her for it? Why do you think it is acceptable behaviour? I'm guessing, but could that be you think because she harmed someone she was supposed to protecting she deserves mockery and insults? Again, I'm only guessing here, and it can be not your way of thinking, but if it is, shouldn't Rosa also fall into that line since she's abusing Maria?

what makes you think Natsuhi blamed baby for her being abused by Ushiromiyas? Also, "denial of responsibility defended not just her conscience but her self righteousness" - not true. She tried to do it, i admit, however she still feels responsible for the baby and know that what she (presumably) did was wrong, if she didn't the Yasu tricks in 5 game wouldn't work.

i feel like we have different definitions of eye with and without love. For me it's either, she killed the baby or not. But that's also not the most important thing here, regardless of whether she did it or not, she blame herself for it, and Beatrice resents her for it. She bears the responsibility. That's the whole point. Natsuhi felt like that baby was symbol of her failure as a woman. She felt responsible. And after the incident, she was trying to forget, yes. But she never could. She can't forget that baby, because she feels responsible for it, and it's suffering. She thought the baby was dead, and since it wasn't documented, she couldn't grieve it death, Kraus told her to forget the death of baby, so she couldn't tell him either. She couldn't tell anyone. She was held responsible by her conscience, and since you've brought up "commitment to the aristocratic honour", she holding everyone, including herself to high standards, so just imagine what was going on inside her head all these years. She's a old conservative woman, and she (again, presumably) killed a baby. Can you imagine what she felt? Isn't that the most frightening responsibility, acknowledging her sin to the person who will judge her harshest and know everyone about her - herself?

Anyway, I'll recite your original post, and want to ask you something.

now that i think about it only natsuhi only ever talked with kinzo. Wow they faked kinzo's death for over 1 year maybe almost 2 years. Oh of course natsuhi has witch potential everyone is a witch. Next it'll be revealed gouda is a demon, genji and kumasawa are already a demon and witch and shanon and kannon are familiars. Also i like gouda better he got union busted and then industry blacklisted! Beatrice really got written out of the narrative wow battler really did kill her soul probably should have just tried to win and checkmate instead.

There's probably going to be new characters all the way until the end. In some ways this makes thematic sense as umineko is a meta story about stories. So continuing to add increasingly outrageous and contrived characters highlights the fictionality of the story. But for that reason i also on a personal level dislike it it usually shows a writer's lack of confidence in that they need to keep adding characters to keep it interesting instead of building on existing characters and narratives and i prefer this style. Like this entire story outside of ep 1 is about witches rping their self insert ocs in a dnd campaign and i dont like it but that's what it is.

Also i'm gonna say the character designer sucks and the characters designs lack style. You can see a lot of japanese lolita inspired fashion but it's all ugly lolita can be very cute and elegant, a dollesque delicate antique charm but these designs are all just so uninspired and boring. I'm imagining a bette universe were the devs for financial release actually hired a good character designer to redesign everyone. And I do mean design not art the ps3 sprites are fine art wise even if i don't especially like the style but it's the designs im complaining about.

Kraus really is an idiot. It was obscured just how bad his business decisions were in ep1 because it's from narsuhi's narration but wow signed over power of attorney and the house horribly in debt as marcie says "they're larping rich people". Natsuhi really puts up with so much with kraus. this is actually fairly common for irl rich people, any middle class family would be bankrupt 10 times over from bad decisions they only arent because the family is rich to begin with. Making money when you are rich is really easy so the fact that kinzos kids haven't made money or even lost some shows how incompetent they are. 1.01 of 100 is 101 or a gain of 1. 1.01 of 1000000000 is 1010000000 or a gain of 10000000.

The epitaph can be explained in terms of risk and magic if its true that beatrice gains more power the harder she makes her win and the more he helps the ushiromiya solve the epitaph. The greater her risk if loss the more powerful the magic.

Natsuhi should have told her family about the threats. Someone trying to squeeze into the succession line or extort is extremely likely. Unless she really did cheat on kraus.

Damn skip the mystery genre dlanor just killed the scifi genre yeah this is going full meta they're arguing about what genre the story is

Oh natsuhi did you think nothing would happen by obeying the suspicious orders. Why is natsuhi beatrice's master in this ep. Or why did lamdadelta makes things that way. This has become a witches vs humans into a detective vs beatrice game. Who's to say eva and eriko arent lying about the paper seals. Watched safiya nygaard's newest video and all i could think about the "expressive" thin 1920s movie star eyebrows was battler. Maybe I've gotten used to the artstyle but battler is looking more handsome as the game goes on.

Anti fantasy anti mystery and all the focus on the culprit being introduced early and yet umineko keeps introducing more and nore new characters and so there of course there needs to be dialogue to introduce them and the story gets bogged down. Every scene is necessary but some could have been rewritten or combined. So far i think umineko could have been rewritten to be 30% shorter or more concise. Again it highlights the fictionality and thus enhances the themes but i personally dislike the style so im happy to be listening to it at 2x speed. I can see why umineko and utena have such large amounts of overlapping audiences, it's for the girlies, for the transfem lesbians.

This story really is unfolding into a slow burn romance doomed by the narrative straight couple. One of the things that leaves a bad taste really is how beato is turned into someone to be saved. Her narrative agency has been taken and she's been written out of the story her role relegated to how battler feels about her, someone to be pitied and saved. And i dont like it

So battler did become both kinzo's sucressor and the holden witch+endless sorcerer.

Ep6: uh yikes. Forced marriage under what jurisdiction? Demon law??. Also isnt eriko like 16. Baby gm bullied and cornered by sadistic player.

Yeh this person lite wrote fanfiction about ange's murdered family where they get brutally murdered in various ways. And she's the god of fiction oh things are going to get even more meta huh.

Father??? There is no good interpretation. Oh this is the homunculus beatrice that rosa met. Amnesia factory reset beatrice. Reminds me of that pop culture detective video born sexy yesterday about how creepy these new being romances are. But back to the father thing. Given how many kinks have been brought up there's the obvious daddy kink. But then there's kinzo's grooming and battler has taken on his literal mantle. So new beatrice calling battler father is a little creepy, at least he isnt encouraging it. Battler literally doing the exact same thing kinzo did keeping a factory reset beatrice. Battler turning into kinzo 2.0. Ugh game meta, the pieces, the players and meta, the "real" versions. Beatrice is the embodiment of the game so does she change as the game changes? Even if the soul as godwitch says is the same, she lacks memories. Battler is chasing beatrice who's existence is permanently gone as stated in red. She will not come back what will happen to the new beatrice even if she gains the memories of old beato would be be the same person. Was battler really the mystery natsuhi baby. Beatrice being his piece makes some sense from the servants death to the weird poeerplay between them and whatever sin beatrice was talking about. But then if we look at the ages homunculus beatrice also makes sense as the baby. The closed timeloop hypothesis was one of my hypothesis but if that actually end up true like battler becomes kinzo or new beatrice loops around to becoming the beatrice at the begining of the series i will freak.

Oh great there's yet another beatrice. This is the one who gave shannon the brooch, so there were 2 all along???? Why didn't battler revive this one. And is this actual time travel. Did battler manage to make new beatrice a human?

New Beatrice is devoted to subservience and battler is over here hallucinating begging Beatrice to bully him poison him degrade him. Kinzo makes more sense now. It's been like 3 days battler. And beatrice was the one who gave new beatrice to order to serve battler, messed up. Daughter??? Author you sure you want to phrase it like that. Battler recreating new beatrice is just making both of them miserable. Battler's coping with loss and bringing new beatrice into that grief was the worst possible option he should have just given himself room to grieve. He also should have researched before creating life and known before hand that the new beatrice wouldn't have memories. Because having her and her own crisis around just keeps him from coming to terms with beatrice's loss.
