Untitled Fadel/Style One-Shot Preview

Summary:

Almost two years after being released from prison, Style’s insistent words about not rushing to the altar are echoing through Fadel’s brain. He's tired of feeling like he's failing Jay, who sends him curious and expectant glances every time Style isn't looking. Fadel also feels confused whenever Style buys him expensive presents or asks about buying a house together, but still puts off the marriage conversation. It's one Fadel accepted putting off before. It used to feel like a daunting thing to talk about, despite genuinely wanting that future with Style one day. Now, Fadel tries to find ways of bringing it up nervously and hopefully, only for Style to successfully redirect the conversation.

So Fadel just finds himself frequently looking at the ring he designed sitting in his online cart, wondering when he will ever feel confident enough to buy it. It doesn't come down to money. He has the money. The restaurant is so successful that they gave all the new employees raises and bonuses. It doesn't come down to Fadel not wanting to make that step. Considering it has become the thing he thinks about the most, he knows what he wants. He just thinks Style doesn't want the same.

When he has a drunken bonding night with his brother to talk (and maybe cry) about it, Bison just says, “Don't worry. Marriage isn't everything.”

It’s a statement that might be more comforting if Bison weren't wearing his own engagement ring while saying it. But while there is still validity in the statement, he and Style are going on an extended vacation soon. He will buy the ring just to have it on him. If he can find a way to have a productive conversation about the possibility so that he can know where Style stands for sure, then maybe - just maybe - he will be able to ask the love of his life the question that has been gradually traveling to the front of his mind for years.

Or…

Fadel wants to propose. Style has other plans.

Notes: Babe and Captain Christ's son are in a semi-secret relationship in this, which makes things both beneficial and complicated for the entire group. I named him Ben. 🤷‍♀️

As late as Heart Burger is open, Style often works in the garage even later.

It's a habit that Fadel has gotten used to, although “used to” isn't really true. They had planned to cut back a little on work, even though Fadel understands it is hard with the situation they are now in. The restaurant has been a big enough success to hire a full line of rotating staff. Fadel is able to pay them well and provide benefits. There have been multiple prominent food critics who have reviewed it positively and sometimes the crowd it attracts is overwhelming. He has been given investment offers in hopes that he will expand and open more locations.

Soon. Maybe. But managing one restaurant - along with going to culinary school part-time - is enough for now. Opening a second restaurant after only being out of jail shy of two years seems like too much, too soon.

And still, his work load doesn't compare to Style’s. The blocks on Style’s schedule are always filled. Despite hiring some of the most skilled mechanics in the region to cover the consistent line of expensive cars that flock to him, Style rarely takes time off. Along with a large customer base, he is now contracted by the International Kratingdaeng Racing Team to upgrade, optimize, detail, and provide maintenance to their racing cars prior to and during big events. Just last week, he was flown to Shanghai to work the International Circuit with all of his expenses paid. To be fair, he asked Fadel to go with him. Style had gotten the okay to invite his partner. But Fadel would have been away from the restaurant, and he would have missed class. He said no.

Fadel should have said yes. If he had known he would barely see Style after he returned, he would have missed class and gone.

Style hired people to take off some of the load so he could be home more. They are renting a house down the street from Style’s father to have their own space but to stay close by. They got it to build a life together, at least until they decide on a home they want to buy, or maybe even build. But how are they supposed to do that when Style is barely even home? Fadel may be a hypocrite for feeling this way. He's at the restaurant a lot too. But he has tried to stay home more, only for Style to pick up last minute emergency repairs, be specifically requested for a job by a prominent client, or go in to rebuild a motorsport vehicle from scratch. He gets paid well. As much as Fadel is now making, Style makes way more, and that doesn't even include what he makes as a business partner at the restaurant.

Fadel is proud of him. He is. But he's also upset. Maybe it was finding freedom away from the woman who stole and almost completely ruined his life, or maybe four years worth of prison mandated therapy sessions, but he recognizes why he feels so hurt. Those sessions happened because of Style too. Fadel and Bison just found out a few months ago that Style and Kant somehow manipulated the captain into getting the prison to offer more mental health services. Fadel was both touched by the effort and took offense to it. He also said as much. There is a possibility that without those services, Fadel would have pushed Style away for a while and not said anything at all. Instead, he expressed the conflicting feelings, just like he expressed how much it bothered him when Style stopped showing up at the prison as much without any warning.

He should probably tell Style that his lack of presence now also bothers him.

Instead, he calls his brother about it. Again.

“He's still not home,” Fadel says as soon as Bison picks up. He really doesn't have anything to say after that, so it makes what he did just say linger in the air more heavily.

“Your boyfriend is a workaholic,” Bison says, “I know he wanted to pay off that business loan and won’t let you touch it. Maybe he is just trying to pay it off sooner.”

“He stormed out when he found out I found the login info and was making payments on it too,” Fadel says. That was the biggest fight they ever had.

Outside of the whole snitch stuff. But honestly, Fadel was the only one angry in that situation.

He still doesn't quite understand why Style had been so upset about him paying on it too. In fact, he doesn't think Style understood why either. They made up and got over it, even though Style remained adamant that it was a gift and to please let him continue paying for it without assistance.

“See? He loves you,” Bison says, “He meant it when he said the restaurant was a gift so he is probably working so hard to pay it off-”

“He already paid off the loan,” Fadel cuts in, “Ten months after we were released.”

“Shit,” Bison says, “That's impressive.”

“He has no reason to keep working like this.”

“Fadel,” Bison says calmly, “You work a lot too, even though you don't really have to now.”

“Only because he does,” Fadel says, “What am I supposed to do? Stay home without him?”

“Or spend time with your brother,” Bison says, “Come over if you are this upset.”

“I’m not upset.”

“You clearly are, or you wouldn't have called me about this,” Bison says, “Come over. You can help me study for my future entrance exam to med school.”

Fadel sighs, “I don't want you getting your hopes up, only to be told they won't give you a shot. You're sure Captain Christ is going to expunge our records?"

“...That's what he said after we got out,” Bison says, even though he sounds unsure of that himself, “He said that we just needed to go five years without getting into trouble and he would get it done. Ben might convince him to do it a lot sooner. Besides, he seems to have warmed up to all of us. He really likes your restaurant. He has you cater for department events.”

“I hate those,” Fadel mutters, “And I hate that so many cops pick up take out. It's because I hire ex-felons and they want to intimidate them. I know it.”

“I am pretty sure it's because The Korat Daily wrote your restaurant up as the hippest and most surprising comeback and rated your menu five stars!”

“It's not going to be hip if cops keep showing up to eat there.”

Bison snorts at that, “I’ll still be proud of you, even if your restaurant caters to cops.”

Fadel wants to gag at the thought of it. Maybe he should open that second restaurant. And if that one attracts cops too, then he will open a third with a completely different menu and theme and work at that one instead.

“I don't think it's only your restaurant that won him over anyway,” Bison continues, “Style also won him over by rebuilding and fixing his old muscle car that every other mechanic said was a goner. And I think I won him over by tending to Ben during the seizure he had while he was working with Babe on their short film last year.”

“Are you still under the impression that Ben and Babe might be a thing?” Fadel asks.

“Totally,” Bison says, “Kant keeps fishing for hints and Babe isn't saying shit. Even after they got cast as a couple in that BL together, he won't confirm anything. It's supposed to be explicit too! It's really bothering Kant.”

“Ben and Babe possibly being together and not admitting to it or the future explicit sex scenes they might be in?”

“...Both,” Bison admits, “But mainly the first thing. He's so hurt that Babe won't give him a straight answer and also weirded out by the fact it's Captain Christ’s kid. I think Ben and Babe feel like it is more of a star-crossed lovers situation than it actually is though, and I think Captain Christ is just as suspicious as we are about them. Instead of saying they are forbidden from dating, he is probably just preparing himself for the possibility that his son might eventually marry into a family of ex-criminals and wants to make us look better for his and Ben’s sake. So I am choosing to believe him. You should too.”

Bison says it as if it is intel from a juicy drama that he's binging, but it just makes Fadel think of how he tried to bring up marriage a few weeks ago and Style started talking about something else.

He talked about work.

Babe and Ben getting married would be strange, but like Kant and Bison, they’ll probably get married before he and Style ever do.

“I’ll let you go,” Fadel says dully.

“Ai, wait,” Bison says, causing Fadel to pause, “We got off topic. I'm sorry. You want me to come over instead? You still sound upset.”

“It's late. Don't worry about it.”

“Fadel,” Bison says, “Why don't you go to the garage if you miss him so much? It's literally down the street. It is not far. I'm sure he would love to see you.”

If Style wanted to see him, he would be home already. But Fadel forces himself not to say that.

“Seriously,” Bison says, “Go. I bet you brought him home dinner too, huh? He tends to forget to eat. You’ve complained about that more times than I can count.”

He did make dinner.

Fadel clears his throat, “...I don't know if he wants to see me.”

“And I don't know why you would think that,” Bison counters, “Get out of your head a little. Go see your man. Everything is fine. He's just a workaholic now. Kant said it became a thing before we even got out. He probably gets hyperfocused and doesn't know how to stop.”

“But-”

“Go.”

Bison hangs up the phone before Fadel gets a chance to respond. Maybe he should go.

Or he can leave the food on the counter and go straight to bed in order to guilt Style.

No. That's not the right thing to do. It's sort of pathetic as well. So he picks the food up, heads out the door, and walks down to the garage.

This is not a UK can but is a very interesting part in the story of energy drinks in the UK and the rest of the world. Hailing from Thailand this is a separate Red Bull company to the one we know in the UK and USA today although it was the inspiration. The story’s worth a quick read on Wikipedia.

I love the simple look of this bottle, it almost looks like medicine, but it’s just a shame that I haven’t looked after it well. It would be really hard to read any of the information around the edge of the label anyway due to the tiny font size but along with the wearing of the label isn’t now even more difficult.

This bottle is still sealed and looking at that use-by date, I don’t think I’ll be opening it now!
