ATEEZ SMALL PERFUME REVIEW: BALMAIN — IVOIRE

disclaimer: this is not meant to be a serious perfume review, this is something fun for me to do as I love perfume. each and every one of us have different tastes and preferences when it comes to fragrances. what works for me might not work for you, vice versa. tubereuse de nuit, vetiver, turmeric, grapefruit, solar orange blossom, suede

my scent experience:

the fragrance opening is a very heavy white floral scent from the tuberose and it's very powdery as well. as it settles, it becomes woody from the vetiver, and it slowly starts to smell like leather, which isn't my favorite scent, but I don't mind it. once the perfume dries down, it smells warm from the suede, but it still smells like leather. the best way to describe this scent is someone wearing a leather jacket and is holding a bouquet of white flowers — tuberoses to be exact. I wish I could smell the grapefruit and orange blossom but it's straight up a tuberose and leather scent.

the projection is alright, you can definitely smell it but it's not too strong that it bothers me. the longevity was about 8 hours on me which is pretty good and definitely suitable for day and night. I understand why some people would like this fragrance and I get the appeal, but it's not one that I would gravitate towards immediately and it's not my favorite from the collection. I do think this would be a perfect scent for the colder seasons so if you like warm woody scents, this would work for you. if you don't like the smell of tuberose and/or leather, this is not for you.

additional notes from me:

I love Balmain and I love fragrances so when they relaunched their fragrances, I was so excited to try them out. they released these a few months after I left Paris, so I didn't get the chance to try them out while I was there and I wasn't sure when I would get my hands on them, until my friend bought me the discovery collection, I did ask for it hehe. I didn't test them right away because I remembered Hongjoong saying he was going to give one perfume to each member as there were eight of them, but he did mention that he used Ivoire the other day and said he's keeping that one so that's where I started. I'm still waiting for him to tell us which Balmain fragrance each member has so I can upload more reviews, so Hongjoong if you're reading this, let us know when you get the chance.

who would I recommend this to?

anyone who likes the scent of tuberose and/or leather.

those who want a fragrance that is suitable for day and night.

anyone who wants to try out Balmain fragrances.

Their favorite perfumes

As both a fragrance lover and a VIP, I had to find out which perfumes are BigBangs favorites. I could not find T.O.P.s, but here are the others!

G-Dragon

G-Dragons favorite fragrance is Musc Ravageur by Frederic Malle. In South Korea, this perfume is known as G-Dragons perfume. In 2024 PEACEMINUSONE even did a collab with Frederic Malle for a limited edition design of the fragrance which only had 100 bottles. It was only the bottle design that was actually different, the scent itself is the same as in the regular bottles.

I have tried this fragrance and it starts of rather dry and a bit spicy, but soon evolves into a very sensual musk like scent that sits very close to the skin.

Taeyang

Taeyang did a video with GQ Taiwan's Youtube channel in 2024. There he revealed that never really liked perfume due to the chemical scent in perfumes. Untill he recently found the brand Fueguia 1833. This was the first brand that did not give him discomfort while wearing a fragrance. He use Muskara Aquilaria during the day and Luna Roja at night. I never tried those fragrances, but from the descriptions they seem to be quite woody scents.

Daesung

Daesung did a video with Allure Korea's Youtube channel in 2024. There he revealed that he uses Aventus Creed, but only very rarely when he has to look well dressed or when his clothes smell too new. Daeusng prefers the smell of Downy (Lenor in Europe, Taiwan and Japan) perfume jewel fabric booster. He likes to tap his clothes during the day to make the scent reactivate again. In the video they showed the Amethyst Berry scent bottle, but Daesung did not mention if that is the one he actually uses. What he did tell was that he uses so much of the product that his neighbor could smell it through his door, so he started to use less of it now. I have tried Aventus and it smells quite strong of birch, pineapple, moss and I get a super storng black currant whiff.

(Also Daesungs mentions in the same video how much he likes sales when he buys beauty products, so a 1+1 deal would probably make him happy)

Bonus

In 2017, Big Bang did a collab with the brand Moonshot. This collab included a lip balm, a hand cream and a perfume called GD. This perfume is discontinued, but you might still be able to find it on websites wuch as Ebay. I own a bottle of it and it smells very musky with hints of cedar wood and different types of citrus fruits.

my scent experience:

the fragrance starts off very sweet from the marshmallow musk but it's also a bit light from the florals, so it's a light sweet marshmallow opening. as it settles, it's definitely more floral from the orange flower and it has a citrus element to it which makes sense as it is an orange flower. once the fragrance dries down, it's basically the coffee and vanilla scent that we're all familiar with - the warm and sweet concoction that Black Opium is known for. it's by far the most similar variant to the original Black Opium but just with a sweeter opening. I was a little surprised to smell the marshmallow musk in the opening as opposed to the dry down as listed in the notes.

the projection on me is weaker than the original version, but it still has that intensity to it that you can definitely smell it from afar. this perfume lasted around 5 hours on me which is fine by me, but that is a shorter performance time than the original. I wish the marshmallow note was a little stronger in this fragrance and it only added a slightly sweeter element in the opening. this does end up smelling pretty close, if not, just like Black Opium itself. I like this but I don't find it necessary to own both so if you own a bottle of the original, you don't really need the glitter.

additional notes from me:

before anyone gets confused and thought I already reviewed this fragrance, this is a flanker. a flanker is basically a different version of an existing fragrance with a slight change in the notes and it's very common for designer houses to extend their well-known perfume lines with these. this version of Black Opium includes marshmallow musk accord which adds an even sweeter element to an already sweet fragrance and they probably wanted to join the marshmallow train as it was a popular note last year. this isn't the first flanker for Black Opium, so I wonder if Seonghwa owns the other ones.

who would I recommend this to?

anyone who likes the original Black Opium,

those who want an intense coffee and vanilla perfume.

anyone who wants to try out YSL fragrances.
