Hitorijime My Hero

Masahiro Setagawa is a hapless delinquent in high school who is frequently used by local bullies to run their errands. His fortunes change when he encounters Kousuke Oshiba, a high school teacher who is respected for his fighting skills on the streets. Oshiba takes a liking to Setagawa and wants to keep him safe. Although Setagawa doesn't identify as gay, he finds himself becoming more involved in Oshiba's life.

So I watched this anime the other day called Hitorijime My Hero,  and can we talk about the intensity of fetishizing and romanticizing of gay men there is in anime?

The entire anime’s plot is two teen boys being forced/coned into relationships with other men and although the show never shows it, it’s always implying sexual acts between the characters. Don’t get me wrong I’m all for representation in the media but when a show is written strictly to basically fetishize or romanticize gay men I'm not okay with it. The first “story ark” involves one of the main characters, Kensuke Oshiba, reuniting with a childhood friend (Asaya Hasekura) who then goes on to tell him that Kensuke either has to sleep with him or cut all ties with him again. I’m sorry but what the actual fuck? Hasekura later apologizes for asking Kensuke to make that decision, but I still think its super fucked it happened in the first place. They also made a big deal about the decision but decided to gloss over the apology.  The second ark that really irks me is when Kousuke Oshiba, Kensuke’s older brother, and a FUCKING ADULT, tells Masahiro, A MINOR, without any promt or any notion displayed in the show, that he wont sleep with him no matter how desperate he looks? Setagawa is a minor, a fucking minor the same age as Kosuke’s younger brother. Setagawa and Kosuke later get into a relationship and the whole focus of the show becomes just that. Basically what im trying to say is that if you want to represent the LGBTQ community in the media, please do it correctly and dont create a whole show where the character’s sexualities are the main focus point and for the love of god dont add a podophilic relationship on top of it.
