My Review of Tomo-chan is a Girl!
Tumblr media
How did I get into this anime? I’ve seen this advertised on Crunchyroll weeks before premier and a few hypes elsewhere. Okay, let’s see what you’ve got.
Tumblr media
Tomo Aizawa has been best friends with Junichiro Kubota (or Jun for short) for years. They attended many schools together and were bros for the most part. Once high school came around, things changed for Tomo. She seems more worried about being seen as a girl and has developed feelings for her long-time friend Jun. Tomo even said, “I love you” in the first minute of this anime to Jun. And all she got in return was a, “Ah, I love you to bro”.
Tumblr media
Jun is a dumbass! It’s clear that he wasn’t aware that Tomo was a girl for the longest time. It was probably in middle school when she wore a girl’s uniform. Despite that fact, Jun still treats her like one of the guys…which also includes butt-slapping. Jun really should think twice about slapping anyone’s ass.
Tumblr media
When I saw him slap Tomo’s ass, my mind went straight back to an old King of the Hill episode. It didn’t end well for Bobby. But I digress! Tomo, I doubt this meat-head will ever see you as a love interest, let alone a girl. We have about 12 or 13 episodes to see if this changes for the better.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: Holy shit! Same day dub? You’ve gotta be yankin’ me! Okay Crunchyroll, you’ve upped the game yet again. We haven’t been treated to this since the days of Space Dandy. And another rarity these days, the English cast actually sings. It doesn’t happen that often nowadays, but we did get Lexi Nieto sing karaoke in the dub. That was actually comical. That whole scene was. Good job Nieto! Before I go to the cast, something surprising happened in the cast.
A RARE OCCURRENCE: So, I’m about ready to eat my hat when it comes to this. Back when I reviewed Love Live Nijigasaki, I was pretty vocal on the fact that the fans wanted Mia’s Japanese seiyuu to voice Mia in English. I snarked and said it would never happen. Jump to this anime and holy shit, we have someone voicing the same character in both Japanese and English. Even though it is very rare, it has happened before in the past. I’m not including Pokemon here because it should go without saying that Ikue Ootani as Pikachu is a staple everywhere.
Tumblr media
Sally Amaki voices the ditzy blonde friend Carol. Because I had the privilege of watching this anime dubbed, I got the chance to hear Sally in English. Hearing her felt weird yet somewhat familiar. I think it was mostly me trying to pinpoint who is actually voicing her. I didn’t figure out that it was Amaki until like six weeks later. The familiarity was because I had heard her once before. It’s because she was a member of 22/7. Damn, I knew I heard her before. Sally Amaki is someone I expect to hear more from in the future. And the fact that she’s fluent in English surprised me. I mean, REALLY fluent! Okay, that’s enough gushing over this. Here’s the cast.
JAPANESE CAST: *Tomo is played by Rie Takahashi (known for Emilia on Re:Zero, Megumin on Konosuba, Sumi on Rent-A-Girlfriend, Mash on Fate/Grand Order, Ena on Laid Back Camp, and Shino on Girlfiend Girlfriend)
*Jun is played by Kaito Ishikawa (known for Kiawe on Pokemon SM, Genos on One Punch Man, Naofumi on Shield Hero, Iida on My Hero Academia, Sakuta on Bunny Girl Senpai, and Rokudou on Rinne)
ENGLISH CAST: *Tomo is played by Lexi Nieto
*Jun is played by Ricco Fajardo (known for Tatsumi on Zombieland Saga, Mirio on My Hero Academia, Sakurai on Uzaki-chan, Natsuya on Free!, and Kyousuke on Danganronpa)
Tumblr media
FAVORITE CHARACTER: Misuzu…my girl! I love you, but…there’s another! Even though I relate to Misuzu on so much…I’m jumping on the Carol bandwagon.
Tumblr media
Carol for the win!
SHIPPING: I’m sure something will progress by the end of the season. That was my premature take on the matter. Now, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of the main ship.
Tumblr media
At the beginning of the series, it felt as though Jun didn’t seem to be affected by the love-bug or even aware of how girls feel at a certain age. It’s going to take some time for this idiot to get the message. And when it seems like he’s showing some sort of emotion towards Tomo, Jun says something double-standardy. Like other women can do this, but not her. At least that’s how it felt to me.
Tumblr media
Later in the series, we notice that Jun is really starting to see Tomo as a girl and question little bits of their relationship. In fact, in the first episode when Tomo confessed, he thought it really could mean an actual confession. We even got flashbacks throughout the series with how these two really were. And yes, Jun really was that fucking stupid and didn’t know Tomo was a girl until much later. But that’s when he started to feel something there.
Tumblr media
I’m sure you’re waiting for me to mention Carol and Kousuke since there was a very powerful episode that involved some revelations and “I love yous”. But um, I think everyone here is forgetting some important matter to this cutesy crap.
They are cousins.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, the Misuzu debacle. She just used Jun to further her own advances of getting him together with Tomo. And Jun kinda did the same thing. The whole thing ended in less than two days and their relationship hasn’t been pleasant from that day forward.
Tumblr media
ENDING: There has been some turmoil between Misuzu, Tomo, and Jun. Misuzu has been feeling guilty about all her advances of girling Tomo up in order to win Jun’s heart. Misuzu ends up distancing herself away from Tomo, but Tomo still lures her back with her forgiving nature. Now comes the Tomo x Jun dilemma. Tomo likes Jun and has been dropping hints at him throughout the majority of this series. Jun likes Tomo and the feeling has been blooming in him for quite a while. Things finally erupted when Jun admits he likes Tomo. But then he also revealed about playing it off when Tomo first declared her feelings in episode 1. So, things didn’t go that well if you’ve got Tomo calling Jun an idiot after he says “I like you”.
Tumblr media
The two eventually have a long talk. They both really like each other. But Tomo has been thinking this through more than Jun. If they go into a relationship, everything changes. And depending on how things end up it can be either successful or will destroy the relationship they already have. But Jun wants Tomo as a buddy, a bro, and a girlfriend. They even go on a date to the movies. Unfortunately, another wall stands in their way to a happy romance. That wall is Tomo’s dad. He refuses Jun to be her boyfriend unless Jun faces and wins a match against him.
Tumblr media
Tomo did not take this well. Jun of course was very worried as he knows he’s not going to win this one. Tomo’s dad is like Bluto in a judo uniform. Regardless of the situation he’s in, Jun is going to go for it. The end result, Jun was actually able to put a dent in Tomo’s dad and was able to make his hands hit the ground for a brief sec. Guess that’s a W here. Tomo x Jun is a go and this ship has sailed.
Unless of course we get a second season and we get a secret lover of some sort?!
No? Okay. Still a great 13 episodes though. Yes, this was a very cute high school romcom. Literally, all of the characters were likeable. Even ones that are rarely in it like the parents. Seriously, Carol, Tomo, and Misuzu’s mothers are something else. With everything that has happened in these 13 episodes, do we even need a second season? The manga is over and with only 50+ chapters, I don’t know. Manga readers, did they cover everything here? Is there any more material to make a second season, movie, or special? I know Tomo and Jun are together. And Carol even got a chance at love. But Misuzu seems to be left out. Is she going to remain the status quo or will she eventually end up with that twank that’s been following her since the beginning? I forget his name. I’ll call him a twank. I personally would rather keep this anime at one season. I wouldn’t mind a special episode in the future, but best to leave things as they are. Any high school romcom fans, come over here. I approve.
If you would like to watch Tomo-chan is a Girl, Crunchyroll has this available in several languages.

Imagine Anna wanting to go trick-or-treating with everyone else. How do you think they would react to the idea and how do you think everyone would dress up?
Oh, this is such a cute ask! Thanks so much for sending it in and I hope you'll enjoy the headcanons!
Okay, but I can definitely see this being a thing. I don't really think Halloween is celebrated in the same way in Japan but we're going to set aside cultural differences for this ask and use more Western standards of Halloween, like trick or treating so please don't come for me haha.
Now, Anna has obviously never been trick or treating in her life, given her past and then coming to HOMRA, where trick or treating takes second place to drinking and partying on Halloween. So when she hears about the custom, it really intrigues her and she does kind of want to do it. It takes her a couple of weeks though to really get her mind made up enough and to feel confident enough to go and tell someone how much she wants to try it out.
Of course, everyone is kind of supportive of Anna getting to experience it and they'll all kind of help in their own ways. Izumo does have to stay at the bar, or so he declares, so he offers to help Anna shop for her costume but does beg out of actually taking her out. Both him and Totsuka (I'll setting this before he dies, for once) agree that Mikoto is too intimidating to take Anna out trick or treating…he'd scare everyone answering the door and there's worries Anna would end up with no candy and a less than ideal Halloween experience so it's decided he'll stay at the bar with Kusanagi, something Mikoto isn't exactly fighting against.
However, it is Halloween night, there's a lot of mischief and parties and just tomfoolery going on and there's some worry that, while everyone knows Totsuka is more than capable, maybe it's not the best idea that just the two of them goes. So Kusanagi voluntells everyone else in the main part of the HOMRA gang to take her out and also voluntells them that they're getting dressed up to do so, to make Anna's Halloween the best it can be.
There is a lot of fighting around this and some members might not have walked out of that fighting without some new bumps and scrapes.
Totsuka is all in though. He helps shop for Anna's costume and she goes as a princess, because she is the princess of HOMRA, and they spend far too much to get her the absolute top of the line princess costume…she demands they buy her a prop sword as well though because she wants to be a warrior princess.
Totsuka himself goes as a zombie and he had actually gone through a spell where he got really into special effects makeup and prosthetics so he's actually really excited to whip those skills back out. He looks surprisingly horrifying and he has fun helping out anyone else who needs him with their costumes. Totsuka still would have come as a zombie even if this had been set post death because I have a warped sense of humour.
Shouhei doesn't really fight the idea much. If they take Anna out early enough, he's more than okay with it. In fact, he's a little excited to be able to go out trick or treating again, because he was definitely one of those people who trick or treated until they started getting refused candy for being too old. He's even okay with dressing up because he was going to dress up for a Halloween party he was going to later on that night anyway. He just makes it very clear that he has to leave by a certain time…there's about three or four parties he's already agreed to make an appearance at so it's going to be a busy night for him. He had planned on just dressing up like a 50's greaser or a biker, but he lets Anna choose his costume for him and she dresses him as a pirate. He's not honestly all that disappointed as it's a pretty sweet costume.
Bandou, on the other hand? He was definitely one of the people who fought the decision. He's way too old to be out trick or treating, even just taking someone else out trick or treating, and the very idea embarrasses him. Besides, there's this online game he plays that has this huge event going on just on Halloween night and he can't miss out on all that special, one of a kind loot and skins and such. He's scowling until he starts getting free candy and then all of a sudden warms up to the occassion. He claims to be dressed up as a 'rapper' but honestly, he's just wearing his normal clothes with the only addition being the gaudiest, biggest, flashiest chains he could find.
Chitose had to be dragged along, and was the one who fought it the hardest. Do you know how many slutty nurses and Halloween cat costumes he's missing doing this?? He dresses as a 'serial killer', which is just his normal clothes and a big ass (supposedly fake) knife because all serial killers pretty much look like normal people. Or at least that's his excuse. It surprises no one when only a couple blocks in, they take Anna up to the door and come back to find Chitose has just kind of disappeared.
Dewa is the only one to actually win the fight to not go…and it's only because his excuse of having a shift at his part time job that night was proven to be legit when Kusanagi checked it out. He pretends to be very sad he'll miss the occasion and says he wishes he could be there to see Anna enjoy her Halloween…word he regrets as Totsuka took him seriously and sends him pictures and videos throughout the night. Most of the other boys follow Totsuka's lead, some out of pure spite for Dewa's 'good luck', and Dewa is driven half crazy until he just turns off his phone.
Eric has never experienced trick or treating or really Halloween in general so he's a little confused at first. It becomes the goal of certain members to make sure that, since this is Eric and Anna's first Halloween experience, it be the most amazing one for the both of them. He gets bought a knight costume and happily plays Anna's knight for the evening and is surprised by just how many houses insist on giving him candy too despite him not being a little kid. All in all, he has a lot more fun than his complaining and swearing lets on.
Fujishima really didn't care one way or another. I headcanon him as having younger neighbours that he got asked to take out trick-or-treating once he reached middle school and stopped going out himself so this is kind of routine and common for him. He dresses up like a dog. Legit, he wears a full on mascot suit that is definitely not a fursuit (if he was to have a fursona, it would not be a dog, thank you very much). He makes sure to say thank you to everyone who gives him candy and makes sure the others do as well.
Yata pretended to hate the order to take Anna out but honestly, he's a little excited to go trick-or-treating again. Plus he gets to play protector for Anna for the evening as Kusanagi and Totsuka point out to him and he feels very proud to be trusted that much with Homra's princess. He puts a lot of work into his costume, choosing to go as Tony Hawk…nobody gets it and he gets the least amount of candy behind Chitose and Bandou.
Kamamoto is so in. Everyone deserves a night of free candy when they're young. He has so many fond memories of trick or treating himself and he definitely does everything he can to make the night the best. He's also the only one to think to bring along extra pillowcases so that they all can continue to trick or treat after their buckets get full. Due to all the community connections he has, he also kind of snoops out ahead of time which neighbourhoods are going to be giving out the best candy and makes sure that Anna gets to hit all of those. He doesn't really go overboard on his costume - there's not a lot of options for plus size male costumes honestly, and he just kind of cobbles together a hobo outfit for Halloween.

managers? managers. let's go!!
(aka kennedy made an excellent excellent post and i realized I WAS PART OF THE PROBLEM so now we have miyagi manager headcanons bc i don't do nearly enough for them . . . also have a healthy side of runayachi)
runa feels like soft synth pop and slow sweet indie music and makes playlists to show her love, so while yachi definitely does not understand the significance of getting a playlist from her the rest of johzenji does!!
she's in charge of the aux cord when they hit the road for games and the team always has the best time jamming out together even if they have no volume control and annoy every car within a five mile radius
(also if you remember my post where higashi and narita bond over playlists? this is totally where higashi gets it from)
speaking of which i think yachi is pretty oblivious when it comes to someone actively trying to flirt with her, especially if it's not in a way she recognizes from shoujo manga LMAAAO
it's because she always thought she was in the background!!! character b!!!! a tree!!! she doesn't think that stuff would happen to her!!! she reads high school romance manga and recognizes the obvious stuff when it happens (i.e. hinata grabbing her hand and pulling her through the city on a mad dash) but it's a SURPRISE bc why would it happen to HER!!!! she doesn't think anyone would be interested in her enough, and definitely would not flirt in ways she's not familiar with!!!
so basically runa is in for a hell of a time trying to show yachi she likes her without saying it
runa got convinced to sign up as team manager when misaki caught her crouching outside the gym one day bc she was trying to figure out a way to repay jiri and higashi for helping her catch her dog when he'd gotten loose during a walk the other day
otherwise runa would be in the music club with her mad piano/keyboard skills
sometimes misaki wonders if she took something away from runa because runa really is talented and would probably thrive in music club and she always seems so anxious with the team (they can be a bit much, she knows) and she tells runa that it's okay for her to leave not knowing that it would break her entire heart
is runa not wanted??? did she do something wrong??? did they not like her??? but she thought she was getting along so well with them, she really considered them her friends . . .
anyways everyone barely lasts two days before they're clamoring to get runa back and it turns into a whole messy thing where runa keeps avoiding them bc seeing them hang out without her makes her sad so it becomes a game of "who the hell can get runa to stay still and let us talk"
in the end it's jiri (FULL CIRCLE!!!) who manages to get her to listen and there's a lot of tears and snot and hugs from everyone all around
nametsu kicks ass in competitive pokemon battling. i don't even know how it works myself i just know she would
she'd really like to design/code her own game someday and have her own game development studio!!! her notebooks are full of little doodles and sketches of all her ideas
(i am still so salty we never got a timeskip appearance for her)
through the power of 'everyone is following everyone in the high school boys' volleyball circuit' nametsu gets hooked up with kenma and he becomes her number one beta tester and gamer nerd friend
she's a big fan of visual novels and mmorpgs and ropes futakuchi, aone, onagawa, and obara into playing with her
okay yeah kogane and sakunami too
(she tried with the third years, but moniwa is for some reason terrible with technology, kamasaki keeps trying to fight things like 20 levels higher than him and dies without ever improving, and sasaya just likes collecting things to cook with)
also i DO think nametsu actually grows pretty close to runa and yachi and keeps an eye out for them because as much as yachi and runa admired kiyoko and misaki they were third years with their shit (relatively) together as the third years tended to be, whereas nametsu is a hot mess second year figuring things out (which makes her less scary) but still has the experience that lets runa and yachi see her as some sort of authority even if it's just by a year
tl;dr nametsu is more approachable as a second year so she, yachi, and runa actually develop more of a friendship where neither yachi or runa are tripping over their tongues all the time
also!!! childhood best friends with futakuchi!!!!
i like to think that nametsu and futakuchi met aone in middle school and they took him under their wing, which means aone's social buffs were futakuchi being a little bitch and nametsu being a little bitch in a completely opposite way
in nametsu's first year she got insecure bc she didn't know if the team saw her as "aone's and futakuchi's friend" and only talked to her because of that or if they cared about her as a person individually and she was too afraid to ask
but they did!!!!! onagawa always walked partway home with her even after they left futakuchi and aone, obara always wanted her opinion on pc mods and games and whatever, moniwa always asked to go out to coffee shops and hang out . . . and so on and so forth
nametsu didn't really believe it until they all pitched in to throw her a surprise birthday party and the cake was her favorite flavor (chocolate orange) and futakuchi was like "yeah i put onagawa and obara in charge of that and didn't really tell them to do much other than don't fuck it up" which meant. they LISTENED to her and they cared enough to know her favorite flavor and to even decorate it with a stupid coding joke and and and -
she almost burst out into tears right then and there
it was okay, though. they ended up having a lot of fun!
(even if they almost committed arson trying to light up the candles)
