When you write fics, especially AU ones without much connection to canon, what do you do about the characters's voices? As an example, in Four Years, does Kou have the same voice he does in Tri/Kizuna due to him being a similar age, or do you imagine a different voice for him?

THIS IS.  SUCH AN INTERESTING Q.  And my answer got really long and meandering, so I’mma toss it beneath the cut.

I find it terribly difficult to describe how voices sound.  You can give a general idea with words like: rough, nasal, warm, sweet, high pitched, low pitched, smooth, grating.  But unless you point to a particular actor/singer/well known voice and say, “She sounds like that!,” everyone is going to assemble a different voice for the character in their heads.  Which is really cool to imagine!

I will say that for Four Years, you should think of the English dub voices from Adventure/02 and feel free to make any tweaks your heart desires (presumably, they’d sound older, as they are college age in the AU).  I describe Izzy in FY as sounding nasal or tinny, which is pretty harsh, lol!  But I tend to use words like calm, detached, and crisp for his voice in the other stories, where he is loosely meant to sound like the Japanese voice actresses.  There’s always a suggestion that he sounds a bit feminine, which is a nod to the fact that he’s voiced by women in both the Japanese and English.  But Koushiro has had at least two Japanese voice actresses (one for Adventure and 02, one for Tri/Kizuna, I did not check for the various movies and drama CDs), so again- do you imagine his Adventure voice “aged up,” or do you swap to his Tri/Kizuna voice?  What about Seeking Resonance, where the characters are roughly late twenties/early thirties?

Part of the magic of writing is that you are basically...  You’re basically functioning as a telepath!  You suggest sensory input to your readers.  No matter how skilled you are as a writer, there will always be a gap between what you imagined while writing and what your reader imagines while reading.  For example, I don’t imagine anime style visuals while I write; I’m thinking of the cast translated into “live action.”  But my guess is that most readers are picturing episodes of the anime following my described situation, more or less, because...  That’s what we know!

So like- you want to be descriptive, but don’t stress over exactly how characters look or sound.  It’s impossible to broadcast those things precisely in this medium.  And the freedom to interpret and imagine is something readers love!  So as a reader, don’t stress about matching your vision to mine.

Oh!  And for writers, delivery tends to be easier to describe than the exact sound of the voice.  My Koushiro/Izzy is usually meant to be speaking calmly, evenly, without a ton of inflection or emotion.  When he’s described as sounding emotional, that’s when you know this shit be gettin’ real for him.  Contrast with Mimi, who speaks energetically, with lots of inflection, or Eimi, who is described as having tight control on her emotional delivery- until she doesn’t, which, again, means the shit be real.  My opinion is that how they speak is a far more powerful tool for a writer than what they sound like.

(I don’t know if you’re a writer or not, so I beg your pardon if I’m flapping my gums too much over this, lol!).  THIS WAS A COOL QUESTION THANK YOU!

I had written almost 4 thousand words of chapter 36 of tsol but I was feeling realy unsatisfied with it. So, I decided to start over and try something new. So far, I’m enjoying writing the new version way more. It’s the first big experimental chapter since chapter 17.

In case of curiosity, you can peek at the opening of this upcoming chapter:

He had welcomed Izumi Koushiro in that room many times after the boy’s death. His other self woke up on that chair across from his; the table between them was covered by a white sheet and had two cups of their favorite tea on it. None of those other Koushiros drank from that tea, which was probably for the best. He couldn’t reproduce its taste, as most of his sensory memories had vanished long ago.

But before him that day was someone else.

The visitor woke up, but couldn’t emit any sound, lifted the head, but couldn’t move the rest of the body.

The empty dark room had only one light, which came directly from above the table. He couldn’t tell whether the place was cold or hot. The fact that the other was sweating and shaking at the same time didn’t provide satisfactory clues.

“I’ll bring you back to normal soon.” He promised. “I have little time and much to tell, but I know that the main question in your mind might distract you, so I’ll just address it right away: I look like the chosen child you known as Izumi Koushiro because I am him. I’m a version from a different universe, but still him.”

Not long ago, acknowledging such truth would’ve been maddening. But he couldn’t keep running from it after the confrontation with his other self.

“I’ve been given several names.” He continued. “Before developing my programming, Wisemon studied similar entities from universes he had visited and named me ‘Homeostasis,’ after one of them. His plan was to surpass the power of those entities and create something unstoppable. In the Digital World you’ve known, I’m mostly referred to as ‘Fate’ and ‘Spirit of the World.’ But none of that is really important regarding the theogony I’m about to address.”

The other blinked, seemingly confused. The space around them  briefly warped the light above flickered. It wouldn’t take too long; he had to hurry.

“Pay attention now. I will tell you a story.”

Chapter 36: Hikari’s fate

Can I say as a diagnosed autistic w/major sensory issues I'm actually kind of surprised people are taking Yamato to be autistic? (Not that it matters much since we all relate differently?) but I always found Koushiro to be MUCH more likely to be on the autistic spectrum because of his high interest in computing and everything related to knowledge. Iirc it was actually a pretty big theory back in the day (when people theorized about disabilities the kids could have had) that Koushiro is autistic!

(Adding to the last ask - Considering his issues, I would personally think Yamato to be much more AVP or even BPD! “Stimming” isn’t just related to autism; it can happen with those too, as a result of high anxiety. Actually, it’d be really interesting to see Yamato characterized with either condition, I think? I just also always saw Yamato’s interest in music as a general hobby more than an intensely hyperfocused ‘special interest’ like what I have but maybe that’s just me?)

Well, I just realised I made a mistake by reblogging that post, since my non-English-speaking brain didn’t realize what stimming actually means and I had no idea it was connected to autism (Hey, it was late at night! It happens!). I just assumed the post was about Yamato – a musician – practicing his bass skills when he’s nervous. Hence why I topped it with a joke about bass players (whose unfair status as the “losers” of rock&roll is only surpassed by drummers). 

I’m just going on the record to say I’m generally very uncomfortable with people diagnosing fictional characters with autism or serious mental illnesses when there’s nothing in canon to suggest it, because I’m always afraid as it coming across as trivializing or fetichizing serious issues. I mean, everyone can do what they like, it’s just not something I want to do, ever.

So I have no opinion about this matter. At all.

“OK. So you’re not the bad guys.” - Hikari (Note: This is related on more precisely quite a bit more in the Novel, as well as various interviews, which I will also comment on later.)

“Hikari!” - Tailmon, as Koushiro also runs up after her; as if to try and reach her before she’s taken, (along with Tailmon) but Koushiro gets caught up (faster than the rest) TOO...

“Wherever there is LIGHT, naturally there will ALSO be {Darkness}.”

“{Darkness} and LIGHT are LIKE TWO SIDES of THE SAME Coin.”

Digi-Advs A.M.V. Timeline for A.M.V. ~ “robot” boy featuring : KouTai{shiro} [Koushiro x Taichi] + 2020!KouTai{shiro}, (also) Yamato as support with {a side of possible YamaKouTai as polyship and/or friendship} (includes bits from all series; Adventure, 02, tri., Kizuna, and 2020)

This A.M.V. has 115~ edited clips (the last couple have audio so I’m not including them specifically, but) Any clip with a square of boxes in corner has an effect on. Some clips get weirdly corrupted if you edit them too long/much or clip them at a certain timeframe, don’t ask me “why” but they make keeping track of the timeline hard sometimes if there’s a lot of them.

A.K.A. Yes, I’m Still Using Windows Movie Maker in 2k22. I have another editor for a few effects if I need them but the timeline’s cursor/marker (?) blinks/flashes and it’s not easy on my eyes with sensory issues and such, and absolutely no way to turn that off? so this will have to do!

Everything from the last 4 rows onward was edited in a new file, copied, and pasted into the completed timeline as I hoped for this thing to not crash on me because typically by anywhere from 20~50 clips it WILL Crash On You if you edit too much

It’s technically not actually completed I wanted to add a bit more in but The Crashing TM had already begun so we’ll see if it’s even done by August 1st?!?

Time spent: 10~ hours over a period of 18 days since the start of the month (A.K.A.: Please respect A.M.V. makers too. A.M.V. Making Is Hard)

Koushiro and Eimi going to a casino what happens?

OH MAN HOW FUN AHHH!!!  Thanks for the ask, more below the cut (it’s more like “Everyone and Eimi goes to a casino,” hope that’s okay!  Also, please don’t take this seriously, lol, I’m just messing around). 

Taichi and the others must have dragged them along, because they’re reluctant to be there.  I don’t know if you’ve been to a casino, but it’s SENSORY OVERLOAD, at least for an introvert with a low tolerance for stimulus.  Lights blink and flash in all directions, slot machines play jingles, chips rattle and clink, and patrons talk, laugh, and curse.  And while Koushiro might find some of the card games intriguing, Eimi is a play-it-safe person with zero interest in gambling.  

Taichi lures Eimi in by promising to treat her to a magic show, and neither of them want to miss out on a group outing with the Chosen, so…  They go. 

Koushiro finds the new environment interesting, but Eimi shrinks back from the noise and the crowd (“And what are those show girls wearing?!  ARE THEY WORKING THE FLOOR AND SERVING DRINKS LIKE THAT?!  STOP STARING, TAKERU, YOU’RE TOO YOUNG!  IS HE EVEN ALLOWED IN HERE?!  WHERE’S IORI, IORI DON’T-”  “Eimi-san, I’m twenty-three…”).  Mimi tries to help her calm down in her… Mimi way, and soon, she’s somehow procured show girl outfits and is trying to convince the girls to wear them.  This, ah, doesn’t help. 

Koushiro redirects by asking Eimi to accompany him to the blackjack table.  His goal is to encourage her to focus on learning the rules, but curiously, he wins his first hand…  Then the next…  Then the next…  And the next!  It turns out that he can easily count cards, and soon, Eimi is too impressed and proud to notice everything that was bothering her.

Koushiro uses his winnings to pay for dinner, and to treat everyone to the magic show that Taichi promised Eimi, but mysteriously forgot about.  Jyou ends up hypnotized onstage and is made to impersonate a chicken.  It is marvelous.

Takeru probably hooks up with at least one show girl.  This, too, is marvelous.

Mimi convinces Meiko to wear the show girl outfit with her.  This, too, is marvelous!
