⛸️ Yuri!!! On ICE Review! 🏳️🌈
Hello! Welcome to a new anime review, everyone! In this one, I'll review a classic among the classics: Yuri!!! On ICE!
Before we begin, I'd like to ask any homophobe reading this to brace themselves, as this will probably hurt their fragile ego. Also, please do not be homophobic; thank you :)
Now, Yuri!!! On ICE aired in 2016 and has twelve episodes. As you may have surmised, it deals with ice skating with a romantic subtext. Surprisingly, it's a very mature anime that will resonate more with adults than kids!
To start, I have to point out that this anime has some vibes that remind me of my favorite anime, Your Lie In April. That, in and of itself, makes for a strength in my book. It's also somewhat similar to Free! if some of you have watched this series.
The plot is a mere character development device, so I won't write an essay about it. It does its job and does it well, even if it's fast-paced.
Ah, the cast... well, it's very gay. I think that sums it up quite well. More seriously, it's got a decent cast with a good duo of main characters and an okay third wheel. The side cast is hit-or-miss, with one a-hole and some pretty cool characters. But yeah, very gay.
The main strength of Yuri!!! On ICE is its character dynamics. It's a short anime but has excellent character dynamics. It has some romantic, sensual, and even sexual vibes that separate it from the rest. It's nothing NSFW, but pretty unusual nonetheless.
The focus on the leading duo shows the story's maturity, although I'll admit I didn't like the dynamics with the third MC quite as much. It's minor, though, and doesn't hurt the experience much.
Yuuri, the protagonist, is a sort of Kousei Arima with Shinichi Izumi's character design. I think there was room to improve his character (his humor, especially), but he's a good protag.
Victor, the second member of the leading duo, is also a good character with fewer flaws than Yuuri, in my opinion. His character was more complete, to begin with, so I suppose it was easier. They make for an adorable duo, though, no questions asked.
Damn, this anime's got good music. Of course, ice skating relies heavily on music, so it makes total sense, but still. Big YLIA vibes here with some classical pieces.
THE OPENING. History Maker, by Dean Fujioka, is one of the best openings I've ever heard. Possibly the most fitting of its anime, too. It falls really short of my top five, honestly. I'll be listening to it a lot in the near future, that's for sure.
Visually, Yuri!!! On ICE has good animation and decent art. It was actually made by MAPPA, which surprised me when I saw it since they're usually known for their shonen anime (JJK, CSM, AOT Last Season...).
Overall, this anime is an experience. It's nowhere near my favorite anime or even my top ten, but it's intriguing, to be sure. I would recommend it!
Down below is the tierlist for the characters in this anime!
...I'm just kidding, haha. But, honestly, this might be the most realistic tierlist you'll find for this anime. More seriously, down below is the true tierlist. Thank you for reading this review!

February 14th. The day of baby Cupid. The day of sweets. The day of pointless letters and love confessions. At least, that’s what the day was for Kousei Arima. He had never been fond of the holiday, opting to shut himself inside the room where the piano resided.
His mindset was challenged when Kaori Miyazono entered his life. She was the one who challenged… everything for him.
-
“C’mon, Kousei. You can at least go out with us.” Watari said, knocking on the bespectacled boy’s front door.
Kousei’s two best friends had decided to play Cupid, hoping that getting Kousei and Kaori together on Valentine’s Day would be the ticket.
“Not feeling good, come back tomorrow.” He replied while laying under the piano.
“That’s a load of nonsense!” Watari yelled with annoyance in his tone, “Just come outside! We want to go to the bakery!”
“No! I don’t wanna see all the stupid lovey-dovey couples!”
“I’ll buy your lunch!” Tsubaki beamed from Watari’s side.
Within a few moments, the door unlocked and the two friends were met with a very scraggly looking Kousei.
“Depends where we’re going. You know how I feel about you spending money on me.”
With great convincing, Kousei and friends took route to the bakery that Kaori’s family owned. The black-haired boy had changed into… decent clothing and combed his hair.
Upon the three’s arrival, they were graciously greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Miyazono.
“Ah! My goodness, welcome welcome! Kaori is just upstairs.” The blonde girl’s father chimed.
“Thank you for the welcome, sir.” Kousei replied with a light bow.
As if on cue from her name, Kaori excitedly ran down the stairs, pulling all three friends into a big hug.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!” She cried, handing them each a box of chocolates and a letter.
While Watari and Tsubaki instantly tore into their treat, Kousei examined it in his hands. His expression was unreadable, but he definitely had some thoughts in his head.
“Y’know, if you hate chocolates so much, I can get you some canelés instead.” Kaori said sheepishly.
“Oh! Uh, no these are great. Thanks…”
After lunch, Kousei made the mistake to invite his friends back over to hang out. Naturally, they agreed. So, there they sat in front of the tv. Three on the couch, and Kousei barely on the cushion, with his legs across their laps.
“You look… comfortable.” Watari noted, biting back a chuckle.
“Aha ha. You’re a funny guy.” The piano player bit back sarcastically.
“I know! I’m so good at making people laugh. Especially you, Kousei!” To accompany his message, and to prove his point, the brunette traced a finger around the ball of Kousei’s foot.
“Hehehey!” The black-haired boy yelped while recoiling it
The violin player took notice of the boy’s response. Interesting…
“See! I’m good at making you laugh!” Watari chimed.
“Yeah, not from your humor.” Kousei murmured with an eye roll.
“Man.” Kaori piped up, “What’s got you so prickly today?”
“I don’t know, I just-“
“He hates Valentine’s Day.”
All eyes fell onto Tsubaki, who seemed very nonchalant about the message she had just relayed.
“Tsubakiiiii.” Kousei whined, “You can’t just tell her that!”
“Why not? It’s true isn’t it? It’ll get out at some point.” She replied, biting the inside of her cheek.
“Tsub-“
“Well now you have to tell me why you hate it.” The blonde girl noted.
“What? No way! I don’t share that info with anyone!”
“Oh reaaaally?” Kaori teased, “You sure you won’t tell me?”
“Lips are sealed!”
“Bummer.” She feigned innocence, “Even if I were to… force it out of you…?” She accompanied her message with a squeeze to the boy’s knee.
Kousei gasped, “You wouldn’t dare.”
Oh yes, she would dare. Kaori happily squeezed Kousei’s knee cap for about two minutes. “C‘Mon, Friend A. You’ll have to tell me eventually!”
“Nohohoho! Ihihihits prihihivahahatehehe!” The piano player whined, desperately trying to keep from squirming and disturbing his friends.
Said friends didn’t mind it at all. It had been a while since Kousei had really let loose and has fun, so they did their fair share to help. “Kao’ Kao’. Try another spot.” Watari beamed.
“Nohohoho yohohou trahahaitohohor!” Kousei squeezed an eye shut to try and maintain composure as Kaori begin to prod at his hipbones.
“Kooouseeii~” she cooed, “Tell me your secret!”
“Mhmhmhm mhmhmhmnn!” Poor Kousei was giggling like crazy. Due to his butt barely being on the couch, he had nowhere to run and no way to move. The poor soul could only cover his mouth as helpless giggles poured out. “Kahahaohohorihihi! Wahahahait! Plehehehehease Stahahahap!”
She immediately ceased, “You alright, Friend A?”
Kousei’s face reddened. “I y-yeah. I-I just feel uh. Um… a little t-trapped. That’s uh. T-That’s all.”
“Aww after all these years, this is still your favorite game!” Tsubaki cooed out of the sweetness.
“Tsubaki!” Kousei hissed, face growing even more scarlet.
The blonde girl helped her partner to get unstuck from his spot in the couch, sitting him in between her and Watari. “This better?”
The piano player wiggled a bit, “Much.”
“Okay, great!”
Instantly, she was back on the hunt. “Y’know, you can avoid this whole ordeal if you just tell me what’s wrong!”
Kousei threw his head back onto the cushion behind him, “Nohohoho! Ihihihits ehehembahaharahahassihihing!”
“More embarrassing than admitting you’re actually having fun?” Another voice chimed.
“Wahahataharihihi! Dohohont sahahahay thahahat!” The black-haired boy whined, throwing an arm over his eyes.
“This isn’t working! Where else can I go?!” Kaori chirped.
Watari held his own arm up, poking two fingers into his own ribs. “Here.” He mouthed.
The violin player took notice of how light his touch was, not wanting to hurt her friend and partner. She gentle wiggled her fingers in Kousei’s ribs, watching his eyes widen and him throw his hands over his face.
“Agh! Cmohohohon Kahahaohohorihihi! Thihihis -IHIHISNT FAHAHAIR!”
Kousei’s entire demeanor had changed when his partner had inched her hands downward toward his stomach.
“Ooooh! Did I find a good spot?” She teased, slowly ghosting her fingers above the spot.
“Nohohoho! Nohohohot ahahahat ahahall!” The anticipation was making Kousei giggle madly again. He just had to lie to her and- “ACK- KAHAHAOHOHORIHIHI! NOHOHOHO!”
Well, that didn’t work.
The blonde girl happily began to gently claw at the boy’s stomach. She cheerfully asked him: “So, what’s your secret?”
“YOHOHOU- AHAHAHA! YOHOHOU CAHAHANT DOHOHOHO THIHIHIS!” The black-haired boy threw his hands over his face and squealed into them as Kaori’s light scribbled turned into squeezes.
“This can all end if you just tell me!”
“NOHOHOHO!”
“Fine, your funeral.” Kaori chimed, bringing her hands close to his belly button. She squeezed gently, but with enough purpose to get her message across.
Ah, poor Kousei lost it. “HNGH- OHOHOKAHAHAY! OKAHAHAHAY! IHIHI’LL TEHEHELL YOHOHOU!”
The violin player gently squeezed the area to get Kousei down from the high, “I knew I could get you, Friend A.”
With a sudden sheepishness in his person, Kousei prepared to tell his friends. It was stupid, why was he nervous? Kaori had just embarrassed him in front of Watari and Tsubaki so… why was this any different?
“I don’t like Valentine’s Day because…”
Three pairs of eyes fell on the blushing boy.
“I’ve never gotten a valentine before…” he murmured, hiding his head in his hands. He curled up into a ball and hid under his hands.
“Wait what? I didn’t hear you?” Watari asked with furrowed brows, leaning closer to his friend.
“I’ve never…” he mumbled, “I’ve never- Ah! Kahahahaohohorihihihi!”
The blonde girl had gently squeezed at the boy’s sides, hoping to un-turtle him.
She was successful, and Kousei looked at all of his friends. He took a deep breath, “I’ve never gotten a valentine before... at least until today.”
“Oh. That’s it?” Tsubaki asked softly, taking the black-haired boy’s hand. “If I knew that, I would’ve brought you an entire box of valentines.”
“Oh I get it!” Kaori chirped, “That must’ve been why you were so antsy when I gave you the chocolates and the letter!”
“Yeah…” he trailed off.
“Well! There’s no need to be sad! You haven’t opened your letter yet, and you have a whole box of chocolates proving that we like you!” The blonde girl chimed.
“Should I open it now?” He asked softly.
“You can.” Kaori replied, “But you may want to open it in private. I don’t know if you’re a crier or not.”
“Hey!” The black-haired boy yelped with a grin. “ I am not!”
“Oh you totally are.” Tsubaki said with a smile and furrowed brows.
“Oh yeah, 100%, man.” Watari teased.
“Rude!” Kousei whined.
When all of his friends had went home, Kousei decided to open the letter that Kaori had written for him. He gently nibbled on a piece of chocolate with strawberry filling as he held the piece of paper between two fingers.
“Dear Friend A,
What a crazy year it’s been! I’ve never felt more welcomed in a new place in my entire life! My family moved a lot when I was younger, so I was finally happy to settle here in Japan. I wasn’t expecting to make so many friends this quickly. But, what really made me happy was meeting you. I’m so happy that you’re playing piano again, and I’m even more thrilled that you’re doing it alongside me! Thank you for always being my adventures guy, my canelés guy, my café guy. Thank you for being my guy. Here’s to this year and many more. Here’s to you: my partner, my Friend A, my Kousei.
With love,
Kaori.”
