When I was still little, I couldn’t understand the words that Mom had suddenly said that day.

If Mom is gonna become Dad… then what’s Dad gonna be?

I have a faint memory of thinking something along those lines.

When I came to understand that Dad wasn’t coming back home anymore, one month had passed since my mom’s statement that she would become Dad.

Dad would often spend a lot of nights away from home, but even then, he had never been away for a month without coming back.

At that moment, little me finally understood what Mom had been trying to say.

Thinking back on it now, if at that time I had acted like a kid who didn’t understand anything, Mom’s attitude towards me might have been a little different.

My life started to change the day I came to the realization that Dad wasn’t coming back.

“Reiji, your responsibilities will start with washing the dishes.”

“... What are ‘responsibilities’?”

“Being in charge of helping. We’ll start by getting you used to the kitchen.”

It wasn’t as if I hadn’t helped at all up until then.

But it felt like that time was different, so of course, I couldn’t help but be confused.

I would also be forced to give up what free time I had to read the manga I loved so much.

Before I realized, a large frame bearing the family precept had been placed in the living room.

My aunt, as the cashier, called out to the kitchen from the storefront.

Even though I was only a primary school student, I had already become an indispensable powerhouse for Kotobuki Bento.

When I lowered the karaage into the oil, I’d quickly pack the rice and stuff the side dishes while it was frying.

Naturally, seasoning and preparation were Mom and Big Sis’ jobs, but somehow it got to the point that I would know when the karaage was fried just right.

“Wait, Reiji. How many times have I told you to leave the rice scoop in water after you use it?!”

“Ah, I’m sorry!”

Whenever I was careless, Big Sis’ harsh voice would pierce through me like bullets, but that never discouraged me at all.

After all, “those who do not help shall not eat." Even if I came home from school with a rumbling tummy…

“Aaah~ I’m so hungry~ Mom, what’s for dinner todaaay?”

“Oh, you’ve arrived just in time. I have to leave for a meeting for a bit, so make it yourself, okay?”

“Whaaat?! You’re just gonna neglect your hungry son and leave?!”

“Those who do not help...?”

“... shall not eat, right.”

Thus, I learned to cook pretty well.

And not only that—when I grew a little bigger, that also gave me trouble.

“Oh, Reiji, go buy some rice. Five kilos, okay?”

“Oh, sake too. The usual cooking sake.”

“Oh, sorry Rei-chan, but the soy sauce is running out. Get the big value one, you know the one, right?”

“Mom, Sis, Auntie. Isn’t all of that too heavy to bring at once even for a man?!”

“Awww, it’s okay~ You’ve grown so big, Rei-chan.”

Bam, my part-timer auntie slapped my back with full-force.

Just how are the Kotobuki women so strong?

“Okay, I understand! Well~ if I take my bicycle, it’ll be fine!”

“Also, bring oil please!”

Big Sis, are you a demon?

Thanks to that, cooking, cleaning, and laundry don’t pose a problem for me. But... sometimes I think that I started being called a jack of all trades later on because of the way I was brought up too.

“What a cruel story, don’t you think?”

“Maybe it’s nothing to laugh at, but your family seems like fun.”

Kouhai-chan was listening to my story attentively.

“Same with Saotome Academy—before long, Mom made a second precept. She told me ‘Those who do not make money, shall not eat, so carry out the plan,’ and so I had no choice but to enroll, you see.”

“You have a very strong mother.”

“Yeah. Well, she was doing the role of both parents.”

“It’s your typical matrilineal family. Maybe that’s the reason I’m weak to women…”

“You are… weak?”

Kouhai-chan blinks her eyes rapidly. She looks a bit like a little bird; it’s so cute.

“I’m weak! I can’t say no if a woman asks something of me.”

“As expected, Kotobuki-senpai is so kind.”

“And if a woman said she liked me, I’d do anything for her.”

That’s right, I’d do everything and anything...

If there was a girl who could open the door to my heart.

I mutter that in my mind.

Nobody expected Magnolia to heal straight away after the Alvarez War. The city had gone through a trauma and just as the case was with any trauma, it wasn't the right approach to just ignore it and stuff it down. You could repair the cracks and pretend it was nothing but a bad winter, but the people needed time to heal. Whole shops had been destroyed- buildings and livelihoods that required a whole new five year plan. 

Post war was a time to hold your love ones tight and slowly but steadily begin to pick up pieces the pieces of your old life to try and put them together to resemble a new one. Community would come together. Resource packs full of blankets and food could be found in the Guild Hall, and any displaced families could be sheltered with others until new accommodation could be found or built. It had all been easier said than done, of course, there were still teething marks and logistical nightmares to sort through, but all in all Magnolia was in restore. 

Different people chose to cope in different ways. Different businesses too, and as such Sourcerer Weekly, a magazine with only an outside view of Magnolia, had its attempt at coping too.

It was impressive how the media could make a fandango out of a war. To trivialise it into skipable headlines and brush lives lost under some chatty, clickable draw-in. Sometimes it was only appropriate to laugh at such headlines.

To the credit of the magazine, if credit could be given for this, the headline had come five full years after war had ended. It wasn't as fresh a hurt to Magnolia anymore, and it really did strike a laugh around the guildhall, especially at who sat at Number 4.

Big disappointment, the peek turned out to be Press shots of the Spring Solstice Ball at the Crocus Palace and a mention of their new abode in a brief interview with Anna down the red carpet. Any disappointment on the lack of juice on Anna and Ichiya was not present inside the Guild since one of their own was related to them, and they often got updates through Lucy on how her new-old-relative was doing.

Not once had anyone brought it up to Lucy the implications of Ichiya being her long lost great great great Grandad. He wasn't, technically, but certainly some freaky lookalike of him was.

It had been a 'mums-the-word' topic. If nobody mentioned it, then maybe Lucy would never realise and the world could keep on turning. As far as they could tell, Lucy was blissfully unaware and it was a kindness to keep her that way. If she found out, the current running prediction was she would suddenly find why starting Guild brawls was so popular, and whoever sat next to her at the time would meet an unfortunate demise as a punching bag. 

It wasn't serious. These things around the Guild were more kept as a funny game to see how long it would take her to notice, but recently the stakes had been raised since her and Natsu had been trying and struggling for a kid. The couple's weekdays consisted of trying to figure out why her favourite sandwiches from the deli stand in the market suddenly tasted like the mayo was weeks off date to her- little upsets like that felt like explosions to Lucy since fertility drugs had her in hormone-city-7-days-a-week-Population:her. It was emotionally exhausting for her on her best days and all Natsu could do besides being there for her was to ask that the Guild be a little more careful around her. 

It was in part because of this that it hadn't occurred to anyone that Lucy would be the first to bring it up. 

"I'm sorry, what?" Gray asked, the only one of their teammates sat at the table brave enough to speak up. Next to her Natsu was choking through his drink, milkshake having frothed through his nose and napkins being posted his way from Erza and Wendy to stop brown milk dripping onto the wooden table.

"Do you think our kid will come out looking like Ichiya? It's possible. His genes are floating in me somewhere." 

"Please don't say that." Natsu groaned quickly, earning a chuckle from their group. At a raised eyebrow from his wife, he held his hands up. "Dude's a creep, nothin' to do with his face."

"Anna must see something in him." Gray reasoned. 

"No one can decode the mysteries of love." Erza hummed. "Besides, he is rather attractive."

She earned some sputters for that.

Lucy shook her head, smiling with amusement. "I'm sorry Erza, but even I don't see much in him, and he might be related to me." 

"Please no." She scratched a hand through Natsu's hair beside her, giggling at his protests. "Babe, if you're serious then I'm the King of Fiore." 

"You wish, pink-chops." A retort shot from Gray.

The guildhall was its usual Friday night business, so if they expected Lucy to start pummeling then she had her pick of the flock, but whether she was having a rare feeling good day or whether it was the autumn cozy ambiance of the guildhall that she always enjoyed, she appeared to be in good spirits, so Natsu pressed further.

"So the kid's going to have pink hair and Ichiya's nose?"

"Maybe his jawline too."

"And it's not too late to back out of the baby thing?"

"No." She shoved him with more strength than she meant to. Faces strained around the table when she accidentally shoved him into knocking Wendy's hot chocolate over. The ceramic clinked and clattered against its saucer, her heart already in her mouth even when only a small amount dribbled out.

"Woah, hey, it's okay. No casualties." Natsu was already beginning to sooth her, his hand tracing small circles between her shoulder blades.

To their surprise, Lucy simply shrugged, continuing on with her thought process.

"You don't think there's any resemblance do you?"

Natsu blinked, no longer needing to prep for a meltdown. He scanned up and down her face, taking her jaw gently in his hand to turn her profile so he could consider all elements. It was all Heartfilia, every eyelash and every young crease, all down to the scattering of freckles around her nose that he'd pretend to see constellations in when she taught him.

It even included the peachfuzz hairs that she complained about on her ears and face that she had stated her mother had had the same complaints about. No one could see it even with her concerns, but he loved it anyway.

"Hmm." He feigned his worriment, pressing a thinking finger to rub the unshaved scruff on his chin. "I think you might be safe there, Ma'am."

"But our kid might not be." 

Lucy attempted to waggle her eyebrows in a trick she thought she'd picked up from him, but ended up laughing at her own silliness.

Natsu stood as much as he could in the booth, smiling. "Sorry guys, I might have to take her home for more analysis. It's a serious issue, I'm sure yous understand." A series of protests reverberated around the table at Natsu's pevertedness, even more so when he successfully waggled his eyebrows. "Goodnight guys." 

They bid goodbye to their teammates as he helped his wife put her coat on. Slipping out of the warm comfort of the guildhall and into the brisk October air, his arm found her shoulders as she gladly held onto her husband's side. Her lips quirked with a smile at a final thought.

"His first word could be 'Maaan'"

"Shud' up."
