The character of Poloz the Great Snake is based on the Ural legends, miner's omens, and on the superstitions of the Khanty, the Mansi people, and the Bashkirs. The legends about Poloz, a giant serpent 6–10 meters long, still exist at the Urals. In the Bashkir folklore there is the character the Master of Gold, which can appear as various animals, including the snake. At the Urals he is also called The Serpent or The Snake King (Russian: Змеиный царь, Zmeinyj tsar). It is believed that the grass turns yellow where he touches the surface. Poloz and the snake trails in general indicate the location of gold. Slowworms are his servants.

Her name in Russian Огневушка-поскакушка (Ognevushka-poskakushka (lit. "the hopping fire girl").

Bazhov's stories are based on the oral lore of the miners and gold prospectors. In their stories, she is a dancing girl who shows the location of gold. The help of such mythical creature would explain why some miners were luckier than others, and unexplained natural phenomena such as the location of gold. She is sometimes called the daughter of Poloz the Great Snake from "The Great Snake" tale.

saw a youtube comment under a clip from the movie Tanki where Koshkin proposes to the Kharkiv Locomotive Plant team that they drive the two T-34 prototypes to Moscow - 800 kilometers - directly, under their own power, cross country. the commenter found this clearly absurd, which makes sense, considering that for any other tank of the era such a journey would be impossible without entirely rebuilding the tank in a factory, so as to account for the gruelling wear. however, this is one part of the movie that's entirely accurate, if even understated! the real prototypes underwent a 2,000 kilometer journey to Moscow, then to Karelia, and back to Kharkiv. sadly, reality itself has a commie bias
