Tengboche Monastery: The Largest Monastery Among The Highest Mountains in the Everest Region
Tengboche Monastery is a sanctified place of serenity and devotion that is highly regarded in Tibetan Buddhism. Located in the northeastern part of Nepal, in the Sagarmatha National Park, the monastery is the most widely known Buddhist monastery in the Himalayas of Khumbu. A place of spiritualism and sacredness, it is nestled among the alpine hills, with the stunning backdrop of Ama Dablam and the intersection of two reverberating rivers, Dudh Koshi and Imja Khola. At an elevation of 3,867 meters and directly falling on the route of the Everest Base Camp Trek.
History and Historical Importance
Established in 1916 by Lama Gulu, a Tibetan monk known for being blessed by Ngawang Tenzin Norbu, who was known to be the fifth incarnation of Sangwa Dorje,. The Tengboche Monastery has stood the testament of time, as it was struck by an earthquake in 1934 and again destroyed in a fire in 1989. It was rebuilt both times, and now it has become a symbol of peace and resilience among the Sherpas and trekkers.
Tumblr media
The monastery is a well-respected landmark among the trekking and mountaineering communities. As it falls right on the route to Mount Everest, many trekkers and mountaineers make a stop here to light candles and get blessings for a successful summit. Hence, it is also known as the “Gateway to Everest.”
Art and Architecture
Talking about the arts and architecture, many paintings, books, murals, and statues were destroyed during the fire, and only a few were salvaged. Now the monastery has been rebuilt under the leadership of the current Nawang Tenzing Jangpo, who is considered the incarnation of the founder, Lama Gulu, with the help of the donations of the trekkers. The walls are decorated with the intricate arts of the bodhisattva, drawn by the Tibetan painter Tarke-la.
From the gates of the monastery to the inside walls, it is filled with detailed paintings and carvings of symbols and arts representing Buddhist teachings and blessings. The paintings and architecture are the perfect fusion of Nepali and Tibetan culture and arts.
Connection with Culture and Traditions: Mani Rimdu Festival and Dumji Festival
Tumblr media
The festival is celebrated with elaborate elements of religious ceremonialism, dance, and drama. Beginning on the first day of the tenth month of the Tibetan Lunar Calendar, the festival is celebrated with traditional dances with masks, praying ceremonies, and feasts.
Similarly, the Dumji festival is also celebrated among the Sherpa communities of Solukhumbu. While the Mani Rimdu festival marks the founding of Buddhism, the Dumji festival celebrates the birth of its founder, Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava. The festival primarily focuses on the connections between families and communities. It is an annual festival that is celebrated in the month of July, which follows the Tibetan lunar calendar. It is a four-day-long festival that helps bring the communities together, as every thirteen years, it is the duty of three families to provide food and beverages for the village during the celebrations.
In the end, these festivals are the pillars for the sustenance of the Sherpa communities, as they bring all the villages together to celebrate happiness and peace.
How do I get to Tengboche Monastery?
Tengboche Monastery Trekking is quite popular among trekkers, especially for those who wish to dive deep into Buddhism or are interested in celebrations of Sherpa cultures. This is why it is pretty common for people to book the trek just around the times of festivals like Mani Rimdu, Loshar, and Dumji. The trek to the Tengboche Monastery begins just like any other trekking destination to Everest, with a thrilling flight to Lukla. Then, your destination follows the classic Everest Base Camp route via Phakding and Namche Bazaar, and finally, you will reach Tengboche. It can be anywhere from 5 to 6 days of trekking, where you can enjoy the crisp air of the Khumbu.
Tumblr media
As the trail runs through Sagarmatha National Park, you will require three permits: Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS), Pasang Lhamu Municipality Fee, and Sagarmatha National Park Fee. The trek to the Tengboche Monastery will definitely be a spiritual and natural experience.
The path is mostly uphill as you trek through the alpine forest of rhododendrons along the side of the Dudhkoshi River. Upon your arrival, you will see a gate of entry and a grassy field. Then, you will finally see the monastery building, surrounded by beautiful peaks, most notably Ama Dablam.
What is the best time to visit the Tengboche Monastery?
Speaking of weather, the best time to visit falls during the spring (March-May) and autumn (September–November). During this time, the temperature is moderate, and the weather is nice, so you can see every mountain under the clear azure sky.
Tumblr media
Luckily, the Mani Rimdu festival falls in October as well. Winter (December–February) is also the perfect time, as the weather is very clear, but it will be exceptionally cold. It will also be less crowded during the winter, so if you are well prepared to battle the freezing temperatures, you will have the best time. However, during the summer, it can be a bit tricky. The Khumbu region is very prone to rainfall, which can be a hindrance during the trek, especially with landslides occurring frequently, and poses a risk.
However, the mountain weather is always very tricky and is prone to frequent changes. Therefore, no matter which season, it is recommended that you follow a credible weather source before embarking on your treks or expeditions.
Things to take into account while visiting the Tengboche Monastery
Before anything else, one must know what this sacred site entails. Maintaining peace and respect while you visit is the top priority. Here is a list of things to follow during your visit to the Tengboche Monastery:
Dress modestly; people dressed in revealing clothes are not allowed inside the monastery.
Do not make noise or talk loudly on the premises of the monastery.
Make rounds of the monastery in a clockwise manner.
Greet and show proper respect to the monks.
Do not touch the monks, as physically touching the monks is forbidden.
Do not take photos or videos in the restricted zones of the monastery.
Know the proper stance when praying.
Pay respects by burning butter candles and incense.
A deep dive into the local lifestyle
The Sherpa communities have one of the most unique cultures in Nepal. With beautiful cultural dresses worn especially by the ladies and delicious Sherpa cuisine, you will have the time of your life during this trek. Especially during the festivals, you will come to witness vibrant, joy-filled interactions. Foods such as potatoes, yak cheese, dal bhat (rice and lentils), tsampa (barley flour), dhido, momo, thukpa, khapse, thenduk, and other delicious varieties are the highlights of this trip.
You will get a close-up look into the daily Sherpa activities such as morning prayers, preparing food, doing household chores, looking after their agriculture or animals, etc. Their simple lifestyle will bring you a sense of peace and yearning.
In conclusion
The trek to Tengboche is filled with rich natural and cultural influences that enhance your spiritual awakening. It is a short trek that will allow you to get the full experience of the ways of Buddhism as well as see the tallest mountain of the world, Mt. Everest, as well as other surrounding peaks such as Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Lhotse, etc.
So, if you are planning a trek to Tengboche Monastery, let us be at your service. We will arrange everything for you, from accommodation to transportation, with local and experienced guides. We guarantee you the best time with impeccable services.

A Six Hour Bus Ride
We were sent out of Itahari in style after finishing the conference. We were given marigolds which is a symbol of honor and headed towards Chitwan National Park. The roads have been either damaged by floods or ripped out to be reconstructed. It was slow going. We did, however, cross the Koshi river and were or maybe were t in India briefly.
We stopped for lunch and had the traditional rice in the middle with sides of curries and chutney. Then, it was back to the bus. During one of our stops we got mangos and ate them on the street. They were amazing!! I didn’t think I liked mangos but these are green and yellow on the outside instead of green and red—they’re delicious.
It was slow going and they kept saying we’re almost there. But some of the road was just dirt. So we definitely didn’t make good time. We did, however, arrive after 11 hours. It was a long day full of seeing the countryside.

About Me
Hi everyone! I just wanted to post something here on my newly created blog and I wanted to share some of bits of myself before I start posting my thoughts about IR.
Name: River
Age: 20s
Zodiac Sign: Cancer Sun, Gemini Moon, and Aries Rising
MBTI: I actually don't believe in MBTI but for fun sake it's ESTP.
Favorite Anime: I just recently started watching long run episodes anime like Bleach but my favorites are Haikyuu, My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan, Lovely Complex, and Jujutsu Kaisen.
Favorite Characters: I honestly can't think of since most of the characters that I liked are my anime simps as well. Probably the ones whom I genuinely like without simping them is Pieck Finger, Itadori Yuuji, Hinata Shoyo, Yuu Nishinoya, Ryuunouske Tanaka, Kotaro Bokuto, Akashi Keiji
Anime Simps: Kuroo Tetsurou, Daichi Sawamura, Sugawara Koshi, Iwaizumi Hajime, Levi Ackerman, Erwin Smith, Gojo Satoru, Nanami Kento, Fushigurou Toji, Bakugou Katsuki, Todoroki Shoto, and Kurosaki Ichigo
Favorite Ships: BakuDeku, EreHisu, IchiRuki, OiKuroo, KuroTsukki
What's the backstory of this account or why did you decided to create this account?
I already watched Bleach when I was in 5th or 6th grade. It was aired here in one of the major broadcasting TV channels here in our country but I was not able to watch the starting episode or follow through. I just watched them when I don't have any classes or if I'm absent that day since it is always aired on the morning.
I remember I bought a CD of some of the episodes of Bleach and I think that the episode that truly hooked me up was the backstory of Toshiro Hitsugaya, which is my childhood anime crush, and I was heavily focused on him. I was not able to dig deeper on IR but I know they were the main protagonist. That's the only episode that I watched before since the CD that I bought was incomplete and it kinda hassles me to binge watch Bleach from the start since I was not a fan of shounen animes. I was heavily fan of shojo animes only but Bleach caught my attention back then. Although Naruto is the most popular anime here and next is Bleach but I don't know why it kinda catches my attention.
I started to re-watch anime back in 2020 and I tried to watch shounen animes since I kinda no longer interested in shojo anime. I just recently started watching Bleach this year since the manga had already finished and the older episodes as well. Surprisingly I was caught by the chemistry of Ichigo and Rukia. I just learned that they were not the end game (yeah spoiler alert) and it kinda makes me question why. I mean yes, Rukia is not the typical girl that the MC would end up but I think their relationship and dynamics tells a lot which I'll be sharing when I finished watching Bleach. I read a lot of analysis for IR and I also wanted to share my thoughts. There will be inclusion of spirituality and esoterics so if you are open to that, that would be great. I will try to incorporate my knowledge on spirituality to IR and stuffs.
Message to readers:
I will try my best to sound objective and rational as possible especially I know that there are fan wars between IR ships and IH ships but I'm not sure if I can do that. If you happened to read my post and don't like it, please just take it with grain of salt. This is just for entertain purposes only and Kubo has already decided that Ichigo's end game is Orihime and we folks, can't do anything about that but to relieve our feels and thoughts here in this community.
I will not engage or encouraging you to throw degrading words for IR or IH as I wanted to have my own space to be a safe space for everyone.

About Lukla Flight: How is it?
The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla is a thrilling start to the 7-day Everest Base Camp trek. This 35-minute journey offers breathtaking aerial views of the Himalayas, with snow-capped peaks and deep valleys unfolding beneath you. Lukla's Tenzing-Hillary Airport, known for its short, steep runway, is one of the world's most challenging airstrips, adding an adrenaline rush to the adventure. The flight sets the stage for the trek, immersing you in the dramatic landscapes of the Everest region right from the outset. Upon landing, the trek begins, with Lukla serving as the gateway to the Khumbu region.
When to go EBC & Why?
The best times to trek to Everest Base Camp are during the pre-monsoon (spring) season from March to May and the post-monsoon (autumn) season from late September to November. Here’s why these periods are ideal:
Spring (March to May)
Weather and Temperature: Spring offers moderate temperatures and generally stable weather. The days are warm, while the nights can be chilly but manageable.
Visibility: The skies are usually clear, providing spectacular views of the mountains. This is crucial for enjoying the panoramic vistas and taking memorable photographs.
Flora and Fauna: Spring is when rhododendrons and other wildflowers are in full bloom, adding vibrant colors to the landscape. This season also offers a chance to spot various wildlife.
Mountaineering Season: Spring is the main climbing season for Mount Everest, so Base Camp is bustling with climbers preparing for their summit attempts. This creates a unique and exciting atmosphere.
Autumn (Late September to November)
Weather and Temperature: Autumn offers stable weather conditions and mild temperatures, making trekking comfortable. Post-monsoon, the air is crisp and clean, providing excellent visibility.
Visibility: Autumn is renowned for its crystal-clear skies, offering some of the best mountain views. The clarity of the air post-monsoon makes for stunning and uninterrupted vistas.
Cultural Experience: This season coincides with important festivals like Dashain and Tihar in Nepal, providing a unique cultural experience. Trekkers can witness and sometimes participate in local celebrations.
Trail Conditions: The trails are dry and firm, reducing the risk of slips and falls. The stable weather also means fewer disruptions to flights to and from Lukla.
Other Considerations
Monsoon Season (June to Early September): Heavy rains make trails slippery and increase the risk of landslides. Clouds often obscure mountain views and flights to Lukla can be frequently canceled or delayed.
Winter Season (December to February): Harsh cold, heavy snowfall and shorter days make trekking difficult. While the trails are less crowded and the skies can be clear, the extreme conditions are challenging.

In Nepal, one of the most difficult but rewarding treks is the Everest High Pass Trek. This trip offers an amazing combination of exhilarating high mountains, picturesque valleys, and astounding vistas of the Himalayas. It passes through some of the most magnificent landscapes on earth. Having made this walk myself, I can attest to how each stride, each challenge, and each moment of wonder contribute to creating an experience that will never be forgotten.
Tumblr media
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m)
Your tour begins in Kathmandu, Nepal’s busy capital. When you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will feel a mix of excitement and anxiety. Spend the day exploring Thamel’s bustling streets, picking up last-minute supplies, and immersing yourself in local culture. The anticipation rises as you plan for the coming days.
Day 2: Flight to Lukla and Trek to Phakding (2,610m) — 3–4 hours
The flight to Lukla is an adventure in itself. The small plane flies through the mountains, giving you a peek of the magnificent peaks you’ll soon be trekking amid. The trek begins upon arrival in Lukla. The trek to Phakding is a mild introduction, with rich green scenery and the calming sounds of the Dudh Koshi River accompanying you.
Day 3: Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,440m) — 6–7 hours
The path to Namche Bazaar is challenging, with steep inclines and suspension bridges swaying high above the river. As you climb higher, the air gets thinner, and the terrain more rugged. Reaching Namche Bazaar feels like a victory. This bustling mountain town, nestled in a natural amphitheater, is a hub for trekkers and climbers.
Day 4: Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar
Acclimatization is crucial for preventing altitude sickness. Spend the day exploring Namche, visiting the local market, and hiking up to the Everest View Hotel for a panoramic view of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. The day helps your body adjust to the altitude, making the rest of your trek more manageable.
Day 5: Trek to Tengboche (3,860m) — 5–6 hours
The trail to Tengboche is filled with ups and downs, crossing rivers and climbing through forests of rhododendron and pine. The highlight is the Tengboche Monastery, the largest in the Khumbu region. The serene atmosphere and stunning mountain backdrop provide a perfect place for reflection and rest.

Day 7: Acclimatization Day in Dingboche
Another acclimatization day helps your body adjust to the increasing altitude. A short hike to Nagarjun Hill (5,100m) offers stunning views of Makalu, Lhotse, and other towering peaks. Rest and hydration are key, as the next stages of the trek will push your limits even further.

Reaching the top, you’re rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers. The descent to Lobuche is equally challenging but ends with a sense of accomplishment.
Day 10: Trek to Gorak Shep (5,164m) and Everest Base Camp (5,364m) — 7–8 hours
The trek to Gorak Shep is strenuous, with the altitude making each step a struggle. After a brief rest, continue to Everest Base Camp. Standing at the base of the world’s highest mountain is an emotional experience. The prayer flags fluttering in the wind, the icefalls, and the vast expanse of the Khumbu Glacier are sights you’ll never forget.
Day 11: Hike to Kala Patthar (5,545m) and Trek to Dzongla (4,830m) — 7–8 hours
An early morning hike to Kala Patthar offers the best views of Everest. The climb is steep and exhausting, but the sunrise over Everest is worth every effort. Descend to Gorak Shep for breakfast before trekking to Dzongla, preparing for the second high pass.
Day 12: Trek to Cho La Pass (5,420m) and Gokyo (4,790m) — 7–8 hours
Cho La Pass is a challenging climb over rocks and ice. The descent is equally tough, with loose gravel and steep drops. Reaching Gokyo feels like a reward. The turquoise Gokyo Lakes and views of Cho Oyu and Gyachung Kang are mesmerizing.
Day 13: Trek to Gokyo Ri (5,357m) and Machhermo (4,470m) — 7–8 hours
Climbing Gokyo Ri for a sunrise view is an unforgettable experience. The panorama includes Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Descend to Gokyo for breakfast, then trek to Machhermo, a tranquil village surrounded by high peaks.
Day 14: Trek to Lungden (4,350m) — 5–6 hours
The trail to Lungden is less traveled, offering solitude and peace. The path winds through remote valleys, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Lungden is a quiet village where you can rest and reflect on your journey.
Day 15: Trek to Renjo La Pass (5,360m) and Thame (3,820m) — 7–8 hours

Journey Highlights: My Personal Experience on the Trek
The day we crossed Kongma La Pass seems like it was yesterday to me. Before the sun rose, we set out early, our flashlights piercing the night as we up the rocky, steep trail. Each breath was laborious because of the thin, sharp air. The ascent grew harder at about 5,000 meters, and each step felt like a huge effort. My clothes were sliced by the chilly wind, and my lungs hurt and my legs burned. I wasn’t sure if I could reach the top. However, as we got closer to the pass, the surrounding snow-capped peaks came to light from the first waves of sunlight.
The view awaited me when I eventually arrived at the 5,535-meter summit of Kongma La Pass. It was just breathtaking. I looked out in front of me and saw a limitless area of snow-covered peaks, including the imposing Nuptse and Lhotse. Even though I was exhausted, tears sprang to my eyes — not from the cold, but also from the overpowering beauty and a feeling of accomplishment. That was the one moment that gave meaning to every obstacle, uncertainty, and stride. I turned to face my fellow trekkers, and we all silently celebrated our shared victory as we overcame one of the most challenging sections of our journey.
Conclusion
The Everest High Pass Trek is a voyage of self-discovery and resilience. The physical demands are enormous, but the emotional rewards are even greater. Every steps, climb, and fight takes you closer to the Himalayan heart and your own inner power. If you’re looking for an adventure that will push your limits and transform your life, the Everest High Pass Trek is for you.
