It is believed to be the place where the arm of Lord Shiva appeared when he fled from the Pandavas in the form of a yaksha. This makes Tungnath Temple trek not only a physical journey but also a pilgrimage that connects travelers with divine energy.
A Part of the Panch Kedar
The Panch Kedar refers to five sacred temples of Lord Shiva located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. These temples – Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar – are considered highly significant in Hindu mythology, and visiting all five is said to bring spiritual blessings and purification. Among them, Tungnath stands out due to its incredible altitude and panoramic views of the Himalayas.
The Legend of Tungnath
According to legend, the Pandavas who fought the Mahabharata war sought Lord Shiva’s forgiveness for killing their own kin. Lord Shiva, however, did not want to forgive them and, in an attempt to escape, he turned into a bull and disappeared. But the Pandavas eventually tracked down Lord Shiva, and it is believed that his body parts appeared in five different locations. The Tungnath Temple marks the spot where his arm was said to have emerged from the ground.
The Temple Architecture
The architecture of Tungnath Temple is unique, showcasing traditional North Indian temple design. Built in the Pahari style, the temple is made of stone, with intricate carvings on the walls depicting various deities, including Lord Shiva in different forms. The temple, although simple in its design, emanates a deep sense of peace and tranquility that visitors feel as they approach it after the challenging trek.

Overview of the Chopta Tungnath Trek
The Chopta Tungnath trek is a moderately challenging trek that takes you from the serene village of Chopta to the Tungnath Temple. The trek itself is around 3.5 km (one way) and takes around 3-4 hours to ascend, depending on the pace. The path leads you through a stunning rhododendron and oak forest that comes alive with vibrant colors, especially in spring.
Chopta, often referred to as the "Mini Switzerland of India," is a small village surrounded by lush meadows and tall trees, making it a favorite for both trekkers and nature lovers. The journey is invigorating, with breathtaking views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and other snow-capped peaks that dominate the skyline.

A Brief History of Chopta, Uttarakhand Tourism
Tucked away in the lap of the Himalayas is Chopta, a quaint hill station in the state of Uttarakhand, India. Often referred to as the 'Mini Switzerland' of India, Chopta's tourism history is relatively recent in comparison to other hill stations in India. The region started gaining prominence as an ecotourism destination only in the last couple of decades.
The Rise of Ecotourism
Eco-friendly travel has become increasingly popular, with travelers seeking destinations that offer natural beauty and outdoor adventures with minimal environmental impact. Chopta, being a part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, became an ideal spot for trekkers and nature lovers, promoting conservation alongside tourism. Its pristine condition is largely because of its late discovery and lower commercial sprawl.
Chopta As a Trekking Hub
The village serves as a base for several trekking destinations. Notably, the Tungnath Temple trek, which leads to the highest Shiva temple in the world, and further upward to Chandrashila Peak, offering panoramic views of snow-clad peaks. The popularity of these treks brought Chopta to the limelight among the trekking community by the late 20th century.
Developments in Connectivity
Improvements in road connectivity contributed to the growth of tourism in Chopta. The transport infrastructure became more reliable, allowing more tourists to access this once remote location. As roads connected Chopta with major cities such as Rishikesh and Haridwar, the influx of tourists increased, especially among those seeking a spiritual experience linked with adventure.
Sustainable Tourism Initiatives
With the increasing awareness about the importance of sustainable travel, initiatives in Chopta are focused on minimizing environmental impact. The rise of homestays run by locals, organic farming, and use of solar power are a few examples of hospitality trends that align with environmentally friendly practices.
Current Trends
In recent years, with social media's rising influence, Chopta has become a popular destination for photographers and nature enthusiasts. The 'off-the-beaten-path' character of Chopta is especially appealing to those looking for serene locations away from bustling tourist cities. Additionally, wellness tourism has seen a rise with yoga and meditation retreats taking advantage of Chopta's peaceful environment.

Today we are going to share an easy and exciting 2-day Himalayan getaway that can be completed and enjoyed even without any prior experience of trekking. This outing in Chopta will take you to the highest Shiva temple in the world — Tungnath (meaning Lord of the Peaks), a Himalayan peak (Chandrashila / 3,690 m), and a quaint Himalayan freshwater lake (Deoria Tal) that will enchant you with magical reflections of the surrounding Himalayan mountains.
Deoria Tal and its magical reflection
The trek takes us across the district of Rudraprayag in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Nestled amidst the Garhwal Himalayas and its enriching vegetation and wildlife, Chopta offers everyone something to take back home. The entire region abuts the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. You will get mesmerising mountain views all around — with lots of snow as well, depending on the season. You will visit the highest Shiva temple in the world — Tungnath, at 12,000+ ft and summit Chandrashila peak. Tungnath is one of the Panch Kedar temples devoted to Lord Shiva and is famed to be older than 1,000 years.
The trek consists of a paved route for most of the path till the Tungnath Temple (maintained by the State Forest Department) and is a linear route, which means you return the same way you go up. You can go up to Tungnath-Chandrashila and return within 5–6 hours after spending some leisure time up in the mountains.
View while trekking up to Tungnath, with the rhododendron flowers in full bloom and the Kedarnath dome in the background
A visit to Deoria Tal (Tal means ‘lake’ in Hindi) takes a different route. To get to the lake, you first need to reach a tiny village called Sari, which is the starting point or base camp for this short hike. You will take a paved route going uphill from Sari to reach Deoria Tal. As per legend, this is the lake where the Pandavas were asked the questions of life by Yakshya in the Mahabharata. The lake has lush green surroundings all around, and offers a wonderful panorama of majestic Himalayan giants — among those Chaukhamba (7,138 m), Kedar Dome (6,940 m), Janhukut (6,805 m), Neelkantha (6,500 m) and Banderpunch (6,316 m), amidst others.
Morning view from Deorial Tal. The Chaukhamba massif can be seen on the right.
There’s a small watchtower beside the lake. Going up there gives you a better view of the surrounding ranges. As always, I recommend early Himalayan mornings for the best views.
Kedarnath Dome as seen from the Deoria Tal watchtower
The majestic Chaukhamba Massif: Shot taken from Deoria Tal
How long does it take to complete the trek?
Practically, you can complete all three (Tungnath, Chandrashila and Deoria Tal) the same day, but to maintain a relaxed pace and to enjoy yourself more, we would recommend completing Tungnath and Chandrashila the first day (both of these are on the same route) and then halt overnight at Sari. You can visit Deoria Tal early next morning from Sari (~3 km). Believe me, early morning mountain views from Deoria Tal are unparallelled.
Day-1: Get out at 7AM and start the trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila, come back by 12PM. Spend some recreational time on the Chopta Bugyals and head to Sari (~45 mins from Chopta) in the afternoon. Halt overnight at Sari.
Day-2: Get up at 5 and hike up the paved route to Deoria Tal. Enjoy the sunrise and the view of Himalayan mountains like Chaukhamba, Kedarnath dome, Janhukut among multiple others. Come back to Sari and start your return.
What’s the Best Time for this Trek?
This trek remains open throughout the year, but you can avoid peak winters or summers. April to June would be an ideal time to visit this place, with cool temperatures and the rhododendron flowers in full bloom. Chopta sits at an elevation of around 8800 ft, and the snow can increase quite a bit during winters. Regardless of which time of the year you’re planning your trek, please carry your winter/woollen clothing with you.
Tungnath Temple Opening Dates
The Tungnath temple opens only for about 6 months in a year. It usually opens around early May every year (around the same time as Kedarnath) once the snow recedes, and closes again in November with the onset of heavy snow. In 2022, the temple opened on 6th May. We had trekked to Tungnath in March 2019, and the temple was closed for visitors (during this time, the idol in the temple is moved to Mukku village).

Embrace Chopta, Tunganath, Chandrashila with Deoriatal Trek
In the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand lies a trek where the rugged beauty of the mountains intertwines with the tranquil presence of the divine. This is the Chopta chandrashila trek, a journey enriched with the serene experience of Deoriatal. Whether you call it a spiritual pilgrimage or an adventure through nature’s wonders, it is a harmonious blend of both. The sacred aura of the divine lingers in the mountain air, while the gentle touch of nature guides each step, creating a path that connects the heart and soul to the majestic landscape. Here, every bend in the trail unfolds not just breathtaking views, but a deeper connection to something beyond the earthly realm, a journey that offers not only stunning vistas but also stories to carry and a serenity that stays long after.
Known for its beautiful landscapes and profound cultural significance, the trek takes you through dense forests, rolling meadows, and snow-covered paths, leading to the revered Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world. From here, a short ascent brings you to the Chandrashila Summit, where the views stretch across some of the most iconic Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba, the majestic sights that will forever be etched in your memory.
The trek also includes a visit to the tranquil Deoriatal Lake, a peaceful spot where the still waters mirror the surrounding peaks and forests, inviting moments of reflection and awe. Even if you are a first-timer, this journey is as accessible as it is easy to moderate trek. The trek ensures that every part of the journey resonates with the peace, wonder, and divine energy that only the Himalayas can provide.
Major Attractions of Chopta, Tunganath, Chandrashila with Deoriatal Trek
Sunrise from Chandrashila Summit:
One of the most mesmerizing highlights of the trek is witnessing the sunrise from the Chandrashila summit. Trekkers set out in the early pre-dawn hours to reach the top just as the first light breaks over the horizon. The sky transforms into vivid shades of gold, orange, and crimson, casting a radiant glow over the surrounding mountains. This spectacular sunrise, with its serene and almost spiritual atmosphere, is a moment of pure magic and is often described as the crowning glory of the trek.
Tungnath Temple:
The highest Shiva temple in the world, Tungnath is a major spiritual attraction on the trek. Steeped in mythology, it is one of the revered Panch Kedars and is said to have been built by the Pandavas in their quest for Lord Shiva’s forgiveness. The temple’s ancient stone structure and peaceful surroundings create an ambiance that feels timeless and sacred. The history and legends associated with Tungnath infuse the journey with a deep sense of reverence and spirituality.
Glory of Himalayan Peaks:
The trek rewards adventurers with unparalleled views of the majestic Himalayan peaks. From the summit, trekkers can marvel at a 360-degree panorama that includes towering giants such as Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Kedar Dome, and more. These snow-capped peaks stand like guardians over the Garhwal region, their imposing presence filling the horizon. The sight of these mountains bathed in the soft light of dawn or silhouetted against a clear blue sky is a visual feast that lingers long after the trek is over.
Deoriatal Lake:
Situated amidst dense forests and offering reflections of the Chaukhamba peaks, Deoriatal is another major highlight. The serene lake, surrounded by lush greenery and overlooked by snowy summits, provides a tranquil spot for trekkers to rest and take in nature’s beauty. The clear waters of Deoriatal, with the majestic peaks mirrored on its surface, create an enchanting scene that adds to the trek’s allure.
Rich Flora and Fauna:
The Chopta region is known for its rich biodiversity. Trekking through dense rhododendron forests, pine trees, and alpine meadows, adventurers often spot native birds such as the vibrant Himalayan Monal, the state bird of Uttarakhand. The area’s natural beauty and the chance encounters with wildlife enhance the trek's immersive experience in nature.
How to reach Chopta
By Air-You can take a flight to Jolly Grant airport Dehradun. The distance from Jolly grant airport to Rishikesh is 14 km where you can take Bus/ Cab early in the morning, So if possible try to reach there one day before departure from Rishikesh.
By Train-You can take a train to Rishikesh/ Haridwar or Kathgodam. After reaching there you can take a Bus/ Cab early in the morning.
By Road-There are 2 routes which you can take to reach chopta. Either you can take Rishikesh- Srinagar- Agastmuni- Ukhimath- Chopta which is approx 256 km, it will take 8-9 hours of drive or you can take Kathgodam- Ranikhet- Gairsain- Karnaprayag- Rudraprayag- Ukhimath- Chopta with the distance of 261 kms.
I was searching how to reach Chopta from Rishikesh because at that time there were some constructions happening on the National highway 7 due to which the roads were closed. So we took the Rishikesh- Srinagar-Rudraprayag- Ukhimath route to reach there. At a place near Rudraprayag, we got confused about which one is the correct way to the basecamp of Chandrashila.
Note: There are 2 chopta that will come on your route. So don’t get confused between them. One chopta is a village that comes near Rudraprayag and the other which is the basecamp of Tungnath Chandrashila comes after Agastmuni- Ukhimath. So follow the Agastmuni- Ukhimath route to reach the basecamp of Chopta Chandrashila.
