In celebration of the 10 year anniversary of korrasami I want to share the video that left me in shambles and after years later I still think about it all the time

Happy 10th Korrasamiversary to all of us who celebrate!!

It's been ten years already??? I was just a tiny little 17yo baby when "life is good, Korrasami is canon" became the mantra that got me through the hardest times of my life. Even though I have lots of other reasons to think that life is good nowadays, they'll always represent a safe space for me, a cozy little pocket in my heart.

It was a little after that that I could finally admit to myself that I was queer. I used to excuse my obssession with Korrasami by thinking that even though I was straight, it was a great ship, that it didn't mean anything more deep than that. They were one of the first wlw representation that I had and the first one that I grasped as a saving line in my denial of who I was. I found community in the fandom when I needed it the most and I'll be forever grateful for that.

It was also because of Korrasami that I learned english for real! Since I couldn't find enough fanfictions in portuguese to quench my thirst, I had to take my absurdly basic english and make it do, and it was so painful in the beginning, having to put every other word in google translate, throwing every weird expression on urban dictionary to see if it meant anything... But I was reading so much that it rapidly improved (when I reread one of the ones I first read at these times it always takes me back) and now it's as natural as reading something in my native language! It's something that helped me a lot personally and professionally and all thanks to baby me who wanted so strongly to see and understand herself using these stories.

I didn't think that today would hit me like this, to think of how time passed and how things changed for the better is making me meditate a bit about some things. I don't interact with fandom as much as I did almost a decade before, but it's good to be able to see some of the same people who unknowingly helped me so much in my journey are still here somehow, and still growing and changing and thriving. I'm always happy to see you guys being happy, really. The Korrasami fandom taught me the meaning of belonging.

I couldn't be more grateful for this amazing fictional girls, for helping me to see who I was, for teaching me that being myself unapologetically was ok.

They walked into that portal and changed lives.

You're right Korra is anything but shy. I hate when people draw or write Korra like she is one. It shows that they do not understand Korra as a character, her personality changed a bit in book 4 but she is Not a shy girl or a soft girl.

Fresh Reads Fridaaaaaay !

hello beloveds, I am coming at you hot with a genre that I fear I often neglect on our little Friday get togethers: romance!

before you ask: yes, there are queer romances on they sound very sweet. and they're not even all white! but I have the most questions about The No-Show, which seems to be about... one poorly-organized man cheating THREE TIMES OVER by juggling three women who don't know about each other. but my understanding is that a romance is required to offer up a happily ever after, so how are we solving this one? personally I hope they pull a Korrasami with bonus polyamory, ie, all three women dumping him to date each other instead.

anyway, if you started panting and shaking with excitement when I said there are gay books on that list... I mean, calm down. seek help. but then check this shit out:

When I started shipping them: way way back in season one, they had so little interactions but were pretty much the only pair I was interested in lol, back when they were a rarepair...

My thoughts: I'm so glad the writers got to make them canon, I still remember that I was working that day and saw some of it on tumblr and honestly wasn't sure if it was real or not until I saw it

What makes me happy about them: they're canon!!!! and that the two of them came to understand and rely on each other, I think season three really built a lot of groundwork for them coming together and I'm grateful for that

What makes me sad about them: we never got to see them kiss on tv, like I do absolutely understand that, hell it's even a struggle now for it but I wish we could have gotten it still

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: any time I see a fic where Korra is portrayed as an idiot or primitive I cringe. I once saw one where Asami was exploring the land and kidnapped and immediately knew that's where that was going and noped out

Things I look for in fanfic: hm, I haven't searched for korrasami fanfic in a while but I'm a huge sucker for aus where Korra was the one to run into her in season one or aus where they don't actually meet till later, completely different I know

My wishlist: I don't have much of one, I'd just like to see more of them in the comics which I think I will

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: nope, that's it for me for them

My happily ever after for them: I just want them to have more spirit world trips together and spend some time together, like let them have a happy ending where they're not always forced to save everything all the time and can relax

when do you think theyll make hawkdemetri canon; in s4 or later (assuming it goes to 6 seasons)? i think the romantic aspects of their relationship will be empathized more clearly in s4 (hawk's jealousy of yasmime, their deep understanding and love for each other, etc) but they won't officially get together until the fifth season, leaving the last one to explore them figuring out how to go public and all that. or or i was thinking they do get together in s4 but due to the cobras threatening demetri or smth like that, they break up shortly after and don't get back together until the s5 or 6 finale. i feel like i'm being bold bc nothings set in stone but w what jon and hayden liked/rted im just ahhh!! so excited!!

IF SHE-RA WENT THROUGH WITH IT MAYBE IT ISN’T A MERE GAY KARATE PIPE DREAM

I personally see them making Hawk/Demetri an endgame pairing, so they wouldn’t officially get together until close to the end of the series--maybe even IN the series finale (which, as I believe I mentioned in one of my other posts, I would strongly prefer to be the kids’ senior prom, where a giant karate fight breaks out and everyone has to battle in tuxes and dresses because it would be HILARIOUSLY AWESOME). I think they might do it like She-Ra did Catradora, where they don’t confess their love and get together until the last (or close to the last) episode (Ah, She-Ra spoilers, I guess...but anyone who doesn’t know by now that Catra and Adora end up together has been living under a rock XD) but there’s LOTS of ship tease prior and maybe even a stolen kiss/hand-hold or two leading up to that moment. Either way, if they decide to go the Hawkmetri route, it definitely has Endgame Ship vibes to me, which means...good news is, we’re gonna win this bitch, and bad news is, I don’t think we’ll be seeing Hawkmetri proper anytime soon, especially if the show goes on for 6+ seasons D: But hey, we sure as hell have something to look forward to, if our hope isn’t totally misplaced!

I think most likely Demetri and Yasmine will date throughout Season 4, and I can see the writers using this to give Hawk a “green-eyed epiphany” of sorts, where he realizes he’s jealous of Yasmine in slightly more than a you’re-hanging-out-with-my-best-friend-more-than-me kind of way, and he’s just like “...oh fuck, am I gay? Shit shit SHIT” and cue Big Boi Angst! Probably by Season 5 Dem and Yaz will be broken up (because ain’t no one telling me a relationship founded on wedgies lasts more than one goddamn season), and that’s when we’ll start getting a lot more ship tease with Demetri and Hawk--subtle touches, a bit of hand-holding (but, of course, they’d find a way to do it in contexts where they can get away with it lol), “friendship teasing” that’s basically flirting, longing gazes when the other isn’t looking, getting a little TOO contact-happy when they spar--that kinda deal. Maybe at the end of Season 5, they’ll share a kiss, but they won’t want to address it or it’ll come with some complication. Like they’re both drunk, or maybe one kisses the other and then doesn’t want to talk about it afterwards because they’re too embarrassed, etc etc. And they’re both trying to figure out if everyone’s even going to be cool with them being gay anyways.

Season 6 I see as being more or less the same thing, with lots of ship tease and mutual pining and such, but it’s a bit more intense now and kinda complicated by the fact that they’re more directly aware of their affection for each other being romantic and they’re both trying to come to terms with the fact that they’re definitely probably not straight. They’re also slowly realizing they’re full-on in love with each other too, and they’re both trying to work up the courage to just ask the other to be with them. And then at the end of the season they finally do it, and then go to Karate Prom together!!! The madlads!!!

GRANTED, I’m REALLY trying not to get my own hopes up about all this, BUT the fact that one of the show creators liked someone’s tweet asking if Hawk and Demetri were gonna be the LGBT rep and another creator straight-up RETWEETING Hawk x Demetri fanart is...admittedly very promising!!! I’m really really hoping beyond hope that this ship happens!!! But Korrasami happened, Catradora happened...so anything is possible!!! It’s certainly easier to make a gay ship with semi-major characters canon than it used to be. I just hope the homophobic side of the Cobra Kai fanbase doesn’t mess this up for us by bitching about “PC” LGBT representation to the showrunners or something :/ Man...it’s honestly kind of alarming to see the amount of people who seem against shipping Hawk and Demetri solely because...they’re both guys??? Like people really be like “UGH these two guys are PLATONIC FRIENDS why must you make it GAY???” As if anyone in the history of EVER has said “UGH this guy and this girl are PLATONIC FRIENDS why must you make it STRAIGHT???” because...they’re already “defaulted” to be straight :/ Sigh...this is the depressing world we live in, I guess.

Do you think they will make gay couples in the next ATLA comics to make them consistenced with LoK comics? I don't mind that, but I wouldn't prefer if they decided to pair Azula with a girl, either with one in her group or -in worst cases- Ty Lee. I wouldn't like if the writers used her as shipping fodder to sell the new unhomophobic Fire Nation idea or make Ozai a terrible father because he never allowed Azula to date girls if they ever decided to make her to talk her past with him.

I can’t say I know, though ATLA has never even tried to delve into these matters before. Either ATLA will remain removed from these topics, or Bryke will indeed have the new writer address that too. But I don’t know, really, if they’ll use Azula this way. I don’t know.

Personally, I hope they won’t do that with Azula, because I dread the writer might commit an oversimplification of the matter of same-sex relationships + oversimplification of Azula’s character. It’s not only because of the shipping fodder, but the fact that Azula was born and raised in the apparently homophobic Fire Nation, and she was 100% supportive of that regime. This fact alone would make her potential transition into a more diverse Fire Nation kind of difficult. 

We don’t even know if they’re going to make a point to show Zuko is being an accepting Fire Lord or not, if he will change the law and decriminalize these relationships, but whatever, my point is… unlike Zuko, who started defying his forefathers’ ideals, Azula hasn’t. If Azula were gay, which I don’t think she is, she’d have repressed her sexuality to the extreme, and helping her accept herself should probably be the subject of an entire comic, rather than something waved in suddenly just to please a group of her fans.

It’s funny because before the LOK comics said anything about sexuality in the Avatarverse, people could headcanon things much more freely than they can now. I frankly cannot understand how so many people interpreted the explanations on how homosexuality was CRIMINALIZED in the Fire Nation as proof that their same-sex Fire Nation ships were now 100% valid when… it was actually the entire opposite? Especially when it comes to Azula. She believed in her father, believed in his teachings, heck, the comics have her discarding him as a person, and yet still spouting the crap he hammered into her head about controlling everyone through fear. Someone who lived by Ozai’s beliefs as faithfully as Azula did wasn’t likely to rebel against him during the show, especially when it came to something that was criminalized. So saying Azula was engaged in a same-sex relationship during the show is now either mischaracterizing her/ignorant of the new canon regarding sexuality in the Fire Nation as established by LOK.

If someone wants to make a fic where she falls for any girl, and that makes her start questioning her father, fine by me! You go ahead! But saying this revelation makes every femslash Azula ship canon? People who say this are either joking, or they just have no grasp on Azula’s character whatsoever.

New comics would have to put in proper efforts to make Azula gay, and this time there’s no excuse not to do it. Korrasami is already canon, they’ve already established this franchise can and will portray same-sex relationships: ergo, there’s NO excuse to shoehorn Azula being gay with zero exposure or zero development, especially when making her gay could serve as a breaking point that would make her understand the wrong of her learned beliefs and distance herself from the Hundred Year War Fire Nation for good.

Personally, I don’t think she’s gay, but I know a ton of people do. So yes, I as well dread that they might write her as gay in the next comics just for fanservice purposes, and it’s not only because I never saw her like that. My main concern is that that sort of “revelation” would be the perfect gateway for a particular group of femslash shippers, who already have made a fair share of insulting posts attacking ships like mine, to feel extra entitled to attack anyone who ever dared ship Azula with a guy. Frankly, if Azula gets a canonical female love interest, I’d choose to see her as bisexual and still consider my ship perfectly valid. But for those groups of fans who have openly trashed straight Azula ships just because they’re straight, anything will be fair ground to “destroy the competition”. This would be just what they’d love to hear so they can start filling the tags of certain ships with hate, or the ask boxes of those shippers…

So for the sake of peace in Azula’s corner of the fandom, most of all, I’d rather they remain completely vague about Azula, her love interests and her sexuality. Even as it is now, things have gotten vicious-ish enough between different factions, hell, there’s even been some nasty fights within the same ship before… so I’d rather they don’t decide to cater to some people on these regards just for sales or whatever could be the motivation for ATLA’s comics.

13. what is a misconception you had about lgb people before you realized you were one?

Okay, so I was raised in an extremely homophobic household (my mom specifically) and so I held a lot of very homophobic beliefs and misconceptions that most homophobes tend to throw around. So just imagine how good that 180 felt. I went from hating a group of people to loving everyone? That was such a nice, wholesome change that made me really a lot happier than I was before? And since it was my friends that made me realize what I was, they were definitely okay with it. And I mean... I’d say I’m more pan than bi, but I’ve identified as bi for so long, it’s just... my go to I guess? But yeah. 

14. what is a piece of advice you would give to your younger self

Be fuckin nice to everyone, you prick! Stop letting bullies get to you, just be yourself. Because being friends with manipulative assholes that make fun of you constantly isn’t fun. Just.. Be nice but also don’t let people walk all over you?

Not unknowingly, but yes. I don’t typically ask guys out, but if I do, I tend to make sure they’re gay/bi/pan before I even start to crush on them lol. Because for me there’s like a locked door for every male unless my gaydar is ringing hella loud. 

There is, however one guy rn that I’m kinda crushing on? But this is the first time my Gaydar’s been confused? He’s just too good looking to be straight but... What if? The mAN LOOKS... SOFT, OKAY? I just wanna floof his hair and talk to him a lot? And just... His eyes are so pretty? And I didn’t really talk to him all that much, because he’s in my senior design class and there are like 90+ people there so it’s too many people to actually notice someone? Yes, I have. I think officially once, although I do have hard feelings for someone rn, I’m too scared to classify it as anything rn. It’s just feelings lol. But my problem is I love wholly and too much and a lot of people can’t reciprocate/are intimidated by that prospect. And so I get heartbroken really easily. And I lose friends. I think I explained the one situation well enough in another one of these asks, haha.

I was so upset about how Voltron Season 2 ended. I thought it would end like LOK with an LGBT+ pairing (didn't matter which, I just wanted one) holding hands or something and then pick up next season. I don't know, I really, really hope that comment an interviewer made was about the third season because I'm kind of feeling a bit queerbaited. And Hunk was resorted to jokes about food. That's a big step back from last season. Let's just hope for a better (and gayer) third season.

Spoilers beneath the cut. You have been warned!

Yep. It was queerbaiting comment, for sure. All is forgiven if they were talking about Season 3 and follow through with it, of course. That comment confused me in general, though. I don’t really feel there was anything going on in Season 2 that couldn’t have been shown on CN or Nick, for example. I mean, maybe a few of the fight scenes might have been a shade toned down (and I am just being nitpicky) but certainly there was nothing romantic/sexual/gender questioning going on at all with anyone! That much I will give them - there are no romantic relationships of any sort on the show if we get past the glimpses we’ve seen of the Paladins’ parents. Heck, we don’t even know if Rolo and Nyma are a romantic couple, it just wasn’t played that way. The closest we get is Lance’s feeble womanizing (which absolutely no one takes seriously, including Lance, although it’s starting to border on assholery with Allura since she’s clearly not interested and he keeps pushing it, come on, showrunners, don’t do that shit, it ain’t cute) and the group’s gentle teasing of Hunk with regards to Shay (which clearly doesn’t upset or bother Hunk at all).

Now clearly a character can be LGBT+ without having their sex life actually addressed (no really, Hollywood, it’s true!) but since, outside of Lance, they haven’t addressed anyone’s sexuality at all I don’t think they are being coy about it. Our seven main characters have been utterly focused on the fight with Zarkon and that’s it. Which is fine with me at this point.

They did make it clear this season that Pidge thinks of herself as a girl - she even refers to her lion as “Girl” (which I loved, by the way). Doesn’t mean that Pidge couldn’t be LGBT+ of course! (A baby queer Pidge sporting a huge crush on a girl would delight me to no end, although she seems to feel that way for mechanics and I am down with Ace and/or Aro Pidge if that’s how they want to play it.) 

I know the fans want a Lance/Keith pairing, but I have to be honest and say that at this point the two of them are coming across as bickering siblings far more than two guys who have unrealized crushes on each other - especially in light of the comment that they are going to address sexuality on the show! I mean, if they are going to address it, why leave it all up to easily misconstrued and very subtle subtext? Watching the two of them in action is like watching my twins in action. If the actors are supposed to be playing it that these two guys are attracted to each other but either don’t know it or don’t know how to play it, they are not convincing me. The point I am trying to make is that if the showrunners were trying to sort of fly under the radar with it - the way Bryke did with Korrasami - that would be one thing. But they’ve stated that they are not, so what’s with making the fans dig really deep for it? It would not be done that way if it were two hetero people having a love/hate attraction kind of thing, and that’s what gets me. Either treat it the same or don’t do it at all, you know? And maybe I’ll change my mind on a second viewing (I was watching it with a sick kid and also taking care of her, so I’ll admit I may have missed something) but yeah. I don’t know. Maybe I am asking too much. Either do it so that the kids watching - not the older teens/adults watching, but the actual intended audience - understand that these two characters are in love/have a relationship or don’t do it at all. (And it can be done. Kids understand that Pearl loved Rose and wanted her to be her girlfriend, Clyde on Loud House has two dads, and Mitch from ParaNorman has a boyfriend.) But instead we’ve got Lance wanting to know if Keith and Allura are in a tree (HA!) and yes, as I grownup lady I could take it that Lance is actually jealous at the thought that Keith might be kissing someone else, but kids are not going to get that, because Lance is always going on and on about Allura. They are going to assume he is worried that Allura is kissing someone else, and that is entirely my point.

That could change of course - and if done right, having the two of them realize they have feelings for each other and then having the atmosphere between them do a 180 would be great and I would be there for it. But uh, speaking as an older person, a teacher, and a mother, the last fucking thing you want on a ship where everyone is desperately scrambling to get ready to fight a deadly enemy would be two teenage boys distracted from training by trying to get it on at every possible minute. OMG.

And I think that is the point, really. Not that much time is supposed to have passed between a bunch of kids still at the Garrison to that big fight with Zarkon and Haggar. We are talking months, not years. They’ve had no time to really focus on their personal lives. We’ve seen growth - I just LOVED Pidge’s episode where she bonded further with her forest lion despite her pale skin and allergies (god, I love her) and obviously Keith was the focus this season and got a lot of growth as well. (Hunk’s referral to him as “Keith” and “Galra Keith” had me on the floor.)

I did love that Lance, as a presumed straight boy, rocked the face mask - why the fuck can’t straight boys give a damn about their appearance? And I did love that we were shown that Hunk has a true love for food and for feeding people, not just eating. I do feel that his smarts are getting overshadowed by Pidge’s - I mean, Hunk is supposed to be an engineer but he’s not doing any of that, Pidge has taken over. I think his character needs a little love next season, for sure. Although how much did I love Hunk and Pidge holding hands and crying when they were going to be separated? SO MUCH. And Jeremy Shada confirmed that he’s working on his Spanish so that Lance can speak it convincingly, which gets my full and hearty approval. More Cuban boy speaking Spanish, please!

Do you know who I would really like to come out? Shiro. Not Lance, not Keith, but Shiro. Having the main male protagonist, the hero of the show, the strong one, the father figure, be gay? THAT is what I would like to see. I don’t want to see Allura in any kind of romantic relationship at this point - she’s been asleep for 10,000 years only to wake up and realize her planet and her people and everything she knew is gone, give the woman some breathing space to grieve and deal (which she has not done, by the way, and I want to know if that’s going to be addressed or if the showrunners are just going to sort of let it slide and hope we’ll forget about it). I am not at all invested in a Shiro and Allura relationship, which I don’t think would work (too many cooks and not enough assistants, if you catch my meaning) and anyhow, Shiro’s my pick for being a LGBT+ character. 

I wasn’t disappointed by season 2, although it wasn’t quite what I had hoped for. The characters didn’t come along as far as I had hoped, which is a pity. Here’s hoping season 3 will go deeper into that. But that sexuality comment still confuses the fuck out of me, because, like I said, outside of Lance’s half-assed womanizing (which could certainly be read as the lady doth protest too much, I will grant you) there was nothing about sexuality at all, be it straight, gay or anything in between. So I think it must refer to season 3. It has to!
