Fine.

Let's talk about Korrasami.

Ten years ago, for the first time in history, a same-sex couple won the major shipwar on a children's animated show. In fact, I think it might have been the first main-character victory for mainstream television in history (wait, no, Xena. Xena and Gabrielle, God Bless Them).

I'm not going to pretend that it was the first same-sex couple in animation history. Harley and Ivy were written as a couple in Batman (subtext). Maggie Sawyer's partner appeared in an episode of Superman: the Animated Series (breaking-the-surface subtext). Long before them, in the eighties, the titular Jem's sister Kimber and rival band-member Stormer both performed a song together and had very strong sapphic vibes.

Even before that, long ago, perhaps unintentionally, we had Race Bannon and Doctor Benton Quest co-parenting two kids. It was lampooned later in Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, but a future reboot of Johnny Quest will undoubtedly feature Race and Benton engaging in a romantic relationship--maybe this decade. Maybe the next. Maybe not until their 100th anniversary. But it will happen.

I'm remembering this and restating this for one reason, and one simple reason:

We won that day.

Ground was gained that cannot be ceded or lost. It will not be ceded. It will not vanish. The steps of representation moved forward that day. And you know where this is going now.

Two days ago, we learned that our beloved Disney company, the one that has sat on the Star Wars and Marvel IPs for years and barely provided scraps of LGBTQ representation outside of token, easily-cut moments (I have not watched Agatha All Along, but I believe I owe them props, you're excused), erased the identity of a transgender character in Pixar's latest project. A month ago, we learned that Disney wanted to wholly erase a whole episode focusing on transgender rights.

People are terrified that this means the culture war is lost. That all the years of progress have been wiped away.

Their concerns are not unfounded, but the simple fact is this:

All that's happening, at least in entertainment, is that we are ceding ground that we gained. That is--honestly--to be expected. Study the progressive works of the nineties, and you'll see similar erasure: racial diversity, disability representation, and more all actually suffered losses in the following decade.

But they pushed back.

As the theme song of a certain show given life through Korrasami's triumph says: "We're gonna win in the end."

And you can trace it here. If ever you feel frightened or terrified of the future, look to this light. Look to this fortress. Look to these ladies, given life by white men who had nothing to gain for this and no idea if it could work, and know that this is where a tide turned. And remember that Rebecca Sugar, Dana Terrace, and so many others used their own experiences to keep pushing forward.

Hi everyone! This December will mark the 10th anniversary of Korra and Asami walking hand in hand into the Spirit Portal and changing the animation game forever. Korrasami means so much to so many people, so let's give them the celebration they deserve💖

Here's a general idea of what to expect and when:

February 1st - April 30th: Prompt Submission. Let me know what kind of prompts you'd like to see! Send me a message here and I'll add it to the list.

May: Prompt Voting. Depending on how many prompt ideas are submitted, this could take one week or a few weeks. We'll see when we get there!

June - December 14th: Long stretch of time during which I'll be on my hands and knees begging you not to forget this event is a thing, and you can brainstorm and work on your submissions!

December 15th - December 21st: Korrasami Week!!!

Rules and Guidelines:

1. What's allowed? Pretty much anything! Artwork, fanfiction, gifsets, headcanons, analysis/meta, memes, etc. are all welcome, as long as they're your own work and are Korrasami-focused.

2. Explicit content is fine, but the characters need to be adults, and everything depicted MUST be consensual.

3. Please abide by Tumblr's guidelines about explicit content, otherwise there's a chance Tumblr might delete your submission! If you're not sure, you can always post your work to another site (AO3, twitter, etc.) and then link to it here. All explicit content posted and reblogged here will be tagged "nsft" so be sure to block that tag if you'd like to filter out such content!

4. No whitewashing, racism, misogyny, transphobia, ableism, or other bigotry of any kind.

5. When submitting visual or audio media, please include a description either in ALT text or in the body of the post itself.

6. Other characters and relationships from The Legend of Korra are welcome, but your submission should be primarily about Korrasami.

7. Be kind. No criticism ("constructive" or otherwise) of other people's work unless the creator explicitly requests it. If you don't like something, just keep scrolling!

8. Follow the prompts if you can! They're meant to be helpful, but if you get inspired by something else entirely, please feel free to submit whatever you make!

9. Tag for content warnings if you think something might be triggering.

We're doing Korrasami Secret Santa for 2024!! (I did copy this from Korrasami Secret Santa 2024. Always will!! ;DDDD!!). 7 YEARS AND KICKING BABEY LET'S GO!! ;DDDD!! ❤️❤️❤️

The rules are the same:

Korrasami creators will be able to gift one another with Secret Santa gifts. Whether it be fics, art, videos, animations…the fun’s all there! (It doesn’t have to be holiday-themed! It can be whatever you want :)

The Process:

This Secret Santa exchange will be done through drawnames.com, which is a Secret Santa Name Generator. You’ll need your email for this, and you can message me it directly on Tumblr (I’ll gather everyone’s names up, and put them into the generator when it’s time to draw names.)

The due date to sign up is 11:59 PM Nov 29, 2024 PDT (I’d like everyone to have ample time to do their Secret Santa gifts). :)

Most likely, you’ll need to make an account on drawnames.com (you don’t need to, but it’s recommended.  When you get to writing your Wish List on there, under ‘Hobbies and Interests’, make two different lists: One for ‘Fic Requests’, the other for ‘Art Requests’. If a writer draws your name, you’ll have a suggestion for what you want them to write. If an artist draws your name, they’ll have an idea of what to create! (Also, originally, this project only had fanfic and fanart- but if anyone can contribute any other talents, that’d be swell!)

Example: Fic Request- I want Korra and Asami cuddling at home with a fireplace!

Art Request: I want Korrasami going otter-penguin sledding!

The fic and art requests can be the same, or they can be different. Please limit it to one, or if you can’t choose, then two options. You can also note things that you don’t want (i.e. No smut or NSFW work!). You can be as specific as you wish.

Also, everyone else! We recognize that there may be people in the fandom who don’t create content, but still want to contribute! @lamftw​ came up with these great ideas four years ago, if you’d still like to participate in the Secret Santa. You can:

Create Korrasami memes! The more memes, the better :)

Share your favorite Korrasami headcanons! We’d love to hear them.

Share your favorite artwork/fanfic!

Share your favorite moment from LoK or share how much Korrasami means to you.

Create Korrasami memes, write a sweet holiday message/ note of appreciation :)

Also, we can all show some love to our favorite creators, to Bryke, Janet Varney, and Seychelle Gabriel (the voice of Korra and Asami, respectively). :)

When everyone has signed up, I’ll put all the names into the Secret Santa Name Generator. You should get an email, asking you to join the Secret Santa exchange. Just click ‘Join Group’, and you’re good! Once everyone has joined, the names will then be drawn, and you’ll get your chosen individual (you’ll get an email for this too). Please remember to check your email on Dec 1; we cannot draw names unless everyone has joined the Secret Santa group!

The reveal will be on Dec 19, 2024 (the 10TH KORRASAMI ANNIVERSARY!! ;DDDD!!). Post your work on Tumblr, and tag the person you got, so they’ll know what lovely work they got! Also, please tag ‘Korrasami Secret Santa’ so we can save these posts for the future :).
