OK so I’m gonna just talk about Goldenloin for a bit because Sir Fucksalot has given me many thoughts about life and shit

some background: I started out reading the Nimona comic, and was super hyped when the movie got released. I’m Korean, living in North America, and also queer and genderfucked which is probably relevant to this

ANYWAY

A lot of people have talked about the Model Minority Myth so far, but I wanted to talk about something else: Specifically, his complicity in other’s oppression, and how he uses his lack of choice in his privilege to justify his actions.

In that one scene: “A direct descendant of Gloreth? I never asked for that!” He’s actually really accurately portraying a lot of the conflicting feelings about being both privileged and Asian: It’s the recurring thought I’ve had so many times:

“Look: The only reason why I have this privilege in society is because of my parents’ horrible amounts of pressure, and the pressure their parents put on them, in order to not get literally crushed by it: I never asked for that! Why should I care if other POC are suffering?” 

It’s about knowing that your position is horrible, and comes with thousands of sacrifices (especially when you consider the subtext that he’s had to hide his relationship with Boldheart from the media), but not being able to use that for the process of liberation?.

It’s about ignoring all of the ways in which you’re still not allowed to live freely (the poverty rates for queer Asian folx, the rates of suicide, the rates of illness, abuse).

It’s a constant struggle for me to avoid that train of thought: The “I don’t care,” the “it’s not my fault, because I never asked to live here,” the “What could I possibly do?” the “I better stay with this Institution, then, and not try to run away” 

So in a way it was nice to see that, in the end, he (sorta) stood up for other people, himself and his values? Or something? I don’t know?

(Lol I do think that they absolutely fucked up his character growth in the end: They should have had a more coherent theme for his actions near the end of the movie, but I still love this character... If I were in charge of the movie, I’d definitely make sure he gets a better arc to go with that incredibly monologue near the middle that was sadly played off for comedic effect... if I were in charge of his ending, i would have made him resist the institution much more quickly, because he really didn't change much until legit the last minute, and they never quite explained why??? )

Yes, it is a children’s movie, and I’m probably getting a bit too worked up about this. But still... let me cook ig?

No. 8- Old Boy, 2003.⁠⠀ "Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone." One of the most impactful films of my early 20's. Really put me onto Korean cinema. As a fan of unique fight sequences in movies- this one took it to a whole new level. The six minute no cut hallway fight was one the best fight scenes ever filmed. Short & Sweet (Korean Special)

Today is a lazy Sunday, which is exactly how I am feeling about this blog and decided to do a bit of revamping. I know there is not much traffic readers because I wanted to see if this would be a new devoted hobby of mine (I have been notoriously been watching and bingeing on Terrace House and NBA games following the Milwaukee Bucks). This post is a Korean special and prepared one.

I’ve been getting excited about my trip to Taiwan and Korea so today I decided to go to Lidcombe and explore it. My little knowledge on Korea is of the following:

Kimchi is some chilli cabbage snack.

Kim Jong Un has nuclear warheads and is pure evil.

Koreans have very WHITE skin (maybe I’m just jealous but why is it so white? Why?).

I decided to head to Lidcombe - this one of the suburbs along with Strathfield has a large Korean demographic (15.4% of the population according to Wikipedia) which means out of 100 people that walk past you in this suburb approximately 15 of them should be Korean (I guess there was purpose to attending math tutoring after all). I also noticed a lot of cool cafes and restaurants here and let me tell you - the Korean cafe game is strong and creative, which I will talk about later in this post. 

Oh yes I almost forgot - the real reason which is to be exposed Koreans and their culture before the my trip.

The first stop was a spontaneous one, walking around on one side of the station I stumbled across called Joh Eun Nal (maybe its named after the guy named John when you translate it) where I ordered a stone pot bim-bim-bap which was quite tasty, quick and cheap at $13. They got a whole range of Korean dishes from buckwheat noodles, kimchi fried rice, fried chicken, ramen and spicy soups. I would recommend it for a solo eat, couples or small groups (1-4 people).

The next place I’ve been curious about and read that they have an interesting decor (see pictures below) and it is both a florist and cafe - literally across the road I wanted to find a place to do some planning for my upcoming trip to Tasmania. I ordered a small long black, at a low, low price of $4 - it had a nice cold roasted brew taste. The place also features free wifi as well (great for the video streaming like NBA... ) A great place to meet people, first date or just doing some work on your portable device - here is a link for those who are interested:

Following from the introduction, there is something about these Korean Cafes, they have it all planned out from the products, service, ambience. Aside from the coffees, the freshly bought and made cakes to the friendly welcoming service - you are greeted upon walking in/out of these places - (“yeoboseyo” which means hello and “joh-eun halu doeseyo” which means have a nice day - no i don’t know any korean). The ambience and sophistication of these places makes you stay longer and buy more!

Anyway after finishing listing ideas and making bookings for my Tasmania trip - the final stop was the Smelly Cheesecake, I guess the first thing you think of and are impressed by is the cakes here as well as the attractive decor. Pumping an endless playlist of Korean genre music (they also played some familiar pop like Taylor and Ava Max… oh she’s sweet by a psycho na na nana.. Ok i’ll stop) yes I told myself I’m going to do this blog post! Look up more places to book in Tasmania! A few of these Koreans are looking at me deciphering if I am Korean or do I speak Korean. One thing is for sure - I will need to get a pocket Korean language book soon and maybe learn some dance moves too but I’m saying no to the facial surgery and make-up. Until next time...

i have this idea for a superhero: “the unburied gay” 

basically the whole point is that this hero has realized that every part of the plot is trying to kill them, right??? and mysteriously, all the arrows gravitate towards them, all the fire bends towards them, as if the plot is just trying to make them kick the bucket.

so: the whole point is that the character ends up becoming, essentially, the best tank of all time? like how in video games, you need someone to absorb hits? this motherfucker gets amazing at dodging, blocking, and avoiding dangers, that they eventually put a giant target on their chest, just to prove a point.

Popular Korean beauty YouTuber Dawn Lee has passed away. On May 30 KST, Ice Creative's CEO Kim Eun Ha shared on Instagram the regrettable news that the beauty creator passed away earlier that day.
