Smokeless: As part of my upcoming retrospective at the @hobanartrium Museum in South Korea, I’ve been commissioned by Curator, Cecilia Jo, to create a series of photographs specifically for the exhibit. Although a Korean theme was suggested, the approach to the concepts was up to me. My first thought out of the box was to reference Korean and Japanese anime; a genre of animation I’ve had a long love affair with, dating back to the days of Speed Racer. It continued through my parenting years, getting to experience a whole new generation of anime through the eyes of my daughter. (She and I would see a select few over, and over, and over again.) I decided I wanted the visual complexion of the series to be inspired by the characters, costumes and styling in the animated films I adore. But, what would the messages be? In stepped Jo, who introduced me to Korean folklore and idioms. It’s within those stories and proverbs that I found the whimsy and lightness consistent with my own sensibilities and aspirations. Much like the sayings and anecdotes I grew up with, these “rules to live by” are meant to inspire us in living life consciously, and with good intentions for ourselves, as well as for others. Besides, I really didn’t feel comfortable interpreting ancient Korean writings, being a Westerner, and all. That said, these messages, although universal in meaning, are things that are important to me. They are subjects that are close to my heart. The bottom line is, these are suggestions we, as a species, can all understand and hopefully employ. So, first up is this “suggestion” titled, Smokeless, that begs the question- What would the world be like with more butterflies in the air than pollutants? Can you imagine what that would be like? Lastly, there are some amazing people who helped make this series happen and want to acknowledge their contributions to the project. Thank you @gilleanmcleod @thewakingspirit @sharkmeister1609 @mahrvellous @lifeofbecktoria @absofruitely @anthonynex @nexstudios I could not have done it without you. #moretocome #koreanfolklore #koreanidioms @_sidecarww_ (at Gwangmyeong) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTkRATgHEOB/?utm_medium=tumblr

In Korean, we don’t say “spider web”, we say #거미줄 (“spider line”) or #거미집 (“spider house”). While both words mean spider web in English, 거미줄 can also be used to talk about the specific threads within a spider web (“거미집의 *섬세한 거미줄*” - the *delicate threads* of a spider web). •🕸 The corresponding verbs are also different. A. 거미가 거미줄을 치다. - A spider spins (threads for) a web. B. 거미가 거미집을 짓다. - A spider builds a web (house). •🕷 In general, 거미줄 치다 is used more commonly than 거미집 짓다. •🕸 “입에 거미줄 치다." is an idiom (관용어) and "거미도 줄을 쳐야 벌레를 잡는다." is a proverb (속담). . . . . #fluentkorean #koreanidioms #koreanproverbs #koreansayings #koreanculture #koreanlanguage #koreanverbs #koreanvocabulary https://www.instagram.com/p/B_Ub-FFhdux/?igshid=11dlchxdmzurp
