I felt very sad today but treated myself to some yummy things like this vanilla cream cake thingie. It was very good and I ate it while I read Jane Eyre.

Modu Café, 5805 York Blvd, Unit A, Los Angeles (Highland Park), CA 90042
Tumblr media
Modu Café recently opened and it’s clearly the hot spot in Highland Park. Their baked on-site Korean pastries (cookies, madeleines, mochi cake, mochi muffin, mochi brownie, milk cream bun, cakes, tarts) are so popular that you have to get there early to snag one and there’s a limit of four pastries per person. Some of the pastries are gluten-free.
For drinks, they serve drip coffee, flash brew coffee, espresso drinks, tonics, teas (ceremonial matcha, hojicha, Korean loose leaf teas). Adding a cream top is an option. For milk, they have whole milk, almond, and oat. They’re currently serving Counter Culture Coffee.
Cappuccino ($5): Made with care, pretty foam art, fairly bitter aftertaste
Black Sesame Mochi Cake Bar ($6): really good, very chewy like mochi, nutty, and not too sweet. I would definitely get it again
Modu Café moved into a new building. The décor is simple and clean, white and light wood. Street parking was easy to find. Finding a place to sit may prove a bigger challenge. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Service was very polite.

Smoking Tiger, 15545 Whittier Blvd, Whittier, CA 90603, Score: 43/50
Tumblr media
Smoking Tiger is a Korean bakery in a strip mall in Whittier. They have a wide variety of baked goods and lots of coffee and tea drinks, including Korean drinks.
Score: 43/50
Food: 4/5 – Freshly baked offerings include cookies, scones, croissants (Nutella, guava, almond, matcha pistachio), financiers, cream cheese garlic bread, Basque cheesecakes, etc. They invented a cross between a cookie and a scone. The baked goods are less sweet. They’re good but I wouldn’t say that they’re fantastic.
Coffee: 5/5 – They serve espresso drinks, signature drinks, Jeju matcha, and Korean drinks like the banana milk latte and Korean honey oat.  It looks like they have their own coffee (coffee that is roasted for them or that they roast themselves). They’re known for their Jeju matcha drinks. My latte was quite good! As good as what you’d get at a good coffeehouse.
Wi-fi: 5/5 – Free, unlimited, seemed fast
Ambiance: 5/5 – Spacious, lots of seats
Noise: 3/5 – Loud music but otherwise quiet
Plugs: 3/5 – Some along the wall
Parking: 5/5 – Park as long as you want in the strip mall
Comfort: 5/5 – Chairs are padded, lots of two top tables
Bathroom: 5/5 – Two restrooms
Art: 3/5 – None, framed pictures of their drinks
Tips: Coffee beans and coffee accessories for sale. They sell some of their own merch.

Hanyang Studio officially updates on Wuju Bakery’s Release Date
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
🛸 Wuju Bakery’s (WB) release date is being pushed back to the second half of the year
🛸 WB will consist of eight episodes with a running time of 50-minutes each
🛸 This is no longer a KBL web drama, but rather is now a regular drama
🛸 There’s no confirmed platform that WB will air on yet
🛸 The release of all promotional material is also pushed back as well
🛸 CGI is taking the longest amount of time, causing the release schedule to be pushed back.
On the bright side, Wuju Bakery will be the first KBL with a full-length drama run time. Prior to this, I believe The Eighth Sense had been the longest KBL with a 36-minute per episode average.

Harucake, 3450 W 6th St, Ste 107, Los Angeles (Koreatown), CA 90020
Tumblr media
Harucake makes the cutest minimalist, low sugar (Asian sweet), organic milk cream cakes. The cake flavors (e.g., chocolate earl grey, strawberry milk cream, mugwort injeolmi) rotate but I believe all the cakes feature genoise (sponge cake) and layers of milk cream. Slices start at $13. They also have scones, egg tarts, and drinks (espresso drinks, milk, matcha drinks). Matcha drinks are made with organic ceremonial grade matcha.
There were two types of yogurt cake: summer peach (vanilla genoise, homemade peach compote, lemon yogurt cream) and green grape (vanilla genoise, lemon yogurt cream, fresh green grape).
Egg tart: Really good, different too – the crust was thicker but still crispy, the thick eggy custard caramelized nicely. And it wasn’t too sweet.
Green grape yogurt cake ($14): The vanilla genoise cake was light, fluffy, and tender. There were three layers of cake and two layers of milk cream. The entire cake is also covered in milk cream. The grapes were sweet and fresh. The lemon yogurt is subtle and actually tastes like yogurt. It was a big slice of cake but because it was light and not too sweet, it was easy to finish. The flavors are subtle.
Harucake’s sign is hard to spot. It’s in the strip mall with Boba Time. There is parking but it’s valet only. Parking in that area is tough. The shop is very cute with limited seating.
4.5 out of 5 stars.
