The bass of the party thrummed through the floor, vibrating through the soles of your boots as you sat perched on the edge of a crowded couch, lost in your thoughts. The music was loud, but the nagging feeling in your chest drowned out every beat, every laugh, every voice that tried to cut through the haze in your mind. The house was packed with people in various costumes—vampires, witches, and superheroes—but none of them felt as real or as overwhelming as the sinking feeling that had been eating at you for days now.

Your friends surrounded you, all smiles and laughter, but you couldn’t bring yourself to join them, not when your thoughts were consumed by one person who wasn’t by your side.

Jungkook.

The boy who had once been the center of your world now felt like he was slipping through your fingers. He was somewhere across the room, dressed in his all-too-perfect vampire costume, surrounded by a group of people you barely knew. You spotted him by the drinks table, throwing his head back in laughter at something a girl said—someone you didn’t recognize. And it wasn’t the first time you’d seen him with her tonight.

A sharp pang of jealousy twisted in your stomach.

You tried to shake it off. You didn’t want to be that person, the one who got irrationally jealous over small things, over innocent interactions. You knew Jungkook loved you—he told you all the time—but there was something that had changed between you two lately. It was subtle at first, but it had been building for weeks.

He had been distant, less present, caught up in his own world, his own friends. The attention he used to shower you with had been redirected, seemingly spread thin among new faces you weren’t a part of. Maybe it was college, or maybe it was something else—something more painful, like the fading of the once-intense connection you shared.

It felt like he was drifting away, and you didn’t know how to reach him anymore.
