How to Choose the Best Fishing Charter in Kailua Kona
Kailua Kona, nestled on Hawaii’s Big Island, is a renowned destination for fishing enthusiasts. Its calm waters and rich marine biodiversity attract anglers from around the world seeking unforgettable fishing adventures. But with numerous options available, how do you choose the best fishing charter in Kailua Kona? This comprehensive guide will help you navigate the process, ensuring you book a trip tailored to your preferences and skill level.
Tumblr media
Why Kailua Kona is a Fishing Paradise
1. Unique Geographical Advantages
Kailua Kona’s waters are remarkably calm thanks to the protection offered by the Big Island's volcanic mountains. This makes fishing accessible and enjoyable even for beginners. Additionally, the deep waters close to shore provide a habitat for various prized fish species, such as marlin, tuna, and mahi-mahi.
2. Year-Round Fishing Opportunities
Unlike many fishing destinations, Kailua Kona offers exceptional yearly fishing opportunities. Whether you're planning a summer getaway or a winter escape, the waters here rarely disappoint.
What to Consider When Choosing a Fishing Charter
1. Define Your Goals and Expectations
Are You a Novice or an Experienced Angler?
Novices: Look for charters offering hands-on guidance, friendly crew members, and family-friendly experiences.
Experienced Anglers: Seek out specialized charters focusing on big-game fishing or specific species.
What Kind of Fish Do You Want to Catch?
Popular species in Kailua Kona include:
Blue Marlin: Known as the king of game fish, perfect for thrill-seekers.
Mahi-Mahi: A favorite for its beauty and delicious taste.
Ahi (Yellowfin Tuna): Challenging and rewarding for experienced anglers.
What Experience Are You Seeking?
Sport Fishing: Test your skills against some of the ocean’s most formidable species.
Family Adventures: Enjoy a leisurely outing with light tackle and smaller catches.
Eco-Tours: Combine fishing with dolphin spotting or snorkeling.
2. Research the Charter Company
Reputation Matters
Start with reviews on platforms like TripAdvisor, Yelp, and Google. Look for consistent praise regarding the crew's professionalism, the condition of the boat, and overall experience.
Licensing and Safety
Ensure the charter is licensed and adheres to all safety regulations. Check for U.S. Coast Guard certifications and inquire about onboard safety equipment.
Expertise of the Crew
A knowledgeable captain and crew can make or break your trip. Experienced professionals not only improve your chances of a great catch but also ensure your safety and enjoyment.
Tumblr media
Key Features to Evaluate in a Fishing Charter
Tumblr media
1. Boat Type and Size
The size and style of the boat should match the size of your group and the type of fishing you plan to do.
Small Boats (20–30 feet): Ideal for solo anglers or couples.
Mid-Sized Boats (30–40 feet): Suitable for groups or families.
Large Yachts (40+ feet): Perfect for luxury trips and large groups.
2. Trip Duration
Fishing charters in Kailua Kona typically offer:
Half-Day Trips (4–5 hours): Great for beginners or families with young children.
Full-Day Trips (8–10 hours): Better for targeting big-game fish.
Custom Trips: Tailored to your specific needs and goals.
3. Fishing Techniques Offered
Different charters specialize in various fishing styles:
Trolling: Ideal for catching marlin and tuna.
Bottom Fishing: Perfect for reef fish like snapper and grouper.
Fly Fishing: A niche option for those with experience in this technique.
4. Amenities and Comfort
Consider your comfort level, especially for longer trips. Look for charters offering:
Air-conditioned cabins
Restrooms
Ample seating
Fishing gear and bait included
Cost Considerations
1. Understanding Pricing
Fishing charter costs in Kailua Kona vary widely based on:
Trip Duration: Full-day charters cost more than half-day trips.
Group Size: Private charters are pricier but offer a more personalized experience.
Boat Amenities: Luxury boats come at a premium.
Expect to pay anywhere from $400 to $1,500+ depending on these factors.
2. Tips for Budget-Friendly Options
Shared Charters: Split costs with other anglers.
Off-Peak Season Discounts: Book during quieter times of the year.
Package Deals: Some companies offer multi-day discounts.
How to Book Your Ideal Fishing Charter
1. Start Early
Popular charters can book up months in advance, especially during peak seasons.
2. Contact the Charter Directly
Speak with the company to clarify:
What’s included in the price
Fishing policies (catch-and-release vs. keeping your catch)
Cancellation policies
3. Prepare the Necessary Documents
Ensure you have any required fishing licenses or permits. Many charters handle this for you, but it’s worth confirming.
What to Pack for Your Fishing Trip
1. Essential Items
Sunscreen (reef-safe preferred)
Sunglasses and a hat
Light, breathable clothing
Non-slip shoes
Snacks and water
2. Optional Extras
Camera or GoPro for memorable shots
Motion sickness medication
Cooler for your catch (if allowed)
Final Thoughts
Choosing the best fishing charter in Kailua Kona requires thoughtful planning and consideration of your personal preferences. From defining your fishing goals to researching charters and preparing for the trip, every step contributes to an unforgettable adventure. I’ve been procrastinating long enough with these boys, so I’m just gonna post ‘em both at once:
PHOTO4- Yuzu
So according to the old notes, Yuzu is the group’s composer and resident scatterbrain. ^^; He’s nice and he’s sweet, but he’s also kind of a clumsy, forgetful, disoriented mess. Apparently he and Mazuma first met when Yuzu hit him with a car?? XD I’d like to try to illustrate that…
Anyway, as paradoxical as it sounds, I think it would be fitting for Yuzu to also be the one who organizes things, and makes sure the group is on time for interviews and tour dates and stuff like that. Like, being aware of his own limitations has made him understand the true value of keeping schedules and lists and checking them regularly. He may forget to charge his phone or look both ways before crossing the street , but for all the “really important” things he’s got a system. ^^
PHOTO4- Konamon
Introducing the final member of the PHOTO4, Konamon! He’s a clearfin lionfish (Pterois radiata) and the group’s lyricist.
According to my notes, he really enjoys writing sappy, lovey-dovey songs despite his serious, almost apathetic demeanor. Not necessarily because he’s secretly a hopeless romantic on the inside, but because he just happens to enjoy cute things, and his music is how he expresses that. ^^
Anyway, Kona’s not really as emotionless as he seems, in fact he’s probably the most emotional of the four, it just doesn’t show up…consistently (there’s probably a neurological term for this; I just don’t know what it is). In some situations he remains stone-faced no matter what he’s feeling, in other situations he smiles uncontrollably. I find it endearing~

Intro
Gravel riding had become much more popular over the past few years. The clear advantage is getting off busy roads and onto less traveled, often out of the way, dirt/gravel and single track routes. Several of our riding friends who also enjoy bike touring started looking at bike packing on gravel as an alternative. Somehow, a group of us with ties to past cross-country rides decided that we’d enjoy doing a multi-day bike packing trip together out West. And with that, commitments were made nine months in advance of this trip.
The crew includes Steve (that’s me), David, Ed, and Jose. Cumulatively, we have about 6 months of bike touring between us. Our touring miles probably exceed 7,500. However, for all of us, bike packing is a new thing. As of right now, two of us have tried it. I’ve got 4 days and 160 miles in the saddle and Jose has 2 days and 75 miles under his belt. We are all riding bikes with which we’ve never done extensive trips. As a matter of fact, all of our bicycles are new. Regardless, we’ve done our research and we are prepared for some high adventure.
So what are we riding you ask… I’ve got a Surly Ogre with a Moloko handlebar. All steel. 29 inch wheels. David is riding a Kona Unit X with a flatbar handlebar. Also steel on 29 inch wheels. Ed and Jose will be riding true gravel rigs with Salsa Cutthroats. Carbon. Drop bar handlebars. None of the bikes have suspension. It’s going to be interesting to compare bikes along the way!
Our gear will be carried in a variety of bags connected to our handlebars, forks, frames, and rear racks. Like previous trips we will carry all that we need, we hope. We’re self supported so we’ll have tents and sleeping bags, food and stoves, water purifiers, basic tools and parts for in field repairs, and clothing necessary to protect us from the elements.
The weather could vary greatly. We need to be ready for hot and cold as well as rain and snow. Fires have already been an issue to the north of our start so smoke could be a problem. Detours due to forest fires are also a possibility.
I’m sure you’re wondering where we are going. One of the most notable routes for gravel riding is the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. It runs ~2700 miles between Banff, Alberta to Antelope Wells, New Mexico. We are going to do the first 550 miles. We will start in Banff and head south. Ten days later, we will head west at Seeley Lake leaving the official route for our finish in Missoula on Day 11 or so.
We expect to camp most nights. Often times it will be primitive camping (think no toilets or potable water) in the wilderness. For two days we will be riding the Flathead alternative route in British Columbia known as the Serengeti of North America for its abundant wildlife and remoteness. Other days we may have no services (groceries, etc.) or very limited services. Our mid-trip rest day will probably be in Whitefish, MT where we can enjoy some r&r, assuming we can find hotel with vacancies.
All along the way we will get great views of the Rockies, crossing the continental divide multiple times. We will also pass through several small towns, some will be touristy this time of year while others will be more resource extraction-focused (coal, logging, quarries, etc.). Alberta, British Columbia, and Montana all have great natural beauty and significant exploitable natural resources.
With that… wish us luck!

They Are Coming For Your Coffee Now
KAREN TOWNSEND 6:40 PM on January 22, 2024
Swiss banker and World Economic Forum “agenda contributor”, Hubert Keller, is coming for your coffee. You know why. The climate agenda.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It will never be enough with these people. Do you put milk in your coffee? That’s a whole different battle. Cows, you know, produce methane when they fart and that’s not good for the climate. Carbon dioxide is necessary for life. Green plants feed on carbon dioxide and produce oxygen as a by-product. Yet, climate activists want to take as much carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere as possible, thinking that atmospheric carbon dioxide traps heat. That causes man-made global warning, their reasoning goes. They want to limit emissions of carbon dioxide.
One way of limiting emissions is to go after agricultural production and practices. In this case, it is the production of coffee. Keller spoke out about coffee production as a culprit in climate warming. He should pick on something else. Farmers are responsible people who conserve the land and keep it healthy to produce crops. Coffee producers are the same. I was once in Hawaii and toured a coffee plantation in Kona. That was back in the 1990s and even then a big part of the message was that it was an environmentally-friendly operation.
This guy’s tweet leads me to think about Keller speaking to the arrogant elites who wish to rule the world. There is a lot of hypocrisy among them. One example is that they preach about the use of fossil fuels, yet many of them arrive in private jets for the annual gathering in Davos. Look no further than John Kerry for extreme hypocrisy. Biden’s climate envoy lives one way while expecting regular people to live a drastically different way. Eat bugs and live without electricity, peasants.
House Republicans introduced legislation to suspend funding for the World Economic Forum.
“No funds available to the Department of State, the United States Agency for International Development, or any other department or agency may be used to provide funding for the World Economic Forum,” the bill simply reads. The legislation was introduced by Rep. Scott Perry, R-Penn., along with others, including Tom Tiffany, R-Wis., and Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Az. “The World Economic Forum doesn’t deserve one cent of American funding, and it’s past time we defund Davos,” Perry said in a press release. “The Defund Davos Act would ensure that U.S. tax dollars are not funding the World Economic Forum and their reset on our way of life. I thank Congressman Perry for leading this important effort,” Tiffany said.
Sounds good to me. The annual event is a bunch of reporters among the elites who get out whatever stories the rich and powerful want to get out. The virtue-signaling is off the charts. What does it all accomplish? Nothing as far as regular Americans can see. It sounds like a luxury vacation in Switzerland. Why are American taxpayers paying the way for John Kerry and many others to go?
The Heritage Foundation president accepted an invitation to speak in a panel discussion. I don’t think those in attendance enjoyed hearing what he had to say.
Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts was offered a spot to participate in a panel discussing what to expect from a possible Republican presidency. He took the opportunity to criticize the WEF for supporting globalism and socialism and said that members of the next conservative presidential administration should reject all of the ideas being proposed at the WEF.
The world elites are dreading the thoughts of another Trump presidency. Maybe Mr. Keller is one of those people.
You aren’t getting my coffee, Hubert. Let’s talk about the champagne, ok?
The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, brought together 3,000 participants from around the globe. That included 1,600 business leaders, 350 heads of state and government ministers, and hundreds of academics, civil society leaders, and entrepreneurs. It was an elite affair as always, with sky-high lodging fees, champagne nightcaps, and chances to see and be seen by people holding some of the most influential jobs on the planet. A speech by Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy was a reminder of the world’s precariousness When we asked Paul Knopp, the CEO of KPMG US, what he came to Davos feeling most worried about, he echoed a common refrain heard in Davos this week. “Last year, for me, it would have been the economy. I’m a little more concerned right now about the number of geopolitical concerns around the world that could create shocks,” he said.
Surely the production of champagne must stop. Those grapes must help the coffee beans destroy the ozone, right? On a more serious note, the world is on fire and the elites have noticed. Too bad there isn’t a strong leader in the White House. There is concern about democracy, especially with so many regions holding elections oversea.
With elections this year in countries that are home to a combined 4.2 billion people, democratic leaders are worried about the threats of fascism, nationalism, disinformation, and other number of other risks for free societies. “We are now reaching a watershed moment: 2024 will be the year when European countries and the EU will be in a position to decide if we want to be sovereign or not,” French president Emmanuel Macron said, addressing just one region where elections are coming up soon.
When Trump primarily focuses on the United States, he is criticized for being an isolationist. You can bet that European leaders are nervous that Trump may be moving back into the White House. They are afraid of him and he intimidates them into such moves as paying their pledges to NATO and removing the U.S. from worthless international agreements like the Paris Climate Agreement.
The House Republicans may not be successful with their legislation, especially since many lawmakers make the trip to Davos, but it’s a good idea.
Progressives will not rest until they have removed every shred of joy from our lives.

Kona’s Underwater Thrill: Unraveling The Secrets of Whale Travel in Kona
Tumblr media
Throughout the ages whales have fascinated humans with their behaviors and a few places around the world like Kona, Hawaii draws in a huge number of visitors from across the globe who love to go on a whale watch tour. The Hawaiian waters are very popular for sightings of humpback whales one of the largest whale species.
The humpback whales travel the longest migratory distance and the annual migration of humpback whales is the time when people throng the waters of Kona to observe them. In this article, we will unravel the secrets of whale travel in Kona.
The Humpback Backyard
The waters of the Pacific are very popular for their abundant marine species and primarily because of humpback whales who throng the waters in large numbers because it is their annual migration route. Many whale watchers term the Pacific as the “Humpback Highway” because of this annual migration cycle.
During the winter months, the water of the coast of Alaska drops below the freezing point making it difficult for the humpback whales to adjust to the changing weather. This is when they start their migration to the warmer waters of Hawaii which becomes their backyard for the winter months.
Now, Kona’s strategic location in the waters of the Pacific makes it a favorite spot for millennials who are interested in watching these gigantic creatures of the deep. In addition to that, humpback whales or for that matter any species of whale prefer calm & warm waters for giving birth & nursing their calves.
That is why tourists who are interested in observing the massive humpback whales are encouraged to visit Kona from December to April as these are the perfect times for whale watching.
Symphony of the Ocean
The male humpback whales are known for their singing abilities and you might be surprised to learn that the vocal sounds produced by them are heard miles away underwater and it can last for up to 20 minutes. Besides that, each humpback whale population has different vocalizations making it a unique trait of these whaling species.
These sounds produced by these whaling species serve as a mode of communication between them and the clear waters of Kona amplify these beautiful vocals making it a popular destination for audio research on whales. Moreover, your tour operator might provide you with a hydrophone to help you listen to the sounds made by the male humpbacks.
In addition to that, the vocals produced by these whales help in learning about their social dynamics & hierarchy of whale pods and also demonstrate their powerful communication abilities. Hearing these sounds produced by the male humpbacks is going to leave you mesmerized & with a lot of fascinating memories.
Breaching Action
One of the most fascinating attributes of whales is their breaching action which can leave anyone awestruck. In fact, during whale watching tours, the breaching behavior of humpback whales is one of the most awaited actions that tourists wait for with bated breath and Kona is the perfect destination to observe these whales at their best.
The breaching behavior displayed by whales might seem playful to you but it serves various purposes for them other than that like communicating with fellow companions or getting rid of parasites from their body. Many whale researchers also believe that these behaviors displayed by the whales also strengthen their social bonds.
Whenever you are out there on the seas trying to catch a glimpse of the whales making a breach from the surface, you mustn’t forget to carry a camera with you to capture these awe-inspiring moments.
Spy-Hopping Behavior
The spy-hopping is a typical behavior displayed by whales where they raise their head vertically above the water and scan their surroundings for any nearby boats or other marine creatures. This type of curious behavior is shown by humpback whales in the waters of Kona where there are many boats & plenty of other marine creatures.
Furthermore, the best thing about this behavior is that the calm & clear waters of Kona make it easy for visitors to spot the whales when they display this typical spy-hopping behavior.
Finally
The above-discussed factors are some of the most fascinating secrets associated with whale-watching tours in Kona, Hawaii. You must get in touch with your tour operator as soon as possible to get your tickets booked for the tour so that you get your desired dates.
