They like different foods but both enjoy tea and savory food, though they have a hard time finding foods they both love because of Komaru’s odd preferences.

They both like romance movies, some they watch in earnest some to make fun. Komaru cries more often when watching them

Komaru has more "being a person" skills down, like cooking and cleaning. Toko is actually a total mess when they first live together bc she's never really had to care before. She didn't have other people in her space so she kinda just left mess for the most part. Komaru starts teaching her stuff once they start living together, and Toko catches on pretty quickly. She's still not a great cook though, so usually Komaru cooks and Toko cleans afterwards

Komaru is awful to actually sleep with (snore, spread out, blanket hog) but great to cuddle (very soft, big spoon, hugs just the right tightness). Toko doesn't mind too much though

They are such a sun and moon couple to me... Komaru is so bright and cheerful and Toko is more reserved, but their light feeds into eachother and they make eachother brighter <3

They're both just fine with bugs actually! They both love Kameko

The way I see their first kiss/confession going down is a heat of the moment sort of thing. I think komaru kinda quietly accepts that she’d be pining forever because all outward signs point to toko never reciprocating. Meanwhile toko takes so goddamn long to come to terms with her feelings, and once she does she is convinced that komaru doesn't feel the same. So it eats away at her and builds tension between them until one day it boils over toko just goes for it in the middle of an argument

I have a lot of flower combinations I associate with them actually, but if its one flower for both, I think of violets bc they're very gay

They are VERY clingy. Toko is more shy about PDA, but unless there's a specific reason, you're unlikely to find one without the other at least nearby

They read together pretty often. But usually they read very different things next to eachother. Komaru does try to read one of Toko’s novels occasionally, and komaru eventually convinces toko to try one of her manga

Danganronpa and the Paranormal

Danganronpa is extravagant, from it's deliciously unhinged plot to it's refreshing psycho-pop aesthetic. Ontop of all this, the series contains some paranormal elements, which some players tend to forget about. In this post, I'll go through every instance of paranormal happenings in the series; this includes the first two games¹, the spin-offs and novels.

Spirits

Ghosts are a surprisingly reoccurrent theme in Danganronpa games. The most flagrant example is the revenant Komaru and Toko encounter in Ultra Despair girls: none other than Tokuichi Towa, the late father of Haiji and Monaca Towa. He appears and speaks to the girls, even revealing he has the ability to curse (though he refuses to do so, considering the act "lowly"). His death was caused by his own daughter, who ordered Monokumas to slash his throat after the man betrayed Junko. Tokuichi's soul is stuck in a tormentuous purgatory at the hands of Monaca, and thus, he begs the protagonists to stop the child (a feat which would probably lead to his soul being freed and moving on to the afterlife).

One might think this is the only case of revenants appearing in Danganronpa, but the first game might contain some as well. When considering that spirits hold the power of possession, it becomes clear that Chihiro Fujisaki and Kiyotaka Ishimaru might be victims of possession themselves. Regarding Chihiro, it's rather curious how his Alter Ego program emulates human-like behaviours and emotions. While this might simply be due to Chihiro's talent as the ultimate programmer, it is possible that a part of his spirit went on to possess his program, albeit in a subtle, barely conscious manner. Much less subtle and dubitable is the possession of Kiyotaka Ishimaru, who is overtaken by the ghost of Mondo Owada after the latter's execution. Taka reacts to his best friend's death by becoming deeply traumatized and entering a near-catatonic state, rendering his spirit feeble. Shortly after, he becomes white-haired, and exhudes a powerful, radiant energy in the form of a glowing aura. His behaviour, mood and even speech patterns begin to ressemble Mondo's. Note however that it stays at that - a ressemblance. The ultimate moral compass keeps a certain amount of restraint, by not daring to actually curse for example. One could blame this on a form of psychosis, or - the more likely option, ironically - possession. The following official artwork suggests as much.

One could argue that Hajime undergoes a comparable process at the end of the second game, when his spirit rejects that of Izuru Kamakura's, though this instance seems to be rather similar to an anime trope than something meant to be paranormal.

There's also a haunted grave at the Jabberwock Hospital in SDR2. However, since the island is apart of a simulation, it's likely that this is simply an addition of the Junko virus rather than a recreation of any "real" Jabberwock Island element.

Superstition

There are two types of superstitious forces in Danganronpa, the first being luck. As simple as it may be, it's a talent that proved itself to be a true function in the DR-verse. Makoto and Nagito both manage to use this "power" (though when it comes to Nagito, this tends to backfire at times). Both young men manage to have events unveil in their favor through the power of luck, despite not having any direct control over the talent. It's also known that Hope's Peak Academy's steering commitee even attempts to harvest this power through the Izuru Kamakura Project, in spite of scepticism surrounding the existence of luck. Regardless of such subjective opinions however, luck is undeniably real in the DR-verse.

Another superstition that's mostly present in the first game is clairvoyance. Yasuhiro Hagakure, the ultimate clairvoyant, is said to have a 30% success rate on his predictions. One turn out to be accurate (the first being about how Kiyotaka and Hifumi are the last victims of their killing game²) and the second is correct depending on the player's performance. In fact, if they fail at the last trial, they get the bad ending, which is a perfect display of a fate Hagakure predicted: him and Makoto fathering the children of the same woman (Aoi). Hiro's character is often portrayed as that of a shady con-man; these two true predictions however hint at the possibility of his powers being real.

Aliens

Not only is Yasuhiro Hagakure gifted with clairvoyance, he also had an encounter with an U.F.O. This U.F.O. (likely a flying saucer according to the artwork) flew to him one night, locked onto the hamburger he was eating with a ray of light, and then absorbed part of it before flying away. According to Hiro, whoever piloted the flying saucer wanted the beef from the burger (which aligns with the well-known trope of aliens stealing cows from fields). The scene is very much out-of-place and it's veracity is unconfirmed. It isn't the first or last time aliens appear in Danganronpa's universe.

Back in Kirigirisou, a parallel ending introduces the player to Rhinogradentias. Those aliens also appear in the third Togami novel³. They come in different shades of brown, with various specimens possessing diverse features; some have tentacles, others have hands, etc. These creatures are based off rhinogrades, or snouters, which are actual real-life mammals known for the fact that they "walk" on their long snouts. The Rhinogradentia are introduced in Kirigirisou as "super galaxy level invaders". They wish to take over planet Earth and get rid of of humans, which they deem too destructive and polluting. However, their limited intellect restricts them. Like the aliens Yasuhiro saw, they fly in U.F.O.s. The third volume of the Togami novel hints at their existence being purely theoretical, without any further confirmation.

Lastly, there is a group of aliens at the Jabberwock Hospital in SDR2, though this once again seems to be a gag set up by AI-Junko rather than any recreations from the real Jabberwock Island. They return in Danganronpa: Ultimate Summer Camp, once again as an easter-egg. The meaning of this scene, of these aliens standing next to an operating table, is very enigmatic.⁴

Notes:

Gundham Tanaka and his antics aren't included in this post, as he doesn't really have magic powers, but instead has Chūnibyō syndrome.

¹ I deliberately left out Killing Harmony, as it's parallel canon, and ontop of that it's events are confirmed to be in-game fiction. Hence, the paranormal events of V3 qualify as inauthentic.

² This first prediction concerns the 4th chapter. 4 is the number of death and bad luck in japanese numerology, fitting for the chapter with the most victims.

³ Kirigirisou's alternate endings are parallel canon. As for the Togami novels, whether or not they're canon is unconfirmed to this day.

⁴ I like to think there is some sort of hidden symbolism behind those aliens. In my opinion, it's related to Kamakura. There are 4 people in Monokuma masks, so perhaps they symbolize the steering commitee? I'm not sure what the aliens symbolize though. I like to think AI-Junko included the easter-egg as a nod to Hajime and his transformation.

Kirizono(kyoko x sayaka)- my personal fav from thh! They are so opposite attract, also bonus points for the male protagonists female love interest x female love interest 🤫 10/10!!

Kirihina (kyoko x aoi)- 7/10! They have potential and I think it’s a pretty cute and wholesome ship overall!! I personally prefer Sakura and aoi as a pair but I think aoi and kyokos personalities complement each others nicely!

Celesgiri(Celeste x Kyoko)- 9/10! They match each other’s aesthetic so nicely and they are so similar yet so different, it’s a nice pair! They both have pretty dark aesthetics and both are kinda mysterious in their own ways. I love how the dynamic is detective x liar, it’s a very interesting pairing overall! (celesgiri does it better than saiouma XD)

Fukagiri(Toko x Kyoko)- Tbh I don’t like or dislike this one I’m pretty neutral on it so 5/10! I can see their appeal but at the same time it makes sense it being a rather rare pairing, as they honestly work better platonically.

Kyoko x Sakura- honestly I’ve never seen anyone ship this and personally I think they’d be way better as friends! Also Aoi and Sakura are my OTP I have a hard time shipping them with anyone else😅 4/10!

Mukagiri (Mukuro x Kyoko)- honestly I kinda dig this! They’d be super interesting for sure and I see the appeal, they have similar personalities and it’s a villain x detective ordeal. 6/10!

Enogiri (Junko x Kyoko)- this one is kinda a guilty pleasure one for me😅 I just really enjoy the toxic Yuri dynamic, but in all practicality the would never work, I just think they are hot :] 6/10.

Celesaya (Celeste x Sayaka)- 6/10! They are also very opposites attract and I see the appeal! I don’t think they’d work out but I can see why people would like this one. :]

Celeshina (Celeste x Aoi)- 8/10! Tbh another guilty pleasure ship for me! They are so different from eachother yet Aoi has so much compassion for Celeste and she is a very supportive and kind girl. While on the other hand Celeste is very conceited and selfish, they are so different but look so cute together. :]

Celestoko (Celeste x Toko)- 4/10! Not the biggest fan but I don’t want to yuck another’s yum! I don’t think their personalities work together, but there’s worse lol!

Celeste x Sakura- Not a fan! 4/10, I could see them platonically as Sakura is such a sweetheart and kind to everyone, but otherwise they just don’t fit together.

Celeste x Mukuro- hm 4/10? Not sure how I feel about this one, I kinda like it in game but otherwise I think it’s kind of a boring pair. I don’t see any chemistry they are almost too similar haha.

Celesjunko (Celeste x Junko)- 8/10 hell yeah, They’d be hella evil together. They’d make an interesting pair, I sorta dig their dynamic.

Hinazono (Aoi x Sayaka)- 6/10! They’d be super cute friends, I can only really see this pair platonically!

Fukazono (Toko x Sayaka)- I kinda like this one! 7/10, they’d be super cute imo. I believe in lesbian Toko supremacy and I think she’s super cute with overly bubbly girls (cough cough komaru) yeah this one would be cute!

Sakura x Sayaka- super cute platonically! 6/10! They’d make great friends, I could see Sayaka hanging with her and Aoi!

Ikuzono- solid 9/10 I heart this one so much, my 2nd favorite Sayaka ship! I love opposites attract as I’ve previously stated and I also enjoy the male protagonists female love interest x love interest. :]

Enozono (Junko x Sayaka)- 8/10! More toxic Yuri!! Both stylish and beautiful, famous ladies! I enjoy.

Fukahina (Toko x Aoi)- 9/10! Super cute, Toko definitely had the hots for Aoi subconsciously. They’d be such cute enemies to lovers.

Sakuraoi (Sakura x Aoi)- ♾️/10 of course!! My favorite lesbian ship in all the DR games, they are my Roman Empire Oml.

Aoi x Mukuro- hm kinda an odd pairing 4/10! Maybe platonically!

Aoi x Junko- Bro they’d be hot ngl, but Hina is too nice for Junkos evil ahh. 5/10!

Toko x Sakura- 3/10, Toko was so cruel to Sakura during the game I could never ship that :(

Toko x Mukuro- Hm, once again I’m not sure how to feel about this one. 4/10? I don’t think they’d like eachother all that much. I can’t see any chemistry with these 2.

Toko x Junko- oh wow, I meannnn Toko definitely finds Junko very attractive especially her huge “assets”. I could see this as a one sided attraction and nothing more, maybe Junko would mess with her for that? 6/10.

Sakura x Mukuro- I think they’d be great friends 6/10! They both are super powerful, strong, athletic ladies! They could train together!

Sakura x Junko- no way haha, Sakura is way too kind. 4/10.

Mukuro X Junko- Haha no way, I can’t rate this one. I know this one is quite popular online due to the messed up dynamic and as much as I love toxic Yuri, they are twins and that’s a line I’m not willing to cross. Dark shipping dynamics can really be hit or miss, but I find these kind of pairings quite gross. Sorry if you feel differently haha!

Merch Monday comes 'round once again!

[Obligatory Ko-fi Link Because This Is A Post Where I Spent Real Person Money]

As always I forgot to do this several times, so there's plenty of backlog from this last month to get through. The Seasons of Despair zine came in today, and I've only got enough time to do one of these. So we'll hit the zine today, and everything else tomorrow!

So: Seasons of Despair!

TLDR; Aesthetically excellent! No major issues except the exclusion of some characters in the art, some more notable than others.

This is a "zine" only insomuch as it's creation project - actually, it's a calendar for 2024! It's more general than ship, so normally I wouldn't really cover it on this blog. But some of the merch is really cute, and I just think the whole project is a really cool idea!

I got the paper bundle, because I simply cannot justify to myself spending more than $50 on a zine except for, like, the DR WLW Zine, which I am legally and morally obligated to gather all of like a dragon with its hoard. That means none of the pins or charms.

EDIT: They've asked people not post the inside of the calendar, so the image that was here has been removed! If the stance changes it will be reinserted.

The actual calendar itself is just fine! Nothing special about the make. The art is all gorgeous. The birthday listings and the art around the bottom half are really nice touches - I lost most of those polls on Twitter, but I'm glad my girl Komaru made it. They managed to get almost every character with a canon birthday on the monthly art too (sorry Miaya)!

I have a total of two (2) issues with the calendar.

1. Jack isn't anywhere in this, even though Toko shows up multiple times, and their birthday is only listed under Toko. Which. Bummer. (Izuru is also just listed under Hajime, but he shows up in other art throughout the zine.)

2. There's a full THH spread, a major char UDG spread, and two full SDR2 spreads, but no V3 spread. The closest is ten characters, which isn't 16, and which has several characters mostly blocked behind others or barely visible. They all still get their faces on their birthday in the calendar itself, of course! But it's a bummer that the only sight of Angie, Ryoma, and Korekiyo is the back of their heads.

Other than that, I'm very happy with this! I'll be using it throughout the year, so we'll see very quickly if it holds up.

The little cherry stickers and this stretch goal print are the main reason I bought the paper merch instead of just the calendar! These both feature art by @axolotllotl, who is a blog favorite. The stickers are actually the shinier of the two, and are notably higher quality than the other sticker pages that came with the zine. We won't be going over the other stickers, but they're just more paper-y - you can tell a lot of care was put into these! (Not that I won't be using the other stickers. You KNOW I'm putting that heart eyes Monokuma in a strategic location.)

& I LOOOVE the print. It's actually on lower quality material than the stickers and the calendar, but that's not a bad thing! Every piece of this zine has slightly different quality, I assume for manufacturing reasons. There are no defects and the art is gorgeous - I love the way she draws Kyoko, it's so cute.

Generally, I'm pretty happy with this! It'll definitely see the most active use of any zines I own, especially since this blog celebrates the girls' birthdays. We'll see how it holds up long term!

Tokomaru for ship bingo?

I love Tokomaru so much ah. It basically is canon, as far as I am concerned; it’s at least very heavily implied, especially in some of the S interactions. I really love Toko’s development and how she actually forges a relationship with..anyone? It’s a sweet and interesting parallel to me because togami is similar in that way ; even if it’s interpreted as non-romantic, he forges a relationship with a Naegi as well, despite being so intolerable around most everyone else haha. Fukawa is a favorite character of mine…her aesthetics in UDG are peak and her design with Komaru really scratches an itch for me, I’d like to draw them. To me, I feel satisfied with how they were depicted so I’d have to be convinced to read fic about them? Like I love them a lot but my brain doesn’t tend to theorize9 or spend much time exploring their dynamic since it feels pretty fluffy. I like fluff but it’s usually not what really compels me so it’s one of those! Anyway I’d love to see more of them , for sure. They’re two characters who I think make each other more interesting.

I also really love these two. A lot. I will say my investment in them is rather confined to in game when I think about it, but I find their relationship to be very very heavily implied and intentional. I want better for both of them, it made me pretty emotional..

Looking back on it, I think Danganronpa is a series with lots of highs and lows. Enjoyment of each game depends on how you weigh these highs and lows.

For instance, I think DR1 has the least lows out of all the other games. It's pretty solid, and there isn't that much to complain about, but it can get a bit forgettable.

SDR2 was my favorite game in the series—despite it having more lows than DR1 (namely way more uncomfortable fanservice and that Chapter 3 trial was dumber), it also had a lot more highs to me (more emotional moments, better characters, more impactful ending/message).

UDG is a game that I think had great highs that could rival the rest of the series (Komaru and Toko's relationship/development being perhaps the best character dynamic in the series along with a pretty cool aesthetic and interesting villains) but the lows... 💀 I do not want to get into those lows, nope.

And then there's V3, which had some pretty nice highs (cool aesthetic/soundtrack, my favorite atmosphere in the series) but the lows really dragged down what could've been the best game in the series. (In my opinion, at least.) It's like they took every low in the previous games (gross fanservice/sexual humor, poorly written cases, confusing ending, weaker characters) and just amplified it.

In conclusion, the Danganronpa series has a lot to like, but I don't blame anyone for being too bothered by the lows because they can get pretty damn low. I wish the series could've been more solid with consistent quality throughout.

kyoko for the ask game!

KYOKO MY GIRLLLLLL as much as i literally never talk about kyoko she is LITERALLY one of my top ten characters of all time. like i LOVE her. so i am happy to talk about her!!!

favorite thing about them - it's hard to put this into words but i really like the way that kyoko expresses her kindness, and i find it refreshing. i think oftentimes we are quick to associate kindness with people who express it in a super non-subtle and direct way, but kyoko is someone who i think is an extremely kind person despite the fact that she sometimes comes off as standoffish or cold, and i really love this about her!!

least favorite thing about them - hmmm, i can't think of anything! just like with komaru, i think any flaws that kyoko has add to her character, so i wouldn't say i dislike them at all. i will say i don't like umm. some of her actions in thh chapter 2 but i think that is an issue of the writers not knowing how to handle that situation above all tbh

OTP - naegiri!!!!!! i love naegiri, it's the most well-written dynamic out of the ships that the games tries to make semi-canon in my opinion. they complete each other in such an important way, and compared to the protagonist x deuteragonist ships in the other two main games, i think naegiri does the best job of developing their dynamic in a convincing way that shows that they have chemistry and a deep connection. they didn't just throw us 50093893 suffocatingly forced romantic scenes and expect us to think it's #RelationshipGoals (side-eyeing saimatsu rn. sorry.)

nOTP - i don't hate any kyoko ships but i will say i'm not a huge fan of celesgiri - sorry!! i think it's pretty aesthetically, but seeing as kyoko is someone who has a really hard time trusting others, it's hard for me to see someone like celeste, who is extremely inauthentic as a person, being a good match for her. i could maybe see this ship if celeste goes through a lot of development, but i just think she clicks a lot more with makoto if you get what i mean!!

random headcanon - kyoko is the most bisexual girl to have ever bisexualed, her and makoto are the ultimate bi4bi couple ever

unpopular opinion - i wouldn't call this opinion unpopular bc i don't think a majority of people feel this way, but it bothers me when people act like kyoko's actions in trial 5 were selfish or unreasonable. the trial was rigged and unfair - someone who did not commit the crime was going to be executed no matter what, and i think it's unfair to say that she should have been willing to put her life on the line to save makoto. it was neither selfish or selfless - it was just a human way to react, and it doesn't mean she didn't care about makoto. also, contrasting this with the sacrifice she makes in dr3 shows the development her relationship with makoto goes through, and that's something i love about her!!

Bored so I'm stating my thoughts on every DRS swimsuit sprite

(Part 1: THH)

Makoto: it's like. Fine lol. Kind of generic but totally fits with his "totally average high school student" thing

Taka: Accurate. Next.

Byakuya: Torn between "this looks stupid" and "it's Byakuya we're talking about here, of course he'd wear something stupid and think it would make him look more refined ". Like this looks bad but it's absolutely in character

Mondo: Eh. Feels almost kinda young for him but I don't really have any better ideas and it does fit his color scheme well

Leon: Flaming hot cheetos vibes but I'll take it

Hifumi: Fitting but makes me even more mad that he's stylized Like That. All the other characters had plausible proportions I'm SURE you can do that for a fat character too. Either they all should be cartoony or none of em should be

Hiro: I guess I get what they were going for but this is too patterned and also not his color scheme at all. Maybe I'm just saying this bc I think orange and green basically never match but yeah

Chihiro: BEAUTIFUL AMAZING SHOWSTOPPING PERFECT. My favorite outfit so far. Dr may have utterly failed in basically every aspect of Chihiro's writing but they did not fail with this outfit she looks amazing

Sayaka: This looks dumb sorry. Idk what they were going for but like. Why. The top and bottom of her suit don't even match? (Admittedly her hair being draped over her shoulders weirdly like that is just for this sprite not all of them but still)

Kyoko. Like. Technically it's better than Sayaka's aesthetically in that at least it matches with itself and her hair ties (in most of the sprites at least. For some reason they're discolored in this only fullbody one.). Still. The thing about me is that I have trouble imagining Kyoko wearing literally any feminine clothing ever so I see this and my mind just goes "OOC" even though she literally also dresses fem in canon

Hina: Worst one yet. She's literally ultimate swimmer why would she wear this it's impractical and dumb. Also the color scheme is soo different from the normal desaturated red+white+blue she normally wears. The bandaid is an ok touch but that's the only good thing about this design

(I'm sorry Toko's expression is like that; this is the only close-to-fullbody DRS sprite on the wiki)

Toko and Syo (kind of the same outfit so I'll judge it together): I really like this one! Toko having a skirt thing so no one can see her tallymarks but Syo taking it off is a good touch. I wouldn't have thought of blue as her color but it actually really works (and reminds me of Komaru's uniform...)

Sakura: Cute! Tbh a bit more frilly/cutesy than I would have expected but she looks nice :)

Celeste: SECOND FAVE AFTER CHIHIRO I <3 IT. Generally Celeste's aesthetic fucks so hard (only tiiiiny criticism I have is that the lace on her suit would look nicer if it was matching in size with that on her headdress)

Junko: Why so plain??? Like it really doesn't seem to fit with the gyaru aesthetic at all (admittedly I don't know much about said fashion subculture though so I def could be wrong it just looks very different to my eye). Like I feel like this is what Hina should have worn it looks like smth actual swimmers would wear in a race

Mukuro: REAL LIXED FEELINGS HERE. On the one hand, this is very fitting for someone pretending to be the ultimate fashionista; you've perfectly captured that vibe. On the other hand, why should she have to pretend to be Junko in this context whyyy. (So like generally this aesthetic is good she's getting a good grade in Junko mimicry but the "Mukuro is butch" part of my brain is NOT a fan she shouldn't HAVE to wear that)

Monokuma: Sure lol. this is fine. Why do you need a swimsuit when you're normally naked
